How about something along the lines of proclaiming a sequel/spinoff to 1976 Academy Awardwinner Rocky, a movie that’s already had five proper sequels, one of the year’s best motion pictures? Yeah. Can’t say I saw that one coming, either. But that’s exactly what writer/director Ryan Coogler’s Creed is,

a movie that both embraces the ideas and themes from Sylvester Stallone’s enduring series while also bravely and dynamically forges its own unique path. It’s darn near perfect, the film an entertainment knockout for every single one of its 132 breathlessly paced minutes.

“Stripper Circus: The Dirtiest Show on Earth” is every bit of what it promises.

There is a sea of strippers (male adult porn industry dancers from LA), drag queens that are far left of pageantry and center stage of camp fun and new drag glamour, and weekly special guests such as Andrew Christian Underwear model Pablo Hernandez who sang his Youtube hit “Bitch I’m a Bottom” (to the tune of Madonna’s “Bitch I’m Madonna”) at the Opening Night party

on November 12. Last week’s special guest entertainer was the one and only Cake Moss.

Did I mention strippers? On November 12, “Stripper Circus” owner and promoter Paul Nichols brought Fleshjack model and porn superstar Trenton Ducati, “Stripper Circus” all stars Michael, Dan Bevan, David Rest and Eddie, plus Falcon Pornstar Scott Riley. There’s holiday viewing but also a lot of laughs to be had. Several theaters are reprising productions that bring people back again and again. There are shorts fests and new plays and comedy sketches. A month stuffed with something for everyone!

A Christmas Carol, ACT Theatre, 11/27-12/30 This is the 40th year of this 90-minute holiday tradition by Charles Dickens, adapted by Gregory A. Falls. Come From Away – and see this show!

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer COME FROM AWAY SEATTLE REPERTORY THEATRE Through December 13 Come From Away is a new musical being presented at the Seattle Repertory Theatre. Based on their true stories, the musical tells the tale of the close to 6,700 passengers and crew, from the thirty-eight flights, which were grounded in Gander, Newfoundland the morning of September 11, 2001. The musical isn’t about the American tragedy as much as it is about the extreme humanity, generosity, and friendship extended to the international passengers by the residents of a small, sleepy, almost forgotten village in Canada.

It is no secret that the morning of September 11, 2001 changed most Americans, if not the world, and how we view those foreign to us. Once the attacks occurred, all flights were immediately denied permission to fly through American airspace.

All flights coming into and out of the United States were grounded, a good number of them in Gander, Newfoundland. The morning was ordinary for the residents of the Canadian village until 38 planes were diverted to their airport. The residents of Gander immediately rose to the challenge and gathered food, shelter, water, toiletries, and all other forms of necessities (including animal care for the pets in cargo) all within the space of a few hours. Public housing was immediately designated in schools, churches, auditoriums, and people’s private homes. Passengers were from all over the globe with some not speaking any language other than their native tongue. But the people of Gander rallied with their support.

With the unexpected “guest list” almost doubling the town’s population (which was close to 10,000), the passengers and residents overcame their own prejudices and insecurities at a time of world crisis, and discover that humanity can indeed break down barriers and overcome fear.

The subject seems like an odd choice for a musical. But in times when Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables, (or even Carrie) can be made into singing sensations, then why not a musical on 9-11? The

musical phenomenon about a small Canadian town taking care of dozens of strangers forced to land on 9/11, are flying out the door!

Part of the reason is that it’s a short run from opening night. That is very “normal” when a musical is new and in development.

Part of the process is to have preview performances where the writers continue to work on refinements up until opening night.

In fact, the production opened November 18, and allows for four full weeks of performance. Sometimes new musicals only have two or three weeks after opening!

But by far the biggest reason tickets are flying out the door is that this is undoubtedly the best musical to hit Seattle in…. a long time. It has a kick-ass major cast (all 12 are Broadway vets or Broadway-ready, some with extensive Canadian credits).

That’s good because there is every expectation that the show will get to Broadway and soon! The book, sharp and refined, and music, and lyrics by Canadians Irene Sankoff and David Hein are catchy!

thing that makes this work is that the plot does NOT focus on the tragic event itself, but definitely more on the humanity that brought the rest of the world together. The actual terrorist attack is the “elephant in the room,” so to speak, that we, the audience, know is there, we know what is happening, we can see the actors’ reactions, but we are not subjected to the blatant bombardment of images, grief and actions from the direct attack. Instead we are given the uplifting stories of how a community rose to the occasion, went above and beyond their necessities, and how the lives of the passengers and crew on those planes (and of those living in Gander) were forever changed afterwards. The authors chose to focus on a few

lives, of common passengers, that allow audience members to identify and relate to their actions. One couple is so extremely changed by the incident, that they break up after their return to the States; while another two people meet by circumstances and fall in love. An African-American man experiences for what seems to be the first time in his life, what it is like to be treated as a person instead of a person-of-color; a powerful yet subtle realization for the audience as well. Even a passenger from Egypt feels the pressures of being Middle Eastern on that fateful day, and how the other passengers react to him.

There isn’t any one particular role in this musical but rather several leading players

that double up on parts. Jenn Colella plays Beverley, one of the pilots of the grounded plane. Beverley gets to sing “Me and the Sky,” a love ballad about being a young girl wanting to pilot her own plane, in a time when that wasn’t allowed, and how she managed to find her dreams. Rodney Hicks plays Bob, an African-American man flying home to Manhattan. Mr. Hicks does an excellent job showing how a person-ofcolor reacts to the way they are treated in both positive and negative ways. His role could be considered “comic relief” if the points he made weren’t so poignantly real.

Broadway veterans (although not the only ones in this show) Kendra Kassebaum, Eric Ankrim, and Chad Kimball (Tony Award Nomination for Memphis) all do excellent work in their individual roles of Newfoundlanders, and passengers on the plane. Each person, including the orchestra, in this show gets to shine at one point or another, and they all work together to put on a fantastic production.

There needs to be a Cast Recording of this musical. If there is not one in the works yet, there needs to be! The songs and lyrics are beautiful. The book, music, and lyrics are by the team of Irene Sankoff and David Hein and they do a fantastic job. The songs are a mixture of traditional Broadway songs; large group numbers without the “jazz hands” exploitation, and beautiful, haunting numbers that are truly elegant.

While there are only a few solo songs, they promote the characters that sing them, exploring their worlds and emotions, as only songs in a musical can do.

Come From Away is a wonderful evening at the theater. It is one of the best “PreBroadway” shows to come through Seattle.

Having its premier at La Jolla Playhouse earlier this year, Come From Away reminds us that humanity comes from the heart, and that even at times of crisis, human beings can still surprise one another. At a time when the world is again in turmoil facing terrorist attacks, Come From Away is a perfect reminder that at one time WE were the strangers in a strange land, and we were the ones dependent on the kindness of strangers.

Director Christopher Ashley (from the La Jolla Playhouse co-producers) and choreographer Kelly Devine work the rhythms of this show to a fare-the-well [***change to fare-thee-well]. Every movement and every moment count.

The on-stage band, supervised by Ian Eisendrath, is ready, willing, and able. The acoustic instrumentation and the simple use of odd instruments (the “ugly” stick) adds to the authentic Newfoundland sound.

The beat is compelling, making it hard for the audience to sit still.

The staging is deceptively simple, on a rotating platform (designed by Beowulf Boritt). Dialect coach Joel Goldes had to have been extremely busy with the multitudes of accents called for by the international passengers.

So, what’s it all about? We all know so much about September 11th… and we may even have realized that there was a no-fly zone established by the FAA over the entire United States that day. But maybe you, like I, did not think about where all the flights in the air were going to end up!

Newfoundland. The whole town wasn’t more than 7,000 people, yet all of a sudden they had to play host to more than 3-dozen planes full of strangers and even animals (there were pregnant monkeys on one plane!). The musical focuses on real people’s stories of landing there that day and also on townsfolk who describe scrambling for beds, food, diapers, everything you can think of that people suddenly need.

Gander and surrounding small communities rose to the occasion and poured as much hospitality as they could around.

It’s not a secret what happened, but it’s a great story of human kindness and pulling together in the face of emergency. Relationships born from that unique experience survive to this day.

Multitudes of characters speak to the audience about their experiences, but that device doesn’t pale over the brisk 100 minute (no intermission) musical. The book is evenly balanced between the townsfolk and the passengers, though those that changed the most over the several days were passengers who experienced the hospitality of Newfoundlanders and found camaraderie with each other.

Though there are over 24 different characters played by the 12 cast members, you never feel confused about who’s doing the talking/narrating. If there is anyone said to be a lead character, it would be Jenn Colella as the captain of one flight, Beverley. Colella even looks like Beverley (who was present opening night)! In addition, locals Eric Ankrim and Kendra Kassebaum, ex-local Chad Kimball, and Patrina Bromley, Joel Hatch, Rodney Hicks, Lee MacDougall, Caesar Samayoa, Q. Smith, Astrid Van Wieren and Sharon Wheatley star.

So, now that you’ve gotten your tickets, prepare to be entertained by one of the hands down best productions our area has seen in quite a while. It may make you wanna kiss a cod!

Celebrating 41 Years!

UW World Dance brings astonishing work of Akram Khan Company to Seattle

UW WORLD DANCE AKRAM KHAN COMPANY “KAASH” (2002) GEORGE MEANY HALL UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON November 12 A man –­ bare-chested, bare-footed, wearing a long dark skirt over long trousers, stands on the unlit stage with his back to the audience. The house lights are up. He stands there a long time. Is this intentional?

Or is there a glitch in the music, the light cues? Could we be engaged in some kind of contest? Who will break their silence first, the dancer or the viewer? The audience begins to whisper and titter – we don’t know what to do with this statue-like man standing for minutes on a bare stage. The stage itself is interesting – a blurry field of maroon on a white scrim, a white floor.

We begin to wonder if this is another butoh dance of stillness, as we saw last month with Sankai Juku.

Suddenly the lights go out, the stage flashes red, and the auditorium erupts into frenzied drumming – loud, arrhythmic, heart-stopping. It all happens at once and we jump in our seats – and now four more dancers materialize on the right, in long skirts and pants – a bare-chested man, three women with sleeveless tops exposing powerful arms. They stand in a vertical line with right feet anchored, left feet repeatedly lunging forward and back – sideways to the audience – arms pin-wheeling in time to the drumming. At first they do this together, then in staggered patterns, never breaking their line, while the motionless man remains motionless. This first section of Akram Khan’s “Kaash” is surprising, dramatic – even thrilling. The skirts fling themselves out with every lunge, making these gestures seem like temple dances to a massive god. The dancer’s fingers form patterns that look like fans, then duck beaks, always punctuating the stop-motion pose before they lunge again. We don’t know what we’re in awe of, but we are in awe.

For me, the opening of this fifty-five minute dance was the highlight of the evening. The surprise, the unfamiliar gestures, the intensity of the dancers, the contrast between stillness and fervid movement, the mysterious simplicity of the costumes, and the dramatic change of light, all came together in an unforgettable scenario. Akram Khan’s chorography is based upon a style of Indian classical dance called kathak – and if you go online to read about it you see photos of young women dressed in just these trousers and skirts, swirling and forming their fingers into mudras – hand and finger gestures with assigned meanings from Hindu religious practice. It may be that the dance presented at Meany Hall followed the ancient forms, and it would be interesting to know how these forms have been adapted to modern audiences. But the Akram Khan Company did not feel even remotely like an anthropological or documentary demonstration of an Eastern dance for Western audiences. Instead it seemed like a thoroughly modern dance with a vocabulary that clearly referenced something or someplace, but remained mysterious and self-contained. Without prior knowledge of kathak the average viewer would still revel in the excitement and commitment of the dancers and their very challenging dance.

I was fascinated with the rhythm of these patterns, in which dancers made very rapid movements followed by a complete stop in a pose, then some small, tiny gesture with the hands, followed by rapid movements again, then the stop, pose, tiny gesture, etc. The art of the choreographer could be seen in the evolving patterns of dancers in relationship to one another – simultaneous movements, sometimes extremely complex – or sequential movements that demonstrated a single idea in an unfolding of forms and directions. The stop-start nature of the dance was, for me, very original, though I can sense the irony of this observation knowing that it comes from a dance tradition that is hundreds of years old – it’s just original to me.

In the middle section of the work, which was very slow and performed by single dancers, the fascination retreated and my mind was engaged intellectually as individuals seemed to dance through the catalogue of movements that had been introduced so dramatically in the opening sequences. I found this section less compelling, though the tremendous skill and commitment of the dancers was apparent. When the complexities resumed with the full company of five dancers I was drawn back again into the explosive drama of the work, which ended as it began, with frenzied drumming and the contrast of huge arm movements and tiny finger gestures while the dancers moved through swirling patterns. The final sequence, performed by a lone male dancer – very tall and slender – consisted of mudras shaped with the arms on the whole body. The bird-like ending – back to the audience, arms crossed diagonally across the torso and fingers forming waist-high wings – was akin to a blessing, an “amen,” or a “namaste” – a most beautiful farewell.

We can thank Michelle Witt and the UW World Dance programmers for constantly introducing us to forms of dance that truly reveal the world in all its oldness and newness. The Akram Khan Company, based in London but traveling the world, is an example of how our understanding of dance and culture is expanded ever-out-

wards. We are challenged and educated as well as delighted by what we see. For my money it’s the best deal in town – six dance concerts for as little as a $243 subscription. You get to see the greats: The Martha Graham Dance Company, the final tour of Trisha Brown, last year we saw Mark Morris, as well as favorites like Grupo Corpo and truly foreign groups like Sankai Juku

and Akram Khan. It’s appropriate that a great research university should be serving its city in this way – and we dance lovers should respond by supporting it. Christmas is coming – surprise someone you love with a year’s worth of great dance concerts.

“The” – Music: J.S. Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F Major arranged for four-hands piano by Max Reger (2015) Mark Morris and the idiosyncratic songster Ivor Cutler are a marriage made in heaven. “A Wooden Tree” – the title of a sequence of dances to fourteen Cutler songs – is simultaneously risqué, pastoral, and very funny. My favorite was “Deedle, Deedle, I Pass,” a skipping tune played on a wheezing harmonium as Cutler’s quavering tenor sings: “Here is an old country game, it is called Deedle Deedle I Pass.

You take a fair maid through the flowers and lay her down flat in the grass.”

Anyone familiar with Morris’s sense of humor can picture the jolly couples in a country dance suddenly flinging their partners to the ground and pouncing on them.

In the opening sequence we hear Cutler announce that his songs “are in the good old English style” and you can, indeed, hear strains of Handel, Purcell, and the British music hall in his songs – a style that has attracted Morris throughout his career and inspired some of his greatest work. In “A Wooden Tree” we see echoes of “many a youth and many a maid/dancing in the checquer’d shade” from “L’Allegro, Il Penseroso ed Il Moderato,” and we recall the drinking song “Your hay it is mow’d, and your corn is reap’d” from “King Arthur” as the guys strut to “Stick Out Your Chest.” Four couples move from pantomime to reels to square dances in these fourteen sequences, dressed in argyles, vests, knees socks and pleated skirts. They look like whimsical, slightly ironic manifestations of country lads and lasses, just as Cutler’s songs are whimsical, slightly ironic manifestations of old English songs.

An early version of “A Wooden Tree” premiered at On the Boards in 2012 (with an unannounced appearance by Mikhail Baryshnikov!), which was much more cockney in its character and costuming. I must admit I liked that cockney presentation a bit more than the less literal setting of the current dance. There was something about the men in their corduroys and flat caps that resonated with Cutler’s mood – far more cheery and old fashioned than winking and ironic, as the fair maiden flung to the turf would agree:

justly renowned for his embodiment and expansion of music – particularly baroque music. He has a special understanding of its fugues, its ornamented repetitions and its spinning out of themes, and he knows how to make these variations visible without being predictable. When he causes your eyes and your ears to register the same idea in through two ranges of the sensorium, your brain (or your spirit) goes “Oh!” or “Wow!” or even “Hallelujah!” I have always found

Morris’ baroque dances – “L’Allegro,” “King Arthur,” “Mozart Dances,” “Acis and Galetea,” “Dido and Aeneas” – to be sublime, in the sense that they make another world tangible. Catching a glimpse of that other world, where things are complex, beautiful, and orderly, makes those qualities seem possible in this world.

“The” was one of that genre of dances – the embodiment of the baroque idea of beauty, charm, and patterns of order – but

because it was so short and so light, it did not lift the veil for me as the longer works do. Nevertheless, it had the virtue of reminding me of those works and wishing to see them again. And while Mark Morris is wonderfully successful, has built a dance company, studio, school, and ever so many wonderful dances, I still wish he had the resources that Balanchine had at the New York City Ballet, where he could make full-length dances every year for decades.

Morris is at his most brilliant making fulllength works. Yes, dances like “The” and “V” and “Going Away Party,” though short, are unforgettable – but this stage of Morris’ career should be moving him beyond an array of shorter works and towards the big works that come from big challenges.

My point is somewhat confirmed from the other two works of the evening. “Cargo,” used nine of MMDG’s best dancers in an interesting progression of movements around bamboo poles, couched in a narrative of first encounters with strange objects (as in “cargo cults”). The wit of showing us more things to do with a pole than any of us could possibly imagine is well worth seeing, and in any other choreographer it would be a significant accomplishment. But in a dance-maker like Morris, who has the rare power to show us the Mystery, it makes you wonder how this idea would have developed with three times the dancers and an orchestra.

Likewise “Whelm,” a strange narrative of mourning and death, is an interesting idea – black-veiled widow, three black-clad figures who seemed to move in and out of various dimensions of reality – often creating fascinating compositions as mysterious as the Debussy piano sonatas that swirl around them. I enjoyed watching the acting and performing skills of the dancers (Dallas McMurray is particularly compelling) and I enjoyed the imaginative narrative as it unfolded – even though it was impossible to understand fully. I also enjoyed engaging in Morris’s ideas. But I wanted the whole story – the before, the after, the underneath. Because we know what Morris can do with a big stage, a big company, and a big orchestra, I wish he could move beyond working in miniatures.

I know it’s all about the money – and in this regard Morris has pulled off a hat trick: a fully-employed company, live musical accompaniments, and a school/studio for everyone from kids, to aspiring professionals, to those suffering from Parkinson’s disease. What more could we want?

We could want more full-length works.

Where are the Seattle billionaires when we need them? Hey, Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Jeff Bezos, Howard Schultz, Craig McCaw, Gabe Newell, James Jannard, Steve Ballmer – why not devote the interest on one day of your billions – heck, one hour of your billions – to MMDG? Kid-friendly Dinosaur a beautifully animated fable

THE GOOD DINOSAUR Now playing Roughly 65 million years ago, an asteroid flung out of the deepest reaches of space barely missed striking the planet Earth by the slimmest of margins, burning through the night sky like a shooting star hurtling towards oblivion. A few million more years later, a loving pair of long-necked dinosaurs (voiced by Jeffery Wright and Frances McDormand) prepare for the three eggs they’ve proudly guarded to hatch, waiting with bated breath for their children to arrive. The kids, Buck (Marcus Scribner), Libby (Maleah Nipay-Padilla) and Arlo (Raymond Ochoa), are happy to help their parents work their farm, each hoping to one day follow in Poppa and Momma’s giant footsteps, eager to make a lasting mark worthy of remembrance.

The erstwhile runt of the trio, Arlo has trouble combating his fear of the great big world and all the inherent dangers that mysteriously lie within it. After an unspeakable tragedy, he finds himself stranded an unknown distance away from home with no one to help him. Forced by circumstance and curiosity, he slowly begins to make friends with a strange, manic creature of pinkish skin, two legs, two gangly arms and relatively little hair anywhere on his body save atop his head. Nicknaming him Spot (Jack Bright), the two begin the long journey back to the farm, learning to work together as a team as they encounter a number of unforeseen obstacles, not to mention a flock of high-flying predators, all intent on stopping them from reaching their destination.

There’s not a lot to Pixar’s latest animated endeavor The Good Dinosaur. This is basically your average boy-and-his-dog coming of age tale, only in this case the

continued from cover (Phylicia Rashad), raised to be a thinker, not a stinker, Adonis nonetheless finds himself compelled to follow in the footsteps of a father he never met. Now he’s in Philly to meet the one man he thinks can help him realize his dreams of boxing stardom, help him find that proverbial eye of the tiger; former heavyweight champion of the world Rocky Balboa (Stallone).

There’s not a ton more to say plot-wise as far as Creed is concerned. Similarities to Rocky are obvious, and as such figuring out where Adonis is going to go, uncovering the fights he is going to find himself a part of, none of this is particularly surprising.

It’s how Coogler gets there, how he crafts the central relationships that is most interesting, using the same grounded, down to earth philosophy that he utilized so effectively with Fruitvale Station for all of the goings on here.

Simply put, Adonis is just a terrific character. His pain is real. His longing to know who he is, how he belongs, what it means to have a father who was a superstar to millions yet at the same time left him and his birth mother with nothing, all of these aspects to his persona feel genuine. This is

“boy” is a dinosaur and the “dog” is the boy who befriends him like a loving pet.

While the idea that the asteroid that caused the dinosaurs to go extinct actually missed its target is a fun one, honestly I can’t say the film’s five credited writers do anything novel with it, Meg LeFauve’s (Inside Out) finished script far more rudimentary and straightforward than I initially anticipated it would be.

Yet that simplicity is what ends up making the movie kind of wonderful. It focuses intently on Arlo and Spot’s relationship, allows them to learn to communicate without words while developing their budding friendship with intimately grounded grace.

It’s sort of a prehistoric The Black Stallion, allowing silence and movement to speak volumes, rarely over-explaining what is going on, understanding the children sitting

in wide-eyed, rapt attention can put the majority of the pieces together for themselves.

I also loved how the story beautifully looks at the relationship between fear and courage, doing so in a way even the youngest viewers can understand, everything building to a superb coda of acceptance and sacrifice that had me happily reaching for the Kleenex.

The best bits are when the film becomes a full-on Western, Arlo and Spot teaming up with a trio of Tyrannosaurs (the patriarch of which is voiced by a marvelous Sam Elliott) on an erstwhile cattle drive where they’re all forced to stave off an attack from some feathered raptor-like creatures determined to steal the herd. Not only is the sequence spectacularly animated – no shock there – but it is also lovingly introspective, the filmmakers delivering bits of

insight that are wryly profound. I loved this subplot, enjoyed each and every second of it, the payoff featuring this oddball quintet sitting around a roaring campfire talking about their lives just about perfect.

For Pixar, this is pretty simple stuff, never making the attempt to rise to the same sort of heights Inside Out, Wall•E, Toy Story 3 and a small handful of other favorites have so magnificently risen to in the not-so-distant past. But that’s okay. The Good Dinosaur is a children’s fable that is more than content to be exactly what it is and little more. None of which means adults won’t find plenty to cherish, they just won’t latch onto it as strongly as younger viewers undoubtedly will, and for my part I have no problem with that whatsoever.

an underdog story that hits all the requisite beats yet also knows it can’t take place in the same world as the original did. But, at the same time, it still respects it, finding the commonalities between then and now, playing things close to the vest in ways that are honest, heartfelt and true.

The performances are tremendous.

Stallone will arguably get the most press, and I’ll go out on a limb and state he’s likely going to get a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his seventh turn as Rocky, and by golly if he doesn’t deserve the great majority of it. His best performance since Cop Land, maybe since First Blood, potentially since the original Rocky, the veteran action superstar throws himself into this body and soul, tackling the trickier sides of Coogler and fellow writer Aaron Covington’s script with invigorating gusto. He finds depths to the character we’ve never seen before, and I was honestly moved to tears during one pivotal moment where Rocky talks about all he’s lost along the way to becoming a living legend and sports icon.

Thing is, as superb as Stallone is, and he is amazing, I worry that what’s going to be lost in all the sound and fury is just how fantastic Jordan is. For all who thought he was robbed an Oscar nod for Fruitvale Sta-

tion, get ready to get your dander up once again, because he’s even better here, and likely, once again, to have almost no shot to be considered for a Best Actor nomination.

His work as Adonis is stunning. The way he interacts with Stallone. The delicate, naturalistic way he falls into love with the lovely up-and-coming singer living in his apartment complex (memorably portrayed by a dazzling Tessa Thompson). The emotional complexities oozing out of his early conversations with Rashad. How he internalizes his psychological misgiving around embracing his father’s name while still forging his own, individualistic way forward. Jordan encapsulates all of this and more magnificently, not only physically transforming into Adonis, but inhabiting him spiritually as well.

The technical facets are equally glorious. About halfway through Coogler and cinematographer Maryse Alberti (The Visit) stage the first major bout with Adonis, the first full two rounds of which, including the corner break, are showcased in one glorious take, the camera bobbing and gliding through the punches effortlessly. The pair’s staging of the climactic bout, one I should not have to explain the stakes of to anyone who has ever seen a single minute of any of the six previous Rocky movies, is brilliantly

realized, achieving a you-are-there verisimilitude that’s wonderful.

There are delicate grace notes recalling all the previous adventures, most noticeably in how Ludwig Göransson’s (Top Five) rousing, energetic score subtly evokes many of Bill Conti’s more recognizable themes, yet never does so in ways that could be considered heavy-handed or intrusive.

I also love the gentle nod to 2006’s Rocky Balboa as it pertains to the cemetery where Adrian was laid to rest, now joined by her brother Paulie, while other little snippets toying with both Rocky and Rocky II training montages are an absolute treat.

But the core of things remains the characters themselves. Coogler never loses sight of this, does not allow affinity for the previous sequels or an inherent knowledge of sports film clichés get in the way. Adonis and Rocky make one of the year’s best cinematic pairings, their transition from strangers to acquaintances to partners to friends to something so much more absolutely exquisite. The final scenes atop some familiar Philadelphia Museum of Art steps are the ideal coda to a new underdog story that by all rights shouldn’t be this magnificent, Coogler’s Creed a thunderous success that doesn’t just fly, it positively soars.

Spellbinding Brooklyn a romantically charming treat

Domhnall Gleeson and Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn – Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Irish lass is sad to leave her devoted older sister Rose (Fiona Glascott) and her beloved mother Mary (Jane Brennan), but with opportunity so scarce at home heading across the Atlantic to start a new life seems like the best option available to the young woman. But as kind as landlady Mrs. Kehoe (Julie Walters) might be, as understanding a sponsoring priest Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) is, the lass is so heartsick for her homeland she can barely make it through the day without devolving into a blubbery mess.

Things change when Father Flood enrolls her in night school to learn about

bookkeeping, Eilis discovering she has a gift for numbers that she’s electrified by. On top of that, she’s met Tony Fiorello (Emory Cohen), a talkative New Yorker, whose Italian blood is immediately set ablaze by the fiery redhead. The sparks flying between the two are apparent to everyone, the two of them walking the sidewalks of their Brooklyn neighborhood hand-in-hand dreaming of all they’re going to do with their lives in the very near future.

Based on the best-selling book by Colm Tóibín, director John Crowley (Closed Circuit) and screenwriter Nick Hornby (An Education, Wild) team up to bring to life one of the best Irish coming to America tales this side of Jim Sheridan’s 2003 modern masterwork In America. Delivering what could be misconstrued as nothing more than a fluffy romantic comedy with dramatic undertones, sneakily and subtly the movie is actually about so much more.

This is the saga of a youngster becoming her own, confident women ready to take on the world at large, learning who she is and who she was aren’t as far apart as those wanting to keep Eilis standing still would like her to believe.

It’s dazzling stuff, brilliantly brought to life by the breathlessly talented Ronan.

Already an Academy Award nominee for her performance in Atonement when she was still a teenager, she’s followed that up with remarkable turns in films as diverse as Byzantium, Hanna, The Grand Budapest Hotel and How I Live Now. She’s fantastic here, channeling her inner Audrey Hepburn meets Vivien Leigh with spectacular aplomb. There is a lithe, delicately beauteous intensity to her portrait, a human spectacle of transformation and perseverance that’s universal no matter what the age, what the nationality. Ronan leaps off the screen, delivering the kind of undeniably stratospheric performance that instantly lands her in the conversations as being one of the great young actors of today, the way Crowley’s direction and Hornby’s script helps facilitate all of this positively stunning.

I can’t help but wish the two men who come into Eilis’ life weren’t such one-dimensional fantasy figures of post-WWII masculinity (the gently endearing Cohen in the U.S., the soulfully captivating Domhnall Gleeson back in Ireland), neither of them complex enough for my taste. As good as both are, and they are wonderful, it was difficult to take either of them as seriously as I wanted to, and thus my preference as to who our heroine would choose to spend her life with never weighed on me

near as much as I kept hoping it would.

But days after my initial viewing I slowly realized, as pleasing as Eilis’ romantic moments with Tony might be, as meaningful as her return to Ireland and flirtations with Gleeson’s rugby playing golden boy Jim Farrell become, none of that mattered.

What did was how this bright-eyed, whipsmart woman dealt with it all, how she learned to deal with life’s obstacles in order to forge a path uniquely her own. This is a movie of worlds colliding, a child of two nations discovering how to imbed a piece of her motherland inside her heart while at the same time learning to call a new nation thousands of miles across the sea home.

Eilis’ coming of age is breathlessly realized and done so with a wink and smile, everything building to two hands intertwining together as one almost as if they were meant to do so from the first second time itself began.

As a director, Crowley makes a giant leap from showing promise in his previous efforts to realizing it with this. He establishes a strong visual esthetic alongside cinematographer Yves Bélanger (Dallas Buyers Club) that’s superb, allowing composer Michael Brook’s (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) music to amplify the underlying emotions that permeate throughout beautifully. Crowley leads Eilis on her journey with consummate skill, utilizing Hornby’s dexterous, emotion-filled script with naturalistic delicacy. Brooklyn is marvelous, watching it as close to pure bliss as any cinematic confectionary treat I could possibly have imagined myself.

Jolie Pitt’s By the Sea a picturesque enigma

BY THE SEA Now playing Into an unnamed picturesque French seaside resort drives writer Roland (Brad Pitt) and his wife of 13 years, ex-dancer Vanessa (Angelina Jolie Pitt). They walk into the local hotel, taking the premier suite with a large terrace overlooking the rocky inlet that leads out into the ocean. Once inside, as if they’ve done it a million times, they reorganize the living room, moving everything around to maximize the chance Roland will be inspired, potentially crafting a new masterpiece during their stay.

But something is amiss. The passions that once connected the two appears to be missing, Vanessa stares off into the distance as if a piece of her soul has been amputated, looks at Roland as if he personally chopped it off. While he retreats into the bottle, liberally poured by the local restaurateur, Michel (Niels Arestrup), his wife stews in the hotel room, drowning in sorrow while sunning herself on the terrace, a glass of wine her only constant companion.

Then a newlywed couple (Mélanie Laurent, Melvil Poupaud) arrives next door, and suddenly By the Sea takes a turn into the emotionally – and manipulatively – bizarre, writer/director Jolie Pitt embracing the esoteric, psychologically bleak stylings of European filmmakers like Michelangelo Antonioni, Bernardo Bertolucci and Alain Resnais. Following up the hollow theatrics of Unbroken, the Hollywood

superstar throws herself and real life husband Pitt into a maelstrom of tears, booze, cigarettes, soaring musical cues and scenic visuals, emulating the masters of the genre yet never finding a way to make any of what transpires feel like nothing more than facile imitation.

Or is it? It took time for Last Year at Marienbad to be considered a masterpiece, same with films like L’Avventura, A Special Day and Marriage Italian Style. Even Last Tango in Paris ruffled more than a few feathers when it made its debut, some looking at Bertolucci’s sexual imbroglio as too perverse, too uncomforting to be an instant classic. Granted, it didn’t take a lot of time, and those movies weren’t exactly dismissed out-of-hand, almost all earning an Academy Award nomination or two while also appearing on quite a few major critics’ “Best of Year” lists.

But Jolie Pitt’s movie is too imperfect, too beholden to emulating the 1960s and ‘70s motion pictures it is indebted to for that to be the case. It takes too much time and effort for the reasons fueling Roland and Vanessa’s malaise to show their ugly, hurtfully visage. The discussions they do have, at least early on, reek of artifice, and as such becoming involved in what is going on between the pair is tough to do. The movie can feel like nothing more than a picturesque enigma, a perplexing hodgepodge of themes and ideas that can frustrate just as often as they enthrall.

Same time, the introduction of Laurent and Poupaud’s newlyweds, while metaphorically obvious, works exceedingly well, especially considering the way Ro-

land and Vanessa clandestinely keep them under surveillance. There is something fascinating about these sequences, about how the longtime marrieds communicate without words by sitting on the floor, sharing a bottle of wine and peering at what potentially could be mirror images of their former selves a decade past through a peephole suspiciously drilled into the wall separating their rooms. It gives the movie energy, ungainly and uncomfortable, but energy all the same, adding purpose and meaning to Roland and Vanessa’s travails that was not there beforehand.

Then there are the author’s conversations with the widower Michel. Pitt and Arestrup have superlative chemistry, the way they build their friendship filled with rhythms easy to slip into and luxuriate within. Same goes with Christian Berger’s (The White Ribbon) intoxicating camerawork, Ellen Mirojnick’s (Need for Speed) gorgeous costumes and especially Jon Hutman’s (Rock of Ages) marvelous production design. I was also equally floored by composer Gabriel Yared’s (The English Patient) score, his themes echoing throughout with poignant intimacy.

Pitt is in fine form, adding layers to Roland that ebb and flow like the coming of the tide. His enchanting charm after he discovers the peephole and ascertains the value it has for Vanessa is just plain wonderful, while a drunken row with a calm, understanding Arestrup is startling in its primitive intensity. The actor refuses to phone any part of his performance in, losing himself inside the wounded writer with irresistible skill.

The same cannot be said in regards to his Oscar-winning co-star. Once the icy veneer cracks, Jolie Pitt starts to lose her way as Vanessa, relying more upon the false eyelashes, deep black eyeliner and cakedon mascara than on her own emotive talents. While she looks the part, the actress crafting a carnal feminine elegance that recalls the likes of Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida all rolled into one, her histrionic ticks grow increasingly tiresome, making the climactic revelation not nearly as affecting as it should have been.

Thankfully, Jolie Pitt the director is in much better form; and as ponderous, maybe even pretentious, as some of this might be, there was never a moment where I wanted to look away from the screen. The kinetic cruelty of this matrimonial dysfunction is intriguing, and other than a few oddly placed jump cuts to tragic memories and feelings Vanessa can’t allow herself to let go of, as far as the visual journey is concerned there’s rarely a misstep to speak of.

Ultimately, only time will reveal how I really feel about By the Sea, whether or not it becomes something meaningful and thought-provoking or if it just remains a facetious facsimile emulating a style of European cinema it reveres yet fails to understand. Either way, I’m tempted to still give Jolie Pitt props, and I have this sneaking suspicion I’ll be giving the film a second chance to win me over sooner rather than later.

Misty Copeland’s ballet Tale worthy of a look

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer A BALLERINA’S TALE Now playing In 2007 Misty Copeland became only the second female African American soloist at New York’s prestigious American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in its long and storied history, the first in over two decades. Turning heads and on the rise, internationally

renowned choreographer Alexei Ratmansky spotlighted her as the principal in a new staging of Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird” in 2012, cementing Copeland’s status as one of the best ballet dancers in the world.

What no one knew was that the gifted dancer was dealing with a leg injury that would end up requiring surgery that, if not successful, would put her career in jeopardy. Nelson George’s documentary A Ballerina’s Tale spends the majority of its running time chronicling Copeland’s two-

plus year recovery while also attempting to dig a little deeper into the ballet world’s reticence to put minority dancers, no matter how talented they might be, center stage.

It follows her into the doctor’s office for the initial consultation and to long painful hours of rehab where she questions whether or not she’ll be able to fully recover, all of it culminating with her triumphant return to ABT becoming the first woman of color to portray Odette/Odile in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.”

Running less than 90 minutes, the first half of the film is exhilarating. It introduces Copeland, shows her in all her magnetic and charming glory. It celebrates her talents, while also mixing in interesting and informative interviews with those who know most about the ballet world, all of it combining to produce a portrait of an amazing artist worth knowing about. I found myself falling in love both with the dancer as well as the documentary itself, George doing an excellent job of mixing in a variety of voices and elements that are all flat-out wonderful.

But a little into Copeland’s recovery from bone surgery the film oddly becomes less and less thought-provoking as it continues along. The movie is never bad, mind you, the whole thing an enjoyable experience all the way through. But it’s hard not to imagine what could have been, so many moments during the second half where a

few more minutes here, an extra ounce of footage there, all could have easily transformed this into something special. Copeland’s 2014/2015 return to excellence is given particularly short shrift, and it strikes me as odd that the most triumphant portion of the dancer’s story is for some reason glossed over so conspicuously.

Thankfully, George’s ace in the hole is his subject herself. Copeland is captivating, oozing talent and charisma in equal parts. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her, not during our initial introduction to the ABT dynamo as a teenager, to her putting in the work preparing for her star-making turn in “Firebird,” to her painstaking rehab, to her glorious return taking part in a small New York showcase where she blissfully regains lost confidence. Through it all Copeland manages to become larger than life, yet also distinctly human, making her easy to be amazed by, yet equally effortless to relate to, and those type of reactions are certainly nothing to scoff at.

A Ballerina’s Tale might not be a great documentary, never achieving the same level of perfection as its subject so often does dancing across the staged, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Still, I can’t stop wondering what might have been had George dug just a tiny bit deeper, Copeland’s amazing story deserving of a fuller, more complex telling, one I can’t help but hope happens sooner rather than later.

Star-studded Secret a captivating remake

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES Now playing For 13 years retired FBI counterterrorism agent Ray Kasten (Chiwetel Ejiofor) has been obsessing over the case that got away from him, and it had nothing to do with national security. When he was stationed in Los Angeles, he was partnered with local DA investigator Jess Cobb (Julia Roberts), the pair striking up a close friendship that even extended to his taking an interest in her outgoing teenage daughter, Caroline (Zoe Graham). But when Caroline’s body is found in a dumpster next door to a mosque they had under surveillance, the veteran agent becomes obsessed with solving the crime, Deputy District Attorney Claire Sloan (Nicole Kidman) worried Kasten will burn himself out if he can’t find justice for his emotionally devastated partner.

Her fears are well-founded, Kasten’s evidence falling on deaf ears. Turns out, the man likely to have been responsible for the crime was someone then L.A. District Attorney Martin Morales (Alfred Molina) wasn’t interested in prosecuting; and Morales couldn’t understand why those working for him in 2002 didn’t feel the same given the state of world events then.

Now, over a decade late, with Sloan the new D.A. and Kasten certain he’s got new information that will finally bring Caroline’s killer to justice, the seeds appear to be planted for success to sprout. But not ev-

erything is as it seems, and while Jess is apparently onboard with her former partner’s desire to reopen this long discarded cold case, the secrets she’s keeping might be too gigantic for any amount of fanatical sleuthing to be able to overcome.

For those familiar with the Academy Award-winning 2009 Argentinian mystery-thriller The Secret in Their Eyes, what is actually taking place and where the truth ultimately lies in writer/director Billy Ray’s star-studded remake will not catch anyone by surprise. Nonetheless, the movie manages to hold up as its own distinct animal, anchored by a trio of strong performances from the leads that are never less that magnetic, sometimes even bordering on magnificent (especially as it pertains to Roberts). While never rising into the realm of excellence, this is still a solid, intelligently constructed policier that gets the job done, and for those unfamiliar with the original motion picture I’m fairly certain the central twists and turns will likely catch most somewhat off-guard.

Ray does spell things out far too clearly at times, especially near the end, something the original film never does. The overlapping flashbacks play themselves out during this section, an audio montage of one character’s statements made throughout the picture unnecessary, lessening the emotional impact of the discovery the former FBI star has spent over a decade being preoccupied with uncovering. There is still awe, the horror very much felt, just not nearly as fully and as intimately I thought was theoretically possible, the director apparently too un-

sure the audience would have been able to put together the final puzzle pieces without a little extra over-the-top input on his part.

If Ray does not show the same steady hand he showcased on his first two directorial outings (Shattered Glass and Breach) that isn’t to say he doesn’t still put forth a notable effort. For the majority of the film, he handles the dual timelines and past/present aspects of the narrative with dexterous skill. He weaves back and forth between 2002 and 2015 confidently, and not once did I feel like I was lost trying to gauge what was happening when. He also does a nice job of making it an honest-to-goodness guessing game as to whether or not the new man Kasten has put into the spotlight as Caroline’s murderer is the one we actually know did the crime 13 years prior.

Secret in Their Eyes will not electrify

viewers who’ve seen the Argentinian original with near the same magnitude. Ray doesn’t shake things up, doesn’t choose to go in a new direction, more or less doing nothing more than attempt to tell the same story but with an Americanized bent. But thanks to the efforts of the cast, especially the central trio, an unbelievably good Roberts most of all, and a smart, intelligentlyconstructed script that treats its audience with a great deal of respect, I found that this remake worthwhile. While not a classic, there’s no law that says it had to be, and as cryptic, labyrinthine thrillers revolving around family, obsession and justice are concerned, this remake was a welcome punch to the gut I couldn’t help but be moderately impressed by.
