With picture-perfect sunsets and 120 miles of coastline caressed by crystalline seas, Maui is also home to rolling hills and the unique landscapes of the Upcountry and Haleakala. Outdoor activities abound, including world-famous windsurfing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, diving, and trail riding. Culinary and “agritourism” adventures are also plentiful for appreciating the bounty of the land. Maui is easily traversable and there’s not much you could imagine in a vacation that can’t be found on this beautiful slice of tropical paradise.

Chicago has many nicknames – the Windy City, the City of Broad Shoulders, the City that Works. But there is no doubt that the city is beautifully laid out with lots of green spaces, open parks, wonderful attractions, great cuisine, an attractive shoreline, and extremely friendly people.

Described as “New York on Valium,” Chicago is also extremely clean despite its size, being the third-largest city in the United States.

Getting to Chicago is easy, as there are many options. Two international airports – O’Hare and Midway – allow the traveler a plethora of choices as to how they want to arrive in this well-established metropolis.

Getting into the city center is a snap using the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) rail system. Color-coded for easy understanding, the CTA is simple to navigate and especially useful when traveling from one neighborhood to another. The city is made up of a patchwork of individual neighborhoods that are woven together creating the quilt that makes up Chicago. If public transportation isn’t your cup of tea, cabs are plentiful. The experienced traveler may want to download Uber or a similar app for easy taxiing across the city.

Keeping “Green” at its base (and getting greener every day), this building hosts a gymnasium, conference centers, an ever-growing library, and spaces to hold entertainers and guest speakers ranging from Billie Jean King to Coco Peru. With a long list of information and activities going on in the LGBT community, the Center on Halsted is an excellent resource of information for any traveler and receives approximately 1,000 members of the community visiting on a daily basis.

Entertainment in Boystown holds something for everyone’s taste. Trendy clubs or neighborhood pubs are readily found. Theme clubs such as Sidetrack (www.sidetrackchicago.com) hosts different themes (show tunes, retro video, divas, etc.) and videos each night – a schedule can be found on their website. Roscoe’s (www.roscoes.com) is more of a performance bar offering Burlesque and Boylesque, depending on the night.

No matter what your interest, Chicago has something to offer.

The city is full of rich history, rising (literally) from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire (1871) to the glory of two World’s Fairs (1893 and 1933) and now extending into the 21st century. just hot dogs and deep-dish pizza. Ethnic restaurants have opened all over the city, making Chicago a foodie heaven with plentiful options in every section of the city.

Breakfast eateries are varied but if staying in the Loop area, try Wildberry Café (www.wildberrycafe. com) for a large selection of fruit-topped waffles, pancakes, or crepes. Lunch in the Loop can be enjoyed at The Gage (www. thegagechicago.com), where you’ll find delicious salads and upscale comfort foods.

For dinner downtown, a great choice is Quartino Italian Restaurant (www.quartinochicago.com). Much like Italian tapas, this delicious restaurant specializes in small plates. Enjoy housemade pasta and housecured meats that will appeal to any appetite.

Sampling the delicious ravioli filled with braised pork, speck (an Italian cured meat), and fava beans, or the house fonduta (fondue) – there is no way to go wrong. Finish off the meal with a perfectly made Limoncello cocktail.

Complete the evening with a stop by the James Hotel downtown and have a cocktail at Jimmy (www.jameshotels.com/chicago/ bar-lounge/jimmy-chicago). A modern, sleek feel gives this comfortable watering hole the perfect atmosphere to see and be seen while enjoying any one of their signature drinks.

Another choice close to the downtown area is Goose Island Brewery (www. gooseisland.com). Learn how the taste of beer depends on the amount of hops put into the brewing. Enjoy good food while taking a tour of one of the two brewery locations and sampling the variety of their craft beers.

Entertainment downtown offers many varieties. Several of the most popular attractions can be found in this area. The Architecture Foundation River Cruise (www.architecture.org/tours/boat-tours) is an incredible way to see the city. Enjoy a 90-minute tour along the river as a knowledgeable docent gives information about the incredible architecture that contributes to Chicago’s skyline. This is a very popular activity, so advance tickets are suggested.

Just down the street is the world-famous Art Institute of Chicago (www.artic.edu).

Housing the greatest impressionist collection outside of France, this incredible museum offers wonderful exhibits from ancient statuary to modern eclectic. From Seurat’s famous painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grand Jatte and the works of Toulouse-Lautrec to Wood’s modern classic American Gothic and Warhol’s portrait of Mao, as well as many other recognizable masterpieces can be viewed.

Chicago is one of the top three theater cities in the United States (New York and Seattle being the other two) and the choices here are many. The Second City (www. secondcity.com) is celebrating its 50th year being part of the Windy City. This comedy troupe offers stand-up shows and improv comedy alike and has helped launch the careers of such notables as Andrea Martin and Bill Murray.

The ticket outlets are open for business. The holiday decorations are out of their boxes and ready to display, and all over the Puget Sound area people are marking their calendars in anticipation of what has become a traditional part of many holiday celebrations.

Gig Harbor’s annual Holiday Tour of Homes happens December 14 in a community well known for its amazing residential areas. And it is the only day of the year that the public is invited to take a look inside some of Gig Harbor’s most beautiful – and beautifully decorated – homes. This is the 18th annual tour, and it features a variety of homes and decorating approaches.

Celebrating 40 Years!

This explains the area’s frequent comparisons to the Pacific Northwest, aside from cloudy skies and damp weather. But it got even greener and more appealing as my journey shifted up north to the remote Derry region, speckled with small towns and sheep farms. Northern Ireland doesn’t scream “luxury vacation,” yet I strongly recommend it for travelers wanting a genuine Irish experience, which Dublin can only deliver in morsels. And here’s the most interesting part: although you’re in Ireland, you’re really on land governed by the United Kingdom, so it’s like being in two places at once. If considering a future trip to Northern Ireland, visit www.discovernorthernireland.com for further information and planning assistance. Here are my tips for traveling to this amazing destination.

GETTING THERE From Seattle, visitors headed to Northern Ireland can connect directly from several European airports to Belfast, which has the bulk of incoming international flights. However, you can also take the train from Dublin, called the Enterprise. The journey from Dublin’s Connolly Station allows for magnificent scenery of the eastern seaboard of Ireland and quaint farming villages along the way, before arriving at Belfast’s Central Station. The trip is just over two hours and costs around 45 euros one way for First Plus seating (coach would be less). You could also take a cab, which

connects the two cities – it’s a bit costly, but surprisingly won’t break the bank and takes about 90 minutes. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have open borders, permitting travelers to go between the two without passport or immigration processing. BELFAST Belfast is the largest city and administrative capital of Northern Ireland, but don’t expect a metropolis. It’s slightly smaller than Seattle, with fewer than 600,000 resi-

dents in the urban spread. Although its history is gloomy, Belfast is fast becoming a major European destination for leisure and business travelers, as it modernizes some of its neighborhoods and undergoes a nearcomplete makeover.

The Queen’s Quarter district is considerably inviting, safe, and upbeat. Built around the reputable Queen’s University of Belfast, it offers students and visitors a cool variety of restaurants, pubs, theaters, coffee shops, and the 28-acre Botanic Gardens, where many locals jog or ride their bikes on early mornings. For accommodations, Malone

Lodge (www.malonelodgehotelbelfast. com) is a contemporary hotel wedged between two- to four-story brick apartment buildings, with quick access to the college and surrounding sites. Rooms have a reasonable amount of space with desks, wall-mounted flat-panel TVs, large mirrors, complimentary WiFi and bottled water, and private bathrooms with glassframed showers. The lobby is elegantly furnished and service is friendly. Malone Lodge has won several accolades, including Belfast Hotel of the Year.

There isn’t a big Gay scene in Belfast, yet one nightclub to put on your list is the Kremlin (www.kremlin-belfast.com), which got worldwide exposure two years ago after pop star Justin Bieber dropped in following the 2011 MTV European Music Awards. Kremlin has everything from live DJs to themed parties to drag queen nights in a chic space. Also try the Mynt (www.myntbelfast.com), in the Cathedral Quarter, or Union Street Bar & Restaurant and its sister establishment, The Shoe Factory, both inside a former Victorian shoe manufacturing facility (www.unionstreetpub.com). For a great sit-down dinner, I highly recommend The Barking Dog Restaurant (www.facebook.com/TheBarkingDogRestaurant). It boasts a menu with meat and fresh fish entrees, homemade pastas and risottos, hearty burgers, salads, and regional draft beer in a cozy, warm dining room with a lively atmosphere. Belfast is well noted for having been the Titanic’s departure point and today the city has devoted an entire district to it called the Titanic Quarter, an ambitious 185acre waterfront development with a visitor center, film studios, hotel, and the two year-old Belfast Institute of Further and

die for. Finished with a steamed rice pudding and fine cheese plate, it was easily my favorite meal from this trip. Nearby was a close second for best meal, Custom House (http://customhouserestaurant.com). The two-level establishment, pub below and restaurant on top, served the biggest piece of perfectly cooked salmon I’ve had in years with sautéed vegetables and garlic fries (garlic potatoes sliced or cut in various methods according to each chef).

A third consideration would be Quaywest Wine Bar & Restaurant (www.quaywestrestaurant.com), a double-story wine bar and dining attraction with the usual meat and fish specialties, yet they also whip up tasty chicken curries with steamed jasmine rice and fresh salads, all in a fun ambiance. For post-dinner drinks, Envy (www. facebook.com/envy.derry) is the only Gay dance club in town and gets going around 10 o’clock, located at one end of Strand Road.

Sandinos (www.sandinos.com), a rustic pub with live music upstairs, is said to be Gay-friendly, although I was probably the only non-hetero customer on the night I visited. Still, everyone there, from the staff to fellow guests, was very polite.

Derry does have hotels in the city, but I based my stay about a half-hour from town at the Roe Park Resort (www.roeparkresort.com), a splendid multi-star resort deep in the lush, green Roe Valley, where a recent Dracula movie was filmed and which is occasionally used as a backdrop for TV’s Game of Thrones. The hotel is attached to a major golf course and features two restaurants, a spa, a bar, and a lavishly decorated lobby. Rooms included all the essentials – flat-panel TVs, drawers, desks, firm beds, full closets, spacious restrooms, and frontside views of the gorgeous landscape (trees, hills, farms).

Note: Driving from Belfast to Derry, about 90 minutes by car, affords you a memorable drive along the Causeway Coastal Route, where you can stop for photos at the adorable town of Glenarm and then have scones with hot tea at the Londonderry Arms Hotel (www.glensofantrim.com) in Carnlough. Game of Thrones viewers should definitely plan on a visit to the Dark Hedges, a stretch of road tented by mysterious-looking trees, called the King’s Road in the show, where Arya and Gendry are seen riding in the back of a cart.

For waterfront accommodations, you’ll be fully satisfied at the RiverPlace Hotel (www.riverplacehotel.com) that lies right on the Willamette. WHAT ELSE TO DO The Rose City has been in the national spotlight for its starring role in Portlandia, an IFC (Independent Film Channel) series with Saturday Night Live alum Fred Armisen and Sleater-Kinney guitarist-turnedactress Carrie Brownstein. Portland’s coffee culture rivals Seattle’s, and one chain worthy of a visit is Barista with three shops, including a downtown setup (529 S.W. 3rd Ave.) and an always-busy cafe in the Pearl District (539 N.W. 13th Ave.). Skilled baristas, imported coffee from around the globe, and trendy spaces to work, read, or socialize is a winning combination for this local chain, which served the best cup of pour-over coffee I’ve had outside the Emerald City. Another shop to try is Case Study Coffee Roasters (802 S.W. 10th Ave.), across from the Multnomah County Central Library. Their drip coffee was really bitter, so if that’s not to your taste ask for an Americano instead, but definitely stay and enjoy the polished, comfy interior while people-watching.

Keeping the Stonewall spirit alive New comic book is a great way to share our history with youth THE STONEWALL RIOTS MICHAEL TROY & DAVID CABRERA (Bluewater; 32 pp) Bluewater Productions is releasing a new comic book biography this week on the history of the Gay pride movement, called The Stonewall Riots.

In June 1969, police raided a Gay bar called The Stonewall, in New York City’s Greenwich Village. This is historically agreed as the catalyst of the modern, militant Gay rights movement. Facing persecution, prosecution, and a violation of their civil rights, the community was mad as hell and they weren’t going to take it any more.

The events at Stonewall lead to riots and demonstrations to open the dialogue and fight for basic human rights.

Bluewater Productions is proud to present The Stonewall Riots, a detailed account of the movement that started with Stonewall and continues to this day with annual Gay pride celebrations worldwide to commemorate the brave efforts of the community. QU33R had its genesis in an all-color comic zine called THREE, which featured three stories by three creators (or teams of creators) per issue. Rob Kirby published three installments of THREE annually from 2010 to 2012, and the series did well, garnering not only an Ignatz nomination for Outstanding Anthology or Collection but also earning Rob the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant in 2011.

Producing the anthology was immensely gratifying, says Rob, but featuring just three

comics and publishing only once per year meant a lot of cartoonists weren’t getting the exposure they deserved. The publishing opportunities for Queer cartoonists and subject matter are still limited even today, and Rob longed for a wider distribution than he was able to manage on his own. He approached Northwest Press about doing a bigger compendium of all-new work.

While THREE was happening, Justin Hall was preparing his book No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics, which Fantagraphics published in the summer of 2012. No Straight Lines traced the history of Queer comics from their humble beginnings in the late 1960s to the present.

The book was a whopping, award-winning success. Rob got to thinking that a followup volume – a sort-of-sequel focusing on all-new work – would seal the deal, informing the world at large that we are still here, still Queer, and still producing fresh and innovative work. He wanted to include not only several Queer comics veterans, but also some fresh new faces and a few folks who haven’t necessarily belonged to the orthodox “Queer comics scene” but have been doing non-heteronormative work all along.

From here pick up the public access Kapalua Coastal Trail, which leads to some of the most breathtaking coastal views imaginable. Oneloa Beach and the tide pools of Hawea Point are not to be missed. Crashing waves, unbelievably blue waters, sugary white sand, and distant surfers will provide an unforgettable Maui memory.

The Ka’anapali Beach Walk winds through prime tourist territory; most resorts are side-by-side dotting the entire stretch. Early risers will love this area for a jog or morning swim. If lounging poolside is your style, get outside early before the chairs are all snapped up and the sun gets too intense (lahaina does mean “cruel sun,” after all). The restaurants are hip and the activities intriguing, including tennis, golf, water sports, sushi lessons at Japengo, or the “Drums of the Pacific” luau. The Hyatt contains its own set of shops, including a boutique Macy’s that reportedly sells more bathing suits per square foot than any other in the country.

Even wildlife tours are available: the resort proudly cares for its own family of exotic swans, warm-weather penguins, cranes, flamingos, and parrots. DAY TRIP: LANA’I West Maui offers advantageous proximity to the island of Lana’i. Once home to acres of pineapple plantations, Lana’i now concerns itself primarily with tourism, welcoming mainland, foreign, and interisland tourists. Lana’i can best be described as a fascinatingly private place balancing small-town life and hospitality. Only approximately 3,000 people call the island home. With its unspoiled beaches, misty upper ridge, abundant wildlife, and miles of abandoned pineapple fields, it’s hard not to worry that it will become overdeveloped.

The 140-square-mile island was once almost entirely owned by Dole Pineapple; today it is owned by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. Residents regard Ellison with cautious optimism as he plans to make Lana’i more self-sufficient by reintroducing farming and making civic improvements, many of which are already under way.

So, what to do when you get there? First on the list, give in to complete and total relaxation. Ferries run from Lahaina to Lana’i and are relatively inexpensive (Expeditions Ferry, 808-661-3756). You can also fly on Island Air. There are just three places to stay on Lana’i; shuttles at the ferry dock will whisk you off to your destination of choice.

Cozied up to the shimmering Hulopo’e Bay is the Four Seasons at Manele Bay (www.fourseasons.com/manelebay). Nothing is more indulgent than lying on an outdoor sofa on the edge of the property’s manicured lawn, gazing out at nothing but ocean as far as the eye can see. You’ll truly believe you’ve found paradise, which is a feeling the Four Seasons excels at delivering but is particularly prevalent on Lana’i.

If you’re planning a destination birthday or special event, consider a private oceanside massage at the resort’s top-notch spa. For dining onsite, there are multiple restaurants including outposts of Nobu and One Forty.

Shuttle service runs frequently to the Four Seasons Lodge at Ko’ele (www.fourseasons.com/koele), which resembles a regal plantation house lined with tall trees and a decidedly English feel.

For fun and exploration, we suggest taking an island tour with Rabaca’s Limousine Service (808-565-6670). Their fleet of vehicles and expert drivers will show you parts of the island an average visitor might never see. The Garden of the Gods, Hawaiian petroglyphs, and the difficult terrain of Polihua Beach are best discovered with a native Hawaiian to share their knowledge.

You’ll drive through Lana’i City, one of the most enchanting small towns anywhere on earth with one gas station, one K-12 school, a tiny community college, and a handful of restaurants. Here you’ll find the adorable 10-room Hotel Lana’i (866-971-2782), which offers an alternative to the two Four Seasons properties. During the day, you can explore the island’s rustic backcountry on a fantastic horseback excursion from The Stables at Ko’ele. You can also book an underwater adventure such as “snuba” with Trilogy Ocean Sports (808-874-5649). A safe beginner’s underwater sport, snuba is a perfect fusion of snorkeling and scuba and only takes a few minutes to learn. Just ask the concierge anywhere you stay in Maui or Lana’i – there will never be a shortage of experiences to be had.
