new musicals try to capture momentum, and have attended most of their new Beta Series readings of fully produced but still in-development new works.

I love theater in general, but the icing on my love affair cake is musicals. And frankly, with all that said, I think that Justin Huertas is creating new musicals that are so original and so “him” that no one else can match his freshness and “nowness”! I’m not a Gen-Xer or whichever generation he is, so in some ways, he doesn’t write “for me.” But I feel inside what he’s doing and I think he is on the verge of becoming the break-out star of musical theater – nationally – that some have been predicting.

His latest musical, The Last World Octopus Wrestling Champion, clearly has raised his bar of sophistication in terms

of storytelling and musicianship. But even typing that title onto this document makes me smile because it’s such a randomly odd title. And then I find out that there really was a sport called octopus wrestling and that Puget Sound did have world championships. Mind blown.

Justin, himself, in the program notes, references his growing up with cartoon superheroes and action figures, and in this musical, he creates a badass superhero mother (Corinna Lapid Munter) with nowgrown children who has a black belt or two and a secret trophy for being the World Octopus Wrestling Champion! Why she feels she needs to keep that a secret is the main issue in this musical.

The beginning of the musical, currently on stage at Artswest in an appropriately moody production helmed by Mathew Wright, is a bit murky, and the intro song “The Undertow,” is a bit chewy and hard to swallow. It lays out a lot of the exposition

for the entire musical and is the least successful song. Even so, if you pay attention, you do get both a sense of the atmosphere of what will come and the layout of the story. The atmosphere is definitely the most successful part.

Grace, the mother, has an older son, Todd (Christian Quinto), and a younger daughter, Lee (Rachel Guyer-Mafune).

Todd knows Grace’s whole secret, and reluctantly has kept that secret from his sister all these years. Todd has been instructed to hide the trophy where no one will find it. Somehow, it becomes the linchpin that could open the door to something that could threaten Lee. Justin’s writing often focuses on the outsider, the misfit, or on the one who feels outside or ill-fitting, even if that person doesn’t look like they wouldn’t fit in. Lee thinks something about her is different, though she doesn’t appear to be any different than anyone else.

It’s only when she makes a magical connection with Nia (Porsha Shaw) that strange things begin to happen to both of them.

Only Justin, I think, could make a song entitled “Tentacle Hand”!

The other character in this five-hander is a young marine biologist who happens to be an expert in octopuses (Tyler Rogers)! Who would have thunk it!? When the whole musical is about octopuses, it just so happens that an expert wanders by and inserts himself!

Much of the music involves the cast moving in and out of “narrator” mode, where they all help each other tell the story.

The five cast members are all terrific singers and actors and Munter is completely convincing as Grace, that badass mother.

Puget Sounders will recognize every Pacific Northwest reference, since the locale is here. The musical is rich with local color and places and everyday events. The UW campus is prominently featured.

This is a piece that demands your imagination as well as attention. People turn into other beings but no one on stage actually changes costumes into any strange-colored being. It’s description and song lyric and imagination. In many ways, that is more powerful and it makes you help create the story for yourself.

Lex Marcos’ stripped down set of a large rock-colored platform and some movable octagons is as simple and effective as can be. Similarly, Zanna King’s lighting is not flashy or colorful, but helps create that moody, emotional feel.

It’s a feel-good story that will call to Gen-X, Gen-Y or -Z or whatever-ers. Or maybe to anyone who ever feels out of place and awkward and wonders if they fit in.

GreenStage will kick off its 31st season of FREE Shakespeare in Seattle-area parks July 12. This summer’s lineup includes some interesting takes on the Bard’s tales.

In 2019 we celebrate the centennial of congressional passage of the 19th Amendment, which when ratified in 1920 gave women the right to vote. Director Jennifer Crooks has a troupe of Women’s Suffragists – “Shakespeare’s Shrews” – perform The Taming of the Shrew as part of a raucous protest demonstration for Women’s Rights.

The story of strong-willed, outspoken Katherine and arrogant Petruchio’s attempts to tame her into marriage at the entreaty of the men of Padua makes for rich material as Shakespeare’s Shrews tackle marriage, gender roles, and social hierarchies.

For Henry IV, Part 2, director Chris Shea is swapping gender roles, casting three key characters – the King, Hal, and Falstaff – as women and played by women.

This play is a tale of two Englands, one of means and privilege and one of salty earth, and probes what happens when these two worlds collide. The stakes are high for both and as the nation shifts, clear winners and losers emerge.

Part 2 is the third play in Shakespeare’s eight-play, double-tetralogy of history plays chronicling the reigns of Richard II, Henrys IV, V and VI, and culminating with Richard III. This year’s Backyard Bard shows will be The Merry Wives of Windsor and Measure for Measure, both helmed by GreenStage artistic director Erin Day. Backyard Bard presents two stripped-down productions of Shakespeare’s plays, each cut to one hour long, and both performed by the same four versatile actors. Sundays are double-feature days!

The GreenStage season runs July 12 through August 17.

Director Crystal Dawn Munkers leads an exhilaratingly updated take on the battle of the sexes and the age-old need to smash the patriarchy – complete with operatic warrior maidens, a cross-dressing trio of dandies, and a bit of magic.

The brilliant, assertive Princess Ida has sequestered herself and her court in the Castle Adamant, dedicating themselves to the study of the higher arts and absolutely, utterly forswearing the company of men. And the men – including her promised fiancé, Prince Hilarion – are not taking it well.

What follows is a hilarious adventure as The Prince and his friends try to win back their betrothed before war breaks out between the antiquated men of the kingdom and the warrior maidens of Castle Adamant.

Surprises, twists, and turns abound as disguises are revealed, hearts are laid bare, and magic is unleashed at Castle Adamant.

Seattle G&S is starting a series of productions engaged in “Challenging the Canon.”

Like any collection of classic literature or drama, the works of Gilbert & Sullivan often contain material that is problematic in our world today. Princess Ida is no different, having originally been written as a critique of female liberation and the up-and-coming theories of Charles Darwin.

Fortunately, as with Shakespeare and the Greeks, the works of Gilbert & Sullivan are public domain, so we are allowed to engage with the show and edit, cut, rewrite, and reshape as needed to turn the problematic canonical piece into a show that is relevant

and appealing to audiences today.

Director Crystal Dawn Munkers and her team have turned Princess Ida into a compelling feminist tale that champions the women it was originally written to mock and reinforces concepts of equality and intersectional feminism that could be taken out of newspapers today.

continued from cover for years. Theatre 9/12 has chosen the play to reflect on the current moment in U.S. history. The play also works as a commentary on the current #MeToo movement and how difficult is it to believe women when they say they have been violated.

Death and the Maiden focuses on a mid-level political appointee to a new government, Gerardo Escobar (Chip Wood), and his wife. Paulina (Cynthia Geary) has become a recluse, protected by Gerardo from too much agitation. Gerardo has been offered a prestigious appointment to a government taking over from a recent dictatorship. Trust in the government is close to non-existent, but Gerardo would be investigating crimes of the dictatorship with an eye toward justice and reconciliation.

Gerardo gets a flat tire. A stranger, Dr. Medina (Robert A Barnett), happens by to drive him home so Gerardo is not stranded.

But who is this stranger? Does he have a more sinister connection to the couple?

Paulina believes that he does. In fact, we soon see this passive, emotion-cramped woman take Dr. Medina hostage and accuse him of being the doctor who raped and tortured her 15 years before!

Gerardo is appalled at her behavior and it is now her job to convince him that she has not gone crazy. But has she also jeopardized his promotion? Will Dr. Medina go to the

authorities and have her arrested? How will she successfully get out of this wild situation?

The play is a cat and mouse game for the audience, really, to challenge you and what you believe when you hear the characters talk.

A woman is mentally ill and wrongly believes a man is her years-ago abuser. Or a woman really knows who the man is and her husband is challenged to support her. Or a man is only

playing at good-Samaritan behaviors in order to play with a man and his wife.

There are a lot of layers and each of the three actors is terrific in possibly misdirecting you, the audience, so you don’t know who to believe. Then you have the issue of the gun: will she shoot it? won’t she? will she kill him? will she just hurt him? is it just for power and leverage? You Decide.

Fitfully funny Stuber an entertaining comedic rideshare

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer STUBER Now playing Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) is a mild-mannered clerk at a Los Angeles sporting goods store who moonlights as an Uber driver and who also has a massive undeclared crush on his longtime friend Becca (Betty Gilpin).

Detective Vic Manning (Dave Bautista) is a veteran officer who, just hours after Lasik surgery, receives a call from a longtime informant that notorious drug dealer Teijo (Iko Uwais) has come back to the city to handle a major narcotics shipment. Unable to see clearly for the next 12 or so hours after his surgery, Vic ends up scheduling an Uber and it is Stu who arrives to pick him up. The detective forces his new driver to join him on his mission to apprehend Teijo by putting the man’s five-star rating in jeopardy, the duo entering into an uneasy partnership that over the course of the day will end up fundamentally changing both of their lives forever.

High-concept buddy action-comedy Stuber is an ’80s-style throwback in the vein of 48hrs., Midnight Run and especially 1986’s Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines and directed by Peter Hyams. Not that screenwriter Tripper Clancy (Four Against the Bank) and director Michael Dowse (Goon) don’t give things an entirely modern bent. Along with having the core feature of the scenario revolving around the hiring of an Uber driver, the filmmakers also root the pair’s initial antagonism and eventual friendship in varying concepts of masculinity and manhood perfect for today’s #MeToo conversations. This aspect gives the film an additional layer of weightiness that ground the proceedings nicely, and as absurd and cartoonish as events become there is still a character-driven authenticity to many of the interpersonal dynamics that are frequently refreshing.

It helps considerably that Dowse and Clancy ended up with Nanjiani and Bautista as their stars. Much like the casting of Crystal and Hines in the aforementioned Running Scared, these two actors showcase magnificent chemistry and pinpoint comedic timing. They also manage to craft a believably complex relationship that richly builds in a number of various idiosyncratic ways as the film goes on. Their give-andtake is obnoxiously humorous yet also still emotionally cathartic, Stu and Vic learning new ways to become better men – better human beings – than they were before they entered into one another’s company. Nanjiani and Bautista find a variety of ways to make all of this work no matter what sort of nonsense Clancy’s script requires them to do, the two actors tag-teaming the material with a type of effortless aplomb that’s reasonably stupendous.

If only Dowse was as good at staging action as he is at pacing comedy. Hyams might have been a veteran Hollywood

journeyman, his resume littered with solid genre favorites like Capricorn One, 2010, Outland, The Presidio, Timecop and The Relic, but he still knew how to deliver crackerjack thrills and chills. Oftentimes working as his own cinematographer, he would choose long extended takes while also centralizing the majority of the action in order to keep the viewer visually attuned to what was happening, judicially editing things in a crisp, clean manner that only helped augment the adrenalized events happening up on the screen.

Initially it looks as if Dowse is going to be able to do the same. An opening prologue featuring Batista and his Guardians of the Galaxy castmate Karen Gillan (in an effective cameo as a fellow LAPD detective) is marvelous. Along with cinematographer Bobby Shore (The Invitation) and editor Jonathan Schwartz (The Spy Who Dumped Me), the director assembles a bone-crunching sequence that’s pretty darn outstanding. But as the movie goes on

Dowse seems to eschew the style utilized during this opening for a more quick-cut, hyper-edited aesthetic that, while not making things entirely incoherent, does reduce the excitement quotient by a fairly large amount. Worse, it reduces the singular talents of Uwais to virtual irrelevance, and where Teijo at first appears to be on the way to becoming a singularly monstrous villain worth gleefully hissing at, by the end he’s reduced to being an energetic annoyance and nothing remotely memorable.

Somehow it all ends up working out even with these missteps. Clancy’s screenplay deftly analyzes both Stu and Vic with mischievous introspective honesty, their dual forms of masculinity put under a microscope in order to determine their inherent levels of toxicity. Each has a lot to learn and even more to admit about themselves, their unexpected day of mutual bonding forcing them to do just that. All of this gives Nanjiani and Bautista plenty of room to flex their comedic muscles. More importantly, it also gives supporting players like Gilpin and Natalie Morales (portraying Vic’s tech-savvy artist daughter Nicole) lots of room to make an impression as well, both adding a great deal of humorous punch whenever they get the chance to be a part of the story.

Mira Sorvino is woefully underutilized as Vic’s superior officer Captain McHenry, her character strangely disappearing just at the point things start getting the most interesting. The film’s climax is also strangely undercooked, and if not for Nanjiani and Bautista’s undeniable charms I’m not sure I’d have stayed interested in what was happening all the way until the end. But they are terrific, and the laughs littered throughout this comedic action romp are genuinely hysterical. Stuber is a fun little trip into the ridiculous, and while I’m not about to give this cinematic rideshare a five-star rating, it seems to me three out of four should be more than adequate.

Jeffrey Moose Gallery (181 Winslow Way E F, Bainbridge Island, WA) is proud to announce an exhibition of paintings by indigenous artists from Yuendumu in Australia’s Central Desert for the months of July, August and September. A reception will be held on First Friday, August 2nd from 6pm to 8pm.

Traditional ground paintings by these artists, known as Warlukurlangu (Home of the Fire Dreaming) made history in Paris, 1989, part of the international survey, “Magiciennes De La Terre.” At this sensational exhibit of Indigenous art from throughout the world, a group of men from Yuendumu packed tons of desert earth and crushed flowers from home, shaping the material into an enormous “Ground Painting” to honor the Yarla Jukurrpa, a creation story about the bush potato.

Several works by Warlukurlangu artists are on display in the Seattle Art Museum’s third floor galleries. It was through the Kaplan/Levy Collection shown at SAM that Jeffrey Moose was connected to this remote desert art co-op. On exhibit will be works by 14 painters from the center.

Dot paintings are images rendered from an aerial perspective which use symbols to represent people, animals, plants, weather systems and other forms in telling ancient creation stories. In their original form, these stories are part of the Song Lines, complex sets of story-poems recited in rhythmic pattern that link places across the Australian continent.
