by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer A new Seattle City Council was sworn in January 4, the first one elected under the new district system. Old familiar faces were gone, and bright new councilmembers sat in their places, but what the new Council means for city government is still up in the air. Four of the nine councilmembers are

new. Veterans Nick Licata, Tom Rasmussen, and Sally Clark moved on to new endeavors, and Jean Godden was defeated in the primary. Five of the nine are now women: Lisa Herbold, Kshama Sawant, Debora Juarez, Sally Bagshaw, and Lorena Gonzalez. Juarez and Gonzalez are the first Latinas ever to serve on the Seattle City Council. see new city council page 7

Alabama chief justice blocks same-sex marriages: Ignore him, federal attorneys advise

On Thursday, a coalition of organizations and individuals across Washington state who have joined together to defend longstanding anti-discrimination laws, especially for the Transgender community, calling themselves The Washington SAFE Alliance officially announced its formation. “All Washingtonians deserve to have safety and privacy,” said officials in a media release sent to Seattle Gay News by The Washington SAFE Alliance. “Safety means safety for everyone, including Transgender people.” The Washington State Legislature passed

a law in 2006 that provides protection for Transgender people against discrimination in employment, housing, credit, lending, insurance, and places of public accommodation. “Since that law was passed ten years ago, Transgender people in Washington have been able to use facilities, including restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity,” said SAFE officials. “Experiences in our own state, as well as many other states and localities across the country, show that anti-discrimination laws and policies can be successfully implemented while upholding the safety of everyone.” Currently, in several states, including our see safe alliance page 6
