Creston Library Board interviewed its third and final architectural firm Monday evening and plan to vote on hiring one at its next regular meeting April 6. A firm will be hired to tell the board the strengths and weaknesses of the Gibson Memorial Library site on Howard Street in Creston and which direction to expand the library to create more space for services.
The firms interviewed include Invision Architecture, OPN Architects and FEH Associates — all of Des Moines. John Karrmann and Dennis Sharp of FEH Associates interviewed for 90 minutes Monday and used some of that time brainstorming and exploring differ
ent scenarios for expansion and possibilities for remodeling the current library. FEH Associates received good reviews from the board afterward. “If we were voting tonight, I’d go with FEH,” said Connie Maxson, library board member. “I particularly liked their experience
and liked their presentation.” FEH Associates have helped build or are in the process of building 60 libraries in the Midwest. The board agreed that cost estimates from the three firms will be a main factor in their hiring decision, but consensus Monday was the board was leaning toward FEH Associates or OPN Architects. “They are the ones with library experience,” said Ann Coulter, chairwoman of the library board. GREENFIELD — It’s a head-banging place at Hairbandz in Greenfield. Mindy Eblen, 42, of Fontanelle, opened the doors to her salon March 10. The salon, located on the west side of the Greenfield square at 304 Public Square, is reminiscent of 80s rock bands like Bon Jovi, Warrant and Def Leppard. E b l e n , Eblen owner and operator of the salon, said she designed the salon when she was in hair school in Georgia. “I did design this in hair school,” Eblen said. “Then the opportunity just came up, so I just decided to go

my own way and get my own shop.” Eblen worked at The Final Cut in Greenfield for four-and-a-half years before deciding to open her own salon. The space became available two weeks before Eblen opened, allowing her a short amount of time to paint, decorate and install equipment. With the help of her coworkers and family, Eblen finished the setup during the
week she opened. “I’m an 80s hair band kind of girl,” Eblen said. “That was my vision, I guess, for what I wanted it to look like. I wanted it to be fun and cool.” Eblen and her coworkers Kathy Christensen, stylist and massage therapist, and Dillon Porter, tattoo artist, offer a variety of services, including hair cuts, colors, perms, nails, waxing, spray tans, massages and tattoos.
“I’m very excited, of course,” Eblen said. “It’s been a very hectic schedule.” During setup of Hairbandz, Eblen said she would go to work, then go immediately to the salon. “I’d be here till nine or ten o’clock every night since I started this, just trying to get this all ready,” Eblen said. “We’ve been pretty busy, Please see SALON, Page 2

to pay Marilyn Ralls — who resigned as library director at Gibson Memorial Library earlier this month — a two-week salary as part of an exit plan and to “thank her for the years she’s been” at Gibson Memorial Library. Ralls’ final day is March 31. The board also discussed advertising to fill Ralls position and discussed talking with current staff about their interest in filling in as an acting director. It is also below January’s national average rate of 5.7 percent, which was down from 5.6 percent in December. Officials say some traffic cameras must come down DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa transportation officials issued a report Tuesday ordering the removal of some traffic cameras operated by cities on state-supervised roadways. The Iowa Department of Transportation released evaluations on speed and red-light cameras that six cities operate on state-controlled highways and interstates. DOT officials want to remove cameras at ten locations — out of 34 locations total throughout the state. Cameras at one of those targeted locations had already been deactivated due to construction. This was the first oversight action since the DOT implemented rules last year dictating where and why Please see CAMERAS, Page 2
