PROJECT OVERVIEW For this project, I chose the article I Spent My Life Consenting to Touch I Didn’t Want by Melissa Fobes. After choosing an article, I also created a cover for the article as well as two pieces of spot art, with one being animated. When it came to the cover, I wanted to find a way to portray the idea of touch, lust, and purity. I also wanted to show a comparison by using the main figure as a light color versus the gray crumpled figures that surrounded it. I also really wanted to use color to my advantage, which is also why I used a light color for the main figure, grave for the destroyed figures, and red for the hands. White represents purity, the grey represents the lack of purity as well as the destruction of it, and the red is for lust and for anger. I also use this same idea for the colors in my spot art. One thing that was a challenge was the spot art. For one, I struggled with fully getting my concept and article to work together. I had some ideas that worked, but some didn’t hit the spot. Finally, I ended up trying a new method when it came to animating my spot art. I tried using the puppet tool and it allowed me to create a more natural and organic look to the animation in comparison to if I had only used positioning and rotating. I do wish I could have found a way to expand on the animation and usage of the puppet tool in After Effects, however with my time I was unable to do so.

CONCEPTS

SPRING 2021

1. While being locked inside, Covid-19 isn’t the only thing being locked out. The constant, unwanted touching of women’s bodies and empty consent was left on the doorstep.

- Locked away - Behind closed doors

2. Everyday women are faced with the painful reality that is the embarrassment and inability to say no when you’re expected to say yes.

- Inside thoughts/feelings vs. outside reaction - Internalized feelings visualized?

3. The lack of consent in interactions is so loud even in the quietest moments. But relearning the signs your body gives you speaks the loudest.

- Maybe some play on sound imagery? - Listening to your body/gut

ILLUSTRATIVE COVERS While some of my covers were done in Illustrator, I felt that hand drawing them out in Photoshop would allow me to achieve my desired look a lot easier. These are an additional five cover ideas in addition to the shown 5 earlier.

FINAL COVER After narrowing it down to this idea, I went through the process of refinement. I had to redraw the hands, as they weren’t quite right. I also made adjustments to the size, color and shape of both the white and grey figures. Lastly, another refinement made was to my title and it’s placement. I had to remove a figure so it could fit nicely in there.
