Celebrating 41 Years!

ICON GONE: David Bowie dies, but for fans who listened to his music and saw him perform, these were the golden years

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The death of David Bowie, a musical hero to millions, caught everyone by surprise this week. It was a shocking, emotional end to an artist who stayed true to his odd, brilliant, edgy and experimental style right down to his final recording, Blackstar, released January 8.

Thumbing through vinyl albums at a record store, when I was a kid, was the first time I’d ever laid eyes on David Bowie.

The cover of Diamond Dogs was enough to spark my curiosity. But my older brother quickly scolded me for looking “at that freak” and told me to put it back. Years later, that same brother would also tell my mom that he caught me watching one of Bowie’s music videos on MTV, which got me into trouble, though in a turn of events my mother bought me a vinyl copy of Let’s Dance, yet it came with instructions: hide it from my father.

There was something about the way Bowie looked and acted that didn’t earn the stamp of approval from my parents, or the mainstream. Unbeknownst to them, and against their wishes, I listened to David Bowie anyway. I wasn’t content just listening to Let’s Dance, I nosedived into his early catalog with help from a fellow classmate; in fact, I spent many afternoons “studying” at her house, listening to everything from Space Oddity to Hunky Dory to Young Americans. The more I heard, the more obsessed I became.

Bowie’s music has followed me from high school to college, apartment to apartment, boyfriend to boyfriend, vinyl to cassette to CD to digital. I’ve always had his music with me. I’ve listened to it in a car, a train, a plane, on bright sunny days and cold winter nights. It was always with me and around me, because it was a part of me.

That’s why David Bowie’s passing is so difficult for fans to shake off. Because his

music, and he himself, were a part of us.

Not a small part, a big part. I never stopped listening to him since I was a kid. He was someone I kept listening to, even as musical styles changed in the ’80s, ’90s, and into the new millennium.

As a teenager, I didn’t yet know I was Gay. I had no idea if David Bowie was Gay. All I knew was that I could relate to him.

He was unique, mysterious, and outlandish.

For a pimply, slightly flamboyant, sexually curious, nerdy kid like me, his songs and his appearance were something I could connect with.

The zenith of all my days listening to David Bowie and watching his music videos was getting the opportunity to see him live, three times, in Seattle (Paramount Theatre, Key Arena) and at the Tacoma Dome. My favorite was his Paramount performance, where fans were spellbound to hear a range of hits from throughout his then 37-year career, including “Fame,” “The Man Who Sold the World,” “Under Pressure,” “Life on Mars,” “Ashes to Ashes,” and the show opener, “Rebel Rebel.”

For many Gay men, such as myself, Bowie was an inspiration and a way to channel our inner curiosities. He was an open door to a world we hadn’t been exposed to, a world we wanted desperately to discover. He was a man who sometimes wore dresses and makeup. To the masses, that was creepy. To us, it was fascinating.

He liberated us to just be ourselves, as odd, or un-masculine, or sexually inquisitive, or radically different as we wanted to be.

And then there were the rumors of his sexual experimentation, later mentioned in books with juicy details, like his supposed affair with Mick Jagger. Though he mislabeled himself as Gay, and then Bisexual, he summed it all up during an appearance on “The Jonathan Ross Show” in 2002 by saying, “No, I was just happy” when asked to clarify his earlier days of being Gay, then not Gay. He continued by admitting, “I was incredibly promiscuous.”

Bowie, of course, ventured into film with appearances in the cult favorites Labyrinth, The Hunger, and The Last Temptation of Christ.

We lost a musical genius in David Bowie. His music speaks for itself; classic songs and innovative, critically acclaimed albums that we keep going back to and hearing all over again. Music that we grew up with, that we sang along with and danced to. Songs that we treasure, that bring back memories of getting ready for school, going through puberty, getting our hearts broken, fighting with our parents.

But we also said goodbye to a rock star and Gay icon, someone that helped us come out of our shell. It was too early for us to admit we were Gay, or even identify with that word or lifestyle, but we certainly knew we were different.

Generations to come will still be able to discover Bowie through the rich legacy of his music. Sadly, however, they’ll never be able to connect with him like we did, to follow him from album to album, tour to tour, interview to interview, glam rocker to Top 40 hits maker to indie darling. That opportunity has vanished.

David Bowie died on January 10, 2016 with his family at his side in New York. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, won his only Grammy in 1985 for Best Video, Short Form (Jazzin’ for Blue Jean), and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. David Bowie was one of a kind.

Among the new shows announced this week are Tinashe, who will play The Showbox SoDo on April 8, and openly Gay rocker Bob Mould, who appears at The Showbox Market on May 10; he’s interviewed twice with Seattle Gay News. Also coming to town are two Grammy nominees for Best New Artist, Courtney Barnett on April 21 (Moore Theatre) and Tori Kelly on May 16 (Paramount Theatre). There’s more: Lyle Lovett on March 22 (Pantages Theater, Tacoma), A Great Big World on March 26 (The Crocodile), and Parachute on April 16 (The Neptune).

Chabon credited a lot of his inspiration “to the work of the late Jack Kirby, the King of Comics.” Kirby, born Jacob Kurtzberg, established dozens of comic book characters, beginning with Captain America.

Now, Ghostlight Theatricals is presenting a new play about Kirby, King Kirby, in their Ballard Underground space. It’s written by cartoonist Fred van Lente with playwright Crystal Skillman.

The play, first produced in 2014, is essentially a bioplay, with a focus on Kirby’s struggle to manage to “own” his own creations, and the maneuvering for his art that rapacious cartoon oligarchies made to gain copyright ownership and strip him and other artists of their royalties. The play supposes that Kirby was more interested in cranking out the comics than in understanding and protecting his copyrights, so he never made that much money from his own art.

The script is serviceable, but in the hands of Ghostlight Managing Director, Rob Raas-Bergquist, the life of Jack Kirby blooms. An ensemble cast of five surrounds Rick Espaillat, a new transplant to the area, who plays Jack from a very young man to

Blue Neighbourhood has already produced three singles, “Wild,” “Talk Me Down,” and “Youth.” But my personal favorite is “Happy Little Pill” from his debut recording, TRXYE. Sivan will perform February 4 at The Showbox SoDo, as part of a North American tour that also includes concerts in Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami. past the end of his life (the play begins with Kirby’s death). Espaillat is mesmerizing, especially in his more emotional moments when he struggles with the politics of corporate “entertainment.”

Raas-Bergquist tasks each of the ensemble members (Jason Huff, Steven Sterne, James Lyle, Anastasia Greeley, Eileen McCann) to become several dozen people in Jack’s life over time. Each also gets to play one main character, except for Sterne, who plays a large handful of comic book publishers, generals, and politicians, and manages to differentiate every one of them in a small tour de force support performance.

They all do a great job as they weave the story through four large panels of drawings representing both cartooning and also “back stage” in a theater-in-the-round staging.

The production animates the story in an interesting way with ensemble members changing character frequently and even sharing portrayals of the same characters.

For instance, Greeley and McCann share portrayals of Jack’s wife, Rose; Greeley also shares the role of Joe Simon, Kirby’s business partner in the early years, with Lyle. This creates a dynamism that keeps you figuring out what’s happening. To some extent, it’s a bit mechanical, because the activity doesn’t necessarily add to the plot, but it does wake you up to pay attention to who is talking, since there’s a change in ac-

The lineup for this year’s Sasquatch Music Festival was unveiled this week with a stellar list of artists scheduled to perform, including The Cure, Florence + the Machine, Alabama Shakes, Major Lazer, Sufjan Stevens, Allen Stone, Grimes, M83, Caribou, A$AP Rocky, Purity Ring, Andra Day, Frightened Rabbit, Big Grams (Big Boi + Phantogram), Kurt Vile, and nearly three dozen additional acts. The 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, N.W.A, and Steve Miller. Appearing on the ballot, though rejected by voters, was Janet Jackson, who will have another shot in 2017. This year’s inductees will be honored with a ceremony on April 8 at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, which will be televised a few weeks later on HBO. Finally, the DJ group Major Lazer, fronted by Diplo, will be the first American music act to play in Cuba since relations between the U.S. and the Caribbean island nation have eased. They will perform March 6 at Tribuna Jose Marti. Diplo is nominated for Producer of the Year at this year’s Grammys.

The minimal set and the large graphics (by Brandon Estrella) are clean and energizing. Lighting by Mary Heffernan is onpoint, giving focus to the action. Costume designer Briana Schwartz had to bring comic book characters to life and also dress people in changing period clothing. That was nicely done.

Biographies are difficult to stage. This one gives you something to chew on (corporate greed, “what is art?” and such) while telling you a story you may never have

known about a great American art form.

The three men were right at the center of those tragic events that took place on September 11, 2012 in Benghazi, Libya, and while I had not seen the movie at the time of our chat my interest to hear them talk about their collective travails was still quite high.

At the same time, I still wanted to make sure I treated each man with the respect that they deserved. As such, I felt it only just to let each of them introduce themselves and their backgrounds as we were getting started.

Mark “Oz” Geist: Mark Geist. Call sign Oz. I joined the Marine Corp in 1984.

Did 12 years and became a cop after that. I started contracting in 2004, and did that up until the point I got blown up in Benghazi.

John “Tig” Tiegen: John Tiegen. Call sign Tig. Did four years in the Marine Corp. Started contracting in 2003. Did that pretty much all the way through 2013.

Kris “Tanto” Paronto: Kris Paronto.

Call sign Tanto. Was in the 2nd Ranger Battalion stationed here over at Ft. Lewis. Also served in the 8th Battalion, Special Forces.

Served eight years. Started contracting in 2003 and did that for pretty much ten years, including some time after Benghazi. I also carried the team that night.

Tig: Yeah. He was bringing us chow.

Oz: Brought us water. You know that guy that you have on the football team? The guard-and-tackle? The guy that sits at the end of the bench and guards the water and protects the tackle? That was Tanto.

All joking aside, it’s quickly apparent just how connected these three men are, able to finish one another’s thoughts and sentences, as well as engage in a brotherly put-down, at the drop of a hat. With only 15 minutes to chat, our conversation covered as much ground as it could, each man more than willing to speak about their experiences in Benghazi as well as what it was like standing on a film set alongside director Michael Bay seeing it reenacted. Here are some of the highlights from that conversation: Sara Michelle Fetters: What is that people don’t know about contractors? As former Marines and an ex-Ranger, what do you want people to understand about that job? What are the misconceptions?

Tanto: I think people turn us into mercenaries. That’s completely false. Mitchell, when he wrote the book, and Michael, when he started to make the movie, both wanted to make sure that came across, that we’re not mercenaries. We’re still the same guys. We still want to serve our country in the best way we know how.

Myself, I was medically discharged in 2003. I was diagnosed with Chrone’s Disease and, with the Army, you can’t serve anymore with that being the case. So this was my only way to continue to serve. Otherwise, I would have had to retire. And, listen, we all have families. We all have young children. We’re all fathers. We want to do the best we can for our families, for our children.

Tig: Yeah. I mean, all most people know is what they hear in the media. Blackwater. That mess. Look, everyone is going to have their ten-percent that’s just going to suck. Contracting is just like anything else.

It’s the same with the military. You’re going to have those bad apples no matter what.

Same time, you’re not going to hear about the good things that happen. The me-

dia doesn’t tend to report on that. I think about the same time as all the Blackwater stuff, there was an incident where contractors flew into a [Middle East hotspot] and rescued a number of military personnel because the military itself couldn’t get in to save them. There’s a lot of stuff that contractors have done, most of it positive, but what you hear in the media is that tenpercent, not the good stuff everyone else is doing.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Was writing this book something you jumped to right away? Or was there some trepidation?

Oz: It was, probably, after Christmas 2012, leading into the Spring, and we had just seen the story bastardized by both the Left and the Right and getting spun into something it wasn’t. At a certain point, there was a guy who came out with an eBook about what had happened at Benghazi, what Ty [team leader Tyrone “Rone” Woods tragically died during the attack] and Glen [Glen “Bub” Doherty was also killed during the attack] did, and he wasn’t even there, hadn’t talked to any of us. He was using rumor and conjecture to tell the story while other people were doing the same to push their own various political agendas, and it just pissed us off.

I mean, the sacrifices that Ambassador Chris Stevens made, that Sean Smith made, that Ty and Glen made, for someone to take this story and turn it into politics, turn it into something it wasn’t, it made us mad.

We got together and talked as a team and tried to figure out a way to do this. We knew if we just went to the media and said, hey, this is wrong, it would only get spun again.

We needed to do something more concrete.

Tanto had been on a protective detail with a writer and asked her how we should go about doing this. Her advice was crucial and it just sort of went from there.

Tanto: Oz was seriously injured at the time. He was hospitalized. But the rest of us continued to deploy. In fact, DB [Dave “Boon” Benton], Jack Silva and I, we were on our way to Yemen. But, to do a book, it wasn’t, wow, let’s do a book. We were still working. But, after about eight months of listening to all of this, when you’re seeing the misconceptions, the outright lies, the way the Right and Left kept distorting things and the way the media kept spinning it all, it just became too much. We had to do what we thought was the right thing to do, and that was to tell the truth. We all lost our jobs because of it, but that was a sacrifice we were all willing to make. For me, it didn’t even feel like a sacrifice.

Sara Michelle Fetters: There’s a ticking clock aspect to the book, a point where you all know what is happening but you can’t do anything.

Tanto: Yeah. The point where we knew the reports, knew what was going on, but were told to stand down. That was pretty rough.

Oz: Seconds count. Let me say that again. Seconds count. They counted for both the Ambassador and for Sean Smith because they died of smoke inhalation.

Wasn’t like it was a gut-shot that killed them. Those 25 minutes, plus the 30 minutes it took for us to fight our way onto the site, you’re talking almost an hour before we even got to the door. You could say that time where we were tasked to stand our ground potentially cost both men their lives.

Tanto: We’re all older. We’ve been doing this for a long time. We know those seconds count, but we also know you can’t get upset, can’t lose your cool. We had all these CIA people running around, all these Ja-

son Bournes running around, and we knew if we looked like we were panicking then they were going to start panicking, and we couldn’t have that happen. You hold it together.

So, outside, you’re holding it together, but inside…

Tig: You’re flaming.

Tanto: Right. Inside you’re like, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go. And you’re hearing your buddies on the line, guys you swore to you’d be there if they ever needed anything, and they’re saying if you don’t get here soon we’re all going to F-ing die; holding it together becomes increasingly difficult. But you have to. You don’t have a choice. And it’s the training. You need that hard training. You need that experience. You need to learn how to control that range, how to handle that crisis situation. You know how to act and how not to act. The difference is important.

Sara Michelle Fetters: I come from a military family. My Dad served. My Mom served. My sister was an Army Medic in Iraq. But they don’t really talk about their service, especially my sister. She’ll talk to you about almost anything, but not about Iraq.

Oz: We’ve done speaking engagements, and we’ll have spouses come up to us afterwards [and] tell us that their [husbands or their wives] were having a lot of trouble speaking about their experiences, but hearing us speak, they’re starting to open up; they’re starting to deal with some of those lingering issues. That they’ve been doing better. That means a lot to us, I think. You can’t bottle that stuff up. You need to talk.

Sara Michelle Fetters: So, for you guys, in a way this might not just be therapeutic or cathartic for you, but also for those hearing your story as well? That it’s helpful for those who have had similar experiences to hear you guys talk about?

Tanto: I speak to vets with PTSD, with post-traumatic stress. I tell them, you’ve got to talk. You’ve got to let it out. Don’t keep it inside. You have to realize your life is no longer the same, and if you keep that inside it’s going to eat you, eat you, eat you.

Tig: Everything that you dealt with during deployment, if you don’t talk about it, it’s going to manifest itself at some point. It just is. You bottle it up and it’s just going to explode.

Oz: Some people can handle it for a while. Everybody is different. But nobody can do it forever. Hold all of that inside. Nobody.

Sara Michelle Fetters: I have to wrap things up, and while I’d love to keep going in this direction, we do have to talk about the movie.

Tanto: It’s the job. Got to do the job.

And by the time we got onboard, there was just a comfort level that really helped ease a lot of worries. For me, they earned that trust. They gave us a platform to tell the truth and honor the four Americans who died in a way we couldn’t with the book.

People have to understand, we have roughly 300 diplomatic facilities around the world. You’ve got guys over there, not just official military but diplomatic security personnel, case officers and contractors all over the place. Since 2001 there’s been somewhere between 3,500 and 5,000 contractors killed in 80 different countries.

You don’t hear about that. This movie, this is another way to bring recognition to the service these people are doing worldwide.

It’s important.

Tanto: Michael earned our respect, listening to what we had to say. Same with Chuck. He earned our respect, too, by being willing to make revisions to the script when our input differed from how they were depicting things. They’ve all done by us. We’ve been blessed and lucky. The whole process has gone far more smoothly than we initially feared it was going to go.

Sara Michelle Fetters: At the end of the day, it’s not going to really matter how I, as a critic, react to the film. In many ways, it doesn’t really matter how industry people in Hollywood react. In the case of this film, it really does boil down to how the general public react, what it is they are talking about and thinking as they exit the theatre.

What are you hoping they’re saying? What do you want them to feel?

Tanto: The positives of that night. Not the negatives. Not the politics. The movie is apolitical. The book is apolitical. You’re not going to see politics. You’re going to see sacrifice. You’re going to see brotherhood.

You’re going to see honor. I want people walking out of the theatre thinking, I can deal with adversity, thinking that they can deal with anything.

Oz: And I hope they give respect back to the four guys who lost their lives. These men are heroes. They gave everything for their country, something most politicians never do.

Tig: They had a brief coming home ceremony and then their names have subsequently been used in vain, for other purposes for both sides Left and Right having nothing to do with that night, and I hold neither side in more or less contempt than the other. They have both been at fault. This movie is about their service and their sacrifice, and hopefully it helps give those things back to all of them.

Sara Michelle Fetters: So, doing the job then, why a movie? And, more than that, why just Michael Bay? Tig: Three Arts, they’re the ones that represented us for the book, and they brought us the idea of doing a movie. And there were some reservations. Lots of them.

You’re going to lose creative control. But we decided, the worst thing that could happen is that we listen to a few ideas, that we see what kind of interest was out there and either there wasn’t any or, if there was, we were going to hear concepts we could always say no to. Just see how it is.

Of all the studios we talked to, Paramount was the one that didn’t just respond positively to how we wanted to tell the story, but it was also the studio that just felt right. They brought in Michael Bay. They

Indie sensations Room and Brooklyn were also singled out for the top prize, as were Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic The Martian and Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies. J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Todd Haynes’ Carol and Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl had to make do with a number of acting and technical category nominations, all three left out of the final Best Picture field.

As far as overall nominations were concerned, The Revenant led the way with 12, including one for last year’s Best Director winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu as well as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nods for stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. Mad Max: Fury Road also did quite well with ten, 70-year-old George Miller receiving his first Best Director nod, although he did win an Oscar in 2007 for feature animation winner Happy Feet. The Martian picked up seven nods, its most notable one outside of Best Picture being a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay and writer Drew Goddard. Spotlight and Carol both scooped up six total nominations each, while The Big Short and the year’s biggest box office sensation Star Wars: The Force Awakens were both recognized in five categories.

Joining Iñárritu and Miller in the Best Director category were Lenny Abrahamson (Room), Adam McKay (The Big Short) and Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), while standing alongside DiCaprio for best actor are Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and last year’s winner Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl). Best Actress features newcomers Brie Larson (Room) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) standing alongside former winners Cate Blanchett (Carol) and Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), cinematic legend Charlotte Rampling rounding out the category with her first-ever nomination for British drama 45 Years.

In the supporting categories, former winner Christian Bale (The Big Short), esteemed veteran Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and three-time nominee Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight) are up for Best Supporting Actor alongside Hardy, Sylvester Stallone (Creed) rounding out the category, receiving his first acting nod in 39 years for playing the same role in 1976’s Rocky). Seventime nominee and former Best Actress winner Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) leads the way in Best Supporting Actress, Rooney Mara (Carol), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) rounding out the category.

Best Animated Feature was reasonably surprising, box office smash Inside Out leading the way while relative unknowns Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Shaun the Sheep Movie and When Marnie Was There nabbed spots most assumed were going to go to more high-profile efforts like The Peanuts Movie and Minions. Best Foreign Language Film saw countries Jordan (Theeb) and Columbia (Embrace of the Serpent) receive their first-ever nominations, Denmark’s A War, France’s Mustang and supposed frontrunner Son of Saul from Hungary the other three nominees. As for Best Documentary Feature, Amy, Cartel Land, The Look of Silence, What Happened, Miss Simone? and Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom are the nominees, notable omissions being the college campus rape doc The Hunting Ground and Michael Moore’s latest controversial feature Where to Invade Next.

One imagines returning Oscar host Chris Rock will have plenty to talk about in regards to this year’s nominees, all 20 of the acting slots going to Caucasian actors for the second year in a row, while even Straight Outta Compton’s only nomination (Best Original Screenplay) ended up going to its two white screenwriters. Additionally, while the fact three of the eight Best Picture nominees (Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road and Room) focus on female protagonists, the lack of women in a number of major categories (notably directing, but also cinematography and original score) continues to be vexing, the overall demographic makeup of Academy membership (primarily Caucasian and over the age of 65) leading to voting trends that remain troublesome, to say the least.

Bay’s 13 Hours a troublesome Benghazi procedural

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZAI Now playing It’s difficult not to look at Michael Bay’s adrenaline-fueled interpretation of author Mitchell Zuckoff’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi without utilizing some sort of political lens. No matter where one sits on the Left-Right political divide, those feelings can’t help but come into play, The Rock and Bad Boys director playing in the sandbox overflowing with, if you’ll pardon my saying it like this, hot button landmines galore.

The story of six military contractors who helped save countless American lives during the September 11, 2012 assault on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya that took four American lives, including that of Ambassador Chris Stevens, this is not a movie viewers will likely come to absent preconceptions. While Zuckoff’s book, written with the aid of three of the contractors, Kris “Tanto” Paronto, John “Tig” Tiegen and Mark “Oz” Geist, managed to remain reasonably apolitical, Bay’s film has trouble doing the same. As such, people are likely going to read into it exactly what they want to, the director’s intentions one way or the other likely not going to matter to most viewers.

Paramount’s film is not your typical January release. On one hand, it’s easy to assume the studio saw the box office grosses of American Sniper and Lone Survivor, not to mention the mediocre Navy SEAL actioner Act of Valor, and figured a somewhat similarly themed flick from the director of Transformers could duplicate that type of success. More than that, though, it’s just as likely the studio wanted to stay out of Presidential year discussions, figuring that if they enter the film into the marketplace now it’s likely people will have forgotten about it by the time November rolls around and they are casting their votes for

the next Commander-in-Chief.

To his credit, Bay, along with screenwriter Chuck Hogan (The Town), do try to match the tone and style of the source material, while at the same time attempting to hit the type of visceral, heart-pounding intensity Ridley Scott brought to Black Hawk Down and Kathryn Bigelow generated with both The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Yet his blatantly jingoistic tendencies can’t help but get the better of him, his depiction of events having the appearance of balance yet also filled with none-too-subtle clues as to which way the director is leaning. Scenes of Muslims during their prayers filled with shots of RPGs and AK-47s right at the center of the frame, while statements of how the Libyan people reacted to Ambassador Stevens’ death are juxtaposed with accusations of the country’s current state of disrepair that read almost as if Donald Trump wrote the copy and not the filmmakers.

Let me be fair, this is one heck of a wellmade motion picture. It’s also the most focused, the best put together feature Bay has had a hand in crafting since 1998’s Armageddon. From a purely structural standpoint, there’s little to get annoyed or upset about, and while the director hasn’t eschewed all his visual tendencies alto-

gether (there are still too many slo-mo shots of kids running through grassy fields, flags waving and blood-splattered combatants rising to attention with heroic symbolism), he checks them all just enough for the story to stay in focus. As crazy as things are, for as spread out as events turn out to be, understanding the geography of where everyone is at, where they’re trying to go and who it is the contractors are protecting is easy to follow, allowing for the inherent danger fueling events to become nail-bitingly palpable because of this.

As such, the director’s technical team is at their collective best. Dion Beebe’s (Memoirs of Geisha) cinematography is crisp and alive, while the editing job by Pietro Scalia (Gladiator) and Calvin Wimmer is, in my opinion, the best any Bay production has ever showcased. Additionally, the actors portraying the six contractors, John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, Pablo Schreiber, David Denman, Dominic Fumusa and Max Martini, are all outstanding, while supporting turn from Peyman Moaadi (as the team’s interpreter Amahl) and Demetrius Grosse (as State Department operative DS Dave Ubben) are equally solid.

But why is the team’s CIA boss (admittedly nicely portrayed by veteran character actor David Costabile) depicted with such

contemptible disdain? Why are female characters, chiefly a CIA spy played by Alexia Barlier, given the same misogynistic treatment as sadly seen in so many other Bay enterprises ranging from Bad Boys II, to Pain & Gain, to Transformers: Age of Extinction? Why is it the director can’t help himself, throwing in a nonsensical car chase that, whether accurate or not, feels like nothing more than a10-minute excuse to set things on fire and blow more stuff up?

The main issue, however, isn’t so much the attack on the diplomatic compound where Ambassador Stevens (Matt Letscher) and programmer Sean Smith (Christopher Dingli) both died of smoke inhalation, but instead on the subsequent assault on the fortified CIA enclave hours later. With the former, Bay manages to strike a balance between kinetic thrills and dramatic sensitivity to the story, keeping things from turning into a video game, making comparisons to Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty feel apt. But with the latter segment, the director falls into the same trap that brought Pearl Harbor down, and while the contractors’ defense of the Americans at the CIA base is suitably exciting, it also uncomfortably feels more like a Rambo or, forgive me for saying, a Missing in Action-style shooting gallery than it does anything else. As such, the emotional component is cheapened, at least partially, inserting a level of bad taste into the proceedings I found difficult to get past.

While I have read Zuckoff’s book and responded to it positively, I will not claim I am anything close to an authority as to just how accurate his recounting of the Benghazi tragedy is. Bay’s movie, while claiming to be true, feels even more slipshod, the director’s inability to remain above the fray and channel his inner Scott or Bigelow frustrating. Honestly, though, I don’t know what to make of 13 Hours other than to say it is as troublesome as it is impressive; and while I respect the director choosing to go out on this particular limb that doesn’t mean I believe he was the right person to undertake the job of doing so.
