Lawmaker: Pensions, budget to top veto session agenda BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 570

DIXON – State Rep. Tom Demmer says that when he heads back to Springfield next week, the “big-ticket items” during the remainder of the Legislature’s veto session are sure to be the state budget and pensions. Those topics also were the dominant themes during a town hall Demmer hosted Tuesday night at Dixon City Hall. Demmer gave a legislative update for a group of about 20 people gathered in Council Chambers. The 90th District Republican opened with a recap of highlights from the spring legislative session, calling the

passage of a concealed-carry bill a big accomplishment. Illinois had been the only state that didn’t allow it, and the judicial system turned up the heat on lawmakers. “The federal court gave us 6 months to come up with a bill,” Demmer said. “The diversity of views made it difficult – I think we had 30-some votes on provisions – but we came up with a great compromise.” Those “big-ticket” items also fell into the category of unfinished business from the spring session. Several in attendance shared their concerns about pension uncertainties. CAPITOL CONTINUED ON A2

Citizens ask questions during Tuesday’s town hall meeting with state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, in Council Chambers at Dixon City Hall. The state budget and pensions dominated the discussion Tuesday.

DIXON – Mayor Jim Burke said he’s “not ready to make a decision about” whether he’ll run for re-election in 2015. “I just am not ready to say. ... I’m interested in that and I think I just kind of want to see how everything Dixon Mayor shakes out with the Jim Burke Rita [Crundwell] thing,” he said Tuesday. Burke is in his fourth term as Dixon mayor and said any announcement on Li whether he’ll seek Arellano re-election would likely come a year from now. There are other Dixon residents who also will be considering running for mayor Bob or City Council Gibler between now and then. Among them are Dixon businessman Li Arellano, who said he will think about a mayoral bid, but not until April, after some of his businesses have settled down. “I’m going to look at it for sure, if my business ventures are panning out the way I think they’re going to,” he said. “... If I’m in a position where I can and will be useful, I will take a good look at it.” Arellano owns the Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches location in Dixon, as well as the building its in. He’s also opening a Jimmy John’s location in Rock Falls, which could be open in early 2014. Arellano lost a Republican Party primary last year to Tom Demmer, a Dixon Republican who went on to win the 90th District state representative race. BURKE CONTINUED ON A2
