SPECTRUM DANCE THEATER presents their 2015/2016 season: #RACEish: An Exploration of America’s 240 Years of (failed) Race Relations
The current state of affairs related to race relations in America are decidedly fragile, and in light of the growing necessity to encourage civic dialogue, Spectrum Dance Theater will focus its 2015/2016 season on programs and productions that instigate debate, conversation, and examination of RACE and EQUITY in America. As well, to encourage broad involvement in this dialogue, an aggressive social media campaign is very much a part of this season’s efforts, encouraging the use of #RACEish to stimulate commentary and response.
#RACEish: America, 240 Years, will include: The return of Donald Byrd’s provocative and critically acclaimed THE MINSTREL SHOW REVISITED, a critique of the 19th Century black-faced entertainment genre whose legacy is still felt today and continues to play a significant role in black stereotyping; The premiere of A RAP ON RACE, in collaboration with acclaimed actress and playwright Anna Deveare Smith, inspired by a 1970s conversation between white American cultural anthropologist see #raceish page 8
