The show, which opened Thanksgiving weekend, is a cornucopia of seasonal treats – some outstanding serious music, some truly outrageous skits, a couple of out-and-out misfires, and some gently updated holiday classics. Muppets still make a rainbow connection

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer The Muppets Now Playing Gary (Jason Segel) lives in Smalltown with his younger brother, Walter. He’s in love with beautiful schoolteacher Mary (Amy Adams). Together, the trio is heading to Hollywood to visit the fabled Muppet Studios, the legendary home of Kermit the Frog, Fozzie the Bear, Miss Piggy, and all of the rest of the famous entertainers both Gary and (especially) Walter share a special affinity for.

It is there they learn that oil billionaire Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) intends on leveling Muppet Studios in order to get to the oil bubbling within the ground below.

Not wanting to see this happen, Gary, Walter, and Mary seek out Kermit, persuading him to bring the estranged group of Muppets back together to put on one last show

and save their collective legacy. It is a journey of discovery. It is a journey of hope. It is – for one of this trio, at least – a journey that will take them right into the lap of destiny, showing that rainbows do exist and the magic store is still open to anyone who truly believes in the impossible.

The Muppets is an awful lot of fun – that fact is unmistakable. Much like this summer’s animated winner Winnie the Pooh, this return visit of a group of timeless characters who found themselves just a tiny bit outside the mainstream consciousness is a joy in almost every sense of the word. Seeing Kermit and company put The Muppet Show back on is undeniably awesome, and for any fan of Jim Henson’s legendary creations, this is one motion pic-

Hugo Now Playing Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) lives in the walls of the Paris train station. The 12-yearold, much like his late clock-making father (Jude Law), is something of a mechanical genius, and with his drunken uncle Claude (Ray Winstone) mysteriously away, it is up to him to make sure all of the station’s clocks run with their usual precision. To do so, he must avoid the constant badgering of the facility’s chief inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen), whose main joy in life is ridding the massive building of orphans by taking them away to the orphanage.

But Hugo isn’t just intent on making sure the clocks continue ticking. He is also consumed with a passion to rebuild a broken automaton his father once discovered in a museum’s attic. He is sure that by fixing it, he will reveal a final message from his dearly departed dad, that its words will give him some sort of reason as to why these troubles have befallen him and help the lad discover his life’s purpose. What he does not know is that this quest will also lead him to the mysture that simply cannot be missed.

All the same, it must be admitted this new adventure (the group’s first cinematic sojourn since 1991’s relatively forgettable Muppets from Space), does take a bit of time to hit its stride. It spends a good 20 minutes introducing us to humans Gary and Mary and potential new Muppet Walter, giving them center stage for a great deal of the narrative’s initial setup. While nothing here is bad, per se (it must be admitted the opening musical number and early trek through a dilapidated Muppet Studios are both exceedingly well done), that doesn’t make the opening act of the film any less slow. As one pintsized member of my preview audience loudly proclaimed, “Where are the Muppets?” – a statement I couldn’t exactly hold against them as I was sitting there thinking the exact same thing.

But things do pick up as soon as Kermit arrives, and the moment he hooks back up with Fozzie and a montage reminiscent of The Muppet Movie is bravely suggested, the picture noticeably begins to gather momentum. Sure, the focus on Gary and Mary can at times feel out of place, but when the Muppets take center

stage, the film achieves a rollicking energy and whimsy.

The last 30-40 minutes are easily the best, as Segel and fellow writer Nicholas Stoller’s (Get Him to the Greek) script finally takes flight and becomes just the kind of Muppet extravaganza the group’s creator would have been proud of. A couple of the musical numbers had me in absolute stitches (a group of chickens in particular having me clucking in such outright glee I was positive my belly was about to explode). It’s one great moment after another, everything culminating in a perfectly self-aware way that holds so true to Henson’s legacy I almost couldn’t believe my eyes.

It will be interesting to see how The Muppets ends up performing with general audiences. The pacing problems and lack of early focus are undeniable, and the potential for the early portions to put younger audience members to sleep is definitely there.

But all in all, Segel has done a marvelous job bringing back Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and all the rest to the big screen, and if this movie is even a modest hit, I imagine a sequel will be a foregone conclusion. “Mahna mahna,” indeed.

The Muppets in The Muppets

Based on the beloved novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s (Shutter Island, The Departed) 3D adaptation Hugo is at times a visual and emotional marvel that moved me to euphoric tears. Its sensational final 30 minutes are a celebration of the cinematic medium, a jovial harkening to the days of silent film and childlike imagination that speaks to the very best of who we are. It is a miraculous achievement that Hugo, during this home stretch, engages on levels and in ways few other films can admit to, and as such, it makes a decided case to be considered as one of the year’s finest achievements.

Yet there are issues. Scorsese and screenwriter John Logan (Rango, The Aviator) is not entirely successful in translating Selznick’s prose to the big screen. The entire subplot involving the inspector’s never-

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer The Man in the Newspaper Hat Odd Duck Studio Through December 17 Sometimes, an upcoming production looks to be an extra-special treat, partly due to the excitement of the idea presented in the play, or the pedigrees and experience of those who will be part of the cast and/or crew. Such an expectation was created for the independently produced play, The Man in the Newspaper Hat. The idea of the play, written by Hayley Heaton, was to detail visits between Elizabeth Bishop, a noted poet of her time sometimes referred to as a “poet’s poet,” and Ezra Pound, a poet noted not only for his adept use of language preceding and introducing modern American poetry, but for being branded by and vilified for his powerful WWII pro-Fascist Italy and anti-Semite sentiments.

Pound was charged with treason but was declared mentally unfit to stand trial. He spent the next 12 years in a mental hospital, St. Elizabeth’s, where he wrote and continued to publish. During that time, Bishop secured a post as poetry consultant for the Library of Congress and could conceivably have visited Pound at the hospital. She wrote a seminal piece entitled “Visits to St. Elizabeth’s” that refers to Pound.

to try to coax him away from his fascist convictions. The possibility of some great arguments and verbal sparring were set.

The pedigree of director Katrin Hilbe includes extensive international credits (including opera, as Hilbe assistant-directed multiple operas in Germany). Hilbe also has a focus on performance art, combining multiple disciplines. Heaton herself is a published poet. One of the two actors, David S. Klein, has been a frequent performer in the Seattle area for many years.

Ultimately, the expectations were dashed, first and foremost by a script that completely failed to deliver. Heaton’s dialogue is stilted and unconvincing. There are no arguments of compelling larger-than-human scale. There is no clearly articulated, wellreasoned argument of any kind. In fact, it’s almost impossible to determine the personalities of the two characters or their abilities regarding language, since the dialogue is muddy and suggestive rather than pointed and distinct.

Klein does his best to rescue the portrayal of Pound. He is as clear as he can be regarding Pound’s motivations, though there is nothing he can really do to create clarity where none is provided to him.

His acting partner in this two-hander, Lisa Keeton, is mismatched for this production. She is unable to portray any clear reason why her character would want to meet over and over again with this man, and never seems to be successful in talking with him about poetry, or gaining any insight

Beasley’s Christmas Party a sure-fire family favorite

Beasley’s Christmas Party Taproot Theatre Through December 30 Taproot Theatre is presenting a timeless story that actually has never been staged before. Beasley’s Christmas Party is a Booth Tarkington short story that was only recently (in 2008) translated into a theatrical script by C.W. Munger. Yet it feels like a classic holiday play, similar to It’s a Wonderful Life.

cian almost everyone likes! David Beasley is a small-town politician who has enough stature to run for governor of his state. Yet, he’s also another anomaly. He’s a man of few words. So few words that he has no policy positions that anyone can really quibble with. He appears to be a confirmed bachelor who lives by himself.

Someone with a grudge against him – a local farmer with a nasty disposition – thinks he’s found out some dirt that will take Beasley out of the race. He drags the local newsman to spy on Beasley, who is having what the farmer describes as a posh Christmas party. What they see is Beasley talking to people who aren’t there, and suddenly he looks like he’s lost his mind.

The whole story, however, is that Beasley has taken and adopted a severely handicapped child, the offspring of very close friends who died. The child has a huge imagination and has created bunches of imaginary friends. Beasley indulges the boy by treating his imaginary friends as real people, greeting them, shaking their imaginary hands, and even dancing with them. Far from causing a scandal, the news could only bolster his beloved image.

Directed by Scott Nolte, a small cast of four – Frank Lawler, Don Brady, Lisa Peretti, and Aaron Lamb – play all the roles. Lawler has a narratorstyle role and remains the same person throughout, while the others fill in every other role. Quick costume changes, voices projected

from behind the stage, and other stage tricks allow for these character switches, mostly with a minimum of fuss. Occasionally, the changes are a bit convoluted, creating a wish for maybe another body or two on stage, just to make it flow a little quicker. Nolte reports that C.W. Munger, though, did the play with only three cast members!

You may note that there is no child listed.

In this production, the child is represented by a bunch of blankets in a small pull-wagon. While that suspension of disbelief can work for many, others may long for a real boy. Peretti supplies his voice from backstage when the little guy is supposed to speak.

The year is 1909 and the place is smalltown Indiana. Set and sound designer Mark Lund does his usual magic, creating a simple yet sweet set for a Victorian home with a back parlor from which wonderful piano music emanates. Peretti and Lamb play real piano back there, enhancing the old-timey feeling, with Peretti’s lovely voice on some favorite Christmas carols. Suitable costumes by Sarah Burch Gordon and lighting

This is a 90-minute production with no intermission and is certainly an option for the entire family, with children best over about age 6, just for patience’s sake. If you’re looking for a new family favorite, this is sure-fire holiday fare.

A holiday hangover with a Ho

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor Everyone’s favorite songstress/comedian ‘ho – Wendy Ho, to be exact – wants you to have a holiday hangover with her at Neighbours Seattle (1509 Broadway) on December 28.

This isn’t the first time Wendy Ho has been to Seattle, she performed a holiday show last year that left the audiences in stitches as she sang her way through tunes that range from raunchy to funny to Oprah Winfrey.

“I love Seattle,” Ho told Seattle Gay News.

“I’m so glad it has become another city that I get to frequent. There’s always something new happening there and I’m excited about all the waves of things that have started there and trickled down to the rest of the country.

Ingenuity is a word that I value, and it sho’ do live up in dis place!”

Ticket sales from the show go to benefit the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Abbey of Saint Joan.

“I think they [The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence] are a bunch of nasty sluts and I love them,” she said. “We share a mutual cause in that we are here to free others from

shame by embracing and celebrating the divine that lives in all of us, whether that’s divine sexuality, divine humor, divine irreverence – its all good, embraced, accepted.”

“The fact that they do all of it to give back to their community is the yummy goat cheese on a cracker,” said Ho. Ho – who is not a drag queen, but a biological woman who is one part comedian and one part vocalist – said that audiences can expect to see “lewd storytelling, singing and belting for baby Jesus, spitfire raps, and shock waves of laughter.”

All three of her albums will be represented: The Gospel According to Ho, Number 2, and Yes, I’m a Ho! “I want your readers to know that in the spirit of Christmas, giving someone the gift of Ho is the gift that keeps on ho-ing,” she joked. “So buy my music!”

Grammy nominations: West leads, Seattle acts nab three

of Gaga and Rihanna, but neither of their albums is even a contender for the year’s best. Better records by West, Bon Iver, Taylor Swift, Alison Krauss & Union Station, and Paul Simon would’ve at least made the category somewhat credible.

Gaga, in a fluffy black dress with a giant bow and panda-like eyes, and over-the-top country duo Sugarland made a mess of “You and I” to close out the televised special. It

The American rapper edged the British singer-songwriter by one, leading the nominations for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards with seven. Adele collected six, as did rock band Foo Fighters and pop star Bruno Mars.

But Adele will likely outshine West when the actual hardware is handed out February 12, especially since she’s up for three of the four most coveted trophies – Record, Album, and Song of the Year. West’s “All of the Lights,” written by a collaborative team, goes head-to-head with Adele for Song of the Year.

Nominations in the four General Field categories – the three already mentioned and Best New Artist – were announced live on a special Grammy concert on Wednesday night. Lady Gaga opened the show with a performance of “Marry the Night” that was more freakish than it was enjoyable.

Still, she’s Lady Gaga, and whatever she does gets our attention.

Nicki Minaj, who earned an expected Best New Artist nod, unveiled the nominations for Record of the Year, which included the memorizing “Holocene” by Bon Iver, and four predictable pop-rock numbers: Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” Mars’ “Grenade,” Katy Perry’s “Firework,” and Mumford & Sons’ “The Cave.”

Rihanna, via satellite from the O2 Arena in London, provided the most festive per-

formance of the one-hour telecast by singing her newest single “We Found Love” to a packed stadium full of bouncy fans who were spritzed with confetti.

Besides Adele and West, nominees for Song of the Year went to Bon Iver’s “Holocene,” Mars’ “Grenade,” and Mumford & Sons’ “The Cave.”

Country artist Jason Aldean, who spoke with Seattle Gay News a few years ago when his career was just on the rise, performed an interesting duet of his single “Dirt Road Anthem” with hip-hop biggie Ludacris. Aldean received his first three Grammy nominations, including one for Best Country Album (My Kinda Party).

Mars, whose ego appeared to be larger than his smile throughout the night, announced the five nominees for Best New Artist. In the running with Minaj are Bon Iver, The Band Perry, J. Cole, and Skrillex.

The fifth nominee in that bunch was the shocker – no one had Skrillex on their predictions list. A dubstep-electronic performer, his Seattle concert a few months ago was completely sold-out. Skrillex, by the way, received five total nominations.

Perry, in a rosy pink dress with partially shaven head and the other half dyed to match her gown, unveiled the nominations for Album of the Year, which were a disappointment. Adele’s 21, though not consistent enough to be a masterpiece, is at least well-written and owned the charts in 2011, but the rest of the pack seems out of place: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light, Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans, and Rihanna’s Loud. Look, I’m a fan

On the bright side, congratulations are in order for three Seattle acts who earned Grammy nods. Death Cab for Cutie is once again vying for Best Alternative Music Album (Codes and Keys), and Fleet Foxes nabbed their first for Helplessness Blues in the Best Folk Album category and will compete with another Emerald City artist, Eddie Vedder (Ukulele Songs).

Ain’t Misbehavin’ a lot of fun

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Imagination Theater Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed Imagination Theater, the taping of Harry Nile and Sherlock Holmes mysteries at Kirkland Performance Theater, November 21 for KIXI radio station. The scripts by M. G. Elliott, A Secret Mission and The Three Deaths of Erasmus Crowe, were good additions to the genre.

Mercy liked to listen to the pleasing radio voice of director Jim French. Jay Green was convincing as Harry Niles and Dr. Watson.

John Patrick Lowrie really sounded like Holmes. He has been the longest-running radio actor in that role. Lowrie’s wife, Ellen McLain, was spooky as Mrs. Warrenden. John announced proudly that Ellen has been nominated for the best female voice in a video game for her portrayal of the evil computer GLaDOS in Portal 2. It was fun to watch the sound effects being done by Frank Rosin and Curtis Takehashi.

Ain’t Misbehavin’ Mercy ate up the Tony Award-winning musical from New York City at Jazz Alley, November 22. The voices of Curtis Farrow, Vivian Jett, Ron Lucas, Famecia Ward, and Dawn Driver were luscious, and their harmonies were tight. Darius Frowner’s keyboards were delicious. Drums by Milo Pe-

terson were driving. Larry Holloway’s bass was funky.

It was a night of Fats Waller swing tunes.

The upbeat title song opened. “Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do,” a song associated with Billie Holiday, followed. “Honeysuckle Rose” was a sweet slow down.

“Handful of Keys” picked up the pace.

“I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” was slow and soulful. “How Ya Baby,” “Jitterbug Waltz,” “The Ladies Who Sing With the Band” and “Yacht Club Swing” returned to the fast speed.

“When the Nylons Bloom Again” was slow and slinky. “Cash for Your Trash” and “Off Time” went back to the upbeat. “The Joint is Jumpin’” was one of Fats Waller’s most famous songs. “Entr’acte,” “Spreadin’ the Rhythm Around,” and “Lounging at the Waldorf” were also fast. “The Viper’s Drag” was a slow change of pace. “Mean to Me” was another song associated with Billie Holiday. “Your Feets Too Big” and “That Ain’t Right” picked it up again.

“Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now” was slow and romantic. “Find Out What They Like” and “Fat and Greasy” returned to the upbeat. The singers dedicated the soulful “Black and Blue” to Lena Horne and Joe Frazer. Two of Waller’s most well-known songs, “I’m Going to Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie” closed well.

West Side Story a great restoration of a great musical

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer The 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Blu-ray of the 1961 film of West Side Story is a winner, well worth the extra price. Not only is the sound so good that you can actually hear the room in which the music was recorded, but the picture is also super-sharp, with vibrant saturated colors and a complete lack of flaws. In fact, the only thing at all dated is the slightly old-fashioned manner of a few of the special effects (colors superimposed or parts of the picture purposefully fuzzied-out to focus elsewhere). In all other ways, the Blu-ray disc is state-of-the-art.

Special features sometimes add little, but such is not the case this time. For instance, one can view the film in a mode that gives superb commentary on the choreography of Jerome Robbins by members of the original stage cast (such as Chiquita Rivera) and others such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, other choreographers, and Leonard Bernstein’s daughter. This commentary comes on before each choreographed number, talks one through the number, and then begins the dance again without the comments. Far from deadly, these remarks truly illuminate the show and deepen one’s appreciation for the stunning results.

Less illuminating, but of great interest nonetheless are the comments on each song by lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who was still

a teenager when he was working with Bernstein and Robbins on this, his first successful musical.

One accesses his remarks as one of the “extras,” whereas the comments on the choreography come as an initial choice to make when pressing “play.” Most interesting are Sondheim’s self-criticisms about the lyrics that are too “writerly” (“I Feel Pretty”), as opposed to more natural speech (“Maria”).

So far, everything I’ve mentioned (plus a “Music Machine” option that allows one to skip all dialogue, hitting just the musical numbers) is from the first Blu-ray disc. But this is a four-disc set. The second disc is a standarddefinition DVD, with special features and the “Music Machine” feature. There is also a “Tribute CD” with eight of the songs covered by the likes of Julie Andrews, Tuck & Patti, Gloria Estefan, and others.

But the clincher, the reason anyone at all interested in this great film must get this

ers just walking down West 61st Street, trying out different moves and gestures, to find which seemed real and yet could be worked into dance movements. One gets a sense of the physical stress and pains the dancers experienced working under Robbins’ extreme demands for hours, even days of re-takes.

The only element I found lacking was sufficient coverage of the singers who dubbed almost all the actors’ songs. One does see a little of the great Marni Nixon. She had to dub all the songs that Natalie Wood had in fact recorded after the scenes were shot. (Usually the actor lip-synchs these scenes to the pre-recorded music.) But there is almost nothing beyond naming the other singers. We do get to hear what Natalie Wood sounded like. She’s not that bad, although Nixon’s voice and technique are vastly superior. The dubbing throughout is near perfection.

These extras, along with the superb technical quality of the discs, made me change my view of this film. As a freshman at Columbia College in NYC, I saw the original stage production twice on Broadway. When the film came out, I felt it lacked the intensity and excitement of the stage show; I liked all the original performers better than the film actors. Now, 50 years later, I’m happy to say I have come around to a most enthusiastic appreciation of the film. It won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and it deserves them to this day. The loving care with which this anniversary edition was prepared does honor to a great movie of, for me, the greatest American musical ever created.

continued from page 28 ending quest to capture Hugo gets old far too fast, and there are moments where the movie dips into a state of juvenile sentimentality more suited to a Nickelodeon or Disney Channel sitcom than to high drama.

More so, while I was never bored by the proceedings, it does take the movie a bit of time to hit its stride, and as wonderful as Hugo and Isabelle’s friendship climactically proves to be, getting there took a tad more effort than it needed to.

But no filmmaker, not even James Cameron with Avatar, has used the 3D process in such a profound and intimate way. There were moments where I could actually feel myself disappearing within the frame, becoming one with the wispy bits of dust and spiraling layers of smoke filtering through it. This is as immersive a motion picture as any I have ever had the pleasure to experience, and if this is truly the future of 3D as it pertains to cinema, then I might finally have to reconsider my reticence toward the technology.

More than that, though, Scorsese has found a way to extrapolate on his love for the camera and the cinematic medium in a way that speaks universally to the child within us all. Hugo is more than a history lesson; it is a love letter, beautifully conveying the importance and significance of the early days of moviemaking and lovingly showcasing how those first moving images of trains, crowds mingling, and men journeying to the moon shaped the filmmakers of today. It enraptures the soul, engages the intellect, and connects in an emotional way that had me mesmerized. I could not look away from the screen, and the smile never left my face during the third act’s bit of blissful delirium.

Yet do not misunderstand, what makes all this borderline brilliant is that Scorsese never forgets about his characters, never loses sight of Hugo’s story or how his journey plays upon Méliès and his family. What is discovered comes from a character-driven place that is as distinct as it is wonderful, adding to the film’s innate power to charm and to beguile and proving once again the best stories are always the ones you can relate to on a personal level.

This review could go on forever. There is so much more to talk about, so much just on a technical front – whether it be Howard Shore’s (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) score, Robert Richardson’s (Inglourious Basterds) cinematography, or Dante Ferretti’s (The Black Dahlia) eye-popping production design – I don’t even know where to begin. I could go on about the intricacies of the script, the delicate and subtlety complex nature of the majority of the performances (although Cohen did get on my nerves at times), or how Moretz’s use of the word “clandestine” made me shiver in absolute giggly glee.

The point is that, even with its flaws, Hugo is such a wondrous achievement on so many different levels that trying to go into detail in regard to them all borders on impossible. For me, the end result is that Scorsese has manufactured a motion picture that articulates everything I love and adore about cinema, but has done so in a way that also speaks to the greater angels within us all and to the better people each and every one of us hopes on some level to be. It is, in a word, sublime, and here’s hoping general audiences will take the time to discover its heartwarming magic for themselves.

Still, their choralography remains true to form as they perform a medley of Christmas favorites, and even change Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” to “50 Gays Who Live in Poulsbo”!

Yes, it’s that time of year again, when Spudds and Gay chorus members and game shows hit the stage all at once at Theatre Off Jackson, the putative home of Ham for the Holidays. This is the 11th iteration of their holiday pun-happy hijinks. Lisa Koch and Peggy Platt are funny ladies with chameleon-like abilities to turn into characters from Michele Bachmann to Wynotta Spudd, and from Kirstie Alley to Euomi Spudd.

It’s become the un-holiday holiday tradition for a lot of folks who need a laugh and some time away from what is often a huge stressor. Perhaps a little on the blue side for young children, the show is still good family fare for tweens and up.

Aided by Lisa’s brother David, who gives them the needed directorial eye, they create new spoofs every year. Their costuming is perfection supported by incredible wigs that help them completely change what they look like. (Credits for costumes go to Kelly McDonald and wigs to Akemi Hart.) Act 1 starts with the Polka Dots performing for a mortician’s convention. The Polka Dots are headed by Dorothy (so you know where “Dot” came from, and she just loves polka) and accompanied by Ludmilla. Ludmilla’s wig helped Koch looked so Russian-esque, so dour, it was side-splitting.

Accompanied by castmates D.J. Gommels and Michael Oaks, and including projections of slides of graves, caskets, and urns, the Polka Dots sing a medley of tunes devised just for the funeral industry. Apparently, services for Dot’s father were paid for in trade, you see.

The next portion of Act 1 is a game of “Who’s Your Deity,” with illustrious guests Harvey Fierstein, Kirstie Alley, and Albus Dumbledore. Whether that trio is particularly educated on religion is anyone’s guess, but this is the audience participation part of the evening, where you could be chosen to decide if the answers given by the celebrity panel are true or false. While some portions of this skit aren’t quite as delectably funny

as other parts of the show, you might even learn a thing or two. Some of the questions are weird-but-true aspects of various religions. If you’re chosen, you might even win a prize!

Costume-change time between skits is also a huge treat, as clips from Lisa Koch’s huge arsenal of weird videos are shown. See if you can recognize old celebrities making fun of themselves in Christmas specials past. Also seen on video are clips from Second City actors pretending to be celebrities in awful Christmas specials past.

Without giving away more jokes, we’ll just say you’ll hear more about the new Gay ensemble SQUEEL and be invited into the Bachmann home for a Christmas-y political visit, and last but not least, get a load of Mama Euomi’s original production of Double-wide Indemnity. If you’ve seen ACT Theatre’s recent production of Double Indemnity, it might help with the beginning of the plot, but after that, all bets are off.

Especially as Wynotta intervenes and describes to Euomi what plot changes Euomi murmured in her sleep.

SMC fans a wide variety of choices. All performances are at Benaroya Hall, the home of the Seattle Symphony, in downtown Seattle.

Two personal anecdotes: One: In this writer’s circle of friends, two SMC holiday concert philosophies dominate. One group likes to go the opening weekend, enjoy the “special guest star,” and start the holiday season with SMC. The other group likes to go to one of the very final programs to anchor Christmas week.

Both approaches work. Although the current program was “not quite ready for prime time,” as the saying goes, it certainly sent the cheering audience out and into the holiday season and the holiday mood. Some sequences, like the acclaimed “Silent Night” staging in sign language, will hit closer to home as Christmas actually nears. The guest star factor – a bonus for many on the first weekend – will fade. Either approach is fine – or any other choice. Several friends make it a simple choice: “give me a matinee and I’ll go.”

Two: Killing time before the concert, I ran into a salesclerk at Macy’s who I hadn’t seen in several years. She asked what brought me downtown. I mentioned “a Christmas concert” and, later, dinner with my concert friend. She smiled “that” smile and asked if I meant the Seattle Men’s Chorus concert. I confirmed my destination. She said she was going to buy tickets for a later concert “for my nephew” who is turning 15. I suggested it would be a fun outing (no pun intended).

She laughed and revealed that “we imagine he’ll be singing with the group in future years – might as well show him what it’s all about now.” It was a great, inclusive way to approach the program.

Cool Yule is a typical SMC concert – a lot of elements, a lot of talent, a lot of (sometimes too much) low humor. Among the musical highlights of this program were two sequences in Act One. “O Magnum Mysterium” (“O, Great Mystery”) was one of the most beautiful songs the chorus has ever performed. And it was beautifully performed – in Latin. It was quickly followed with “There Is No Rose,” a celebrating of the Virgin Mary. The chorus parted to allow nine countertenors to form a semi-circle at the top of the chorus risers. In Act Two, the serious selections again proved to be musical highlights – “When the Song of the Angels Is Stilled (The Work of Christmas Begins)” is a smashing new work that could easily become a holiday classic. The traditional “Silent Night,” performed in sign language with an amazing clarinet solo, was another show-stopping serious moment (but not quite as polished as it will be in later performances).

“O Come, All Ye Faithful” and “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” proved to be well chosen seasonal classics to open Act Two. A rambling skit – shoehorning all of TV’s annual Christmas specials into one overly complex production number – was slow to take hold, although reducing Home Alone to a single scream of anguish was a brilliant moment. The skit will undoubtedly improve as the month continues. (In exiting the twoand-a-half-hour program, one audience member complimented a chorus member.

He smiled back and spoke the truth: “We might have it together by December 23.”)

Act One opened with five “filler” selections. The “Cool Yule” title song is a longforgotten work by Steve Allen that was fun to hear, but nothing special. “(Everybody’s Waiting For) The Man With the Bag” followed – ditto. “Boogie Woogie Santa Claus,” “Jing-a-Ling, Jing-a-Ling” – ditto, ditto. “50 Kilowatt Tree,” a song-and-skit, brought Captain Smartypants center stage but was a near misfire, only because of the limited musical possibilities.

Special guest star Megan Hilty appeared toward the end of Act One, tripping on the hem of her overly elaborate gown (“a fashion disaster,” one friend termed it at intermission). The Bellevue native has done well on Broadway and stars in the upcoming TV series Smash. A lovely Christmas choice, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” showed her to be a true talent, despite the somewhat vapid stage persona.

A lovely follow-up, “There’s a Place Called Home,” again displayed fine technique. Her Act Two return showcased her in a sultry “Santa Baby” and a charming outing with “The Christmas Song,” better known from its opening lyric, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire....” Her second diva dress was a better choice but still looked borrowedfor-the-occasion. Her final, encore outing, with “Popular” from Wicked, the show that started her on her Broadway career, again showed her to be a real talent. The “special guest star” always appears at the opening holiday concerts, presumably to get the ball rolling on ticket sales, but the show has so much going on that concertgoers at subsequent shows rarely miss the hoopla.

“This Holiday” was a pleasant Christmas selection, new to most of the audience. A wonderfully funny skit, based on various misunderstandings of Broadway’s The Book of Mormon, literally stopped the show. Ethel Merman, a fun drag cameo, barged onstage presuming it was The Book Of Merman. Four nearly dressed male models thought it was The Book Of More Men. A presidential candidate thought it was … well, you get the idea.

One of SMC’s best parody song skits ended Act One. To the tune of “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” the chorus performed – and members modeled – “Walkin’ ‘Round in Women’s Underwear.” It may be the funniest skit SMC has ever pulled off.

One highlight of Act Two was a new number, “Black Christmas,” a politically charged satirical song from an African American perspective. Alas, the following sing-along, described as in the style of the Supremes and the Temptations, was a total misfire. “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” brought The Andrews Brothers back to stage center – it appears to be a new trio for the Chorus but might just be a one-time-only group. Close harmony – well done. “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” clearly delighted the smiling crowd.

A silly science skit needs more thought, but a “Hot Hanukkah” finale was an audience pleaser. A reprise of “Cool Yule” seemed to end the show, but Hilty returned with “Popular” (and her best dress) and then SMC encored (again) with “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” – a wonderful ending with terrific choreography on the risers – marred only when one chorus member took a bad fall and others seemed near tripping. Again, the show will be polished as the concerts go on.

A troupe of dancers, likewise, will get better and work as more of an ensemble.

Sometimes it seems that the Men’s Chorus simply attempts too much. It will be fun to find out what friends report from later performances. Good tickets for all remaining shows are available at (206) 388-1400 or online at www.flyinghouse.org. Check it out.
