However, many people prioritize creating passwords that are easy to remember (or that don’t change) over their home’s security. The best passwords are a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Longer, “pass phrases” or sentences also work well. As a rule of thumb, change your passwords every time you add a new device to the network, or at least every few months.

UPDATE APPS AND FIRMWARE Most people generally remember to update their smartphone apps but updating the apps and firmware in smart devices around the house can be a different story. Just like mobile apps, smart devices are constantly being updated and often come out with updates to increase performance, remove bugs, or improve safety.

Using an old version of a device’s firmware makes it easier for hackers to attack because the firmware is vulnerable and not running at its full potential.

The growth of smart home technology means that not every product is created equally. Before bringing something into your home that could put your privacy and safety at risk, be sure to do your research. Putting smart home devices on a public wireless internet network makes them much easier to hack and makes them more visible to hackers.

Instead, opt for a private home network that has a strong password and network protection. To be even safer, security experts recommend putting your smart home devices on a separate wireless network from your home computer, which greatly reduces the risk of hacking across devices.

TURN OFF UNUSED DEVICES It can be tempting to always leave every device plugged in and turned on, but that just gives hackers more opportunities to find a way in.

Powering down your router or smart home devices that don’t need to be on all the time, can keep your network more secure.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BE INCLUDING IN YOUR LISTING PRICE? So, you’ve decided to list your home on the market. You’ve probably enlisted the help of realtor, or at least researched what other comparable homes in your area are going for. You probably have a good idea of what your home is worth, but are you considering all the factors to include in your listing? Consider the following items, and make sure you’re accounting for them in your listing price.

Window Treatments

Furniture

When you move into your new dwelling, you’re not going to be taking your window treatments with you. But while you’re in your current home, it’s worth setting aside a few hundred dollars to replace the blinds, shutters and curtains. For a truly modern, convenient touch, install motorized shades that can be opened and closed with the touch of a button.

When you’re selling your home, you can include these updated window treatments, and their installation, in your price.

Some buyers are looking for a truly turnkey home that’s completely furnished, especially in fast-moving cities like LA or New York. The furniture they see staged at your open house will help them achieve that, and they’ll likely be willing to pay extra for it. By selling your furniture and decor with your house, you may be able to increase the price of your listing.

Light Fixtures Light fixtures are usually customized for a space, so it’s better to leave them in your house.

To sell them with your home, go with modern fixtures that keep the space well lit. Avoid harsh fluorescent lights and choose LED bulbs instead, which can make a room look brighter while saving energy.

Playsets Many potential buyers have kids or plan on having kids, especially if they’re first-time homebuyers. Even if your own kids have outgrown swing sets and play areas, consider keeping them in the yard. They have the potential to increase the price of your home.

Appliances Appliances can be tough to move, especially if they’re built into your kitchen or laundry room.

Instead of planning to take them with you, include them in the price of your home. A word of caution: ensure the appliances match, are (relatively) new, are cleaned and look immaculate.

If you’re in a pricey neighborhood, buyers want move-in ready homes stocked with higher-end appliances.

Spring for expensive brands, and you may be able to get more money for your home when you sell.

How to Practice POOL CHEMICAL SAFETY With the summer months right around the corner, it’s about time to prepare your pool for the season. Whether you’re opening your pool for the summer, or eventually closing it down for the winter, it’s always important to pay close attention to the chemicals you are using, as they impact everyone and everything that comes into contact with your pool. Here are some best practices for pool chemical safety.

Read the directions. Closely reading the directions, so that you know how to properly use, store and add chemicals to the pool, is paramount. Make sure to follow the instructions closely to avoid any potential accidents. Remember, each chemical needed to keep your pool swimmer-ready are specifically designed for a different purpose. Don’t assume that all chemicals are administered the same – each one comes with its own set of instructions, so it’s important to ensure that you understand each of them individually and combines.

Protect yourself. Like in chemistry class, you’ll want to make sure you protect yourself from the effects of the chemicals. Always wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, or an air mask when adding chemicals to your pool. These items will be able to protect you from those pesky chemical burns. Also, keep in mind that pool chemicals should be opened in the open air, not an enclosed space. Doing so will help you avoid inhaling harmful chemicals.

Bring the chemicals to the water. If a chemical requires that you add it to water, be sure to fill a container with water and then add the chemical after. The mixture may splash out of the container if water is added to a chemical and that may seriously harm you. There is nothing fun about having a pool that you are unable to swim in due to injury.

Store your chemicals properly. Chemical storage is key to keeping yourself safe in between uses. Like most chemicals, keep them away from flammable materials and tightly close the lids when they are not in use. Pool chemicals should also not be stored on top of each other, the mixing of chemicals is dangerous and could have disastrous results. Keep the chemicals in a safe place where pets and children can’t get in them, like locked up in a shed.

WEEDS THIS SUMMER

Spring is here, which means that flowers and blossoms are in full bloom, and trees, plants and grass will be vibrant once again. But along with that wonderful spring renewal comes the return of unwanted growth in the form of weeds.

However, if you prepare to stay on top of weeds now, you’ll have a much easier time fighting them this spring and summer.

To start preparing your property against weeds, inspect these following areas to make sure they won’t be hospitable to them. Consult your local landscaping professionals as well, to come up with a detailed plan to prevent weeds.

1. PATHWAYS. Paths made from loose materials, such as bark mulch, decomposed granite or stones, can act as seeding beds, offering a natural spot for weeds to grow.

Have weed preventer sprayed on these materials.

2. UNDERNEATH SHRUBS. Areas under shrubs can be hard to reach, shady and moist - a perfect place for weeds.

3. UNPAVED DRIVEWAYS AND PARKING AREAS. Whether grassy, muddy or filled with gravel, these areas often roll out the welcome mat for weeds.

4. CRACKS AND CREVICES. Cracks between paving stones, bricks or slabs of concrete provide natural entry points for weeds. If the weeds are not dealt with, roots can lift pavers or bricks, creating dangerous uneven spots while potentially ruining the clean look of your patio or walkway. Have a landscaping professional help attack these situations right away.

5. BENEATH DECKS. Despite sparse sunlight, weeds may still grow under decks.

6. AROUND DOWNSPOUTS. Weeds often thrive at the base of down spouts where moisture is abundant. Heavy rains can wash seeds from these weeds into other areas of your yard.

7. ALONG FENCES AND FOUNDATIONS. Often out-of-sight and out-of-mind, these areas are natural spots for weed build-up.

8. FRESHLY TILLED SOIL. Anytime you turn soil or an animal digs a hole, you expose buried weed seeds, creating an area to watch for new seedlings.

9. OPEN SOIL. Keep a close watch on your yard for dead spots or open areas. Fill them in as soon as you can, adding new plants, seeds or mulch. Bare spots in your property should be over seeded with desirable grass seed. In new plantings, cultivate often to uproot new weed seedlings.
