SPRING VALLEY — Hall High School is a recipient of the State Farm 2014 Celebrate My Drive Promotion. State Farm representatives presented the check for $25,000 to Superintendent Mike Struna at the school assembly Monday morning. “Being a resident of the state and being a community partner, I want to be certain that we get as many high schools as possible the money. I’m

happy that Hall got one of the grants,” said State Farm Field Community Relations Specialist Lisa Cooper. Struna rallied students, congratulating them on their successful year. He recognized various students and their accomplishments before he added the grant to the list of achievements. Hall High School was one of 90 schools total, and one of 45 small schools to receive the $25,000 grant. “It’s a small community, and a lot of people are very supportive of Hall High School,” Struna said. ‘Keep the Wreath Red’

Be aware of fire safety during the holiday season By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — When out and about this holiday season, many may notice various fire departments around the state sporting wreaths decorated in red lights. These are not holiday decorations, but a symbol of a fire safety campaign held annually during the Christmas season. The Princeton Fire Department is one of many which have taken part in this year’s campaign, reminding residents to practice fire safety during the holiday season. Fire departments around the state hang their wreaths on Dec. 1. “We like to go the whole Christmas season with the wreath lit in red lights. When we change a light to white that indicates we

Here are some tips to ‘Keep the Wreath Red’ this year: • Unplug holiday lights before leaving home or sleeping. • Do not overload extension cords. • Be careful with candles and open flames. • Use flame retardant decorations. • Ensure lights are in good condition and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed. • Keep natural trees watered; do not rely on chemical sprays to make trees flame resistant.

Wrapping it up Christmas for Kids Toy Drive almost complete By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — The 2014 Christmas for Kids Toy Drive collection is wrapping up, as the distribution day will be this Saturday, Dec. 13. The toy drive is expected to serve 250 Bureau County families, which is around 550 children. Pastor Doug Kirkpatrick of the Princeton Wesleyan Church is optimistic about the amount of financial donations and toys received this year for the toy drive. Throughout the week, volunteers will be working to sort toys into age groups and will be taking shopping trips with the financial donations received to help fill the gaps among the various age ranges the toy drive serves.

The Logan Junior High School in Princeton was just one of many schools around the county that helped raise funds and toys for the 2014 Christmas for Kids Toy Drive. This year the students competed between grades fifth through eighth to see who could bring in the most monies. Together the grades were able to raise $1,458.62, aside from the bundle of toys they collected. Anyone looking to make a last donation this week to the toy drive is asked to drop off a financial contribution to the Christmas

for Kids bank account at any Heartland Bank and Trust branch. “We will still take toys, but financial contribu-

tions will help more as they will be used to fill in the age gaps the drive is
