Meals from the Heartland scheduled, goal increased By BAILEY POOLMAN
CNA staff reporter bpoolman@crestonnews.com
Volunteers who put together meals during Meals from the Heartland event at Southwestern Community College in 2014 beat the goal of 60,000. This year, Beth Kulow, SWCC dean of students, said the goal has been increased to 70,000. “It’s a mobile hunger fight, and it Kulow provides opportunities to groups and different organizations to fight hunger in Iowa and all over the world,” Kulow said. “We’re actually needing more volunteers than in the past.” Pay It Forward week is scheduled for April 2024 this year, and Meals from the Heartland will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SWCC gym April 23 for its third year being hosted by the college. Last year, volunteers packaged 60,264 meals, some of which went to MATURA in Creston for local families in need.

Meals from the Heartland will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SWCC gym April 23 for its third year being hosted by the college.
Groups, businesses and organizations can sign up as a team for the event. “They need to be in a team of eight to 10, and they’re going to package for an hour,” Kulow said. “During that time, the team will average about 2,000 meals.” Teams will be accepted until all time slots are full, at which time addi-
tional volunteers will be brought in for other jobs. Currently, there is space open during all time slots. Teams are asked to raise money to pay for the packaging and shipping of the meals. The cost to package and ship 2,000 meals is approximately $400. To sign up a team or for more information, contact Kulow at 641-782-1413.
Tentative schedule for Pay It Forward week: Week-long food drive, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Boxes will be located all over campus Monday through Friday. Food will be donated to local food pantry. Please see MEALS, Page 2
Christie building campaign while sticking close to home NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s team is pushing back against the impression that he’s struggling in his expected presidential bid. Lest there be any doubt his presidential prospects are alive, Christie’s supporters announced new
hires and donors Thursday, as well as the launch of a super PAC that can raise unlimited money for his presidential ambitions. But the Republican governor nonetheless appears to be taking a different tack than his likely rivals when it comes to how he’s spending his time. Facing
a lagging economy in the state and record-low approval ratings, he’s staying close to home as other potential candidates attend highly publicized events with party officials and activists in early voting states. That’s raising questions, if not frustration,
for some people open to supporting him. “What people keep asking me is when is he coming back? What’s the next step?” said Leighton Lord, a South Carolina attorney who went Please see CHRISTIE, Page 2
Arraignment scheduled for April in Huntsman case An arraignment for Lyndsay Jo Huntsman, 44, of Creston is scheduled for April 3. An arraignment is a formal reading of charges to the defendant. Huntsman is then expected to submit a plea of guilty or not guilty. Huntsman was charged with ongoing criminal conduct and five counts of first-degree theft after she turned herself in to Union County law enforcement Jan. 26. These charges against
Huntsman stem from a fourm o n t h investigation by Creston Police Department Huntsman and Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, which showed Huntsman misappropriated more than $500,000 from business accounts for Creston Automotive, 410 W. Adams St.
House OKs bill requiring ultrasound before an abortion DES MOINES (AP) — A bill that would require a woman in Iowa to have an ultrasound and be offered an image and description of it before she has an abortion advanced in the House on Thursday after several hours of debate, though it’s unlikely the legislation will advance in the Senate. The House voted 57-39 along mostly party lines in support of the bill, which would require a physician to perform an ultrasound or
face fines. It’s doubtful the Democratic-controlled Senate will advance the legislation, but the issue generated a lengthy debate in the Republican-led House, which included several procedural breaks. There was strong opposition from Democrats, who introduced dozens of proposed changes to the legislation. Please see ABORTION, Page 2
