The property has been purchased, the renovations have begun, and this spring the Creston LifeCare Clinic will open its doors at 1109 S. Sumner Ave. The clinic is run by LifeCare Pregnancy Resources, Inc., a nonprofit organization completely funded by donations from local people, churches and businesses. The organization opened its first clinic in Stuart three years ago, where it provides free and confidential pregnancy resources to those who need them. Ruth Fennessey, LifeCare’s cofounder and executive director, said the clinic’s main goal is to be a Fennessey caring resource and a safe place for those struggling with problems and decisions regarding pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. “Our care and support for them is unconditional,” Fennessey said. “Our clients know that whatever decision they make, later they are always welcome to come back.” The Stuart clinic, which is open from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and by appointment on Saturdays, has seen nearly 350 appointments in the past three years. Fennessey said she anticipates Creston’s clinic will

see a larger volume of appointments because it will serve a larger community. One of the clinic’s features is the Earn While You Learn program, in which those who come to the clinic can earn useful materials, such as diapers, wipes, bottles and toys, by participating in monthly lessons on subjects they want to be more informed about. “Providing material assistance has been a huge thing for a lot of families,” Briana Wolfe, Stuart clinic manager, said. “A lot of families have been able to have diapers for the first year that they’ve earned, as opposed to having to go out and buy them.” Fennessey said the initial idea for LifeCare Center came about five years ago, when Stuart residents observed a need in the community. “We had quite a few

LifeCare Clinic services

LifeCare Clinic offers a variety of services, all confidential and at no cost. These services are: •pregnancy tests •STI/STD testing and treatment •limited obstetrical ultrasounds •a variety of support groups for moms, dads, parents and people who

have experienced miscarriages or had an abortion •pregnancy options information •sexual health education •community referrals •material assistance (free diapers, maternity clothes, blankets, bottles, etc.) through the clinic’s “Earn While You Learn” program.

pregnant girls in our high school, so it started out as a way to be a help to people who were facing an unplanned pregnancy,” Fennessey said. Even in those early stages, the idea of establishing a clinic in Creston was in the directors’ sights. “Even before we opened in Stuart, we were considering if we should open in Creston,” Fennessey said. “So it’s always been some-

what in our five-year plan.” However, progress exceeded expectation when the building beside WalMart on Sumner Avenue, which was formerly occupied by Planned Parenthood, went up for sale. As of right now, the clinic’s opening date is contingent on how quickly renovation and staff training is completed. Fennessey said it will likely be within 30-60 days.

Governor’s priorities in place as Legislature hits procedural deadline DES MOINES (AP) — With the bipartisan approval of a fuel tax increase out of the way, Gov. Terry Branstad said Thursday that he was still hoping to win approval for two Branstad o t h e r legislative priorities — an anti-bullying bill and an effort to expand broadband Internet access. Both bills were set to advance as the Legislature approached a procedural

deadline, while some other, more partisan legislation appeared dead. “We don’t expect the Legislature is going to approve verbatim our recommendations, but we are pleased that our top priorities are in a (good) position,” Branstad said. Under legislative rules, known as “funnel week,” Friday is the deadline for most bills to receive committee-level approval in the state House or Senate. Lawmakers were set to complete their work Please see PRIORITIES, Page 2

Spring in action: Hanna Best, Creston High School freshman, performs her flute part

of “Acclamations,” a piece chosen for the high school band’s spring concert by director Mike Peters for its meaning during the concert at the high school Thursday. The spring concert included music from the Creston High School Drumline’s performance “Energy and Vibration,” as well as patriotic pieces, such as one from the miniseries “Band of Brothers,” in honor of the 70th anniversary of VE Day May 8. VE Day means victory in Europe, when Nazi Germany’s formal surrender was accepted, marking the end of World War II.
