Fareway celebrates remodel with ‘Grand Re-Opening’ By IAN RICHARDSON CNA staff reporter

As Mark Benbow, Fareway store manager, and Jim Anthony, meat department manager, cut the ribbon at yesterday morning’s “Grand Re-Opening” ceremony, a group of Fareway representatives and community members rejoiced for the official completion of the store’s remodel. The remodel, which took about six months from start to finish, revamped much of the store’s look and layout, most notably through the installation of new stand-up freezers and refrigerators and an expansion of aisle areas. The new coolers can hold significantly more than the previous ones, which allows Fareway to offer its customers

more products. Fareway has also introduced a much larger selection of gluten-free and organic foods throughout Benbow the store. “Everything refrigerated we’ve expanded extensively,” Benbow said. “The customer need has changed over the years, and those old freezers we had just were not supplying the need that the customers had.” The current Creston Fareway structure was built in 1989, 30 years after Fareway opened in Creston in 1959. Several other aging Fareway stores have also recently undergone remodels, said Reynolds Cra-

mer, Fareway CEO, who was in attendance yesterday. Cramer said it is because the items customers are looking for have changed in the past 25 years. “We have stores out there that we want to make sure are up-to-date with customer needs,” Cramer said. “A lot of new items today are refrigerated in nature. We needed to come in and Cramer triple the size of the frozen foods section so people would have the items they were looking for.” After some preparation work, a construction team came in early October and began the major structural remodels. The team finished

a week before Christmas, and further remodels on the store’s ceiling, floors and walls followed. The new floor received its final wax last week. With the structural changes came a rearranging of where some items are located. Benbow said the hardest hurdle for customers was, understandably, adapting to the new locations of many items. “When we started moving some things around in the aisles, the customers were wondering what we were doing,” Benbow said. But as the improvements became more visible, the people quickly warmed up to it, he said. “When we started getting the produce coolers in—we Please see FAREWAY, Page 2

GOP Straw Poll headed to Boone for 2015 DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa’s Republican straw poll, which has long been held in the college town of Ames, is moving. State GOP officials announced this morning the event would be held in Boone at the Central Iowa Expo on Aug. 8. They said earlier this year they would take bids to host the political gathering, in an effort to better manage costs. Four locations submitted bids and the committee that governs the party voted unanimously to go to Boone, located about 45 minutes outside Des Moines. First held in 1979, the Iowa straw poll has grown from a county GOP fundraiser to a large event. It is considered an early test of campaign organization. The party voted to continue the poll this year, after critics called for it to be eliminated.
