After being dropped from American Idol in 2002 for her Internet porn past, she won a supporting role in the Broadway production of Rent and starred in touring productions of Dreamgirls and Ain’t Misbehavin’. Last year she sang with Christina Aguilera on NBC’s The Voice, where she made it to the Top Four. Her debut album will be out this fall, and she is also working on a Christmas album.

You might know him as Victor Cruz. You’ve no doubt seen him around – he’s hard to miss. Victor, the local entertainer turned recording artist, is ramping up to debut officially as VELO (pronounced “V-Low”), an out Gay Latino male who believes in power recovered.

VELO recently interviewed with SGN about his upcoming live performance, his second music video debut, and why he wants to put sexy – from a masculine perspective – in your face.

“Music sets you free,” VELO told SGN while drinking (water, not whiskey) at Neighbours Nightclub. These days he’s sacrificing little pleasures like liquor because he’s been hitting the gym hard, and it shows. “It sets the tone for how you can feel in a split second.”

Intiman rises from the dead Two splendid offerings show the embattled company has a future

So far, SGN has reviewed a solid Hedda Gabler and a strange Dirty Story, and this week we look at a sensitive, glowing production of Shakespeare’s immortal Romeo and Juliet and Dan Savage’s outrageous world premiere, Miracle! – a savage takeoff on William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker.

Both are highlights of Seattle’s 2012 theater season.

A year ago, hubris, questionable financial

decisions, and just plain bad luck caused the four-decade-old Intiman, once famously “Home of the Classics,” to shut it doors midseason. A “fuck Seattle, I’m heading to New York” artistic director (who did, indeed, depart with almost no advance notice), a new “I’ve never been an artistic director” artistic director who was in way over her head from day one, a board of trustees whose philosophy was “spend it now and they will come,” and some disastrous program choices (including an all-black production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons and a play that centered on female genital mutilation in Africa) that, to no one’s surprise, had limited appeal to Intiman’s longtime subscribers and donors – well, it ended ignobly. Intiman était mort.

But then, to the surprise of just about everyone, Intiman came back to life – with a new, talented, risk-taking artistic director, lower ticket prices (all seats $30), some serious cost-cutting moves, and an audacious rotating repertory featuring two classics and two new works.

Intiman’s Romeo and Juliet is one of the most appealing productions the two “starcrossed lovers” have ever received in Seattle. The company does make one serious mistake by flaunting the script changes: “Be prepared to be upset,” it states. Well, young suicides seem upsetting enough. Great performances from all – R & J, their parents, Friar Laurence, the nurse, the County Paris (as the Bard termed him – we usually say Count Paris now). Highest recommendation.

A ‘MIRACULOUS’ SATIRE Dan Savage’s Miracle! is undoubtedly the most offensive, most insensitive, and most scandalous play Intiman has staged in its 40-year history. And, it is fabulous. A sign above the set warns that the play is politically incorrect and will be offensive to many, especially those in the deaf and blind community. So, the sign concludes, “keep your hands shut!”

The story concerns a Gay man who had a one-night stand with a woman 20 years ago, which resulted in a child – little Helen Skeller, now 19. She went blind, deaf and mute at

18 months but she knew one word – no, not “water” (as was the case for Helen Keller), but “vodka.” Her father is now a famous drag queen who runs Seattle’s Brass Connection (charmingly known, we are told, as the “Ass Infection” in the pre-AIDS era) on Capitol Hill.

So, Helen is now a drag performer herself, wearing an electronic collar to keep her from falling off the club’s elevated stage. She steals lipstick and make-up from the other queens. In short, she is a terror, but thankfully a social worker, “Annie” Sullivan, shows up to train her. Annie is a well-adjusted Lesbian who is lusted after by the club’s female stage manager. Those who have seen The Miracle Worker will be amused by the many parodic elements here.

In Gibson’s award-winning play, Anne Sullivan teaches Helen to use her own spoon and fold her own napkin in a four-hour battle of wits and wills. Here, Annie teaches her to use her own lipstick and fold her own make-up towel.

The sold-out opening-night crowd went crazy for the satire – or else left early. When a drag queen upended a chrome bar stool in Act One and sat on one of the legs, moaning in ecstasy while “pleasuring” herself stage center, one of this writer’s friends in the University Unitarian Church walked out, semi-shouting, “Even I’ve had enough.”

(Believe it or not, it takes a lot to offend a lifelong Unitarian.)

Act One ends with Helen doing her big drag number – but she gets too near the edge of the stage and her electric-shock collar stops her. Which sends her into an epileptic seizure … anyway, it’s one of most offensive scenes ever staged in Seattle – and one of funniest this writer has ever seen. Highest recommendation. Walkouts at intermission were amazingly few, but about 20 percent of the sold-out crowd had already left by then.

A magical Illusion

Sound Theatre scores with one of Tony Kushner’s lesser-known works

THE ILLUSION SOUND THEATRE COMPANY Through August 26 You can probably assume that if someone knows playwright Tony Kushner, they know him as the writer of the six-hour-long Angels in America, which many believe is the greatest play of the 20th century. However, Kushner is still quite young – in his mid-50s – and he has written many other plays over the past three decades.

In 1988, a few years before Angels, Kushner’s play The Illusion was first produced.

Sound Theatre Company has chosen to bring it to Seattle for what may even be its Seattle premiere. Since Kushner “freely adapted” it from a 17th-century play by Pierre Corneille (L’Illusion Comique), it might not be considered entirely his own.

But his choice reflects his love of language and his penchant for blending fantasy with reality.

The play, set in 17th-century France, revolves around Pridamant (Gianni Truzzi), who has recently had a health scare. After years of estrangement from his only son (Matt Fulbright), he seeks out a sorceress and her speechless servant (Eva M. Abram and William Li) for information about how his son has fared since being disinherited.

Pridamant is shown a series of disconnected yet strangely interconnected mo-

ments, where his son appears but is known by different names. The son appears to be in love with a woman (Elinor Gunn), yet he is also involved with a servant (Hannah Mootz) and is confronted with rivals – one a nobleman (Alex Garnett), the other a “lunatic,” as Matamore (Frank Lawler) is labeled in the program. All except Matamore also change their names and circumstances, though their relationships stay similar.

The secret of Pridamant’s son’s life is revealed at the end, cementing fantasy together with fantasy, though Pridamant can finally rest easier knowing what his son’s life has been like. And although Matamore never gets to win the woman, he – and the rest of the audience – get to travel to the moon. It’s the ultimate fantastical ending.

The ensemble chosen by Teresa Thuman, artistic director of Sound Theatre Company, is a solid bunch, able to create a lovely atmosphere of magic and wonder. Truzzi is appropriately agonized yet defiant, Abram and Li are mysterious, Fulbright is leadingman-like, Gunn is leading-lady-like, Garnett is appropriately despicable-rival-like, and Lawler relishes his character’s multiple levels of crazy.

Mootz gets the best character, since the maid, even while being cheated on, has to help save the day over and over. Her flexible expressions and ability to be both funny and swift-thinking help her steal several scenes.

But the most inspiring aspects to this low-budget production lie in the wonderful technical achievements that Bryan Boyd and Suzi Tucker manage in their set design, a magical forest background with exactly appropriate mesh “windows” to allow for Tucker’s beautifully rendered projections.

Scene changes often take irritatingly long, with sometimes jarring effect, but the projections created the ability to shift seamlessly, allowing us to be transported to different settings instantly and with no fanfare.

Schaefer, eerie sound design by Lindsey Morck, and lovely costumes by Deborah Sorensen. Jami Sieber composed original music.

Celebrating 39 Years!

OLD TIMES ACT THEATRE Through August 26 ACT opened two more Pinter plays this week, adding to the panoply of Pinter plenty accessible during this one-of-a-kind opportunity to steep yourself in all things Harold.

Two full-length productions, Old Times and No Man’s Land, play only a couple of weekends, so you’ll have to move fast to take one or the other in.

Old Times is pure Pinter in its spare language, quixotic silences, and layered meanings. On the surface, a married couple is visited by the wife’s old friend. Twenty years have gone by, so there is a lot of catching up to do. There’s also some tension and competition between the friend and the husband.

Just underneath, though, is a layer of jealousy and anxiety over whether the wife is more emotionally connected to one than the other. And even deeper, there is an exploration, poetic at times, of memory and how real it is – how it can so easily be invented.

Though Pinter debuted this play in 1971, we know so much more about memory now, as scientists have learned how easy it is to trick the mind into “remembering” something that never happened. Here, he has the

friend rattle on and on about “how things used to be,” while the wife says she can barely even remember the friendship, even while acknowledging that the two used to be roommates.

Jeffrey Frace plays Deeley, the husband who appears devoted to his wife, Kate (Cheyenne Casebier), but somehow is threatened by the appearance of Anna (Anne Allgood). The three pace around the elegant living room (designed by Robert Dahlstrom) or sit on castered settees (“We sleep here. We can move them into any position – they’re on wheels!”) and sip coffee (with or without cream and sugar) in unsettled silences.

Director Victor Pappas finds the right rhythm for the piece. The beginning is light and humorous, with a bit of teasing between husband and wife. The anticipation is mild and the atmosphere more curious than tense.

The whirlwind of energy of Allgood and the tennis-match volleying of Frace is paired with the intense stillness of Casebier’s Kate. Kate almost never even reacts to their blasts of emotion, perhaps causing them to try even harder to reach her.

As the evening goes on, undertones of eroticism and competition deepen and the humor ebbs. Even a funny moment, the singing of romantic songs by Deeley and

“Besides,” he continued, “Having fun and smiling is infectious. That energy is a real thing on the dance floor. Ask any DJ, dance group, or vocalist who performs dance music inside of nightclubs – they will tell you the same thing. As entertainers we feed off the energy we get back from the crowd. If I’m not giving it I can’t expect to get any back.”

In a world where, let’s face it, the type of instant judgment that goes along with the nightclub culture that exists in venues that would book an out Gay man who is not performing in drag, didn’t show up to dance as a go-go boy, and is scheduled to sing live vocals, is very real, VELO says he is hoping to capitalize on that and, if all goes well, change a few people’s minds about sexuality, masculinity, and race relations along the way.

“Every time I perform I am making a political statement that as a Gay Latino male, I too can be visible,” he said, explaining, “I like all of the different types of Gay men that make up the spectrum of our commu-

Winning the competition on the Neighbours stage, with friends and co-workers from his then-employer Gay City, catapulted him into a whole separate category of entertainers on the Hill. Opportunity after opportunity presented itself to VELO, who suddenly was getting booked everywhere from Julia’s on Broadway and Lashes Cabaret at R-Place and Neighbours Nightclub to Elektro Pop! at Baltic Room.

In many ways, VELO told SGN, 2011 was a formative year for him – not only as an entertainer, but also as a man.

He learned valuable lessons – what some in the entertainment industry would call “paying your dues” or “putting in your time” – and the knowledge and experience he gained has changed the way he approaches live performance, production, and where he ultimately would like to see this thing go.

If you spend more than five minutes with VELO, the first thing you might notice is that he is easy on the eyes. He’s hot, and that is not something he is sorry for. “Why

should he be?” we discuss, coming to the conclusion that the time he has put in at the gym is becoming evident and that Gay men should never have to feel “bad” for looking “good.” Before you judge the guy, it is important to note that although VELO could get away with being cocky, it is just not in his nature. He’s a personable guy with a wonderful smile. In other words, when you couple that personality with how current and relevant the music he chooses to perform is, it is not difficult to see that there is a market waiting for VELO to arrive. That market is made up of Gay men who aren’t necessarily interested in all things drag – at least not all the time and all the same.

“Right now I’m working with a team of producers and writers and we’ve been recording some original music that just makes you want to dance,” VELO said, noting the change in direction that he hopes signals to club promoters, live venue managers, and the like that he is moving away from singing covers to performing original and unapologetic Gay material. “It’s feel-good music that you can’t help but move your body to.

Even the most avid non-dancer in the club will find themselves on the dance floor.”

To break free from this, VELO told SGN, “in the lyrics, at performances, and when I am recording music video I try to incorporate masculine imagery to make a statement that Gay men also can be sexy, hard, rough, and even ugly.”

“I wanna be in your face in a sexual way,” he said. “And if it is done right, it will be tactful and artistic.”

For many years VELO worked in HIV prevention and has witnessed how embedded HIV condemnation has played a role in the way some young Gay men feel about themselves, the community, and sex.

“When I talk to Gay men, be they a friend, coworker, or pretty much anyone, some of them tell me they feel weak, taken advantage of, and powerless,” said VELO, slightly changing his tone from super-excited to questioning. “Through music I want to empower Gay men to feel strong, have fun, and be bold.”

VELO says that being a Gay white male is the definition of sexy within the broader LGBTQ community. “Everyone is compartmentalized by race and there is a value that’s placed with each one,” he said. “In my music videos I am going to show that strength and boldness to send a message that no matter what you race you were born into you should feel proud and been seen and express yourself.”

“Plus, who doesn’t like to watch sexy men all up on each other?” he asks, referring to the filming of his latest video for the cover he did of David Guetta’s “Sweat.”

“With all the political changes going on in regard to sexual orientation and race, I feel like I’m combining those things and using them as a strength to deliver a message and a good time,” he concluded.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer COMPLIANCE Opens August 24 When Becky (Dreama Walker) walked into work she thought the biggest issue of the day would be the fact that someone accidentally left the freezer open the night before, leading to a bacon and pickle shortage.

But when her manager Sandra (Ann Dowd) asks her to come into her office and hands her the phone, she’s shocked and surprised to discover a voice claiming to be a police officer (Pat Healy), calmly informing her she’s a suspect in a robbery earlier that afternoon.

What happens from that point forward is one of the more shockingly disturbing stories of abuse and depravity that I’ve ever seen. Through it all I almost couldn’t help from yelling at the characters for being so obviously stupid, for doing things so beyond the pale they should have known immediately something fishy was going on. At the same time, the way this voice presents its case, the smooth way he goes from step one to step two to step three, all of it forced me to wonder if I could have been taken in just as easily – that thought alone chilling enough to make me somewhat sick to my stomach and eager to take a shower the moment the film ended.

That is the genius of writer/director Craig Zobel’s (Great World of Sound) fact-based drama Compliance. Not so much a thriller yet as terrifying as anything I’ve seen this year; definitely not a horror movie but so insidiously scary the chances I’ll be able to stop thinking about it hover around zero –

this is one fantastic motion picture. It took me places I definitely did not want to go and got me in a mindset so infuriating I was angry at myself for thinking the thoughts. It’s close to genius-level filmmaking – a claim I do not make lightly. Without question, this is one of the finest features I’ll likely see in all of 2012.

At the same time, I have almost no wish to see it again. Much like Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, this is an unsettling, dirty, and disturbing piece of cinema. It is a movie that got so thoroughly under my skin I wanted to scrape it off my hide with sandpaper – the bloody mess that would leave behind was more appealing than the dripping residue of abuse I could feel permeating every cell. There is no sweetness and light, no happy ending, nothing to feel good about, and even though punishment is enacted and apologies are made, none of them come close to erasing the pure, unadulterated evil of the grotesque events that that preceded any of it.

None of this is meant as an indictment of the film itself – it’s just me expressing my immediate sentiments as to how I’m reacting relatively soon after watching it. I mean, I’ve said on numerous occasions I feel Mungiu’s Romanian abortion drama is a masterpiece but that I’d never watch it again willingly, and yet, just the other day, I found myself drawn to the DVD and took another look at it for the first time since 2007. I was surprised by the effect it still had on me, shocked to discover I was just as captivated by it as I had been upon that initial viewing.

But the chief revelation? That I could indeed watch it twice without going insane, proving

ises) based his screenplay, so I do not have a clue how the Canadian auteur’s hyper-sexualized adaptation compares to the source COSMOPOLIS material. Is that good news? In part. This movie has passion, a kinetic drive bordering on hypnotic. This is a world similar to our own yet at the same time completely alien, the parallel energies running through the proceedings keeping me off-balance and continually on the edge of my seat. As stilted and as aloof as the dialogue and the mannerisms can be, as theatrically monotone as Cronenberg asks his cast to say their lines, there is reason to all the madness, a point to the tedium, everything building to a treatise on the here-and-now that packs a mighty wallop.

The artifice of all that’s preceded this sequence is slowly stripped away, the one-dimensionality of Pattinson’s portrait proving to be just another of Cronenberg’s illusions as the actor begins to awaken, evolve, and emote in ways heretofore unseen. The points the director is trying to make – the ideas about wealth, self, life, poverty, country, and community – come crashing to earth, and even if the final fade-out is as vague as they come, that doesn’t make the effect it had on me any less palpable.

It’s getting there that’s the chore. The movie depicts a day in the life of financial whiz-kid Eric Packer (Pattinson), heading off in his limo to get a haircut on the other side of Manhattan even though his chief of security, Torval (Kevin Durand), urges him to do otherwise. Along the way he encoun-

As ill as it was making me, even though I felt at war with myself over the actions of the characters, struggling to make sense of it all within the narrative, I couldn’t have left my seat no matter how hard I tried. Zobel’s film is a master class in more ways than one – something I’m certain to verify when I sit down to watch this one again, even if it does take me a few years to rustle up the courage to do so. ters his newlywed wife, Elise Shifrin (Sarah Gadon), has meetings with various members of his inner circle (Samantha Morton, Jay Baruchel, Philip Nozuka), hooks up with his artistic muse (Juliette Binoche), and has his daily medical checkup – almost all of these events taking place inside his high-tech vehicle.

These sequences, taken on their own, are more or less bizarre, disjointed, and only tangentially connected. They are brief vignettes, all delivered in some sort of monosyllabic hallucinogenic dream state that’s decidedly unnerving. Emotions are raw, but you can’t get a grasp on any of them, Cronenberg keeping an aloof air of pretense and artifice throughout that’s hardly invigorating.

It all looks and sounds stunning, of course, and part of me is saddened by the fact that few will take the time to seek out this picture – from a technical standpoint alone, this is one of the better efforts of the year. Peter Suschitzky’s (Spider) cinematography is particularly stunning, and when you consider that almost all of the action takes place inside a stretch limousine, that’s high praise indeed. The film is also spectacularly edited by Ronald Sanders (The Bang Bang Club) and magnificently scored by Howard Shore (Hugo), their contributions key to making certain facets work as well as they do.

Even with my reservations – and I have more than I can easily get into here – I cannot get Cosmopolis out of my head. Where Cronenberg leads us, the final discussion he catapults Pattinson and Giamatti inside of, the filmmaker manages to bring things full-circle in a way I find fascinating. The acts and the illusions of the first 90 or so minutes are shown for what they were, the futility and drudgery of Packer’s ambitions revealed for what they are. The film may be a mess, but it’s a glorious mess, and those willing to take the ride will engage in a journey they’re unlikely to soon forget.

Rory Block: Nice country blues at Triple Door

They opened with “Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love,” followed nicely by “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps,” “Song of the Black Lizard,” “I Don’t Want to Work,” “Midnight Bossa Nova,” “Hang On Little Tomato,” “What’ll I Do,” “In the Blue Dome,” “Forget Your Name,” “Hey Eugene,” and “Over the Valley.” They closed with “Happy Days Are Here Again.” The sold-out crowd gave them a standing ovation.

RORY BLOCK Son Jack Jr opened for Rory Block at the Triple Door, August 16. They had good blues harmonica, guitar, and voice. High points were “Maximum Insecurity” and “I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead, You Rascal You.” Rory Block has a strong voice and her guitar playing is delicious. While feasting on pine-nut quesadillas and red bean burgers, they noticed a sound engineer setting up a mixer. “When’s the show?” they asked. “Tonight. It’s a talent show,” said the employee.

When the duo found out that there was an open slot for them in the lineup for The Capitol Hill Talent Show, “and since it was a 90-degree day outside and The Grill on Broadway seemed to have air conditioning and ice water, we figured, why not?” Birdsall told SGN. What happened at the talent show that night is the kind of thing that bands – and everyone else, from the show’s producer and the venue owner to the audience – live for. The Winterlings not only won the contest that night but also made a connection with the audience that was unforced and organic, derived from talent and a commanding live performance.

“In spite of amazing competition, including a drag queen who stapled money to her skin, we won!” exclaimed Bowden.

THE SHOW GOES ON The Capitol Hill Talent Show is currently taking place Friday nights at The Grill on Broadway, starting at 9 p.m. The one and only Mama Tits, Seattle’s Skyscraper Hostess (www.briandanielpeters.com), serves as host of the five-week series (Aug. 17–Sept.

14). STORM VS. SPARKS Mercy and Cuteness watched the Seattle Storm take on the Los Angeles Sparks at Key Arena, August 18. The Sparks came into the game 15-and-6, while the Storm were 10-and-10. Ann Wauters was out with a strained left achillles and Sue Bird had the flu. Lauren Jackson was still in Australia because of her Olympic responsibilities.

(By the way, Sue Bird brought home her third gold medal for the USA, while Lauren Jackson and Australia captured the bronze.

These two medals bring the Storm roster’s Olympic medal count to 13.)

After the first quarter the Storm were ahead, 22–20. The end of the half was just as close in the Sparks’ favor, 40-38. They were still ahead after the third quarter, 6660. The final score was Los Angeles 82, Seattle 71. Kristi Toliver earned 22 points for the Sparks.

Although no one in the band identifies as LGBTQ, when Birdsall and Bowden met, Bowden’s mother was in a same-sex relationship.

“We almost wrote a song together on the birthday of my mother’s lover,” Bowden told SGN. “As a believer in the openness of the universe, my mother preferred to think of love having less to do with the sex of the person she loved and more to do with the whole person.”

“For many years she lived with and loved a woman,” he said.

HONORING A TRANS PIONEER The Winterlings also have what they describe as a “songdaughter,” who lived as a “songson.”

“We think of each song we write as a child, and we wrote a song about Jennie Hodgers, who transitioned to Albert Cashier, a Transgender Civil War hero who is rarely mentioned in history books,” the duo told me. “Jennie became Albert at the age of 19, fought through the entire Civil War, then continued to live as a man after the war for the rest of his life. We believe his story is brave and beautiful and needs to be told.”

BÉLA FLECK AND THE MARCUS ROBERTS TRIO Mercy is looking forward to seeing Béla Fleck and the Marcus Roberts Trio at Jazz Alley, September 6 to 9. Band members are Fleck (banjo), Roberts (piano), Jason Marsalis (drums), and Rodney Jordan (bass). lin, harmonica, piano, banjitar, and drums, The Winterlings build bonfires of sound to dance and dream beside – in short, indie folk. Traditional instruments played in nontraditional ways.

Birdsall and Bowden met one night in Florida at a Buddhist fire ritual. As a visual artist and poet, Bowden says he’d been seeking a way to lift his art to a new and more magical realm, a way to distill color and language into song. At the time he couldn’t play any instruments. Birdsall was already a performing songwriter and a lifelong musician but had thoughts of giving it all up. She was the muse and the music Bowden had been waiting for, and his life as an artist reawakened her desire for a creative life. They flew kites on the beach at night and decided to head west, landed in Oregon, then wandered north. They started out writing songs individually with no intention of becoming a band, but found that they each wanted to add to the other’s songs – harmonies, rhythms, and other sounds.

“It has been, and continues to be, a great joy to work together,” the duo told SGN. They officially formed The Winterlings in 2010, with Birdsall on lead and harmony vocals, guitar, banjitar (or gitjo), violin, harmonica, and sometimes piano or harmonium; Bowden on lead and harmony vocals, guitar, banjitar, harmonica, ukulele, and foot drums; Peter Race on drums; and Howard Hooper on bass.

A VIVID DREAMSCAPE The band’s name comes from the supernatural swamp beings of Bowden’s childhood. Here’s his memory of it: “When I was a kid, I lived in a house on stilts above a swamp. In the summer, I watched my stepfather blast water moccasins off tree stumps from our porch, and I swam in a lake where the alligators were so thick that the black surface of the water was textured with their heads.”

This year, Fleck earned his 13th Grammy, for Best Instrumental Composition (“Life in Eleven,” co-written with Howard Levy). He has been nominated in more different categories than any other musician: arranging, composition, spoken word, folk, classical, bluegrass, jazz, pop, and country. At night, owls filled the trees like dogwood blossoms in spring, and when he wasn’t running through the ferns, he says, he was dreaming.

“I read Egyptian myths. I drew thousands of turtles and penguins. And when I slept, my dreams were vivid,” said Bowden.

“One morning, I was eating oatmeal when I suddenly remembered that the dream I had the night before was one I’d had before,” he recalled. “‘Mom,’ I said, ‘I keep dreaming the same thing twice.’

‘What do you dream, Wolff?’

‘I go down the path and light a fire and then some people come out of the trees and their faces are animals.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘They’re like you, Mom, and like the other people, but they have faces like alligators and lions. Even eagles are in there. Some have tails and wings.’

‘Are they scary?’

‘Maybe. They sometimes walk close to me.’

‘What do you do then?’

‘I sing.’

‘Do you remember what you sing?’

‘No. I just sing and they stop walking and they look at the fire.’

‘What do you call them?’

‘The Winterlings.’”

“She reached for her journal, where she wrote all this down,” said Bowden. “I was six years old.” “‘Guess what, Mom.’ ‘What?’

‘We all have Winterlings.’”

continued from cover the stigma of being Bisexual and black, how she doesn’t regret the Idol ordeal, and why her upcoming album – and entire solo career – almost didn’t happen.

Azzopardi: Before you came out publicly in a recent interview, how out were you in your own life?

Davis: I first told my mom that I was attracted to [both] boys and girls when I was 16 years old. A lot of my friends and family weren’t really surprised to hear that I had “come out,” because all I did was answer a question honestly in an interview and it ended up becoming a headline.

I didn’t plan to come out. I fell in love with someone I think I could be with forever, and I’m used to, in casual conversation, talking about my partner. That’s what ended up happening in the interview and what ended up being my coming out. It wasn’t something that I had planned. It wasn’t something I was being secretive about, either. I’ve performed at so many HRC and GLAAD events and Gay Prides – and made

out with so many girls in college. I don’t think it was a secret to anybody! [laughs] Azzopardi: Was performing “I Kissed a Girl” on The Voice your way of hinting at your homosexuality?

Davis: You know what’s crazy? I didn’t even plan to do that. They came to me and said, “You’re singing ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and I’m like, “OK. Well, let’s go with this.”

Azzopardi: You just got involved with the It Gets Better campaign. Why was that important for you to be a part of?

Davis: The most important thing to me outside of music is inspiring young people.

The more we adults continue to send out the message to young people that it’s OK to be you, we’re all, in a small way, contributing to making the world a little better. That’s just my philosophy. Any opportunity that presents itself to send that message to young people, I’m all for it.

Azzopardi: For you, how did it get better?

Davis: My mother was very accepting and understanding, but I actually didn’t tell my father right away. I think he definitely knew because he came to visit my dorm room and was like, “Wow, you’ve got a

lot of pictures of half-naked girls on your wall.” [laughs] Azzopardi: You were just idolizing those girls … right?

Davis: Yeah, idolizing them – sure. And thinking they were hot. My dad read so much into it, and it’s been really interesting seeing my dad embrace all of this – that has been the most heartwarming part of it.

I mean, my father and I never really talked about it. My mother knew; she met whatever girls and guys I dated in high school. But with my dad, we never really talked about it until he met my partner and was like, “You look happy. I like her.”

My dad is super conservative and Republican. Black Republican, I know. Don’t even get me started. He was the one I was afraid to tell. When it all ended up being in the headlines, he was afraid that me being open and honest about who I am would affect my career negatively or negatively affect the way people look at me. You know, he’s my dad; he just wants to protect me. It really meant so much to me when [my coming out was] all in the headlines and my dad called me and was like, “I just want to call and say I’m really proud of you.”

Moments like that have reminded me that it indeed does get better. There were times where it was hard, like in high school. And not even having to do with being Bisexual, but being a big girl, too. People called me fat; they called me a dyke and all those things. I know what it feels like to not fit into the mold of what society thinks you’re supposed to be.

Azzopardi: Bisexuality in the Gay community is often looked at as taboo or “just a phase.” Have you felt stigmatized because of it?

Davis: It absolutely is something I’ve had to fight. For a long time that’s why I dated mostly men, because when I would meet a woman I was into – a Lesbian – she would be turned off by the fact that I was Bisexual.

Azzopardi: And men aren’t so much turned off by that.

Davis: [laughs] Men are totally opposite!

For a long time I felt like it was just easier to identify with being straight – it seemed easier to date guys because Lesbians seemed so turned off by the Bisexual thing. So I’ve experienced criticism and people looking down on it in the straight community and in the Gay community.

I didn’t plan to come out, but I’m really thankful that everything unfolded the way it did because no, I’m not straight – none of the guys I’ve been with made me straight, just like being madly in love with my partner right now doesn’t make me a Lesbian.

I’m a Bisexual woman and it is what it is. I have enjoyed men thoroughly, and I can say the same thing about women. People who don’t think that it’s real, maybe that’s the reality in which they exist, but that’s not my reality.

Azzopardi: How does being black and Bisexual change things?

Davis: I honestly thought that we were a lot farther [along], and then I did an interview with the Tom Joyner Morning Show and was completely taken aback by the way that went. The interview ended with a guy shouting, “Let a man into the bedroom!”

That’s how disrespectful it was. It was bad.

It really broke my heart, because I know what it’s like to be black in America and I know what it’s like to be a woman in America, and to be treated with disdain and disrespect by members of my own community was hurtful. It hurt me to the core.

You know, at the end of the day when the stage lights are turned off and the audiences go home, you have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror. When I leave this

earth, I want to know that I was on the right side of history. Things won’t change unless people like me say, “No, I’m not going to allow society to bully me into lying about who I am.”

Azzopardi: Christina Aguilera’s diva behavior makes a lot of headlines. What is she really like, and what surprised you most about working with her on The Voice?

Davis: [hesitates] I’m never going to bad talk her, publicly. I’m just never gonna do it. But I will say this: I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing her ear is. Her ear is on point. Even when she’s not trying, that instrument is right. She definitely is a pop diva for a reason.

Azzopardi: She has a reason to be a little catty, is what you’re saying.

Davis: No! I’m not saying that! That’s what you got out of that? [laughs] Azzopardi: What do you remember most from performing at drag clubs and Gay bars?

Davis: All the makeup tips I picked up.

All the wardrobe tricks I’ve learned. My friends from back then. I don’t miss the struggling part! [laughs] But even then, maybe – those days of being in that grind and me and my college friends not being able to afford to fly home for the holidays, so we all put our money together to go grocery shopping and I cooked a big holiday dinner for everyone. Then it was, “Well, let me go sing with the Gay boys tonight so I can make a couple of dollars real quick” – because you know the Gay boys tip at the drag bar! [laughs] Azzopardi: You were among a bunch of other drag queens. Did anyone ever mistake you for one?

Davis: They didn’t. I think that’s why I made so many tips, because I was the only real girl and I was the only performer not lip-syncing. So I’m really thankful for that.

I still keep in touch with a lot of drag queens in D.C. The Gay community in D.C. is really what started this whole performing at Gay Prides and all that. It’s been an amazing journey.

Azzopardi: After performing on reality shows and doing Rent on Broadway, how does it feel to be releasing your debut single and album?

Davis: It’s amazing how the universe works. There was a time when I just thought, “I don’t want to feel unfulfilled and bitter, so maybe I should give up on the recording thing and be really thankful that I’m a Broadway star and just do the theater thing.” There was a moment where I had given up on this, and then I’m singing at a Gay club and the casting director for The Voice is in the audience having drinks and then I’m on The Voice and this whole other window of opportunity opens up that I never even expected.

Azzopardi: What can we expect from the upcoming album and your debut single?

Davis: It’s gonna be dance-pop and the first single is called “Love’s Got a Hold on Me,” and it was written by Janice Robinson and I’m really excited about it. I shot a video for it with Brian Friedman as the co-director and choreographer. A lot of people know Brian from his work with Britney Spears, and he’s a creative director for X Factor.

Brian jumped on board because he believed in me enough to be like, “Yeah, I’m gonna bring in the dancers and make it fierce for you.”

Azzopardi: Is the whole album dancepop or just the single?

Davis: The single is dance-pop and most of the album will be dance music. But, of course, I’m gonna throw in a power ballad or two! I have to. Knowing me and my Gay boys, there will probably be dance remixes of even the ballads. [laughs] Azzopardi: Are you going to get Christina on the album?

Davis: I’d love to, if she’ll do it.

Azzopardi: Is there pressure to stay in the closet on shows like American Idol or The Voice?

Davis: Not at all. I didn’t feel any pressure to not be out when I was on those shows.

In all honesty, some of the people who’ve been most successful on those shows have been members of the LGBT community.

Look at Adam Lambert – and America loved Beverly [McClellan] and loved Vicci [Martinez], so I didn’t feel any pressure at

all. I can’t really speak for Idol because I didn’t stay on the show long enough to really have a fair comparison between Idol and The Voice, but I can speak from my experience on The Voice, and I can say that they were very welcoming to LGBT contestants.

I don’t think anyone there felt pressure to not be open about who they are. And that was an amazing experience. Who would’ve thought 10 years after being on Idol that I’d be singing “Lady Marmalade” on national TV with Christina Aguilera?

Azzopardi: So you’re glad things worked out the way they did? No hard feelings against Idol?

Davis: You can’t waste your time on regrets, because they’re just the past crippling you in the present. If there were a button we could push to change the past then that would be a different conversation, but that button doesn’t exist so you have to walk away with all the lessons that you could’ve possibly learned and move forward and try to be better in the future. I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m really thankful for the woman that I’m evolving into, and I’m really thankful for all the good in my life. Had something back then happened differently, who knows where I would’ve been today.

MARRIAGE EQUALITY ALLIES Something that The Winterlings believe to be meaningful is the freedom to marry.

“We wholeheartedly believe in marriage equality,” the band told SGN. “We honor all the ways in which the LGBTQ community has fought for a more free and creative world.”

In fact, Birdsall has participated in Gay rights demonstrations in solidarity with Lesbian friends. “Shortly before we became The Winterlings, I performed solo for a Lesbian couple’s commitment ceremony reception, in a state where Gay marriage is not recognized,” she said.

According to Bowden, who is a visual artist as well, two of his major art collectors, Mike and Ray, adopted a little girl who might have otherwise ended up on the streets of Manhattan. “She is the luckiest little daughter in the world,” he said. “They are stellar fathers. They threw her a ‘get as messy as you can’ fifth birthday party with fingerpaint, water balloons, bubbles, and whipped-cream pies. They take her on nature walks and play in streams. It was a joy to spend a week in their home and watch great parents at work.”

The Winterlings will perform at a “Live at Lunch” show in Bellevue on August 28, and, because they won the first round of The Capitol Hill Talent Show, they will compete for the grand prize of $1,000 cash and trip to Las Vegas on September 21 at The Grill on Broadway.

“We are working on new songs and building a fuller band,” said the duo. “We’d love to hear from any musicians who resonate with our music and might want to collaborate or create with us, especially sassy, quirky souls who love to harmonize.”
