Bob Nelson paramount vantage
by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer Bob Nelson is a Seattle icon. A stalwart of the long-running KING-TV sketch comedy series Almost Live, he was instru-
mental in helping Bill Nye become the scientific celebrity he is today with his work as a performer on Bill Nye the Science Guy and as writer on Eyes of Nye. He’s got one of those voices that anyone who’s ever seen him perform finds impossible to forget, an undeniable talent the city is proud to call one of its own. Now Nelson can add “Hollywood screenwriter” to his résumé. His first produced script, Nebraska, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alexander Payne (The Descendants; Sideways), is platforming in theaters across the United States through November. The story revolves around the curmudgeonly, taciturn Woody (Bruce Dern), a Montana resident who decides to make the trek to Lincoln, Nebraska, when he receives a sweepstakes notice in the mail saying he “may” be the winner of a million-dollar prize. Feeling forced to accompany him on this by-allaccounts-fruitless quest is his son, David see bob nelson page 7
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis bound for multiple Grammy nods by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer From Quincy Jones to Nirvana, the Emerald City has seen its share of musicians win Grammy Awards. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden also belong to this exclusive club. This year, Seattle’s hopes for Grammy gold rest on the shoulders of hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who went from local club act to internationally known artists in a matter of months. The Capitol Hill-based pair should fare well in the rap field, where they’ll undoubtedly pick up one or two nominations, but they’re also strong contenders for all four top prizes: Album, Record, and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist. It’s quite possible they’ll nab one of the Best Music Video slots as well, for “Thrift Shop,” filmed partially at Value Vil-

Judy Dench and Steve Coogan in Philomena
PHILOMENA Now showing Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) and Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) should never have met. But when the newsman is summarily sacked from his job working for Tony Blair’s government for reasons he can barely fathom, let alone stomach, he finds himself adrift looking for something to do. That’s when Philomena’s story is unceremoniously dropped see Philomena page 8
