Four of the main actors (Idina Menzel, LaChanze, James Snyder, and Anthony Rapp) are recreating their roles (for a limited time – see *NOTE below) on the First National Tour. Dealing with choices, fate and “the road we didn’t take,” the musical is

thought provoking and intelligent as well as having good lyrics and music.

The storyline takes place in NYC in “the recent past” and deals with choices that we make, and don’t make, and how either can affect us in the long run of our lives. Elizabeth (Idina Menzel) has moved back to New York City after her divorce from a husband in Arizona. Two friends meet her in the park. Kate (LaChanze) lives across the hall and believes in living life to the fullest with every moment, with the first thing being nicknaming her new friend, “Liz.” Lucas (Anthony Rapp) is a long-time see if/then page 5

Artistic Director Dennis Coleman prepares for his final holiday concert at Benaroya Hall Nov. 28 - Dec. 21 Seattle Men’s Chorus (SMC) is thrilled to announce the addition of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”’s Tituss Burgess to this season’s first two holiday concerts.

For “Home for the Holidays,” artistic director Dennis Coleman is pulling out all his “naughty and nice” song favorites and preparing for his final holiday season conducting the Chorus. Featured songs include SMC’s beloved “Ave Maria” and “Silent

Night,” as well as new tunes such as “Text Me Merry Christmas.” The addition of Tituss Burgess to the first two Seattle concerts, on November 28th and 29th, will add an extra dash of fairy dust to this treasured yuletide tradition. Celebrating 41 Years!

Tituss Burgess interviews next week with SGN, ahead of Seattle Men’s Chorus concerts

We might not get any snow this winter in Seattle, but we will get Tituss Burgess.

The Emmy-nominated star of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is scheduled to perform with the Seattle Men’s Chorus on November 28 and 29 for the first two “Home for the Holidays” seasonal concerts. Featured musical selections are said to be standard favorites like “Ave Maria” and “Silent Night,” plus modern entries, such as “Text Me Merry Christmas.”

Burgess is no stranger to song and dance, the openly Gay entertainer has appeared in four Broadway musicals – Good Vibrations, Jersey Boys, The Little Mermaid, and Guys and Dolls. To that list add regional theater productions The Wiz, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Into the Woods.

He’s now expanded to the big screen, soon to be heard in The Angry Birds Movie, a much-anticipated feature film adaptation of the popular video game that bows to audiences next spring. :Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is currently filming its sophomore season in New York City with new episodes airing on Netflix in the first half of 2016.

In his very first interview with Seattle Gay News, scheduled to print next Friday, November 13, Burgess tackles Matt Damon’s recent remarks suggesting Gay actors stay in the closet. He also discusses his plans for the upcoming holidays, his favorite music, major influences, and what comes to mind when he hears the word “Seattle.” The Georgia-born actor-singer was on a short break from shooting scenes of his TV show when he called the SGN from New York, chatting for about 15 minutes before he had to go back to work.

His shift to television started in Tina Fey’s Emmy-winning, NBC series, “30 Rock,” in the role of “D’Fwan,” Sherri Shepherd’s character’s hairdresser and cohort. He became a fan-favorite and reteamed with Fey for her follow-up comedy series, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

This wildly popular Netflix series was recently nominated for an Emmy as “Best Comedy Series.” Burgess stars as Kimmy’s scene-stealing roommate Titus Andromedon; for this role he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Emmy, received the Best Actor award at the 2015 Webby Awards, and was nominated for a 2015 Critics’ Choice TV Award in the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category.

Burgess’ other television credits include “A Gifted Man,” “Blue Bloods” and “Royal Pains.” Burgess released a solo album titled Comfortable in 2012, and has toured to performance venues across the globe.

The white-on-white set by Catherine Cornell gets colorized by lights (designed by Robert J. Aguilar) and is suggestive rather than representative. So, your imagination really gets a work-out.

Drummond plays Alex, Alex’s boyfriend Barry, a Jewish screenwriter whose feelings about Babs are generally negative due to a bit of jealousy of her fame and accomplishment, and, of course, Barbra herself. His portrayal of Barbra is not an imitation, it’s a slightly awkward channeling, with contorted body, that you kind of have to get used to – but you do.

Director David Bennett has helped get the rhythm down to perfect timing. Every joke lands exactly as it should, every step matches the pattern laid by Tolins. This is a

Until, however, he gets a call, in between looking for acting gigs, to work for a rich person living in Malibu… and takes on one of the strangest hourly jobs a person might have: working in Barbra Streisand’s basement!

This is the set up for this charming show full of belly laughs and gently poking into financial inequity and our obsession with celebrity. At the start of the show, Scott Drummond, the New York-based actor getting a work out in this complex piece

by Jonathan Tolins, tells us that we need to remember that none of this actually happened. It’s all the imagination of the playwright.

What is true is that Ms. Streisand wrote a coffee table book about her obsession with interior design. It’s called “My Passion for Design,” and is full of her own pictures of her estate in Malibu where she created several buildings, like a mill, a barn, a guest house and a main house on extensive grounds with ponds and gardens. She has so many collectibles that she wanted to display properly that she created a “mall” in the basement full of individual shops, like a doll shop and a clothing store with some of her old costumes in it.

Drummond explains that Tolins wondered about what it would be like to work down there in the not-real shops while waiting for the Diva to visit her stuff. He informs us that Tolins has never met her and all of the portrayal of her is fictional, but based on her book.

difficult show to get right. You can hear that from the script. But this one gets it so very, very right.

The relationship between the celebrity and the can’t-get-work actor is complex, sweet, and awkward. He’s unsure of when he gets overtime; she needs someone to talk to, but bristles at boiling down a friendship into dollars and cents. You know it’s got to end somehow, but how?

Well, you won’t know till the very last minute of the piece. So sit back and enjoy and laugh.

continued from cover friend from college. He is a protestor for fair housing and tries to persuade “Beth” to come to a meeting with him instead of hanging out in the park with Kate. It is here that the two stories split into two different and simultaneous tales.

IF Liz had gone with Kate, THEN what happened with Lucas would have never occurred to Beth, and vice versa. After running into each other (by chance) three times, Liz accepts a date with a handsome soldier named Josh (James Snyder), home after his second tour of duty. The two fall in love and start a family. Beth answers a fortuitous phone call and accepts a job with the city as a planner for Urban Development. As Beth becomes very successful in her career, she laments the sacrifices made involving relationships and families.

Audiences need not worry; the storyline isn’t nearly as complicated as it sounds.

The separation between “Liz” and “Beth” is defined very well, and it is easy to distinguish one from the other. Although the other characters still interact with “Liz” and

young man, flouting convention and gossip.

But where were the Gays and Lesbians?

There must not have been any. At least until Oscar Wilde. He was the first, right?

Not according to a spanking new play by local thespian Caitlin Gilman. My Dear Miss Chancellor dives deep into hidden Lesbian culture in the London social scene.

In her vision, Lesbians daringly gather in secret societies, where they know each other and keep each other’s secrets. Where, if found out, they are certain to be drummed out of fashionable society and never heard from again.

“Beth,” the different name used for each set of circumstances (and a pair of glasses) smoothly transitions the character from one storyline to the other. Both storylines have their pros and cons for Elizabeth’s life (although one path is decidedly more biasedly presented) and are shone with accurate portrayals and interactions.

The four main leads are all reprising the roles they originally created during the Broadway run. It is without a doubt that Idina Menzel’s voice is powerful and that she delivers the strength that is needed for the songs in this show. Her stage presence allows the audience to accept her as either Liz or Beth, Ms. Menzel distinguishingly separating the two personalities. It is her name above the title, and the audience reminds us of that by stopping the show (with applause and cheers for several minutes) the moment she appears, and before she has a chance to demonstrate any of her talents. Josh, played

by James Snyder, does well as the love-ofLiz’s-life. His voice is strong and clear. His handsome stage presence is notable, and he brings an endearing charm to the character. Anthony Rapp plays Beth’s friend

Set in 1848, this whip-smart and fun script focuses on the coming out party of 17-year-old Janet Chancellor (Sophia Franzella) who is expected to almost-instantly find and marry an eligible young man. Her ability to survive, financially, and leave her family’s home to be independent, are all based on her marriage to a landed gentleman of means.

But Janet has a secret. She’s not like other girls and doesn’t have the same feelings as other debutantes. That becomes clear shortly after she meets another single woman, Hazel McGovern (Tracy Leigh), who has not yet found a mate, even after nine years of society galas.

Hazel offers friendship and more. She starts by introducing Janet to a secret: a fencing club for Lesbians where they practice a forbidden art. But Janet is not aware that Hazel’s spurned lover, Constance Shepard (Jasmine Joshua), is a member, and is planning revenge on her cold-hearted former lover!

There is a bit of narration to the audience by ladies maid Mary Ann (Hannah Schnabel, as a spicy, saucy Scots Lesbian) and a lot of scene changing accompanied by a live cello (Ian Johnston) with music composed by Tracy Hagen. The elegant, yet simple set (by Chris M. Roberson) allows columns to be inserted and removed quickly to open up or close up the stage for balls or fencing or bedrooms.

The cast is huge and everyone does a

great job, even those playing servants. Director Elizabeth Hershly makes sure the servant set-changers move with attitude.

They are fun to watch as they fuss over the placement of props and bedding, just so.

Franzella steals the attention every moment she’s on stage (which is a lot)!

Her awkward-teenager is too adorable for words. Schnabel is fun in her small role, as mentioned, and Alysha Curry and Sarah Winsor have very fun moments, as well.

I love me some Tracy Leigh and am glad to see her on stage, but I have to say that she is pretty far away from the 26-year-old she is supposed to play. She does do a great job in the role. I also wish that she might have been asked to put stage cover-up on her multiple tattoos on her arms and back.

They are so period inappropriate.

While I keep mentioning “fun,” and there are many amusing moments, there is a significant dramatic ending. And the company pulls off the switch rather well.

This is a sophisticated and fulfilling offering from Annex Theatre. It’s an evening certain to please.

The audience roots for this underdog easily thanks to Rapp’s skills at playing “lovable geek,” and his voice is well suited for the songs.

Its representation of modern life and powerful without a doubt. The charac- (and lifestyles) are shown fairly and preter of Kate is energetic and vivacious, and sented well. Men in Dance 2015 Choreographer’s Showcase was standing room only

been any group of jolly fellows anywhere) and the title (were any hearts actually hard?) this dance had so many clever moves and expertly organized combinations of dancers that it grew on me more and more, until by the end I loved it and stopped worrying about what it all meant. I think Dylan Ward is a very talented dance-and-sound maker and I’ll be looking forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

by Sharon Cumberland SGN A&E Writer “MEN IN DANCE – 2015 ADJUDICATED CHOREOGRAPHER’S SHOWCASE” VELOCITY DANCE CENTER October 16 & 17 Men in Dance is the Seattle organization that produces a biannual festival exclusively for male dancers. It not only encourages men and boys to enter this female-heavy field, but it gives both men and women choreographers a chance to meet the challenge of creating works that make sense when guys are the only ones in the spotlight. If you’ve ever seen “Men in Dance” – last year was its tenth anniversary – then you’ll know why the dance community is delighted that they’ve instituted an interim event between festivals so that we don’t have to wait until next year to see the wonderfully imaginative works this group inspires.

On October 16th I joined a noisy, excited, standing-room-only crowd to see the five dances in contention for inclusion in next year’s main festival. This was an adjudicated showcase – three dance professionals were there to judge the work and to decide on a winner, and the audience was invited to write comments on color-coded paper to give to each choreographer. It was a long evening that included six dances, an intermission, and a panel discussion among judges Vanessa DeWolf, Lodi McClellan, and Christian Swenson, as well as questions for each choreographer. Just about everyone stayed to the end – a measure of how intriguing these new dances were. I particularly enjoyed hearing what the judges had to say, and found myself agreeing with most of their comments and learning some new angles of observation. I’ll review these in order of my preference – favorites first.

The Twins & Misfit – Choreography by Gierre J. Godley If I had a vote on the winner of the evening it would be The Twins & Misfit – a witty and penetrating dance performed by choreographer Gierre J. Godly and Justin Robert Thomas Smith – two black guys – and Aaron McGloin, a skinny, geeky white guy. At first we see one “twin” sprawled on the floor getting poked into motion by the other to the rhythmic hand-claps of Gil Scott-Heron’s “New York is Killing Me.” The two men dance side-by-side in simultaneous patterns and variations that convey the dilemma of the song – misplaced in the big city, needing to get back home to Tennessee, where your people are and where things make sense.

If the dance had stopped there it would have been satisfying, but it got complicated when a skinny Microsoftie/Amazonian white guy in a tie comes out alone to perform a terrific solo that makes it clear, from

his constrained and increasingly desperate gestures, that New York is killing him, too. Though he is dancing to the mesmerizing strains of Enzio Bosso we can see that his story is the same – for all his apparent advantages, the man is out of sync, alone, needy. This, too, would have been enough – two different races, moods, forms of expression, but the same dilemma.

Yet Godley takes us further, bringing the twins back onstage in a hilarious mincing dance where they prance around arm in arm with their noses in the air as the white guy tries to get them to see him. He throws himself in their path but they step over him; he waves his arms but they ignore him. He is invisible to the twins, just as the twins, historically, are invisible to “New York” –

five automatons who move in a Tron-like network as they are deployed on an array of mechanical tasks. You know you’re inside a game or a computer as you watch the wide range of movements possible as combinations of dancers develop on this very restricted lattice of invisible lines. Rodriguez’ work is my second choice for the honor of appearing in the “Men in Dance” festival next year because the level of invention she achieves from what is essentially one idea mimics the irony of the computer, which can display any marvel and perform any task using the simple lingo of zero-one.

all the privileged people with their cultural capital and their blindness. This was a brilliant choice of music that unfolded an everdeeper sequence of ideas for the viewer.

Quite the best work of the evening and worthy to take a place in the “Men in Dance: Against the Grain Festival” in 2016.

by Peter de Grasse in collaboration with Raffaele Exiana The choreographer and his collaborator danced this meditation on the tension between couples, represented by distinctively different dance styles – one man dancing in Memphis Jookin-type movement and the other in classical ballet. I admired the skill of their dancing and the passionate exploration of the relationship as they strove to alter their styles and find common ground.

Nevertheless, I thought the title of the work was disingenuous since dancing is a code – if not it has no meaning, and this dance was packed with meaning. The problem with watching a pair work through a relationship, however, is that while you know their issues are true, and even universal, something needs to make us care as if it were our own relationship. This dance seemed somewhat private, as though we were window-peepers instead of viewers relating to a version of our own relationships. I hope in another revision the viewer will be admitted more into this story.

Murmuration – Choreography by Jamie Karlovich Hey, man, this was so cool – four cute guys in cool suits showing some very smooth moves to Dave Brubeck’s “Unsquare Dance.” These guys were the opposite of square – they were hot, they were clever, they did an arm dance that was very witty. I didn’t know who they were, what they were doing there, or what they were communicating other than that they were very cool. Jamie Karlovich has got a fertile mind for movement and deploys her forces well (though the slow start with tiny gestures was a little slow off the mark for me).

I like the title, though I don’t know what it means. It may be me, but I am really into meaning. I can look at cute, cool guys doing cool-looking things all day, but in the end I need for it to mean something. This isn’t to say Murmuration didn’t mean anything – it just didn’t communicate very much to me.

Karlovich is clearly gifted and her dancers were great to watch. Next time, if I may be so bold, give us some subtext – or at least share it with us.

Directed by Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth and featuring Grace Carmack, Emily Pike, Jenn Ruzumna, Clayton Michael, Julian Garcia, Chris Crawford, and Noelle Mestres, Careful Girls is the ninth in a series of workshop productions of new plays by local playwrights produced by Parley in 2015. Careful Girls will be presented at West of Lenin (203 N. 36th St.). Admission is pay-what-you-will.

In Careful Girls, high school juniors Liza and Taryn have been best friends since they were twelve, and the intrepid Taryn’s gotten used to leading the way for the cautious Liza. But when they both start dating older boys, Liza says she’s going way too far. Soon, Taryn’s reputation comes under fire at school. Will Liza stick by her? Will her parents?

Caitlin Coey attended the acting program at Cornish College of the Arts and graduated from Antioch University Seattle with a B.A in Arts and Literature. While at Antioch she studied Theater of the Op-

pressed with Marc Wenblatt, and had the honor of being the assistant editor for the literary magazine Knock. A staged reading of her first play, The Language of this World, went up at West of Lenin in September 2014. She is a proud member of Parley, and has studied playwriting with Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth since 2012.

Parley, a new home for playwrights in Seattle, was created in 2014 by Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth, who teaches playwriting at Freehold Theatre Lab/Studio.

Parley is a hybrid writing workshop and production entity that meets weekly. While

many theater organizations claim to champion new work, Parley embodies this ideal in deed as well as name.

Parley invests deeply in its associate playwrights and sustains its support of them over months and years: from the false starts and tender beginnings of a scene to the completed manuscript and on through casting, rehearsal, revision, production, and beyond. Parley has produced thirteen world premieres since its 2014 inaugural season.

Superbly acted Truth never finds thematic balance

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer TRUTH Now playing On September 9, 2004 CBS News aired a story on “60 Minutes II” that President George W. Bush, then running against Senator John Kerry for a second term as president, did not do his duty in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. The story was produced by Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett), who broke the Abu Ghraib prison scandal story and was held in high regard by her compatriots and peers, and was reported by veteran Dan Rather (Robert Redford), an industry icon who had been on-air at CBS for over 40 years. The broadcast was a huge success for the network and for those who researched it, nailing down a story many journalists had been circling around and trying to confirm since G. W. Bush’s initial run for the Presidency back in 2000.

Then the unthinkable happened. The key component of the story, a series of official military papers nicknamed “The Killian Documents” after Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian, the deceased former commanding officer of the 111th Fighter Intercept Squadron in which the President served, were not obtained as originally stated. Turns out, former Texas Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Bill Burkett (Stacey Keach) received these copies from an unnamed whistleblower, his convoluted tale as to how they came to him different than what he stated to Mapes months prior. Next thing the reporters know they’re the ones under the microscope, CBS News president Andrew Heyward (Bruce Greenwood) forcing Rather to apologize for the story on-air while also convening an independent investigative panel to figure out what went wrong with the story and why.

It’s hard to know exactly where to stand as far as Truth is concerned. Adapted by writer/director James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) from Mapes’ best-selling memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power, the basic thesis that the movie puts forth, that a story was deconstructed not because it was wrong but because it wasn’t vetted as thoroughly as it should have been, that corporate interests trumped journalist ones, that the Fourth Estate was left out in the cold to fend for

itself, is hard to disagree with. But it’s just as reasonable to state that Mapes and her team did make a huge mistake, that in their push to get the story out there (that urgency, it should also be noted, was also fueled by corporate interests) they did not confirm their sources like they should have. They screwed up, and even if the core of what they’re saying was correct, there was so much doubt as to the validity of the supposed “proof” that truth seemed like a lie and fact suddenly had the appearance of fiction, a thing supporters of G.W. Bush jumped on moments after the broadcast first aired.

I get it. Mapes, Rather and the rest were unjustly pilloried and smeared. Same time, they did make mistakes and they didn’t get everything right. As such, they do deserve to take some responsibility for what happened. Had they dotted their I’s and crossed their T’s the story would have stayed on Bush’s National Guard service and not faded into obscurity thanks to arguments about typefaces, superscripts and text margins. Vanderbilt is more concerned with exonerating Mapes and her team than he is in engaging in a discussion as to the rights, wrongs and the multifarious in-betweens this story brought into the light, as such “truth” seems to be the last thing on his film’s mind.

Yet Blanchett is glorious, giving another sensational performance ranking up there with some of the best of her Oscar-winning career. There is a complexity to her depiction of Mapes, the actress mining territories and going places Vanderbilt’s script barely only hints at let alone chooses to examine in exacting detail. Her reactions to Burkett’s duplicity, the way her story is twisted into insignificance, how she is attacked for doing her job, as if she was some hack with an axe to grind and not a journalist who’s proven herself on stories running the liberal/conservative spectrum, Blanchett balances all of this with magnificent refinement.

Most of all, though, the film solidifies the friendship between Mapes and Rather with delicate perspicacity. The way they communicate one to the other so often with a glance and without the need for words, it’s all rather wonderful. There’s a great scene, one that’s sadly been utilized far too much in promos for the motion picture, of the two of them talking together one late night after the story has blown up in their faces and CBS has decided to wash their hands of it.

Not only are Blanchett and Redford superb, the scene goes for a complex dexterity in regards to the overarching themes, adding a maturity to the proceedings I felt was sadly lacking the majority of the time.

I don’t disagree with what Vanderbilt wants to say. His points about the corporatization of network news, the reticence on the part of national media outlets to push things too far so as not to displease stockholders and put in jeopardy the bottom line, that all comes through loud and clear.

As valid and as potent as this observation might be, it is also far from new. As valid and as potent as this observation might be, it is also far from new. Vanderbilt turns the volume up to 11 yet doesn’t say much that’s revelatory, a facet made even more annoying now that we’re in the middle of a new presidential contest and deserve to hear arguments far more nuanced than this.

Vanderbilt seems so willing to give the reporters a pass for not digging as deeply as they should have that any discussion that mistakes were made is so quickly glossed over it’s almost a wonder it’s even dealt with at all. Journalism isn’t above its own sort of reproach when stories are not vetted as they should be, and even if the core is correct and the conclusions are factual, few are going to care if they can pick apart the puzzle pieces that supposedly lead there.

Truth, as much as I agree with many of its contentions, fails to hold itself to the same level of scrutiny as it does those going after Mapes and Rather, and as such never feels as authentic as it should have.

All-star Burnt doesn’t quite cook

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer BURNT Now playing Chef Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) was once the toast of Paris, receiving two Michelin stars for his inventive culinary creations. But he blew it, indulging in sex, drugs and booze to such an extent he terrorized his coworkers, destroyed friendships and ruined the restaurant his closest ally Tony (Daniel Brühl) sunk his own money into trying to make it a success. Adam destroyed everything, running back to the United States in a quest to kick his addictions, forcing himself into seclusion, shucking a million oysters at a faceless New Orleans eatery as a form of penance for all his past sins.

Now he’s back, heading to London to reunite with Tony in order to convince him to turn over his new restaurant to him. Assembling a crackerjack team, including his former sous chef Michel (Omar Sy) whom he royally did a number on in Paris but desperately wants to make amends with, Adam is ready to go after his third Michelin star, this time sober. Yet the world of high-end cuisine has changed in the years he was gone, and this world-renowned chef is going to have to adapt with the times or face ruination. He finds inspiration in up-andcoming sensation Helene (Sienna Miller),

the pair finding a symbiotic way to work with one another that could lead both to the doorstep of culinary preeminence.

On a number of levels Burnt is just fine.

I like the fact that veteran Steven Knight’s (Locke, Eastern Promises) script drops the viewer right in the middle of Adam’s story, refusing to spend a great deal of time on the recovering addict’s backstory, choosing only to focus on what he is attempting to do in the here and now. He also seems to have a solid grasp of this international world of culinary excellence, treating the respective chefs shooting for Michelin magnificence almost as if they were heavyweight boxers duking it out in the ring. It gives the film an energetic feel that’s all-encompassing, making it exceedingly easy to watch start to finish.

While that’s all well and good, there’s still no hiding that not a lot happens here that doesn’t follow a somewhat tired playbook. It is never in doubt where any of this is going to end up. There is no question as to how Adam and Helene’s relationship is going to evolve. There are no shocks as to what kind of obstacles will need to be overcome in order for the chef to find the sort of redemption he is aiming for. Sure, some of the individual moments in and of themselves might be a little out in left field or come from a direction that’s not entirely anticipated, but they are sadly few and far between, the actual outcome never in doubt at any time.

What’s really crazy is just how nonchalant much of this is, how prim and proper.

Heck, if you were to cut out all the four-letter words that Adam is prone to screaming and shouting, it’s very easy to imagine the film premiering on PBS right after “Downton Abbey,” the stiff-upper-lip Britishness of it all feeling vaguely made-for-TV. John Wells directs with the same basic, steadily even-keeled hand he brought to films like August: Osage County and The Company Men, not to mention television favorites like “E.R.” and “The West Wing,” and that’s perfectly fine. But, just as importantly, it’s nothing a heck of a lot better than that either, and as solid as much of this is, it’s just as equally difficult to get excited about any part of the story being told as well.

It does not help that, as well-constructed as much of the central stuff revolving around Adam, Helena and, to a lesser extent, Tony might be, a lot of the peripheral happenings aren’t nearly as strong or as interesting as needed in order for the film to make a deeper, more long-lasting impression. A subplot involving a rival chef played by Matthew Rhys begins promisingly enough before lapsing into unnecessary cliché, while central dynamics involving Michel don’t work near as well as one hopes they would have. Wasted entirely are Emma Thompson and Uma Thurman, both showing up in thankless roles allowing them little room to maneuver, making their

appearances more frustrating as to their misuse instead of anything even slightly positive.

But Cooper is spectacular, delivering another superlative performance that’s every bit as nuanced and as complex as his Oscar-nominated turns in Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and American Sniper. Better, both Miller and Brühl are up to the challenge of matching him step-forstep, the two actors taking what could have been relatively stock, rudimentary characters and giving them a depth, nuance and complexity I found fascinating. Even Sy, as thinly constructed as his sous chef Michel might be, makes the most of every opportunity granted him by Knight and Wells, delivering on the promise showcased in The Intouchables with impressive aplomb.

All of which makes Burnt an intriguing misfire that’s impossible to dislike yet difficult to fully embrace. I appreciate what Knight and Wells are attempting, like how they desire to tell a story from the middle in, not wasting a lot of time recounting events we don’t need to know a lot about.

But the basics, the core of what is transpiring? It’s all too familiar, too rudimentary, and while the kitchen they’re working in is top-of-the-line, the meal they ultimately prepare isn’t that much better than a Denny’s breakfast left under the heat lamps a few minutes too many.

Brilliantly brittle Room an intimately emotional wonder

As he does every morning, he says hello to Room, the 10-by-10-foot space he and Ma (Brie Larson) call home. He says hello to the sink. He says hello to the television. He says hello to the skylight. He says hello to the snake made out of eggshells he and Ma have spent countless hours crafting.

Jack loves Room. It is the only world he has ever known. It is, as far as his limited base of knowledge is concerned, all that exists in the known universe.

But Ma thinks her son is ready to learn otherwise. The world is more than the sink.

It is more than the television set. It is more than the small little skylight allowing sun-

shine to enter Room during the day. It is even more than that snake made out of eggshells, the land outside of the locked door the mysterious Old Nick (Sean Bridgers) uses to come and go every night a heck of a little brighter, bolder and bigger than anything Jack can imagine.

For those familiar with screenwriter Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel Room, the secrets Ma has gone out of her way to shield Jack from will not come as a gigantic surprise. For anyone who has watched the film’s trailer or has looked at the cast list and seen the likes of Joan Allen and William H. Macy registered as supporting players, it’s doubtful they’ll be particularly shocked by the central revelation awaiting the preschool-aged protagonist.

Even so, Donoghue’s adaptation is a startling, gut-wrenching affair, she and director Lenny Abrahamson (Frank) bringing this remarkable story to life with warmth, hu-

manity, humor and intelligence.

Feeling in many ways as if it had been ripped from headlines just yesterday, Jack and Ma’s odyssey to freedom and individuality is riveting from the start. Seen almost entirely through the eyes of the bright-eyed 5-year-old, the childlike way in which Donoghue and Abrahamson manage to navigate through so many hard-edged, complicatedly adult situations and emotions is astonishing. Yet, the pair do this without talking down to the audience, no belittling, no assuming they can’t think for themselves and that they’ll be unable to figure out all the components of this tale without too much in the way of unnecessary embellishments on their part. The consistency in tone is something special, allowing the film to connect in a way that caught me entirely by surprise.

Larson, denied an Academy Award nomination for her spellbinding performance in Short Term 12, finding ways to enliven pictures as diverse as 21 Jump Street, The Spectacular Now, Don Juan and this summer’s Amy Schumer hit Trainwreck, is mesmerizing, inhabiting Ma so fully it’s impossible to imagine anyone else in the part. Much like the filmmakers, she’s forced to walk a pretty thin tightrope, having to explain things in a way Jack can understand, but also so that there is a sense of urgency he cannot ignore as it pertains to what’s she’s asking him to do.

More than that, though, Larson has to also explore Ma’s own internal injuries, make her decisions as they concern Jack, as well as the menacing Old Nick, feel pure, entirely authentic. She has to ride an unimaginable emotional rollercoaster, making us believe that this devoted mother could still be as stranded in her own form of childhood thanks to the traumas she has

been forced for over half-a-decade to endure. It’s a seemingly impossible task and yet Larson makes it look effortless, a late moment between her and Wendy Crewson (her character best left for viewers to learn about on their own) slamming my heart up against the wall as Ma is forced to examine her choices with callous disregard to the damage being done to her.

I’m being purposefully vague about a great deal of what happens, mainly because I can’t help but hope that intrigued viewers get the opportunity to discover what Donoghue and Abrahamson have in store for them without too many of the twists and turns spoiled before they enter into the theatre. Just know that Allen is extraordinary, and it feels like it’s been ages since this three-time Oscar-nominee has been given a role quite this wonderful. There is also some sublime work from young Tremblay, a sequence with him, a rolled up rug and a bumpy ride into the unknown so undeniably thrilling I almost couldn’t believe what it was I was witnessing.

There’s some stuff involving Macy’s character that doesn’t work particularly well, and there are a few beats where the filmmakers hit the viewer a little too hard over the head, amplifying little moments or pointing out some of their thematic observations that were already clear enough and didn’t require additional augmenting. But Abrahamson’s direction is just so strong and Donoghue’s script so refreshingly honest it’s hard to get too angry about little things that don’t rise to the same level of near-perfection the majority ascends to.

Ultimately, Room is a lithe, deeply moving wonder that builds to a miraculous coda, the hope pulsating through my soul a feeling of true bliss unlike any I’ve felt watching a movie this entire year.

written by Elizabeth Irwin. I have sometimes cringed at the portrayals of characters with Latin background. Fortunately, that is not the case in this production.

In My Mañana Comes, three young bussers of Mexican heritage and one who is African-American work in an upscale restaurant kitchen. It portrays their hopes, dreams, and harsh realities. I do not see the characters as “kitchen help” or “people of color” (a term, by the way, that I revile).

Instead, I see them as they are: four guys working very hard to get the food out from the back of house at this very busy chic restaurant. While working their shifts, their conversations cover the issues of immigration, wage theft, and their personal struggles.

The four men fill the stage with masculine angst. Joshua Chessin-Yudin brings an inimitable optimistic joviality to the stage as Whalid. Peter, played by Tyler Trerise, mines his hesitating ambitions to powerful effect. Santino Garcia brings Jorge alive with his hopeful emotions. Finally, young Pepe, played by Chris Rodriguez brings out his character’s naïve impetuous personal-

My Mañana Comes can begin this conversation.

I must applaud ArtsWest for not giving this production an ethnic-centric showcase marketing campaign. Instead they focused on its beauty, acting talent, lighting and stage design, and costumes that showed respect for the material and for theater. From my experience, this is a fine achievement for the local theater scene.

Later on this season, ArtsWest is presenting another stripe of the American Dream with Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. Biff and Happy could just as well be in this kitchen working. It will be interesting to see this connection in the daylight of our current times.

Spectre takes 007 on a forgettable journey

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer SPECTRE Now playing Sent on a mission of death by a message from the grave from his former boss (Judi Dench), James Bond (Daniel Craig) is currently in Mexico City giving his license to kill a workout. The current M (Ralph Fiennes) is not pleased by his best agent’s destructive, unauthorized antics, ordering Q (Ben Whishaw) and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) to keep tabs on him whether 007 wants them to or not. Thing is, they trust Bond, so when he again flies the coop to attend a funeral, saving the life of the grieving wife (Monica Bellucci) of the man he killed in the process, they both stand idly by letting him go on his merry way.

Good thing, too, because the secret agent has uncovered a conspiracy more far-reaching and unpleasant than anything anyone back at the home office could have imagined possible. Thanks to help from old nemesis Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), promising to keep the man’s only daughter Madeleine (Léa Seydoux) safe from harm in exchange for information, Bond is led into the beating, bloody heart of a massive conspiracy. Yet, even he is unprepared for what he discovers there, the man in charge someone he is intimately familiar with, a man he, along with everyone in the British government, all thought was dead.

Spectre brings the Daniel Craig era James Bond stories full circle, tying up loose ends left behind after the events of Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, while also introducing the quintessential villainous organization author Ian Fleming’s superspy has been battling right from the very beginning. It’s both a culmination of a story begun nine years ago as well as an origin tale potentially setting the course for the future, returning director Sam Mendes trying to thread a tiny needle as he pays homage to the past while keeping things anchored in the present.

There have been a number of great James Bond movies, each of the actors (Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan) who have played the iconic character all having at least one strong outing to their credit. There have also been a number of memorably bad outings for 007, Moonraker, A View to a Kill and Die Another Day all coming to mind as far as that goes. But there has never been a forgettable Bond flick, one that evaporates from memory the moment it comes to an end, a major plus for a series of films that’s been running strong since Dr. No premiered in 1962.

Until now. Even with two-time Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz as the central baddie, even with an opening sequence set during the Day of the Dead featuring an absolutely flabbergasting tracking shot helmed by cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema (Nebraska), it’s astonishing how little of interest actually takes place. Veteran Bond screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (The World is Not Enough onward), working with newcomer Jez Butterworth (Black Mass) and fellow Skyfall returnee John Logan, have constructed the most freeze-dried and by-thenumbers 007 outing yet, the stuff transpiring so uninspiring it’s almost impressive.

Not that the components for a solid escapade are not present. Not only is Waltz just fine in his rather mysterious role as the nefarious instigator of all Bond’s misery, Dave Bautista is a magnetic force of thuggish nature out to stop 007 from putting the pieces of this enigmatic puzzle together as brutally and as violently as he can. Craig and Bellucci have magnificent chemistry, their brief time together a smoldering inferno of intimacy and understanding that’s positively inspirational. Additionally, while silly as all get-out, Mendes stages a spectacular set piece involving a fleet of Land Rovers and a twin engine airplane dueling across a snow-covered mountainside that’s close to out of this world.

But who cares? The script plays like a series of “Bond Greatest Hits” more than

it does anything original, inorganically fitting in various plot machinations more because they need to exist in order for the film’s ultimate reveal to be a reality than they do to propel the main character along on his journey of self-discovery. While I appreciate the way the writers manage to work in references to the other three Craig films, they don’t do so in ways that are authentic or honest. More, they also cram in S.P.E.C.T.R.E. references going back to Dr. No going all the way through to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and while there is minor fun in spotting them all there’s no real narrative reason for the majority to exist.

Even one of the film’s best fight sequences, an all-out brawl between Craig and Bautista on a speeding train, is lifted almost wholesale from From Russia with Love, and as nicely orchestrated and staged as it might be, the whole moment feels shoehorned into the proceedings all so the two stars can ape Sean Connery and Robert Shaw. It’s endemic of the movie as a whole, little of it having an identity it could call unique or its own, and after a while I just felt a little worn down by it all to the point I almost stopped caring about anything that was happening.

Saying all of this does break my heart.

I was raised on James Bond. I know him inside and out. I’m one of the few people I know who can watch the great Bond films as many times as I do the terrible ones. I will proudly proclaim From Russia with Love one of the greatest motion pictures of all-time while at the same time singing the praises of supposedly “lesser” 007s Lazenby and Dalton until the cows come home. I adore this character, his world and his adventures no matter which iteration we are discussing, and it’s safe to say my parents introducing him to me (including Fleming’s books, which I devoured voraciously) is something I thank my lucky stars for regularly.

But Spectre? As terrific as it all looks, as expertly crafted as it might be, Spectre just isn’t all that good a movie, and while it brings signature events and characters back into the Bond fold much better than most other reboots of classic serials can say the same about accomplishing (i.e. Star Trek Into Darkness), as positives go this is a minor one. The movie is a tired retread that offers little new or original, taking 007 to the one place he’s arguably never been before: irrelevance.
