The Southern Prairie YMCA is working to help people stay motivated for their New Year’s fitness resolutions with Jumpstart Jam 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It is a free event for anyone who wants to check out the gym and pool classes scheduled at the YMCA. Interested participants who are not currently members can sign up Saturday with no signing fee. “Last year the gym was packed,” said Dana Dodge, Southern Prairie YMCA fitness coordinator. “A lot of people did segway into different classes, so this event fits perfectly.” This is the third year for the event. It started in 2012 to help celebrate the YMCA’s reopening after it was damaged by a tornado. Jumpstart Jam includes 1020 minute previews of almost all the classes in Dodge’s fitness programs in the gym and in the pool. “We are hoping that Jumpstart Jam builds excitement for the fitness classes,” said Raquel Linch, Southern Prairie YMCA welcome center supervisor. “It is a great opportunity to try out the classes, especially if they are unsure about a certain class.” Linch added that it is a great opportunity to try something new or expand an individual’s fitness knowledge by trying a short preview of a new class. “We are hoping for a packed house (again this year),” Linch said. Several new classes are highlighted for participants to preview. They include Aqua

The Union County Board of Supervisors met Friday at the Union County Courthouse to elect a new chairman for the 2015 calendar year and get organized for the new year by approving a wide variety of resolutions, appointments and agreements. Lois Monday was elected the new chairman, replacing Dennis Brown. Ron Riley was named vice chairman. “It has been a good experience for me,” Brown said. “We did want to rotate that Monday position, let everybody have a different look on how things work.” The board had previously agreed to rotate the chairman positions between the three supervisors each year. This is the first time Monday has served as chairman. Brown “We decided we would all take our turn in the chair,” Monday said. “We all get along well ... we are hoping for a good year. Every time we get together we learn something new. There is always something you can take away from a situation.” The meeting started with a review by Union County Attorney Tim Kenyon and Auditor Sandy Hysell over the open meeting law and open records law. “It is a review of what we can and can’t do,” Hysell said. “It is just a nice refresher course.” Riley said it is a precaution they practice each year to make sure the board stays in line with Iowa Code Chapter 21 and 22.
