Billy Joel to perform at Safeco Field this spring

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer If you heard a rumor that Billy Joel is coming to town, you may be right. It’s not a fantasy.

Okay, so I just named two song titles in as many sentences by Joel, but it’s not a difficult thing to do considering he released hit after hit after hit for over five decades, and he’s still going strong. The Piano Man announced a special appearance in Seattle this spring, performing his first-ever concert at the baseball stadium, Safeco Field, on May 20. The announcement was made live at the SoDo sports venue on January 27 to reporters by Kevin Mather, President of the Seattle Mariners, principal residents of Safeco Field.

This is only the third live music event to be staged at the baseball field, preceded by Paul McCartney in 2013 and Beyonce/Jay Z in 2014. Although the stadium has a capacity of just over 54,000, the Joel concert is expected to accommodate about 35,000, according to Mather, who also stated during the press conference that the Emerald City show is one of only two scheduled for

the West Coast on the singer-songwriter’s brief tour; San Diego is the other.

Joel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and received the equally prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in 2013, in addition to earning 6 Grammy Awards and 33 Top 40 singles in his standout career. His two-disc compilation recording, Greatest Hits Volume I and II, is tied with Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV on the best-sell-

Judy Collins has sold out all performances of her three-night residence at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley. The acclaimed singer-songwriter, who has released over 50 albums in her long career since debuting in 1961, sold out the first two shows on March 7 and 8 in 48 hours and sold out the third concert on March 9 in 48 hours as well.

Consider yourself fortunate if you have tickets to either of these Jazz Alley performances, as the famed folk artist and social activist is likely to entertain crowds with such classics as “Send in the Clowns” and her cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now.” Collins was born in Seattle.

Grease is indeed the word. The presentation of Grease Live last weekend on Fox was not only impressively done, it also drew an audience of over 12 million people in the U.S., the highest-rated live musical since The Sound of Music in 2013. The televised production featured Julianne Hough as Sandy, Aaron Tveit as Danny, Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy, Mario Lopez as Fontaine and himself, Ana Gasteyer as Principal McGee and Joe Jonas as Johnny Casino. In case you missed it, Grease Live is streaming now on Hulu.

Finally, I’ll preview the Grammy Awards in next week’s issue, including picks and predictions. Thus far, Adele, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Little Big Town, Ellie Goulding, Andra Day, Carrie Underwood, Sam Hunt, James Bay, Tori Kelly, The Mavericks and Lady Gaga are all scheduled to perform.

Gunderson’s fascination with scientific women is a boon to us all. She not only informs us that they exist, she brings them to life, with hopes, fears, lust, ambition, brilliance, and the willingness to break the societal bonds that tried to keep them from their accomplishments. So, we meet Henrietta Leavitt.

Leavitt was an astronomer who fought all her life to achieve what she did, and volunteered for years at Harvard College Observatory just to be close to their telescope and to work in her field. She lived a fairly short life, dying at 53, as many did at the time, from cancer. But by that point, she had discovered so much about stars that her

In the Next Room or the vibrator play, Burien Actors Theatre, 2/12-3/6 Dr. Givings isn’t sure exactly how the vibrators help the women he treats, but they keep coming back for more. The only woman he won’t treat is his own wife, who longs to connect with him, but not electrically.

9 to 5 The Musical, Seattle Musical Theatre, 2/18-3/6 Based on the seminal 20th Century Fox hit film. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical jerk they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot!

While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,”

discoveries allowed other scientists, including Edward Hubble, to determine that the Milky Way was one of billions of galaxies, rather than the only one.

Silent Sky allows this woman to live and breathe, showing the societal constraints she was up against. Leavitt (played by a luminous Hana Lass) is surrounded by a somewhat neglected sister (Candace Vance), two other “computers” and women scientists who achieved much at Harvard despite the condescension, Williamina Fleming (Kim Morris) and Annie Cannon (Nikki Visel), and a male supervisor (endearingly played by Calder Jameson Shilling).

An elegantly spare staging by Mark Lund allows for simple changes in a few furnishings to seamlessly go from the Leavitt home in Wisconsin to Harvard’s astronomy center. Director Karen Lund

surely guides the actors in creating the turn of the century atmosphere, with the help of Sarah Burch Gordon’s gorgeous period costuming.

Lass is always compelling and watchable. Here she has to overcome a bit of a languid Act One where not very much “happens,” but the characters are well established. So, her stage charisma is very much needed. But the rest of the cast totally pull their weight with Morris making great use of her comedic timing and Visel playing an acerbic, bracing and ultimately laudable astronomer, herself. Vance gets the only nonscientist role, but fills in the family story and provides some lovely singing to boot.

Shilling, the lone male, has a lot to overcome from the box that playwright Gunderson puts his character in. He starts off almost entirely unlikable and then wins the audience over as he also wins Leavitt’s

heart. Though there isn’t historically a proof that Leavitt fell in love, it adds some humanity, and struggle, into the character, enlarging her in the entertainment.

Once established, Act Two entices with more emotion in both the human and scientific arenas. Gunderson’s prose here veers into poetic pronouncements about life that are well received. And some lovely lighting (by Amanda Sweger) surprises, allowing for a truly moving ending.

Give this one a go! You’ll learn something and be entranced at the same time.

A marvelous cast in Schmeater’s In Arabia

IN ARABIA WE’D ALL BE KINGS THEATER SCHMEATER Through February 13 Theater Schmeater is performing an early Stephen Adly Guirgis play, In Arabia We’d All Be Kings. Guirgis is now an exciting and accomplished playwright and we currently have two ongoing productions in Seattle to choose from – his play The Motherfucker with the Hat is at Washington Ensemble Theatre.

This play is more “episodic” and jerky, with scenes that tell a story when strung together, but with a lot of holes and plotlines left out. Still, it has compelling characters, some really funny moments, even within a rather gritty, down-and-out subject area.

Several characters swirl around a run-down bar (circa 1990s) that is gentrifying and dis-

placing its old clientele for more profit and an upscale crowd. Guirgis seems to want to ask, “What happens to those people who used to populate the lower-class bar?”

Director Julia Griffin has collected a group of talented actor to create this gritty atmosphere and even tiny roles are a joy to watch. Drew Hobson is probably what might be called the lead, Lenny, a big, threatening, recently-paroled low-life who wants life to be the same as he left it six years earlier. That includes his girlfriend, Daisy (Elena Flory-Barnes), who doesn’t want to tell him she’s more with bar owner Jake (Brandon Felker) than with Lenny now. Hobson gives the best performance I’ve seen from him, and embodies his character fully.

A great scene is one with another old friend of Lenny’s, Ms. Reyes (Yolanda Suarez), and her angry and thuggish daughter DeMaris (Ayo Tushinde). Mom seems willing to become the next girlfriend, while

DeMaris initially looks like a typical teen until she explodes into an unrecognizable terror. But then, she’s “just foolin’.” This is great writing, weaving humor and danger together. But the actors make the most of it, too.

Then there is the drug addicted Skank (Nik Doner) and Chickie (Jacqueline Miedema), and a hapless bartender Charlie (Samuel Hagen), who wants to protect Chickie and can’t even tell her he really loves her. Doner portrays a delicate addict who is almost too afraid to be able to survive. Miedema is a cross between naïve and old-soul and has a great scene with Tushinde “teaching” her to be a hooker that is another marvel of tragicomedy. Hagen does a nice job of being a nice guy, though it’s not a stretch for him.

Other characters include the resident drunk Sammy (a shatteringly tragic Michael Ramquist), a “flamboyant” (word used advisedly) real estate developer Greer

(Draeko Damen) and various inhabitants of the streets (played by Andrew Shanks).

The set is not as successful as it might be, with projections that don’t work that well to change the scenery, though the attempt is clear. But it doesn’t impede the rhythm of the production.

Go to see these keen characterizations, and perhaps to add to your collection of Guirgis plays you have seen. Having the opportunity to see the breadth of a playwright’s work is a great way to learn about his/her creative process over time.

Bullets Over Broadway – the Musical at the Paramount

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer BULLETS OVER BROADWAY – THE MUSICAL PARAMOUNT THEATRE Through February 7 Bullets Over Broadway is one of many screen-to-stage adaptations to hit Broadway. Utilizing music from the era of the ’20s and ’30s, the musical has gunned its way onto the Paramount stage, and is based on the movie (and adapted for the stage) by Woody Allen.

The storyline is very similar to its movie counterpart. A young struggling playwright (David Shayne) is about to find his first success on Broadway. After a Mob Boss (Nick Valenti) gangster backs the show to have his talentless girlfriend (Olive) become the lead, the show starts to go awry. The Boss’s bodyguard (Cheech) privately makes suggestions to the playwright and the show takes on a new life…until the playwright begins to loose control and Cheech starts to think of the show as being his creation.

Michael Williams plays David the playwright on the brink with a lot of enthusiasm. His voice is strong and the ambitious persona, in which he portrays the character, is very evident indeed. Mr. Williams is an agile dancer with great dexterity. His moves are graceful and he easily takes on the challenges of the [Susan] Stroman choreography. He keeps the charm with which his film predecessor (John Cusack) previously portrayed his character, and adds a personal aghast-ridden trait that works with the character. Jemma Jane plays the talentless Mob Moll, Olive. This character is a bit too stereotypically dumb blonde for the au-

dience to swallow. Almost everything from Olive’s movements to the way she sounds is what anyone would expect from this formulaic character. This only goes to show the talent that Ms. Jane possesses – it takes talent to portray the talentless well, and Jemma Jane does it very well indeed. She adds comic relief to an otherwise languid script, except even the movements are cliché causing the audience to chuckle instead of guffaw. The leading character of this show has to be the Mob Hit-man Cheech, played by Jeff Brooks. Mr. Brooks brings it; his performance is NOT a stereotype despite how easy it would be to portray him that way. Mr. Brooks adds comedy the way it was meant to be in this type of show: subtly, and with timing. His voice is as strong as his stage presence, which is difficult to ignore. The other characters that we know

from the film are presented well, but even Helen Sinclair is a Diva stereotype and the “Don’t Speak” scenes fall flat and get lost in this rather methodic show. There’s a lot of talent on stage, unfortunately the script doesn’t utilize most of it.

As with any musical the songs are an important character of the show. In this case, it bombs. Woody Allen purposely chose to use only timepiece music from the ’20s and ’30s. The songs worked much better as a background film underscore than having the characters singing them on stage. While characters breaking out in song may not be realistic, the songs these people sing seem disjointed, and are clearly thrown in for the sake to qualify as a musical. The finale, “Yes, We Have No Bananas,” is so split from the storyline that it is obviously thrown in strictly for the sake of

having an upbeat musical ending. Unfortunately, this musical is a case of what works on screen doesn’t always work on stage.

The saving grace of this show is the second largest name on the billing, Susan Stroman. There is a lot of dancing choreographed by this acclaimed Broadway director/choreographer. As can be expected from her previous shows (Contact, The Music Man, The Producers) her large, exaggerated style easily spreads across the stage in a flashy, well-managed way. Those familiar with dance will see the Fosse influences that seem to be the basis for Ms. Stroman’s ideas, and it is enjoyable to watch. From the Chorine girls in the clubs performing their acts, or the hit men’s energetic rendition of “Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do,” the dancing is the clearly the attraction of this musical.

While the stage musical is enjoyable, the movie doesn’t have a large enough following to successfully translate to a live production. If you’ve never seen the film, your enjoyment level may be higher than that of the average audience member. If you’ve seen the movie, then pretty much whatever you thought of the film is what you’ll think of the stage production, but one step lower.

Following its 1835 premiere, Mary Stuart was initially considered too controversial by authorities, which led to its ban and neglect for more than 100 years. A performance in Donizetti’s hometown of Bergamo re-introduced the piece into operatic repertoire, where it has grown in popularity ever since. Skadoosh! Po’s third Kung Fu adventure packs a pleasing punch

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer KUNG FU PANDA 3 Now playing Panda Po (voiced by Jack Black), the fabled Dragon Warrior and fun-loving leader of the Furious Five made up of fearless warriors Tigress (Angelina Jolie-Pitt), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu) and Crane (David Cross), is perplexed when his teacher Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) states he will no longer be training the group. Instead, it will be up to Po to do this, proclaiming the task must fall to the chubby bear if he is ever going to live up to his full potential and unlock the mysterious power of Qi (pronounced “chi”).

As strange as this might initially appear, Shifu’s intentions are never allowed the chance to blossom thanks to a pair of unexpected events. The first is the arrival of Po’s long-lost father Li (Bryan Cranston), revealing to his missing son the existence of a hidden panda sanctuary while also offering to take him there so he can meet more of his species. The second is the appearance of warrior Kai (J.K. Simmons), a former friend turned enemy of the late Master Oogway (Randall Duk Kim), emerging from the mysterious Spirit Realm to destroy the Furious Five, defeat Master Shifu and steal the power of Qi from all the remaining pandas living within their mountain sanctuary.

This is Kung Fu Panda 3, the supposedly final step in the story of Po as the Dragon Warrior who is tasked with facing down his most imposing adversary yet while also discovering things about his abilities he heretofore didn’t know existed. At the same time, he also learns, not only does his fa-

ther still live, but so does an entire village of fellow pandas, he and his adopted father, the noodle-selling duck Mr. Ping (James Hong), journeying to this isolated mountain hideaway, absolutely astonished by what it is they find.

It’s a lot for Po to deal with, and considering our furry hero has never been the best at being able to focus, it’s understandable that all of this has him more than a little flustered. Thing is, even with so much going on that’s ripe in dramatic, characterdriven comedic potential, it takes some time before this third entry in the popular animated series finds its footing and begins to click on all cylinders. Thankfully, when it does, it is right when it needs to, the last 30 minutes building up to the rousing, energetically exuberant climax so wonderful they end up making the initial, unfocused missteps of the early portions barely even matter.

But there’s a lot of shaky ground here, and it’s difficult not to notice it. Kai’s villainous plan is fairly ephemeral and nondescript, and other than wreaking a lot of havoc and stealing the Qi (pronounced “chi”) of all the kung fu masters he defeats – while also transforming them into his mindless jade-colored slaves – there’s not a lot to what he wants to do. More, Li’s introduction to all of this is relatively amateurish, feeling more like something out of a sitcom than a major motion picture. It also seems like it takes Cranston a little bit of time to get a handle on the character and what it is he’s hoping to do with him, and as great as it is to hear him tap back into his comedic side it’s not until the pair end up in the supposed safety of the secret panda village that the actor begins to find his groove.

Yet, the pre-credits opening featuring Kai and Master Oogway in the Spirit Realm is spectacular, setting a tone I had

trouble thinking any other portion of the film was going to be able to equal let alone top. Happy to say, not only does this happen, it does so at the perfect time, right at the end, the last act of the film truly sublime. Not only is it marvelous from an action perspective, it’s also sublime from a character-driven one as well. From Tigress accepting Po as a teacher, to his maturation as a mentor to an embarrassment of pandas, to his willingness to make what can only be described as an ultimate sacrifice to defeat Kai – all of it works, every second, even to the point I wanted to stand up and cheer by the time the fight between the hero and the villain had come to its end.

Somewhat surprisingly, it all begins with James Hong. Not only have returning screenwriters Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger done right by Po’s adoptive father Mr. Ping, giving him the majority of the best gags and biggest laughs, they’ve also given the veteran character actor the most complex and heartfelt emotive beats as well. It is Mr. Ping’s realization as to what family means, what being a parent and fa-

ther is all about, that gives his son the belief that he can not only train the villagers, but also stand up to Kai. Mr. Ping does this by working directly with Li, the two males putting their differences aside in order to do what is best for their son, and in so doing work a type of magic that touched my heart while also bringing on a handful of honestly earned happy tears.

There’s no denying that this third chapter in Po’s saga cannot hold a candle to the 2008 first film that got the good-natured panda’s story rolling; and I can’t help but wish the initial first couple of acts of this third tale could have been a little more focused, and felt a little less fractured, than they ultimately did. But there’s no denying that Kung Fu Panda 3 concludes on a high note, filled with eye-popping animated set pieces as well as thrilling story beats that I was perfectly entertained by. If it is the end of the road for this particular hero, he certainly goes out a winner. In other words, this sequel is a total Skadoosh! and there’s not a heck of a lot more to add.

al,” or announcement of the contestants. “I fell in love with them the first moment we met, and I can’t wait to unleash these crazy and talented bitches onto the world.”

Austen meets Romero with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

It’s safe to say, of all the pieces of fiction that Jane Austen’s novel has inspired, I’d hazard a guess that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies would be the one that likely would have left the author the most dumbfounded. First a novel written by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter scribe Seth Grahame-Smith, now a major motion picture showcasing Cinderella starlet Lily James, this is as crazy, bordering on nonsensical, an idea as any I could have imagined myself. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy decapitate the undead while they engage in a droll verbal duel that will ultimately lead to their realizations of love for one another? Preposterous, or, at least, that’s what I thought before I entered the theatre to watch this film adaptation for myself.

Funny thing, screenwriter/director Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down) treats his task with bizarre seriousness, intent on crafting a proper, thoughtful and romantically complex adaptation of Austen’s half of the source material, one that just so happens to have flesh-eating zombies popping in and out at the most inopportune of times. He obsesses over the costumes, the period details, the social mores and customs of the time, allowing the Bennet sisters to discuss the pros and cons of romance and of being a wife, all while they’re training to slay the undead using martial art techniques picked up while studying in China. It’s absurd, yet it also strangely works, making the film something of an eccentrically giddy pleasure I fell more and more in love with as things went on.

This miracle is quickly snuffed out by a Nazi doctor more interested in the child for study than he is in saving his life, Saul more devastated than normal by what it is he has been forced to witness.

Something snaps. While many of his fellow Sonderkommando prepare for an uprising that will hopefully lead to their escape, Saul begins to believe the now dead boy is, in fact, his own son, a child he was separated from and in his mind failed as a father. Now, in death, he will provide the sort of love, care and understanding the Germans never allowed him to give him in life. Saul will save this boy from cremation, he will bury him, he will find a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish, and he will do all of this with Nazi soldiers watching his every step.

This is Son of Saul, a powerfully emotional masterpiece that ended up on my own top ten list as one of the best motion pictures of 2015 and was recently honored

involving Wickham and his plans to upend Darcy while also charting a new direction for the growing zombie menace just do not work, and as villains go Huston is somewhat unexpectedly a rather facile one who’s nowhere near as menacing as he needs to be. There’s also some pretty bad CGI that makes things look like a Resident Evil knock-off, while the film’s last scene is unbelievably pointless and should have been left on the cutting room floor.

But James, as she was in Cinderella, is glorious, while Dance dominates his scenes as the authoritative yet loving Mr. Bennet in ways that transcend the material. Smith steals scenes left and right, his comedic timing impeccable throughout. As for the chemistry between Booth and Heathcote, it’s through the roof, the point in the story where Mr. Bingley is convinced to break things off with Jane garnering a rather potent emotional response from me I didn’t see coming. My only question mark is Riley, his take on the stoic Mr. Darcy one I was never altogether certain of, and as his relationship with Elizabeth is the crux around which all else revolves this is a significant issue that admittedly kept me from embracing the finished film as completely as I maybe otherwise would have.

It should be noted that, although receiving a PG-13 rating, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is amazingly violent, and I can only think it avoided an R rating because amidst all the decapitations, eviscerations and impaling there is astonishingly little in the way of blood. That caveat aside, for those willing to give this Jane Austen meets George A. Romero mash-up a chance, Steers’ adaptation of Grahame-Smith’s source material is a heck of a lot of fun, and without a doubt it ranks as 2016’s first official out-of-nowhere pleasant surprise.

Bennet (James) and her sisters Jane (Bella Heathcote), Lydia (Ellie Bamber), Mary (Millie Brady) and Kitty (Suki Waterhouse) attempt to live up to the high standards set by their loving father Mr. Bennet (Charles Dance). At the same time, their doting mother Mrs. Bennet (Sally Phillips) is eager for all of her girls to marry, worried they’ll end up penniless spinsters because English law will not allow her husband to leave any of his estate to them.

From there, Elizabeth ends up making the acquaintance of Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley), a haughty, opinionated nobleman who is caught off-guard by a member of the opposite sex who is able to match both his intelligence as well as his verbal virtuosity. The headstrong Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Lena Headey) is here, as is comical fop Pastor Collins (Matt Smith), while the secretive George Wickham (Jack Huston) plans both to increase his social standing as well as marry a woman well above

his station. Seriously, it’s Pride and Prejudice, even down to Jane getting sick during a rainstorm and Mr. Bingley (Douglas Booth) insisting she remains at his home with sister Elizabeth by her side, the various romantic entanglements that ensue same here as they are in Austen’s timeless novel.

Thrust into all of this, however, is a zombie apocalypse, down to infectious bites, the consumption of brains and the belief the undead hordes can somehow be contained. It’s as silly as it sounds, yet, because Steers plays things so straight, treats things with such dramatic sincerity, gosh darn it if all this mayhem and chaos doesn’t actually work. There are thrills, there are chills and goodness knows there are a number of laughs, Steers doing a fine job of balancing things with a straight-laced glee that’s kind of wonderful.

There is some overreach, but in many ways that is to be expected. Some of the bits

with an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It is the narrative feature debut for Hungarian director László Nemes, the filmmaker forcing the viewer to see the Holocaust and life inside of a Concentration Camp in a way they likely never have before.

It is an intimate, claustrophobic descent into madness and death that can’t help but make one uncomfortable. At the same time, Nemes, who co-wrote the script with Clara Royer, manages to find hope residing inside all of this unimaginable horror, allowing for moments of familial reconciliation and redemption that are eloquent in their delicate, mournful fragility. While this story is smothered in tragedy, there is something poignant and cathartic about what Saul is attempting to achieve, all of it speaking to a form of spirituality and faith that crosses religious barriers to become something universal and timeless.

I’m not going to lie. Son of Saul is hardly an easy sit. Nemes has his cinematographer Mátyás Erdély (The Quiet Ones) shoot things in a never-ending series of boxy, handheld close-ups that only add to the sense of misery and despair that permeates every second of the motion picture. It is as

if the director was forcing me to stand right next to Saul and his fellow Sonderkommando, was making me be subjected to every slight, every slap and every bullet right along next to them. It’s an immersive, clinically upsetting foray into this world that goes beyond documentary-like realism to become something else entirely, the collective madness assaulting these men in various ways and in differentiating forms doing the same to me as events progressed.

Röhrig is superb. His performance is raw, stripped naked to its marrow, the actor revealing things about the character and who he is as he doggedly does all he can to succeed in the task he has set in front of himself, consequences be damned. It’s an emotional tour-de-force that captivated me completely, all of it leading to a final moment between Saul and a mysterious second young boy that is as haunting as it is magical, tragedy and salvation weaving one inside the other in a way that caught me entirely by surprise.

In the end, the only thing I can compare Son of Saul to is Claude Lanzmann’s epic, groundbreaking 1985 documentary Shoah, the level of introspective objectivity eerily, and intimately, similar, even with Nemes’s

debut being an entirely fictional enterprise.

But it feels real, start to finish, and by the time it came to an end I found myself shaking and shivering in ways I seldom ever have. Important as it is essential, the movie is a remarkable achievement deserving of every honor and ounce of acclaim it has so far achieved, watching it a catastrophically profound experience I’m not soon to forget.
