by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor This year the LGBTQ equality movement seemed to go into overdrive. With more Americans than ever admitting that they know a person who is LGBTQ it has become increasingly more difficult for people with bigoted views to scapegoat the commu-
nity, openly discriminate against LGBTQ people or treat us like second-class citizens. That’s not to say that it does not happen, but it should be pointed out that it is no longer business as usual. There is a lot of work left to do before we get fair and equal treatment under the law in all 50 states. But there isn’t any way to look at 2015 and not see signs of see Top LGBTQ news page 7
Catholic newspaper names Gay couple “Persons of the Year”
A lot can happen over the course of one year. In Seattle, and in particular Capitol Hill, that statement rings true. With the skyline changing at such a quick pace and the neighborhood bursting at the seams with new mostly non-LGBTQ residents, the Hill looks, sounds, and is different now. While different doesn’t always mean bad, change is not something that most people take well, so there have been some growing pains. Still, one can’t deny that Capitol Hill remains the
city’s hub for LGBTQ nightlife and culture and continues to be home to the nonprofit organizations and social service providers our community counts on. Relations between the LGBTQ community and The Seattle Police Department have improved greatly but remain strained overall. Openly LGBTQ candidates for political office are no longer seen as unusual, however we failed to elect an LGBTQ candidate to represent us on the City Council meaning that in 2016, for the first time in over a decade, there will not be an LGBTQ person at the table.
