Mayor Ed Murray Anti-Trans initiatives: discusses travel bans to Judge rules against hate states NC and MS bigots on ballot language by Victor Hawthorne SGN Staff Writer
Seattle Mayor Ed Murray signed executive orders in recent weeks banning official City of Seattle travel by City of Seattle employees to both North Carolina and Mississippi after the two states passed similar anti-LGBT laws. While the move is largely symbolic, as it would have virtually no direct economic impact on the two states, it is nonetheless important as it sends a strong message against discrimination at a pivotal time. In an interview with Mayor Murray on Thursday, April 14, I asked him to discuss his ban in greater detail and what it means for North Carolina, Mississippi, and the City of Seattle. Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson – nwpr.org
by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer A superior court judge has ruled against sponsors of a series of anti-Trans initiatives in Washington, leaving the state attorney general’s description of their ballot measures more or less intact. Local LGBT activists said they were “deeply pleased” with the judge’s decision. Attorney General Bob Ferguson is charged with writing the descriptions of
ballot initiatives that appear in voter guides and statewide ballots. His description of the measures designed to prohibit Trans people from using gender-appropriate restrooms did not meet the approval of the initiatives’ sponsors, so they sued to get more appealing language on the ballot. Thurston County Superior Court Judge Anne Hirsch ruled against them on April 13. The ballot summary will now read as follows – depending on which of several see BIGOTS page 16

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor The Seattle Police Department is about to host something very profound. On April 27-28, with the SPD LGBTQ Liaison Officer Jim Ritter at its helm, the department with host hundreds of law enforcement leaders and Department of Justice folks for a two-day conference to address hate crimes in our communities. Never before has anything like this been done. Who knows why or why not – and frankly – who
cares. The point is it is happening and it is happening here because Ritter and SPD leadership, from Chief Kathleen O’Toole on down, recognized that bias crimes were on the rise last year and that was not okay. Other cities and jurisdictions will also share similar stories I’m sure. So what better way to attack the problem than by getting leaders, lessons-learned, and powerful anti-violence advocates together for a weekend with the goal of working to eliminate this sickness, as best as we can, on our see HATE CRIMES page 14
