Reflection and Summary The studies explore how to use a modular grid, how to establish a clear visual hierarchy through grids and alignment. Our compositions explored scale, coding, grouping and typographic color in many different ways of our choice.
As for how the project went, I really enjoyed this project. Having never have worked with typography before this class, being able to get the opportunity to play around with it and design with type was a fun, new learning experience for me. There were points throughout this project where I felt as if I had no idea where to take it, because of the lack of color or rules. However, I still am quite happy with most of my designs throughout this process and very happy with how my final 5 designs ended up.
Making and Breaking the Grid The benefits of working with a grid are simple, like clarity, efficiency, economy and continuity throughout your design. It introduces systematic order in a layout, allowing a viewer to navigate through the layout easier. Grids also allow designers to put large amounts of info on a page easily and more quickly. Grids are alignment based guides and all grids contain the same basic parts. Every part also fulfills a specific purpose in different designs.
Margins- Negative space between the format edge and the content. They surround and define the areas where the content is. Flowlines- Alignments that break the space into horizontals. Helps guide the eye across the format. Spatial Zones- Groups of modules that form distinct fields. Each field can be for a different role. Markers- A placement indicator for consistently appearing text. Modules- Individual units of space seperated by regular intervals. Columns- Vertical alignments of type. Manuscript Grid- Structurally the simplest kind of grid. It is a large rectangular area that takes up most of the page. Column Grid- Information that is all organized into vertical columns. Modular Grid- Essentially a column grid with a large number of horizontals that create many modules. It also helps with charts, forms, schedules and navigation.
Mike Abbink Mike Abbink is very well rounded in the field and has worked for multiple different firms and clients throughout his career. He started his career at Meta Design in San Francisco, CA and developed designs and in-store design for Nike. He co-founded Method and was the creative director there, overseeing corporate identity, interactive design and web design for companies like Adobe, Autodesk, MSN and many more. He also has worked for Apple as a design director where he designed packaging and improved their corporate identity. Adding to his long list of workplaces, he also has held a position at Wolff Olins as a design director and made brand development/identity for companies like Citibank, Knoll, Visa and many more. Mike has many different awards to his name with some being AIGA Graphic Design USA, ISTD 2001 and 100 Show from Method. He has taught at the San Francisco Academy of Art and the Art Center College of Design. Included in that is that he has lectured at Hyper Island School for New Media in Sweden.
Gemma Obrien Gemma Obrien has 10+ years of experience creating commercial work using her style of expressive, bold calligraphy and illustration. Has created designs for companies like Apple, Google, Adobe and the New York Times. She also has received multiple awards from the New York Type Directors Club, recognized by the ADC Young Gun, and named Print Magazine’s New Visual Artist: 15 under 30.
Riley Cran Riley Cran is a graphic designer, type designer and a lettering artist. He is a manager of the company Lost Type, which is a collaborative Digital Type Foundry that he co-founded in 2011. He wants his work to be characterful and functional in its design as well as merge historical influences with contemporary styles. Through this style he has worked with many different clients such as Dropbox, IBM, Starbucks, Amazon, Redbubble and more. His work has been recognized by Communication Arts, HOW Magazine, Logo Lounge, Gestalten Publishing, and the AIGA.
