What do we do with Bureau Valley?

Board narrows options By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com

MANLIUS — The top six options Bureau Valley School Board chose to consider after reviewing a

facilities study by the Farnsworth Group of Peoria were presented to the public in a special meeting on Monday, March 9. About 100 people attended the meeting. Everyone in attendance received a copy of a breakdown summary for each option being considered. The summary provides

a 20-year total cost for each option; a description of facility changes that would need to take place; construction cost assumptions; building maintenance and energy costs; personnel costs; transportation costs; extra curricular costs; and more. Superintendent Steve Endress briefly reviewed

the summary with the public before going over a financial picture and future construction financing for each option available. The entire facilities study summary for each option, as well as information on how the school would finance any option, can be viewed on a slide show or a tutorial on Bureau Valley’s

website at bv340.org. The board will host another special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, March 23, to review the information to public members who missed Monday’s meeting. The board and administration is also planning to setup times for public tours of the district’s school buildings.

These times and dates will be set at a later date.

Common concerns from the public Following Endress’ presentation, members of the audience were given the

Drugs, depression, suicide ... and more Parents need to talk with their kids on a daily basis By Lyle Ganther lganther@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — Parents should be helping their children by being involved with their lives in order to fight a problem of teen suicides and drug overdoses in Bureau County. That sentiment was echoed as eight people discussed this problem and related issues at a town hall meeting Tuesday, March 10, at the Bureau County Metro Center. “We are kinda sad we are here to talk about this, but we are all happy we are here to talk about

this,” said Terry Madsen, a member of CPASA’s executive board who served as the evening’s moderator. Princeton Police Chief Tom Root added there is a rise in cannabis use, but a heroin use hike increase is most prevalent in Princeton. “There is a large impact on young people. It used to be heroin users were 30-40 years old. Now we are seeing 17, 18, 19 year olds becoming involved with heroin. It is a drug that obviously is very addictive,” said Root. “It leads to a lot of crime

word, every sentence; we really think we have the right job description for a county administrator,” said Sondgeroth. Sondgeroth proposed the decision on whether or not to hire a recruiter for the new position also be placed on the agenda for next month’s meeting. He explained the ad hoc committee should meet one last time to finalize their recommendation for a recruiter and to review the job description one last time. However, he said, the purpose of the ad hoc committee has been fulfilled.

Aaaahhhh ... finally Aptly named, Snow Drops, are usually the first spring flower to appear — sometimes even boldly sticking their pretty white heads through the snow. With warmer temperatures welcomed into the Bureau County area recently, these Snow Drops were found in bloom in Sheffield — a gentle gift from Mother Nature, reminding us spring is on its way.
