THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE 5TH AVENUE THEATRE Through August 4 The Pirates of Penzance is one of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s greatest masterpieces. Since its premiere in 1879, this “comic opera” (or operetta) has become a classic of musical theater, supplying a handful of familiar songs including “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,” which has become a tongue-twisting classic. The 5th Avenue Theater brings this classic back to the public and does with many of its favorite local actors, and all the bells, whistles and humor that the original masters intended.

The storyline is full of comedy, twists, slapstick, and pure silliness, but it is a fun farce of a time no matter how it’s viewed. Young Frederic is a Pirate’s Apprentice, bound in servitude until his 21st birthday. On that officious day he

Remember when you were a kid and you dreamed of flying on the trapeze or walking the tightrope?

Well, the kids of today are no different when it comes to dreaming of working for a circus. And this summer, they might just get that chance! The American Youth Circus Organization (AYCO) has opened the door to make that dream a reality this summer.

Each year, the American Youth Circus Festival rotates locations – and next month, Seattle will play host.

Nearly 300 youth from around the world including the United States, Sweden, and England, are expected to participate in the festival. AYCO is partnering with the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA) in Seattle to support the growing circus

Make it a weekend, not just a day

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer It’s not much fun zipping up to Vancouver, B.C., just to watch the Pride parade on Sunday afternoon and then heading right back to Seattle. So plan an entire weekend around the festivities, happening August 2-4. The event, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, includes street parties, outdoor movie screenings, a Queer arts festival, a Gay bike tour, youth dances and, of course, the big parade on Sunday. If you can’t go for Pride, the Vancouver Queer Film Festival runs August 15 through 25 at multiple downtown venues.

The 2013 Vancouver Pride Parade steps off from Robson and Thurlow streets at noon on Sunday, August 4. From there it heads west on Denman Street and winds along Pacific Street to Beach Avenue, ending at the Sunset Beach Festival site overlooking English Bay. At the festival, you can enjoy free live entertainment and a mixed gathering of LGBT organizations, services, and food vendors, not to mention a colorful assortment of people from all over.

ACCOMMODATIONS Vancouver is a great place to reward yourself with a bit of indulgence. Two hotels I strongly recommend staying at for Pride weekend – or any weekend, for that matter – are the Opus and the Loden. The Opus Hotel (www.vancouver.opushotel.com), located in trendy Yaletown, is not only very Gay-friendly but also a close ally of the local LGBT community, donating proceeds of its Pride packages directly to the Vancouver Pride Society. The five-story boutique property recently renovated all of its rooms, brightening or darkening the walls and furnishings to match the lifestyles of their

mock profile guests, faux personalities that the hotel customizes their decor around.

Modern room amenities include flat-panel TVs, nightly turndown service with retro boxed candy (instead of traditional chocolates), L’Occitane bath soaps and lotions, and complimentary WiFi. Unique to the Opus are Samsung phones and iPads available for in-room use and outside the hotel as well, handy for directions or quick information when out and about. They include

RESTAURANTS AND BARS New restaurants and bars seem to pop in Vancouver weekly, and I visited a few during my last trip two months ago. But my first recommendation is one that’s been around for a while: Raincity Grill (www. raincitygrill.com). This West End restaurant has premier views of English Bay and an outstanding menu of dishes prepared with regionally sourced seafood, meats, and produce. Executive Chef Nicolas Hipperson, who moved to Vancouver with his partner from Saskatchewan, doesn’t resort to anything nouveau – it’s just familiar fare executed very well, such as Salt Spring Island Honey Mussels, Lois Lake Steelhead Trout, Fraser Canyon White Rabbit, or his Fish ’n’ Chips, available for takeout during the summer months (think post Pride parade).

The event, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, includes street parties, outdoor movie screenings, a Queer arts festival, a Gay bike tour, youth dances and, of course, the big parade on Sunday. a “Street Food Vancouver” app that shows guests where to find local food trucks. Upon check-in, you’ll also be greeted with a welcome beverage. The walk to Davie Village from the Opus takes less than five minutes, and in the opposite direction is Granville Island, which can be accessed by Aquabus (water taxi). To keep fit, rent mountain or cruiser bikes at the front desk, or utilize the hotel’s fitness center. The Opus staff, always polite and helpful, are some of the finest I’ve encountered anywhere, and the added bonus of courtesy vehicle service within the downtown area is convenient, but also note that the Yaletown SkyTrain station is directly across the street.

The Loden Hotel (www.theloden.com) is also centrally located, but closer to Vancouver’s waterfront. It’s a stylish hotel with contemporary furnishings and an awardwinning French-inspired restaurant, Tableau Bar Bistro. The 77-room property offers all guests 42-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod/ mp3 docking stations, in-suite yoga equipment (and dedicated yoga channel), marble bathrooms with separate showers and commodes, complimentary cruiser bike rentals, and Molton Brown bath products. Similar to the Opus, the Loden offers guests the hassle-free use of private car service in the form of vintage taxi cabs. The hotel will make its debut at this year’s Pride parade, and it routinely sponsors LGBT community events year-round. The Loden has a Pride package, as well, and the parade’s starting point is within a few minutes’ walking distance of its front entrance.

Edible Canada (www.ediblecanada. com), on Granville Island, is relatively new (just two years old) and serves meals with ingredients sourced exclusively in Canada, like Yarrow Meadows Duck Poutine, Okanagan Parfait, and Newfoundland Fish & Brewis. Afterwards, take time to explore the Granville Island Public Market, where you’ll find everything from freshly made doughnuts to handmade pies to fine chocolates and a locally operated tea shop.

Wildebeest (wildebeest.ca), winner of Vancouver Magazine’s Gold Award for “Best New Restaurant,” has tremendous buzz at the moment, mainly for its nose-to-tail approach to upscale dining, creating attractive dishes from unconventional parts of the animal or distinct preparation methods, such as Shaved Pig Face served with crispy ear, charred octopus, arugula, and sherry vinegar. One of its signature offerings, Roasted Bone Marrow, can later be enjoyed as a slimy treat called “Bone Luge,” in which sherry is poured down the bone marrow and then consumed like a shot of liquor. Other plates include Elk Tartare, Veal Neck, and Seaweed-Roasted Halibut. For something more budget-friendly and less exotic, I suggest oldies but goodies like the Elbow Room Cafe, Hamburger Mary’s, Fountainhead Pub, or any of the Cactus Club locations.

For drinking, the lineup of Gay bars remains the same with no new additions. The Pumpjack, Numbers, and Celebrities, which underwent a multimillion dollar interior makeover, are the places to be seen on

Pride weekend, although the lines to get in will be super-long. A pair of Gay friendly bars on opposite ends of town are worth checking out, at least before the late-night straight crowds arrive. The Clough Club (donnellygroup.ca), in the hopping Gastown district, named after the first lamplighter (John Clough) of this once-shady neighborhood, has the look and feel of a bar that’s been around for decades – brick walls, exposed beams, antique decor – yet it barely opened a year ago. With room for 40 people in the front area and 40 more in the back parlor (weekends and special events only), it can fill up quickly. Aiming to reinvent the tiki cocktail scene, Clough Club has an impressive list of original concoctions, including the Vellocet, a refreshing drink that blends green chartreuse, pineapple, and lime juices, falernum, Angostura bitters, Peychaud’s bitters, and burnt mint sprig.

Killjoy Barbers (donnellygroup.ca), in Yaletown, a daytime barbershop and lively club in the dark hours, is also reinventing tiki cocktails with a variety of thoughtfully conceived beverages, such as their signature Rosemary’s Baby (Victoria gin, Galliano, fresh lemon juice, green chartreuse-toasted rosemary). Killjoy, with a downstairs dance floor, gets really busy on the weekends, so plan ahead and grab a table in the sleek, dim-lit lounge sometime before 9 p.m. to avoid the rush.

ACTIVITIES Shopping and bar crawling are essential things to do in any city, but in Vancouver I also suggest an outdoor excursion to take in the breathtaking scenery. Cycle City Tours (cyclevancouver.com) offers group rides with various themes (art, food, central city, Stanley Park) by knowledgeable guides at affordable prices, anywhere from $25 to $100 (includes bike rental). If you prefer to set your own course, go to Spokes Bicycle Rentals (www.spokesbicyclerentals.com), where all Cycle City Tours begin. After a long or short (depending on your stamina) bike ride, you can recover with a soothing massage at Willow Stream Spa, inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim (www.fairmont. com/pacific-rim-vancouver). An array of reinvigorating treatments, like the 60-minute “Destination Rejuvenation,” help melt away soreness and accumulated stress. Stick around after your massage and dip into the Jacuzzi with views of the mountains, recline in the tranquil relaxation room, or get dressed and head down to the vibrant lobby bar on the main level. And for an all-out splurge, book yourself an exhilarating adventure on Helijet (www.helijet.com), with prices starting at $149 per person for 10- to 30-minute panoramic tours. There’s no better way to inhale the city landscape than from above, on board a helicopter, departing just minutes away from the Waterfront SkyTrain station.

It is easy to see why Herdlicka has earned this position so early in his career – he’s among the greats of Broadway’s musical theater.

The set is simple – a living room and an outdoor patio area – but the ability of designer Matthew Smucker to use ACT’s floor to deliver scene changes makes it so much more fun. Pete Rush’s costumes are also much funnier than necessary, especially the stars-and-stripes getup Neto puts on in the second act! And the sound design by Bren-

dan Patrick Hogan is the perfect accompaniment.

The sexes might have a real fight on their hands with different perceptions of this production. But like the title, first you might feel rapture in the atmospheric comedy, then blister with the swelling of thought, and then burn to talk about it afterward. the Pirate King. His stage bravado fits perfectly with the leader of these gentlemanly pirates, and his shtick and strong voice fit the role like a glove. The Pirate King is a role of comic timing that O’Neill carefully prevents from falling into cliché.

David Pichette, another 5th Avenue favorite, plays the ever-popular Major-General Stanley. His character shows up briefly but always provides a comic presentation with every appearance. He, of course, gets the classic song referred to above, one that precedes the character’s appearance and sets the tone for how the character is viewed from there onward. Pichette’s presentation of this patter song is most impressive, leaving the audience positively pleased.

Another audience-pleaser is the talented Anne Allgood, who portrays “pirate maid” Ruth, a woman torn between her duty as a pirate and her dedication to Frederic. Allgood is another example of mastering precise timing, great vocals, and stage presentation all at the same time. Comedy exudes from her with every intentional action or facial expression.

This show presents many scenes for duels, chases, struggles, and fights, and it is all too easy to do these things sloppily. Rocco’s vision works well, incorporating a few scenes of well-done shtick and even playfulness with the orchestra’s conductor, Joel Fram.

The fight scenes thankfully lack that staged look of swordplay, and are played out in “real time” making for a much more convincing-looking fight.

SOLID SUPPORT The supporting cast (which is quite a major presence) is all excellent and filled with recognizable talents from Seattle’s stage.

Billie Wildrick, Cayman Ilika, and Kirsten deLohr Helland are just some of the women adding their beautiful voices as the majorgeneral’s wards, while Matt Owen, Aaron Shanks, and Matt Wolfe are some of the gifted men playing pirates and/or police (in this version, Canadian Mounties). Any audience member would be hard-pressed to find any of this cast less than perfect, and for any cast – especially one this large and present – that is rare indeed.

James Rocco’s direction and choreography definitely need to be mentioned as well.

SO, WHAT’S AN OPERETTA? While Pirates was originally called a comic opera, it is more a comic operetta.

The difference is that opera has continual music playing to mostly sung lyrics, while an operetta – though heavy on music – has some spoken dialogue without music being played. An operetta has more continual music than a musical, which has a large amount of spoken dialogue with songs added to promote the storyline. (Examples: Oklahoma! is a musical; Sweeney Todd is an operetta; Madame Butterfly is an opera.) Either way, don’t let that cause any hesitation in seeing The Pirates of Penzance. The music is wonderful, the voices are highly enjoyable, and the easily followed libretto is nothing short of pure entertainment.

The Pirates of Penzance originally opened at New York’s Fifth Avenue Theater on December 31, 1879. Sometimes called The Slave of Duty, it marked the fifth collaboration of Gilbert & Sullivan. Although revived many times, it was the 1981 Broadway production by producer Joseph Papp that won a Tony Award for Best Revival, leading to the 1983 film version starring Kevin Kline, Rex Smith, and Linda Ronstadt – all recreating their stage roles from the previous year. The 1982 film The Pirate Movie (starring Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol) was a musical based (very loosely) on the original operetta.

mutant doctor known only as Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova), and a mysterious ninja, Harada (Will Yun Lee), who appears to be both friend and foe, sometimes at the exact same time. Wanting to be left alone, the former X-Men operative must reconcile the actions of his past with his potentially heroic future, embracing the soldier within to save the lives of those he cares about while also securing himself a path he’ll be content to walk along afterwards.

It’s all a bunch of nonsensical hooey – that goes without saying – but Bomback and Frank present it more in the vein of a ’70sstyle political thriller (think 3 Days of the Condor) mixed with a Kurosawa samurai flick (Yojimbo comes to mind) than they do anything else and that’s a very good thing indeed. They keep things intimate, personal, and close to the vest, everything revolving around Logan’s battles with his inner demons above all else. The movie isn’t interested in the big or the audacious, instead choosing to turn inward at almost every turn, in essence making it one of the more anachronistic Marvel superhero epics to grace the multiplex up to this point.

THE WOLVERINE Opens July 26 Saying The Wolverine is better than 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine is in most respects damning with faint praise. Let’s be frank, that movie was more or less terrible, and other than a couple of terrific moments (most notably the imaginative opening credits – how bad must your film be if that’s the most memorable aspect?), there’s not a lot to talk about as far as that comic book superhero flick is concerned.

Still, director James Mangold (Walk the Line; 3:10 to Yuma) and writers Mark Bomback (Unstoppable) and Scott Frank (The Lookout; Out of Sight) have done a grand job of making this particular mutant worthy of caring about again, presenting a streamlined, emotionally charged thriller that’s more about character than it is about spectacle. Character-driven Wolverine bares its claws

fan-favorite villain The Silver Samurai is slightly on the anticlimactic side, while the revelation about who is pulling the strings and why isn’t exactly a shock.

But overall the movie works, sometimes spectacularly, and I’m almost loathe to admit this but The Wolverine could be my favorite foray into this particular Marvel universe since 2003’s X2 (easily still the best film in the entire series), a statement that includes X-Men: First Class, an energetic prequel I very much enjoyed. Jackman rips into the character in ways he hasn’t in ages, ethereal surrealistic conversations between he and Janssen filled with devastating emotional subtext that continually slices the jugular. This is a Wolverine fans have been

waiting to see for quite some time, the Les Misérables Oscar nominee delivering in ways he hasn’t been allowed to previously.

There’s not a lot more to say. Mangold and his team take charge of the character and his story with confidence, showcasing a streamlined scenario of regret, betrayal, rebirth, and honor befitting him. They treat their audience with respect, never belittling their intelligence, and why things don’t go places entirely unexpected there are a few tricks up the sequel’s sleeve I can’t say I saw coming.

It’s a fun ride, nothing more, and certainly nothing less, The Wolverine a late-summer superhero sensation worthy of going a tiny bit berserk about.

Just do it Funny, feminine To Do List is a promiscuous pleasure

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE TO DO LIST Opens July 26 The To Do List doesn’t do anything unexpected. It doesn’t tell a story where the outcome is close to unknown. Where it is groundbreaking, however, and where it is different, is in the depiction of its protagonist, 18-year-old high school valedictorian Brandy Klark (Aubrey Plaza). What could have been just your normal everyday teenage coming-of-age sex comedy ends up becoming something more thanks in large part to the switch in gender, newbie writer/ director Maggie Carey delivering a smart, sexy, flippant, vulgar, honest and, yes, funny debut in the process.

The basics aren’t any more involved than those found in American Pie. It’s 1993, and organized, reserved, somewhat judgmental, highly opinionated, and freshly graduated Boise, Idaho, student Brandy has come to the conclusion she isn’t ready for college.

Not that she isn’t intellectually ready – she’s got the smarts department covered – but sexually. So driven to get the highest GPA in the history of her school district, she never took the time to discover a single one of her personal erogenous zones. Much to the amusement of her two best friends, Fiona (Alia Shawkat) and Wendy (Sarah Steele), as well as her far more promiscuous, aboutto-be-married older sister, Amber (Rachel Bilson), she creates a to-do list of sexual adventures to complete over the summer, the last of which involves losing her proverbial cherry to sexy community pool lifeguard Rusty Waters (Scott Porter).

FAMILIAR BUT FRESH So, it isn’t like Carey’s film is exploring stories or situations that haven’t been mined in both film and television numerous times before. But by centering things around Brandy, by allowing viewers inside the confines of her friendships with Fiona and Wendy, and by lowering the boom on her relationship with her sister, the director is able to showcase discussions and conversations that feel fresh and new. There is a level of authenticity that goes beyond the shenanigans, four-letter words, innuendo, and unseemly sight gags – a freshness that somehow manages to make a young girl coating her hand in butter to better facilitate someone else’s unexpected orgasm amusingly, and somewhat bizarrely, innocent.

It helps considerably that Plaza owns the film, making Brandy’s transformation poignant and personal, no matter how degrading the act she might be contemplating may be. The “Parks and Recreation” and Safety Not Guaranteed scene-stealer impresses, turning in a layered, surprisingly emotional and entirely committed performance that had me grinning ear-to-ear. I never knew what she was going to do or say next – how her conversations with Bilson (so good as her haughty yet still somewhat insecure older sibling), Bill Hader (shockingly terrific as her slacker boss, Willy, manager of the neighborhood’s community pool), Johnny Simmons (Brandy’s former classmate and lab partner who desperately wishes to be much more than that), and both Shawkat and Steele would turn out. It’s a nimble bit of acting, Plaza light on her feet exploring corners and nuances of the character that are oftentimes completely unexpected, giving the movie additional resonance it otherwise would not have.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer FRUITVALE STATION Opens July 26 You can’t see Fruitvale Station without being affected by it. Manipulative? Probably. Agenda-driven? I guess you could make that case. Showcasing only one side of an explosively complicated and controversial story? Sure, more or less, but in some ways that’s the point.

The simple truth is that writer/director Ryan Coogler’s film packs a mighty wallop, and any criticisms you want to throw in its direction don’t really stick, because the cen-

tral themes it’s exploring and the emotions it is mining always feel real. If it is one-sided, if it does only have one point-of-view, that is entirely by design, the filmmaker showing how the potential for change, rebirth, and personal growth can be cut down in an instant thanks to unforeseen acts of prejudice and fear. It is a story of what might have been but sadly was not, reminding everyone of a shot that stunned a city and a country but was then, like so many similar stories, quickly swept under the rug and forgotten, with few, if any, lessons learned afterwards.

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE I can’t say it’s perfect, and as impressed with The To Do List as I am, Carey doesn’t always avoid or rise above the genre conventions she’s gleefully attempting to subvert.

There aren’t any shocks, no real surprises as far as the outcomes are concerned – Brandy’s attempts to separate emotion and feeling from her sexual explorations are, of course, going to backfire. Additionally, while I appreciate the director’s willingness to get as nasty and as extreme as the boys do in their gigantic catalog of similarly themed endeavors (the list is massive and the best ones you already know, so I’m not about to start name-dropping here), there were a couple of gross-out moments I found more

sick than sickly hilarious, and I’m not sure they were altogether necessary.

But the bottom line, and really all that matters, is that ultimately this story works because it trusts both its audience and its characters, adding layers of intelligence and subtext most films of this sort typically eschew. While Carey gets the mood, the ambiance, the era and, most of all, the music just right, she never lets any of that overshadow the path Brandy has set out for herself, reveling in her friendships in ways we rarely see cinematically explored. The To Do List isn’t a great comedy, but it is a very, very good one, and as far as 2013 goes it’s on my personal list of movies I can’t wait to see again.

Wanda (Octavia Spencer), and her 22-yearold son, Oscar (Michael B. Jordan), wants it to be special. He’s grabbed three lobsters for the event even though he’s secretly lost his job at a local (Bay Area) grocery store, keeping this secret from his long-suffering girlfriend, Sophina (Melonie Diaz), mother to the pair’s beautiful four-year-old daughter, Tatiana (Ariana Neal). But even though he’s in desperate need of money, he’s resolving to be a better father, a better son, a better man, maybe even potentially a better husband (if Sophina will have him), these resolutions all perfectly suited to a New Year’s Eve overflowing with possibility.

One day, save for a few key, tragically important flashbacks, is all that is covered in Coogler’s brief, barely 90-minute, documentary-like drama, but that’s more than enough for the story to hit home. Never pulling its punches, fearless in its attempt to paint as true a picture as it can, the director does not sugarcoat, doesn’t attempt to color things in lights outside of grey.

Oscar had his faults. He was not perfect, his young life filled with bad decisions keeping him from realizing his full potential. But it is that potential – his apparent willingness to change, to be the type of father, son, and husband those in his life could be proud of – that was ripped away from him early in 2009, BART police officers making judgments based entirely on how he and his friends looked and acted, rather than on the situation itself. They erased Oscar, canceled out any chance he had to live up to being the man his mother dreamt he would be, and as such showed that America, as far as race is concerned, hasn’t progressed near as far as some – mainly those of an extreme conservative perspective – would like us all to believe.

tripled in both weight and size. Knowing what was going to happen didn’t lessen the tragedy but magnified it, Oscar’s redemptive struggles ending even before they had the chance to begin.

Spencer is mesmerizing, her supporting turn (she also co-produced the film) one of conviction, resilience, and fortitude, making her moment of insoluble regret all the more powerful. For those who felt the Oscar winner only had one side to her, could only give performances like the one in The Help, here is proof she is far more dexterous and talented than some would give her credit for being. The multilayered nuance of her portrayal is staggering, the actress delivering an unforgettable portrait of motherhood that continually speaks volumes even if all Spencer is doing is raising an eyebrow or allowing her shoulders to droop in agony.

Then there is Jordan. Solid in Chronicle, best known for his work in both “Friday Night Lights” and “The Wire,” he is something of a minor revelation as Oscar, the majority of the film zeroing in on him and him alone. He is playful, sincere, angry, damaged, loving, regretful, and so much more, oftentimes in the very same scene, the actor delivering as complex a portrait as any I’ve had the pleasure to witness this year. He doesn’t pull back, doesn’t attempt to hide Oscar’s failings, just as much as he allows himself to revel in the young man’s successes. Scenes between him and Neal, just terrific as Tatiana, crackle with a genuine exuberance that’s as fresh and as exciting as a morning’s first rays of sunshine.

A POWERFUL PUNCH Coogler isn’t hiding anything. In the opening minute he reveals the outcome, so when the end comes it can hardly be considered a surprise. Yet this doesn’t lessen the overall impact. If anything, it somehow increases the enormity of it all, and as soon as the BART train leaves downtown San Francisco to head back to Fruitvale, the lump growing in the pit of my stomach suddenly

CRUCIAL LESSONS Fruitvale Station will undoubtedly be seen in the context of recent events in Florida and elsewhere, and in many ways that’s both to be expected and perfectly fine. But on its own, as a stand-alone release depicting a tragic true story with candor, grace, and realism, Coogler’s movie makes as indelible an impact as anything I’m likely to see in all of 2013. Whether there’s an agenda or not, the film’s core message is one we could all to take a lesson from – the tragic consequences of continuing to not do so loudly, angrily and, most depressing, violently speaking for themselves.

by James Whitely SGN Staff Writer BLACK FLAG EL CORAZÓN July 19 Six months after an announcement of the reformation of the band that arguably launched the hardcore punk movement, Black Flag played its first show in Seattle since May 31, 1986 – three weeks before this particular fan was born. The sold-out, all-ages, Friday show at El Corazón featured two bands playing before Black Flag, both consisting of members from the internationally recognized, iconic punk band’s current lineup.

Ginn being the only constant. The current lineup includes Ginn, named one of the top 100 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone; Ron Reyes, the band’s second vocalist (1979-80), who notably quit the band mid-performance, a stunt Ginn has apparently finally forgiven him for; new member Gregory Moore on drums, who’s worked with Ginn for many years in the three-piece instrumental punk band Gone; and new member Dave Klein on bass, formerly of Screeching Weasel.

It’s not often a contemporary punk show will bring out some of the original ’70s and ’80s scenesters. Much of this older crowd, which appeared more than able to pass for typical “Seattle yuppie” by day,

Opening the show with a 30-minute set was Piggy, a Vancouver, B.C.-based punk ensemble featuring Reyes on guitar. With some clear pop influences, the band touts themselves as “Raw power … all over the rock and roll map. Actually, there is no map, no three-year plan, and no exit strategy.”

Despite the excitement of seeing Reyes onstage, it appeared hard for most to get into

the set, likely because of anticipation – the knowledge that as soon as they went offstage, they’d see Greg Ginn.

GOOD FOR YOU Ginn’s new band, Good For You, took the stage at 9:30. At one year shy of 60, he’s as dynamic on the guitar as ever, and he’s got a theremin to boot. Renaissance man Mike Vallely lends his voice to the band. Vallely, a professional athlete who originally distinguished himself skateboarding, is also a professional wrestler, hockey player, boxer, actor, and stuntman. Save Vallely, the four-piece consists of three members of the Black Flag lineup and, from the degree to which they all improvise, it’s evident they’re

showing off what they can do outside of Black Flag’s revival.

Good For You is characterized primarily by heaving guitars, frantic and improvised at times; gritty, angsty lyrics composed by Ginn and Vallely; and mid-tempo power drumming, played by Moore for the duration of the tour as they’ve yet to find a stable drummer.

Good For You/Black Flag bassist Klein, the youngest member of either band, seemed to have no trouble keeping up – he’s extremely skilled. Much like Black Flag’s second studio album, My War (1984), Good For You’s debut album, Life Is Too Short to Not Hold a Grudge, released earlier this year, features “Dale Nixon” on bass. “Dale Nixon” is Ginn’s longtime pseudonym. As capable as Ginn may be, after a four-minute Klein bass solo I’m left thinking it’s a shame

they didn’t scout him before they made the record.

Despite the fact that everyone was there to see Black Flag, and three of the four members were onstage not playing the songs fans came for, the set was still outstanding in its own right. By their second number, they had a pit going and it lasted for most of the rest of the set. I wouldn’t have expected any less from Ginn.

As the set went on and the mosh pit heated the venue, Vallely, an understandably intense fellow given his professional background, seemed to be perspiring far more than any mortal man should be capable.

Sweat flew from him as he moved around the stage, making neon from gelled stage lights before disappearing toward the floor.

After 70 minutes they finished at 10:40. I was already pretty blown away and I’d still yet to see Black Flag.

BLACK FLAG Band reformations after long periods of time are understandably polarizing among fans. Black Flag is no exception, but inside El Corazón no such disunity was apparent.

Crust punks, Queer punks, skate punks, skinheads (punk movement predating the neo-Nazi appropriation of the style), Gay punks, Black Flaggers (of course), hooligans, Misfits – punks of every variety, from every gritty corner of punk subculture began chanting the name of the iconic hardcore band in unison as they prepared to take the stage. When Black Flag began at 11:10, the pit re-formed immediately and didn’t stop until the show was over.

They began with a several minute jam session, then proceeded to play “Revenge,” “I’ve Had It,” “Nervous Breakdown,” “Fix Me,” “The Chase” (new), “Blood and Ashes” (new), “Depression,” “No Values,” “Now Is the Time” (new), “Six Pack,” “TV Party” (updated with modern references), “It’s Not My Time to Go Go” (new), “I’m Sick” (new), “Black Coffee,” “Gimme Gimme Gimme” (with a hell of a solo by Moore), “Police Story,” “Wallow in Despair” (new), “Down in the Dirt” (new), “Can’t Decide” (a near-10 minute version), “Rise Above,” “Jealous Again,” and “Louie, Louie.”

Virtually every song was done in either rapid succession or broken by a solo. Ginn’s guitar seemed to never stop. Nearly everyone in the venue echoed the classic songs, often being prompted to do so by Reyes. By “Depression,” security were puncturing water bottles and spraying them into the crowd to keep people cool.

Reyes’ voice doesn’t have the simple shouting quality it used to. His voice is more modern, but not quite contemporary; it’s deep, but not overly guttural. His attitude, or the way he presents himself as a front man, likewise seems updated. At moments he’s reminiscent of Henry Rollins, Black Flag’s fourth vocalist and the best-known member of the band overall.

Moore, who has said he prefers to play barefoot in order to feel the vibrations of the stage, had his moments and certainly seems to have a stage connection with Ginn. Klein is a tremendously surprising talent, however. Even Ginn acknowledged his solo time during “Down in the Dirt,” as most of the venue cheered for him. Klein may very well do justice to standout bassist Kira Roessler, who played with the band from 1983 to ’85.

Naturally, Ginn was a sight to be seen.

Many say that the band’s early problems finding a reliable bass player contributed to the development of his distinctive sound.

At times his play style is overtly technical, while at others it’s completely unrehearsed and erratic. Ginn played two 70-minute sets, sold out a venue with a capacity of 700, sent most concertgoers home drenched in sweat from head to toe, and sent a very clear message to Seattle that Black Flag has returned.

Said,” infused with a bit of bluegrass. Afterwards, McCartney removed his blazer and joked, “This is my only wardrobe change.”

At the end of “Let Me Roll It,” he attached an extended guitar solo as a tribute to Seattle native Jimi Hendrix, and then shared the story with the audience about meeting the master guitarist in London in the 1960s.

A gorgeous rendition of “Maybe I’m Amazed,” which the icon reminded us was penned for his then-wife Linda, found him tapping gently on a piano that was slightly perched from the stage level. Many concertgoers on the field danced jubilantly to several upbeat numbers, such as “We Can Work It Out” and “Lady Madonna.” But there were also calmer moments during the show, like a romantic run-through of “And I Love

the first chorus of “Live and Let Die” and continued with a colorful display of explosives. It was an amazing sight to behold, all the while the Bond theme song was blaring beautifully throughout the filled-to-capacity baseball stadium. The main set concluded with a rousing performance of “Hey Jude,” with McCartney offering both genders the opportunity to outshine each other on the harmonious chorus.

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer PAUL McCARTNEY SAFECO FIELD July 19 Two hours and forty-five minutes. Thirtynine songs. Fireworks. Confetti. And a surprise Nirvana reunion on top of it all. Paul McCartney didn’t just give Seattle fans an

classic Beatles songs. He quickly followed with “Junior’s Farm,” a rock gem from his Wings days. He then went back to the Beatles era for “All My Loving.”

Impressively, the legendary musician was supported only by a handful of band members and no backup singers. McCartney switched guitars on almost every song, including a vintage piece that was used in the original recording of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely

SET LIST SURPRISES McCartney carefully constructed the set list to include a few songs that had never been performed in Seattle – not by the Beatles, nor Wings, nor solo. Among these was “Another Day” and a very fun rendition of “All Together Now,” one of the quirkiest Fab Four tunes off their Yellow Submarine album. It was also the live world premiere of “Sometimes,” written by George Harrison, that began with McCartney strumming a ukulele.

A huge singalong erupted for “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” as a camera roamed the field and caught fans mouthing the lyrics. “Band on the Run” was nostalgic, sounding as remarkable as when it was released 40 years ago. While McCartney performed “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” images of famous Russian figures flashed behind him on a billboard-

joined Sir Paul for a dizzying jam session, highlighted by “Cut Me Some Slack,” a track birthed from this collaboration. Everybody stayed on stage for a thrilling runthrough of “Get Back.”

But it wasn’t over yet. The second encore was even more stacked with a shimmering delivery of “Yesterday” as those in the stands waved their lighted cell phones, and an all-hands-on-deck performance of four Beatles songs – “Helter Skelter,” “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight,” and “The End” – closed it out. The concert climaxed with additional fireworks shooting up into the darkened sky.

Despite poor organization by Safeco Field management, where ticketholders on the field were required to stand in ridiculously long lines to get wristbands, the show was simply astounding. McCartney at the ripe age of 71 is still an impeccable live act.

There was no video montage or hoopla surrounding his initial appearance – he just waved to the crowd and dove into the first number, “Eight Days a Week,” one of many

Paul McCartney is the cream of the crop, and for those who witnessed him in person last weekend in Seattle, they may have just seen the best show of their lives.

Not so badass

Courtney Love rises to the occasion but fails to transcend it

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer COURTNEY LOVE THE MOORE THEATRE July 23 Even in 2013 I won’t part with my copy of Hole’s My Body, the Hand Grenade rarities compilation, nor will I ever forget lying around my girlfriend’s apartment in 1994 when she and her roommate played Live Through This manically all summer like the official soundtrack to pissed-off female solidarity that it was. That fall, Hole played the Houston nightclub where the three of us worked. It was Halloween night, six months after Kurt Cobain committed suicide and four since Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff overdosed. There were concerns whether Courtney, unpredictable and reportedly running

World,’ ‘Celebrity Skin,’ ‘Malibu,’ ‘Skinny Little Bitch,’ and more.” A relatively wellbehaved Love, now 49, delivered the hits as advertised, give or take a few odds and ends like “Gold Dust Woman” and “Pretty on the Inside.” Clearly displeased with the turnout, Courtney repeatedly commented on the size of the Moore, its “skid-row Seattle” location, the number of attendees (for the record, the theater appeared full from floor level, though perhaps the numbers were boosted by last minute Groupon-style deals, of which there were reportedly many). Given the circumstances – no new album since 2010’s lukewarm Nobody’s Daughter – perhaps the world-weary Courtney should’ve lightened up and lowered her expectations just a little. “It’s OK, we’ll be back in December and we’ll have a new record then,” she said (it’s rumored Love is working on

As hands shot up around the room it became apparent that Ms. Love knows which side her bread is buttered on. “Thank fucking God,” she said, leading off with “Plump.”

Art collectors from all over North America come to the festival to add to their collections, and many attendees leave the festival as first-time art buyers.

The festival was founded in 2003 by photographer Jim Duvall, current board president of the Foundation for Sex Positive Culture. As an erotic artist, Duvall noticed that there was a demand for his and his contemporaries’ work, yet galleries were generally unwilling to hang erotic art. “I remember thinking, ‘this work needs to be shown’ and realizing that we would have to show it ourselves,” he said. The festival aims to meet the need for a venue and satisfy those demands, and in the past 10 years it has given hundreds of artists the chance to show their work to audiences numbering in the thousands.

If you can read everyone’s mind, everyone is a sexual being: walking around, covering up, and denying it.”

Duvall views this as the biggest reason for the festival: “People can see thousands enjoying the art, get validation on their sexuality, on the diversity that surrounds them.

Friends can view different pieces of art and see what speaks to them – to their heart.

Even if the friends of the person don’t comprehend the message of the artwork, they still respect each other afterwards.”

“Art is a powerful way to share experience and make emotional connection,” added Iannicelli. One of her personal goals is to exhibit art that communicates the erotic so well that a person can look at it and see the eroticism in it, even if what it depicts is of no sexual interest to them.
