UPDATE YOUR GARAGE TO

BOOST CURB APPEAL

Want to make your home stand out from the others in your neighborhood? Updating your garage can be a simple way to accomplish this while boosting curb appeal at the same time. TRY A NEW COLOR One option to make your home’s garage door draw attention is to use a unique color. You have to be careful here, because a color that’s too odd could actually be a drawback. Consider the overall look of your home and choose a color that’ll complement your home’s architecture while still being different from the other homes in the neighborhood. CHOOSE A UNIQUE MATERIAL Are all the doors in your neighborhood metal or vinyl? Consider upgrading to a real wood door. Wood doors give a home character and a classic look, and they can be an asset to your home’s curb appeal. If you don’t want to spend more for a real wood door, consider a metal or vinyl door that is finished to look like wood. ADD A UNIQUE DESIGN Most garage doors look very similar. Four rows of paneling, often decorated with squares and maybe a row of windows at the top, is fairly standard. Mix this up a bit, and your home will stand out. Use a flush style or long panel door. If you have the budget and

the time, consider redoing the door and the frame to add some curves. Arched garage doors instantly grab attention and attract interest in the home. If your home doesn’t give you room for arches, get creative with the four-panel look. Use molding or glass to add a unique design to this standard shape. Vertical paneling and arched windows can also make the door stand out, without changing its overall shape. Paint the panels to match your siding and the trim to match the house’s trim for a distinctive, yet classic look. UPGRADE THE FINISHING TOUCHES From the handle to the glass in the windows, the finishing touches on your garage door can be the final piece of the puzzle as you try to make it stand out. Wrought-iron decorative touches on the panels can add the distinction you need. Even changing the lighting near your garage door can make a difference. Upgrade these small touches and give your garage door some extra pizzazz. Updating your garage door can be a valuable way to make your home look distinctive and increase its curb appeal. If you’re thinking about selling your home in the near future, consider making this change now to improve your selling experience.

WAYS TO UPDATE A BASIC BATHROOM

Sure, the ever-functional bathroom is sometimes swept aside in favor of decorating more grandiose rooms. But your bathroom doesn’t have to be boring! It’s the little details that count, so we’ve rounded up seven easy DIY updates for every part of the room, from the walls down to the bottom of your vanity. They’re also inexpensive and quick -- you can complete some of these projects in a day. Dust off your tools this weekend and make your bathroom look its best.

1

Pick out new paint. A new color scheme instantly changes the mood of a room. It’s important to use color carefully in a bathroom, since a color choice can easily overwhelm what is often one of the smallest rooms in a house. Pale blues, greens and grays are popular picks for their calming, spa-like qualities.

2

Deck the walls with art. Just because a bathroom is functional doesn’t mean it can’t have personality. Hang some art prints on your bathroom walls to personalize the space. For a vintage look, decorate with repurposed flea market finds. Wallpaper an accent wall in a fun water-resistant design, or use colorful tiles as decor. For any artwork you hang up in bathrooms, make sure it has some kind of covering to protect from moisture.

3

Max out your mirror. Say goodbye to plain, store-bought plastic mirror panels. Or rather, dress them up. Paint a mirror frame to match your cabinets for a cohesive look, or swap out a blah square mirror

altogether for one with a unique shape. For a funky, casual vibe, you could even hang up an assortment of smaller mirrors like the room above.

4

Switch out hardware. An easy way to change your bathroom’s look is to switch out the faucet and cabinet pulls. You can go from rustic to sleek (and vice versa) in a matter of minutes. Hardware installation kits make it easy. If you’re feeling more ambitious, experienced DIYers can also change out the sink to match.

5

Dress up your doors. Take boring cabinet fronts up a notch by covering the doors with selfadhesive paper. You can cover the entire surface or cut out a pattern, like circles or a chevron print, that allows the base color to peek through. The options for pretty paper are endless, so you can find one that fits your design style.

6

Kick up your (furniture) feet. It’s the little details that make any room look polished and put-together. Make your bathroom vanity stand out by adding furniture feet or a toe kick to the corners.

7

Get creative with cardboard or other materials. Cut up large cardboard tubes or PVC pipes and mount them on the wall in a cluster for a stylish storage display. Use them to store toilet paper, rolled-up towels, lotions and more for a fun DIY project that won’t break the bank.

GIVE YOUR MUDROOM A WINTER MAKEOVER

I

t’s one of the hardest-working rooms in the house. The mudroom gets a lot of traffic but not a lot of respect. Why not give this workhorse space some TLC this winter and see how much more useful it becomes? ADD STORAGE Creating storage off the floor is a key way to keep the mudroom from becoming awash in shoes and boots. Since you need seating anyway, look for a bench with drawers or a cabinet on bun feet. Add a chaise chair cushion for comfort. If you have small children, don’t overlook their height. Place hooks for coats and backpacks at their height and they’ll be more inclined to use them. Plus, you’ll get double the storage for coats, scarves and purses. For even more storage, create a simple bench out of a flat piece of lumber and leave space underneath for shoes. Add a small piece of molding across the front at the

bottom to frame it out and keep shoes corralled neatly so they don’t spill out into the room. BIN THERE, DONE THAT Small items tossed willy-nilly can quickly clutter up a mudroom. Add a bin where you can toss magazines and letters when you come in the door. Mount a second bin on the wall to hold caps, earmuffs, gloves and mittens. Another option is to install some shelving above coat hooks, then add bins atop the shelves. Still another choice is to add bins on the vertical. A stacking row of shelves can easily hold baskets or bins so you can get grab scarves, gloves and hats quickly and keep the items you use most often within easy reach. MAKE IT PRETTY Just because it’s strictly utilitarian doesn’t mean your mudroom has to be ugly. Add some bead board wainscoting to the walls,

an attractive pendant light and a colorful rug to catch dirt and slush before it gets tracked into the house. A big bold poster can liven up the space, and make sure there’s plenty of lighting so you can find what you need easily. Despite your best efforts, if the mud room remains chaotic and unsightly, consider adding a sliding door on the outside of the wall to hide the mess. MAKE IT USEFUL A mudroom with a place for everything and everything in its place will help keep the whole family more organized. That’s why it’s important to think about the little things that will make your mud room really work. Make sure that in addition to places for coats and scarves, you also include spots to stash keys, sunglasses, umbrellas, baseball caps and other small gear. These simple touches can mean the difference between getting out the door fast and facing the day unprepared.

TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR YARD THIS

Winter

Creative Living 81 Digestsize.indd 1

A

s many extend the amount of time they’re spending at home, they’re extending the use of their outdoor living space as well, despite a drop in temperatures. Getting outside, and breathing in fresh air, even when it’s chilly, is good for our mental and physical well-being. That’s why features like fire pits, outdoor heaters and enhanced lighting are on the rise as homeowners look to add warmth and ambience in winter. In addition to crafting a cold-weather friendly outdoor space, it’s important to tend to your yard this winter as well. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute offers these tips to keep your yard in top shape for winter use: Stop trimming your lawn once it freezes. Cutting your grass too short can leave it dry and exposes it to the elements, as well as insects and disease. Trim your grass to the height recommended for your lawn variety before it freezes. Add a thin layer of mulch to your lawn. A thin layer of mulch can protect your grass roots from snow and frost. It can even prevent deeper layers of soil from freezing, making it easier for your lawn to bounce back in the spring. Check your trees for dead or damaged limbs. Removing dead or damaged limbs before inclement weather arrives, is one way to protect your shrubs and yard from damage (not to mention people and pets!). Snow and ice can weigh heavily on dead branches and make them snap and fall. Remove any dead branches carefully with clippers, a chainsaw or pole pruner, following safety precautions. Consult an arborist for problematic trees. Mark pathways to clear and beds to avoid. Mark the areas that you will need to clear of snow and ice, as well as areas you want to avoid, like flower beds, with stakes or sticks. This way, when it’s time to run your snow thrower, you won’t accidentally cut a path through the lawn. Always follow manufacturer’s safety procedures and never put your hand inside the snow thrower. Always use a clean out tool or stick to clear a clog. Keep new (and old) plantings well-hydrated. Many people enhance their yard with trees and shrubs during the pandemic. Caring for them in the winter is important, as plants and trees that are well-hydrated are more likely to survive a hard freeze. Newly planted trees can only survive about two weeks in the winter without water, so be sure to water any new trees you’ve added to your landscape if they aren’t getting water naturally from rain or snow. If your outside hose is already shut off for the winter, then use a bucket and add five gallons to the area around the tree. Continue watering plants and trees. Older plants and trees should enter winter well-hydrated, so continue watering even after the leaves have dropped. Even in the wintertime, hardy evergreen plants continue to lose moisture through their needles and if it’s a dry winter they need supplemental water too. TIPS FOR GETTING

A HOME LOAN

Need a loan to buy a house? There are many options out there to help you obtain a mortgage, and finding the best loan and lender for your particular situation can be confusing and difficult. To help you navigate the process, check out the following tips:

Creative Living 81 Digestsize.indd 3

Have your documents ready. Although each lender may require different documentation, you may be required to furnish the following information depending on your employment and financial situation: • Pay stubs • Tax returns • Financial statements (one that is less than 60 days old); • Copies of additional monthly payments such as car loans, credit cards and student loans • Any other information (such as proof of additional income) that you think will help a lender evaluate your credit request positively. • Review the basics. Knowing the fundamentals of the home loan process is an excellent way to prepare to choose the right mortgage. Make sure you are familiar with interest rates, loan terms and additional fees associated with buying a home.

Know your own financial situation. Before you begin the home loan application process, determine what you can realistically afford. Take into consideration your credit score, how much debt you currently carry and what type of down payment you’re prepared to make. Compare quotes. Beyond the interest rates, there are closing fees and points and commissions. You’ll want to compare these for all the lenders on your list. There are several calculators available online that may help you determine which loan provides the best value, including ones offered by ABA.

Choose a trusted lender. Get references from family and friends, and do your research. Check with your local Better Business Bureau, and find out if it has received any complaints about any of the lenders you’re considering. Read between the lines. Slick TV ads, telemarketers or door-todoor salespeople will often offer fast, easy loans for houses, cars and home repair, but not disclose all of the details. Read the fine print. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Ask questions. When in doubt, ask for clarification from your lender. Discuss how long the loan process will take, how you will communicate–by phone or email– and who will service your loan.

SECURITY TIPS FOR YOUR NEW HOME

Buying and moving into a new home is exciting, but it also requires a lot of attention to detail, from closing the deal to figuring out the logistics of getting all your belongings from point A to point B. Amid all the excitement, planning and unpacking, many new homeowners overlook one essential factor: the security of their new house.

Creative Living 81 Digestsize.indd 6

If you’re moving, consider these six tips from the home security experts at ADT to help keep your family and your property safe and secure:

1

Change the Locks. You never know who lived in your property before you moved in. Do yourself a favor and change the locks regardless of the situation.

2

Transfer or Invest in a Security System. There’s no better way to ensure your home is secure 24/7 than installing a home security system. Burglarproof your house by adding video surveillance and motion sensors for complete security. If there’s already a security system in the house, have it properly looked over and reactivated. If you’d like to bring the security system that you’re currently using to your new house, consider relocation services.

3

Install Indoor and Outdoor Lighting. Don’t stand out as the “new neighbor” by being the only dim house on the street at night. Keep your family protected by making your house look occupied at all times using light automation.

4

Keep Your Outside Area in Excellent Condition. Did you know burglars see the exterior of your property as a bullseye? If your lawn is unkempt or you have large shrubbery, burglars will see that as an invitation to break in.

5

Talk With the Neighbors. Having trusted neighbors can immediately make living in a new place much safer. They may be able to help keep your house look occupied while you’re away by simply picking up the newspaper, shoveling your walkway, etc.

6

Remind Your Kids to Be Cautious. Moving to a new neighborhood means a lot of unfamiliar faces for you and your family. Make sure your children are aware that they should never let a stranger into the house, leave the garage door up when they come in or go exploring too far until you’re more familiar with the area.

By taking care of these security measures when moving, you can turn your focus to truly enjoying your new, safe home. Reprinted with permission from RISMedia. ©2023. All rights reserved.

HOW TO FIND QUALITY MOVERS Hiring a moving company is one of the most important decisions people make when buying or selling a home. Nightmare stories abound about movers that show up hours late, break or lose items, or whose estimates aren’t accurate.

Thankfully, there are things you can do that will increase your chances of a reliable moving company while avoiding the bad ones. Here are some key ways to be sure you the right moving company for you. Read the reviews. One of the great things about the internet age is that you can reviews for just about any business. Go to sites like Yelp that review businesses and see what people have to say. Don’t let one bad review turn you and consider what reviewers are complaining about because some people are unreasonable. Get referrals. Referrals are from reviews because they come from people you know. Perhaps there’s someone who recently moved to your neighborhood, ask them if they recommend their movers. Or maybe a coworker of yours recently moved. You can also reach out to friends on Facebook. Your local chamber of commerce or the Better Business Bureau are also excellent references. Get options. Talk to more than one moving company, even if the one seems perfect.

Creative Living 81 Digestsize.indd 5

And consider factors beyond pricing—cheapest isn’t always the best. And when discussing cost, ask what factors might change an estimate. Make a checklist. There are warning signs to look for when choosing a mover. First, be sure the company you hire is properly licensed and insured. Don’t take estimates over the phone or via email, there’s no way a mover can give an accurate price without actually looking at your belongings. Poorly maintained websites and an unwillingness to work out a Protect your valuables. Even if you’re that you’ve found the perfect mover, there are certain things you should move yourself. These include important such as birth passports and Social Security cards, along with information. You also want to move jewelry and other small, expensive items yourself. Moving is stressful, so be sure to the right moving company to make the process as smooth as possible.

HOW TO SAVE UP FOR A DOWN PAYMENT Saving up for a down payment is one of the biggest challenges for aspiring first-time homebuyers. A typical down payment can range from 5 to 20 percent of a home’s purchase price–that’s no small chunk of change. Although it might seem overwhelming to rack up thousands of dollars, practicing some discipline and using the right tactics can help you pull it off, making it possible for you to go from renter to proud homeowner.

To help you save for a down payment, consider these tips from the American Bankers Association: Develop a Budget and Timeline. Start by determining how much you’ll need for a down payment. Create a budget and calculate how much you can realistically save each month–that’ll help you gauge when you’ll be ready to transition from renter to homeowner. Establish a Separate Savings Account. Set up a separate savings account exclusively for your down payment, and make your monthly contributions automatic. By keeping this money separate, you’ll be less likely to tap into it when you’re tight on cash. Shop Around to Reduce Major Monthly Expenses. It’s a good idea to check rates for your car insurance, renters insurance, health insurance, cable, internet and cellphone plan. There may be deals or promotions available that allow you to save hundreds of dollars by adjusting your contracts.

Monitor Your Spending. With online banking, keeping an eye on your spending is easier than ever. Track where most of your discretionary income is going. Identify areas where you could cut back (nice meals out, vacations, etc.) and instead put that money into savings. Look Into State and Local Home-Buying Programs. Many states, counties and local governments operate programs for first-time homebuyers. Some programs offer housing discounts, while others provide down payment loans or grants. Celebrate Savings Milestones. Saving enough for a down payment can be daunting. To avoid getting discouraged, break it up into smaller goals and reward yourself when you reach each one. If you need to save $30,000 total, consider treating yourself to a nice meal every $5,000 saved. This’ll help you stay motivated throughout the process.
