Why I Chose This...

Articles

I have always loved space and what it would take for humans to further our knowledge of the mysteries that it holds. There is so many crazy things that we know and are yet to learn about it. It is also a very broad topic, which is why I focused specifically on space exploration and our growing knowledge on what could be very close in our future.

Speakers Cady Coleman Retired Astronaut Cady Coleman is a scientist, wife, mother, pilot, musician, retired NASA Astronaut and a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and a six-month trip aboard the International Space Station. Coleman currently serves as University Explorer at Arizona State University and as a consultant for a wide range of space-related projects. Karin Oberg Space Chemist Öberg received her B.S. in chemistry from Caltech in 2005 and her PhD in astronomy from Leiden University in 2009. She completed her postdoctoral work at the HarvardSmithsonian Center for Astrophysics as a NASA Hubble Fellow and joined the Harvard Astronomy faculty in 2013, where she is a professor today. Peter Beck Rocket Entrepreneur Beck founded Rocket Lab, where he led the development of the Electron rocket. Throwing the rocket-building rulebook out the window, Beck and his team developed the world’s first fully carbon-composite launch vehicle, powering it with 3D-printed, electric turbopump-fed engines. He also oversaw the development of the world’s only private orbital launch site. Jessy Kate Schingler Space policy and governance researcher Jessy Kate Schingler leads policy and governance at the Open Lunar Foundation, which works on policy and institution design in support of sustainable lunar settlements driven by open values. She has a bachelors in astrophysics, a masters in computer science and two years towards a PhD in distributed computing.

Philip Lubin Physicist Philip Lubin is a professor of physics at UC Santa Barbara and director of the UCSB Experimental Cosmology Laboratory. His research primarily focuses on the early universe, studying the millimeter wavelengths bands and applications of directed energy for planetary defense and relativistic propulsion. Bjarke Ingels Architect Ingels enrolled into architecture school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and immediately developed an interest in architecture and later studied at the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona. He cofounded PLOT Architects with Julien De Smedt in 2001 as well as the BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005. Sarah Kessans Biochemist Dr Sarah Kessans is a US-born New Zealand scientist and biochemist, a multi-national champion in rowing and was in the top 50 applicants—out of over 18,000—in the NASA astronaut programme. She’s earned degrees in plant and molecular biologies, worked on a plant-based HIV vaccine, and is now working at the cutting edge of synthetic biology solutions to combat climate change, facilitate space colonisation, and advance innovations in medicine and agriculture. In short, she’s figuring out what we’ll eat on Mars. Lynn Rothschild Astrobiologist, Synthetic Biologist Lynn Rothschild wears several hats as a senior scientist NASA’s Ames Research Center and Bio and Bio-Inspired Technologies, Research and Technology Lead for NASA Headquarters Space Technology Mission Directorate, as well as Adjunct Professor at Brown University. Her research has focused on how life, particularly microbes, has evolved in the context of the physical environment, both here and potentially elsewhere.

The Living Tech We Need to Support Human Life on Other Planets

Raised What rules and regulations would have to come into play when it comes to creating these organizations that could transport people? Supplies are a big concern for if we put people to live on the moon. How could we manage creating, shipping and/or finding resources on the moon to support people living? Who could be eligible to travel into space and possibly live in these places? What kinds of technology do we need to further develop to create a working system that allows people to go to new places in space?

Answered Is there a concern of humans of hurting another planet’s climate like we are currently doing to Earth? What do we have to be aware of in space when it comes to how our bodies work? Is there a way to produce rockets that are accessible to everyone and can be easily produced to create a greater market, if a market for this kind of travel emerges?

Where Boise, ID What better place to hold a conference about the stars than a city that is surrounded by nothing. Allows easy travel to the conference as well as the ability to step outside the city and see the universe above you.

Who Why do people go to conferences? People are mainly going to conferences to learn new things, network, and share their one ideas with one another, whether it be in discussions or through presentations. What will they expect to get out of your conference? My conference allows people to expand their knowledge and learn what new technologies and discoveries we have to continue our exploration of the universe. Who will you conference attend? While anyone is welcome, it is targeted towards scientists and developers that want to further our presence in space.

How will people find out about your conference? Advertising within the spaces and communities that these people occupy is the best way to reach them and let them learn of the conference. This goes for both online and in person spaces.

Zero Gravity Elevating your knowledge Etheral, Airy, Light Zero Gravity is the near complete loss of force on the human body. While you may be loosing gravity, this conference allows any explorer, learner and creator to gain new knowledge on our future in space.

New Frontier Searching in a new field Retro, Clean, Bright There are many possibilities in the new frontier that is outer space. Through this conference, learn what we can do to survive the vastness of space and what new opportunities await us.

Into Space Going beyond what we know Technical, Altered, Dark This conference takes what you think you know about our future in space and morphs it into something new. Come and discover what it really means for us to go into space.

Bridging the Distance Learning our future in the now Clean, Monochromatic, Dark The distance between us and our future in space is smaller than we think. This conference takes everything you may think you know about space exploration and broaden it.

Chasing Stars Exploring the unknown Organic, Inconsistent, Delicate What awaits us in the stars? Chasing stars is one of the largest annual conferences in the U.S. and is held in Boise, Idaho for explorers, scientists, and creators from all around the world to exchange new ideas.

Audience Persona Christina Swan is a 35 year old chemist. She is originally from San Diego, CA but currently lives in Bozeman, MT with her boyfriend. Christina attended Harvard University and pursued a PhD degree in Chemical Physics. She lives in Montana, so many of her interests involve nature. This includes skiing, hiking, kayaking, and fly fishing. Christina and her boyfriend often walk to the story together and buy their necessities, as they live within reasonable distance that it is easier for them to walk. Gas prices also help push them to be more willing to walk around town. They also love stores like REI and Helly Hansen. Christina was originally unsure about her move to Montana, as she is from San Diego, but fell in love with it. After her move is when she met her now boyfriend.
