WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM. Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) According to Le Corbusier, Pictorial Space describes irremediably space view from a distance which is resigned to frontality forever, it cannot be entered or circulated through, while it can only be viewed from a frontal perspective at a distance. In a nutshell, pictorial space only can be shown in 2D space without depth and it is not a real space.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings is attributed to two properties: pure extension and “marriage de contour”- contoured shape with one of the facets into depth, and the continuedly of edges. In order to enhance the sense of 2D, the use of contrasting colors is minimized in his painting. Furthermore, threedimensional structures are pitted against by these two properties. Le Corbusier did not permit himself the luxury of using black in order to avoid a sense of three-dimensional space to invade his painting.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) As the ending points of objects are hidden from view, perspectival space can create a sense of infinity. Moreover, perspectival view limits the space to a single viewpoint thus a sense of frontality tended to be created. By contrast, the difference between perspective and axonometric is the absence of a vanishing point. Projection creates an invisible world by eliminating the notion of vanishing points. It allows elongate at a proportional rate without being distorted by perspective and all lines are parallel. As long as objects represented in their full capacity, projection could render visible and clear endpoints.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) In order to chart the 3D trajectories of artillery projectiles, axonometric projection has its origin in ancient visual practices that occurs in a military context. Rather than representing existing reality with existing conventions, axonometric was an ideal tool to depict the avant-grade’s vision of a new world. It was measurable, accurate and could convey abstract information. Some abstract artists, for example, Lissitzsky, aimed to a parallel art with scientific methods. For these artists, axonometric was used to achieve the visual abstraction of these techniques and the indeterminacy of the represented spatial filed which is essential for their works.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

This is final version of my Mario world. It is a landscape with rivers, trees, shrubs and flat ?

grassland in the morning time. Below the

platform, the orographic base gives the sense of the city of the sky. In order to make the picture more coherent, a flag is added in the blue cube which below the individual cloud. In order to show a game theme, the coins are inserted to the version. The yellow cube with question mark is also relative to the game. River and waterfall made the picture vivid. I place 4 different types of plant in my drawing, two of them with depth and two of them without depth.

Digital stage: Using Adobe Photoshop to clean scan copy of final hand drawing.

Digital stage: Using Adobe Illustrator to do the linework (0.25pt line for all sections; 0.5pt line for cut sections).

10

Digital stage: Using Adobe Illustrator to color Mario world. Gradient difference shows the change of light in perspective.
