As a landscape architecture student, I am interested in a harmonious relationship between the building systems and the natural landscape. Building pavilions to frame green trees and blue sky provides a comfortable living system to the general public. In order to provide different spatial experience, I aim to create a space for a retreat by playing with the form of the structures to control the different levels of privacy. This is also the main concept which drives me from M1 to M3. The Aqua cloud pavilion is a relatively completed project which reflects the concept.

As the design is a subject of a combination of both input and output, the most attractive aspect of the design is it provides a chance for me to applied imaginary concepts into reality. During the practice, I could solve problems by keeping testing different methods. Because of these learning experiences, I developed the ability to shape people’s lives through design. Throughout the learning of Digital Design, I have known the importance of spatial analysis such as circulation, threshold and shadow situations. Have a clear concept and drive it through the whole design is essential for architecture design. After attending the workshops, I have mastered the basics of parametric design by using grasshopper and learnt real-time rendering on the Unreal Engine. In order to produce physical models, I have been familiar with laser cutting and 3D printing process.

Throughout the reflection, I definitely have room to improve myself. As physicals models provide a direct approach to experience the design project, I will spend more time on model making and photography of the models. Moreover, precedent accumulation is helpful for me to further development, so I will do more readings in my leisure times and spend more time understanding the successful precedents.

Mos architects built the original model by using grasshopper in rhino. Online study of the construction indicates that above the exterior reinforced concrete walls is a series of tall, hut-like chimneys with a rough thatch exterior and reflective aluminium fibre interior. The purpose of pavilion construction is for cooling down the courtyard through the stack effect. The precedent study may serve as an example or rule to authorize or justify subsequent analogous action. So, the precedent study is useful and helpful to recognize circulation and threshold of the space. Based on circulation paths and pause areas, space, where more people tend to pass by, is built with a big arched opening. Structure of a large area could contain more people that may be the primary circulation space or possible pause space.

This diagram has compared the shade from noon (open time) to 18:00 PM (close time) in August in New York. The space under the shadow maybe more popular for people to pause and stay during the summer time.

Above diagram indicates the threshold of the pavilion. In the pavilion, programme such as afterparty would take place. Two situations of the activity scale is examined. Small activities could have intersections while larger scale of events may have less link with other activity areas due to identified threshold - walls.

According to site plan, the spaces with seats tend to be pause area. Tourists are more possible to stay and have a rest in these areas. By connecting three exits, the circulation paths are shown on the bottom as well.

Task A: Surface and waffle Martrix and Possibilities of Surface

I have explored four different surfaces as can be seen in the matrix. 1. The first row of diagrams shows the surfaces control the thresholds. As can be seen in 4.1, the surfaces create the largest interior space. 2. The second row shows the condition of shadows at 10:00 AM in Melbourne. Figure 4.2 indicates that a comfortable shadow is provided between the surfaces. 3. As can be seen in the third row, a number of panels are explored to create the paneling surfaces. A mixture of both 2D and 3D panels are used to play with the surfaces. 4. Finally, the last row shows circulations around the pavilions. Figure 4.4 shows a big central gathering space which under the shadow. One entrance and the curved surface control the movement of people. Consequently, a more private space is provided in the space that promote people to pause and occupy in this area.

Grasshopper script for Waffle The visual script above is consisted with 3 parts: surfaces, waffle structures and panels. The script of two surfaces starts with constructing a 150*150*150mm bounding box, then extract the edges of the box by using DeBrep command. Using List items to select four curves and separate the cure into five sections with girded points. Loft the curve and use Surface Domain Number to separate the surface into 5*5 grids on both surfaces. Offset Grid command is applied to make a variation of the height and directions of the panels. Panels are created in grasshopper. A mixture of both 2D and 3D panels are applied to the surface.

Both 2D and 3D panels are applied to form the surface. The top of the left surface has 2D panels with some openings thus the light can go through while the bottom of the surface contains some 3D panels without openings so that could increase privacy of the interior space. The right surface has a lot of 3D panels around central 2D panels. The 2D panels are going to form windows thus light can come into the pavilion. The areas with more shades tend to be potential pause areas and the space without shades would be the circulation areas.

This is a single-entrance pavilion which the internal threshold controls the circulation by the form. The interior space has a large opening above so the light is allowed to come through. The movements of the visitors are controlled by fins. The central space tends to be the potential pause area with a large population density.

Task B: Solid and void

1. The first row shows my first attempt of Boolean by using spheres in workshop. However, due to the geometry of sphere, the quality of the space is not rich and I decided to try more by using different shapes to get a space of richer spatial experience.

Martrix and Possibilities of Boolean Subjects I have explored four different Boolean objects as can be seen in the matrix.

2. In the second row, the big Boolean object has more space on the ground level. However, when I selected the small model, I found that it could not avoid sharp angled edges which is boring in spatial experience. 3. As can be seen in the third row, more positive spaces are created inside the cube. However, the spatial experience of each level is similar which is not meet my design scheme. 4. Finally, the last row is the my final choose for 3D print. As the space has more virations than the previous iterations. The small model for 3D printing has different size of the openings which frame the landscape in different way. The form of the structure controls the circulation and threshold of the space. 15

The visual script shows the process of the creation of final boolean object. A 50*50*50 box is created at first. Then divided it into 3*3 grids by using DeBrep > List items > Surface Domain Number. A curve attractor is used to adjust grids. After mesh the object, non - pt attrctor are created to as the centers of geometries.

The Boolean differences result shows a 3-level structure with bigger positive space at the bottom and smaller at the top. A lot of rectangular openings are created to allow the light come through. As can be seen in the section, the structure has three levels are similar in spatial organization.

3D Print of Task b Model Each level has one big gathering spaces and two smaller spaces of more privacy. The circulation center is in the big gathering area to the right and the space would be more privacy to the left.

This is my first attempt to send a request for 3D print job. Exporting the rhino model to stl. format file then use the setting for DD Module 2 model. In the picture below shows the MakerBot window of the print job. The green parts in the screenshot indicates the model and yellow is the support which need to remove after the job complete.

The openings frames nice shadows and people can pause and occupy the spaces under the shadow. The circulation is also similar as Task A because the pavilion also has one entrance to control the movement pf pedestrians.

I choose this model for further study because the central space is a gathering space that is similar to Task A and it also provides some comfortable shadows in the gathering space.

In terms of threshold, both small and big scale group activities can hold in the space. the small activity maybe during lunchtime and the possible location of the presenter is between the two seats. The big scale activity is the evening concert and performers may be stand in the center of the pavilion.

The landscape is raised to create a space for shading, cooling and retreating during the summer periods. Higher panels are applied on the half side of the surface in order to divide the inner space from the landscape.

Inspired from Mos Afterparty in M1 and applied in both M2&M3, the main concept of my projects is controlling the form of structures to create a space of different levels of privacy for retreat and the space can hold both small and big scale activities. Focusing on the pavilion, I apply similar strategy as Mos afterparty which is a combination of durable and stable steel structure and a thin surface to create a lithesome feeling. The surface of the pavilion consists numbers of translucence 3d polypropylene shading elements (polypropylene: a kind of plastic which of High temperature resistant, light weight, easy to produce; blue shade is provided to render the atmosphere). The landscape is raised to create a space for shading, cooling and retreating which is developed by the inspiration of the landscape of Sidney Myer Music bowl. Together with structure and the landscape, a hidden space is created for the visitors to use.

3D polypropylene shading elements are in blue to provide cool feelings. The height of the panels varied to the slope change of the structure. Panels are short where the surface is smooth and high on dramatic slope.

Steel is applied as the main material of structure because of its stability and ductility. The evocative grid shell provides a temporary civic place for performance, retreat and reflection.

Grasshopper Model Script N

Firstly, I set some points in rhino then connect them as a closed curve. Then, the curve is the input of to construct a Kangaroo mesh surface by using Kangaroo Physics. After that, the mesh is the input of both surface and structure construction. I use Trim Mesh With Plane to trim the very sharp led of the mesh. In order to build the structure, I attempt Weaverbird’s Constant Quads Split Subdivision. Besides, Weaverbirds Stellate/Cumulation is applied to build the paneling surface. Lastly, I use Weaverbird’s Mesh Thicken to add the thickness of the mesh surface. The structure of the model is also applid the method to construct a waffle which is similar to M2. 21

The sun diagram indicates the shade provided by the pavilion during the summer time. The landscape and the pavilion combine together to provide Circulations shading area through a whole day as people usually prefer a shading space to retreat in summer.

Based on the shading situation, I analyze the possibility or frequency regarding the use of pause areas. The dark purple area may be the most popular space to pause because shades always cover Threshold the area. and the circulation diagram shows the different possibilities and highlight the circulation centre.
