The first baby of the new year has already been released from Greater Regional Medical Center and is home safe with his parents. Michael Harris Anderson was the first Creston baby of 2015 — born at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Greater Regional. Michael weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces and was 20 1/4 inches long with a full head of brown hair. Parents Greg and Stephanie Anderson — both nurse anesthetists at GRMC — said it took them until late Saturday afternoon before deciding on a name. “We went with Michael because it’s traditional and Harris because that was my grandfather’s middle name,” Stephanie said Monday afternoon. Michael’s grandparents are Paul and Linda An-

Bitter cold expected in southwest Iowa on Wednesday A wind chill warning has been issued by National Weather Service (NWS) from midnight to noon Wednesday for much of Iowa, including Union County. Creston residents should expect an overnight low of around -8 degrees with wind chills anywhere from -20 to -40 degrees below zero. The worst wind chill conditions will occur between 6 to 10 a.m. during the morning commute Wednesday. The high temperature for Creston Wednesday is -5 degrees. They warn frostbite can lead to hypothermia, or even death, if precautions are not taken.

Democrats say that economic bills among priorities DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa’s Democratic lawmakers plan to focus on ways to help Iowa businesses and workers in 2015, though the state’s top Senate Democrat said Monday that increasing Iowa’s minimum wage will be a challenge in the divided Legislature. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, of Council Bluffs, said that two priorities for Democrats will be strengthening the preference given to Iowa companies in the awarding of state contracts and ensuring that employers are not stealing wages from Iowa workers. “Those are two areas that I think make sense, that would strengthen the middle class and grow Iowa’s economy,” Gronstal said.
