ORDINANCES

Codes That Affect you The codes and ordinances passed by the elected officials of the City of Crystal Lake are designed to protect and promote the public health, safety and general welfare of the citizens of the Crystal Lake community.

at a height not to exceed 8 inches at all times. In addition, trees and bushes should be trimmed to maintain adequate roadway and sidewalk clearance.

VEHICLE STICKERS

SNOW REMOVAL

Residents of Crystal Lake are required to purchase vehicle stickers within 30 days after establishing residency for each car owned. Renewal stickers go on sale June 1 of each year and must be displayed by July 15. The sticker is valid until June 30 of the following year. All funds from the sale of the stickers are used to pay for the City’s annual Street Resurfacing and Reconstruction Program.

BUILDING PERMITS

Building permits are required for various types of construction, from new structures to additions, regardless if the work is completed by the homeowner. Before beginning any home improvement project, check with the Building Division to see if a permit is required. Permit fees vary according to the type of project.

GARAGE SALES

Residents are required to obtain a permit from the Police Department in order to hold a garage sale. Each resident is limited to three garage sales per year and a maximum of four days per sale. There is no fee for the garage sale permit.

NOISE ORDINANCE

The City Code prohibits unreasonable, loud or raucous noise, or any noise that unreasonably disturbs the peace and comfort of neighbors.

Removal of snow from driveways onto public rights-of-way is prohibited. Residents are encouraged to shovel the sidewalk within their property.

OPEN BURNING

The City Code prohibits the open burning of trash, landscape waste, leaves, or other materials. Permit applications for bonfires, campfires and recreational fires in steel or ceramic portable fireplaces are available at the Fire Rescue Department or online.

CURFEW

It is unlawful for any person under the age of 17 to be present at any public assembly, building, place or street unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during the following hours: 12:01 a.m. – 6:00 a.m.– Friday through Sunday; 11:00 p.m – 6:00 a.m. – Sunday through Thursday.

BLOCK PARTIES

Residents wanting to close off a minor residential street to hold a block party must obtain permission from the City two weeks before the event. Block party applications are available at City Hall or online. Signatures from at least half of the affected residents are also needed for the street closure.

PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

Residents are reminded that lawns and weeds must be maintained

SKATEBOARDING AND ROLLER SKATING

Skateboarding, roller skating, and rollerblading are prohibited in the downtown area and on major streets throughout the City. For more information, please contact the Police Department at 815.356.3620.

BICYCLE REGISTRATION

Residents are encouraged to register their bicycles at the Police Department. A decal, which will help police identify the bike if it is lost or stolen, will be given to residents free of charge upon registering.

VOTING

To register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, age of 18 and a resident of McHenry County for 30 days. You may register at City Hall, 100 W. Woodstock Street, in addition to other locations throughout McHenry County.
