CNA managing editor kwilson@crestonnews.com

An estimated 200 people took the opportunity to see Iowa Supreme Court justices in action Monday evening at Creston High School. The seven justices heard oral arguments for Sanon v. City of Pella, a case that involves the drowning of two teenage boys while on a youth camp outing to the Pella Aquatic Center operated by the city of Pella. The live

event held last night was part of the court system’s public outreach program. Creston is the 16th community the justices have visited since 2011. The justices were made aware of the three Creston men who drowned in an ice fishing accident north of Creston over the weekend. A moment of silence was held prior to the arguments. “We do not live in a vacuum,” said Skip Kenyon, Creston city CNA photo by KYLE WILSON

The Creston High School gym erupted in applause Monday morning as history teacher Todd Jacobson accepted the Iowa 2014-2015 VFW High School Teacher of the Year Award. Jacobson, who served overseas during the Gulf War, was nominated by Lesa Downing, high school instructional coach and 2009-2010 Iowa VFW High School Teacher of the Year winner. Gary O’Daniels, VFW Troop 1797 commander, and Denny Abel, VFW Troop 1797 quartermaster, presented Jacobson with the award Monday. Creston High School also received a plaque and a check for $100. Each year the Iowa VFW selects three teachers for the award: one from high school, one from middle school and one from elementary school. Downing, who first met Jacobson when he was a teacher at Shenandoah and shared his experiences during the Gulf War in a video for her students,

said Jacobson has a way of bringing history to life that makes his students appreciate their freedom. “Teaching is a great profession. You have a lot of impact on a lot of students,” she said. “I think Todd has that, and I think that needs to be recognized when you have a teacher that’s pas-

sionate about kids.” Jacobson received a trophy and a $500 check. He said he plans to put the money toward a sitting area at the Creston Freedom Rock in honor of his late father-in-law, Wilbur Chubick, who served in the Navy during the early 1950s.

afternoon indicates a closed session to discussion potential litigation. The board is expected to publicly vote to sue Calhoun, Buena Vista and Sac counties. In January it sent a notice of intent to sue, which is part of a procedure outlined in the federal Clean Water Act. The counties oversee 10 drainage districts north of Des Moines that help move water from fields. The lawsuit will claim the drainage districts are the same as city wastewater treatment plants and should be regulated.

Branstad expressed concerns about the debt load assumed by many students and said students must learn “not borrow money for things they don’t need.” Iowa school districts are expected to teach certain financial lessons to K-12 students.
