Seattle’s exotic performance artists rally for Obama

American Idol alum talks about her acting debut, her Gay following, and (of course) Whitney

Burlesque sensation The Shanghai Pearl and her PNW Glitter PAC (that’s the Pacific Northwest Glitter Political Action Committee) will present “Burlesque for Barack,” a fundraiser for President Obama’s re-election campaign, on Friday, August 31, in the West Hall of the Oddfellows Building (915 E. Pine St.). Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 8:30.

The Shanghai Pearl told SGN that she and her fellow burlesque stars are raising money for Obama “because the possibility of Mitt Romney as our next president is a horrifying one.”

The entertainers involved with the show believe entertainment and politics do match.

SPARKLE Opens August 17 Whitney Houston’s starring role – the last before her tragic death earlier this year – isn’t the only reason Sparkle has Gay written all over it. There’s the flamboyant style of the ’60s, an all-girl singing group, and, well, the movie’s name.

To assuage their grief they make a list of the qualities they’d want their kid to possess. Stuff like how he or she would “kick the winning goal” or be “honest to a fault” – that sort of thing. Placing their dreams of parenthood in an old wooden box, they bury

NEW VOICES 13 CONTEMPORARY CLASSICS August 13 Contemporary Classics founder and artistic director Brandon Ivie is now bi-coastal, as he forges a career in both New York City and Seattle. The young theater impresario is still committed to the company, however, and this week he produced his 13th edition of New Voices, a semi-annual cabaret of great singers and new songs from contemporary composers.

Ivie hosted the evening with a genial and humorous air and a wry grin. He and musical director R.J. Tancioco scan the Internet for new songs and writers, and keep their keen ears in the air for new singers. Their ability to choose great material and pair it with great local talent goes a long way toward creating the joy that is the New Voices showcase.

The evening started off with young Eliza Palasz showing her poise with a new song

by Drew Gasparini, who, Ivie explained, has been tapped to create some original rock-musical-style songs for a client on a new reality series on Oxygen called The Next Big Thing: NY. The show follows New York City performance coach Trapper Felides and his young clients, and Gasparini is helping one of those clients, an older teen girl, make an album. Palasz performed “Good for You,” a cut from that album.

The evening was full of incredible talent, including Beth DeVries, Cayman Ilika, Jadd Davis, Jared Michael Brown, Billie Wildrick, and Joshua Carter, to name just a

few. Poignant songs included one that many in the room identified with, “Make It Here,”

by Sam Carner and Derek Gregor, sung

by Heath Saunders. In the song, the singer pleads with his father, who has never approved of his son’s career, to come watch him perform on stage.

But it’s fun to call out the fantastic funny songs that Ivie and Tancioco find and pair with some of Seattle’s favorite funny singers. Don Darryl Rivera, who has also begun traveling around the country as his career blossoms, has missed a few recent NV iterations but was back for No. 13. Ivie finds often creepy, to-die-for songs for Rivera, but this time, he just sang about dying, as in a plane crash, with “The Plane” by Ryan Scott Oliver.

Bobbi Kotula, known for her ability to slay the audience with laughter, joined the fun in her first NV outing with “Yolanda at the Bottom of the Stairs” by Joe Iconis and Robert Maddock. They wrote this as the answer to a murder mystery, with the singer revealing just how she caused the hated Yolanda to land at the bottom of those stairs.

Comic Nick DeSantis, fresh from a scenestealing turn in Village Theatre’s production of The Producers, sang “Good News, Mrs. Davenport” by Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair, which made everyone laugh as he tells Mrs. Davenport just how healthy she is – for a dying woman. “The good news is: you got up this morning!”

lied wait for It to Get Better. Connor Russell sang “Like It Here,” in which a teen sings to a departed friend in a lovely graveyard, asking if he should also commit suicide, while finding the strength to stay alive.

But the evening ended with crazy applause for the funniest song of all, “Def Ass Musical Theatre Gangsta Jam” by Michael Kooman and Chris Dimond, rapped by Eric Ankrim (“Musical Theater Bitch!”), and

a huge gospel chorus took the stage with Caety Sagoian as she blew out the room with “House of Love” by Jeremy Schonfeld.

What an ending!

The next New Voices will likely be at the end of December, and Ivie is revving up to cast Contemporary Classics’ next musical (co-produced with Balagan Theatre), Next to Normal, premiering in January. Get it on your calendar!

it deep in their garden and go to sleep that night in each other’s arms, desperately trying to feel right once again with the world.

There is a massive rainstorm during the night, which is rather strange seeing that they’re in the midst of a drought and nothing of the like has been in any of the weather forecasts. Then there is a thump in the kitchen, a noise coming up the stairs, a soft creaking of the door to the room their child would sleep in. Cindy and Jim investigate, discovering a mud-covered boy who calls himself Timothy (CJ Adams) standing before them.

But that’s not the weird part. The weird part is who he claims to be and where he mysteriously comes from, the smiling adolescent stating he is in fact their son, and thanks to the leaves growing from his legs and ankles it’s readily apparent he’s sprung forth right out of the Greens’ garden.

It goes without saying that The Odd Life of Timothy Green is fantasy. Working from a story by Ahmet Zappa, screenwriter and director Peter Hedges (Dan in Real Life, Pieces of April) has constructed a family fable fitting well within the Disney canon, calling to mind works of fiction like Bridge to Terabithia, One Magic Christmas, and Candleshoe. That it moved me in ways I can’t quite put into words isn’t a surprise, but that it has me scratching my head, a bit underwhelmed by the aspects that don’t entirely come together, somewhat is. Certain elements never develop like they should, making the finished feature something of a mixed bag – difficult to dislike but equally hard to fully embrace.

The early bits work the best. Timothy’s magical appearance, the sight of a raging thunderstorm in reverse, the way Cindy and Jim discover the boy’s soil-enriched secret – all of it is a beguiling mix of whimsy, emotion, and melodrama that held me happily spellbound. Things didn’t need to be spelled out – nothing needed to be overly explained.

Timothy’s appearance just is, exactly as it

should be, making the Greens’ embracing of him all the more richly rewarding.

But there are little issues throughout, some of them not too big a deal but others very much so. Side stories involving the potential closing of the town’s legendary pencil factory (where Jim is a manager) and Timothy’s attempts to fit in with the rest of the family (most notably Brenda, Cindy’s perfectionist sister, played by a woefully underutilized Rosemarie DeWitt) are uncomfortably herky-jerky, shifting in tone far too often. Most annoying is a framing device utilizing a solid if not particularly memorable Shohreh Aghdashloo, to whom the pair tell their story for reasons best discovered within in the confines of the film, even if those moments don’t work as well as they should.

Still, there are scenes that broke my heart, made me smile ear to ear, and had my soul overflowing with joy. One sequence between Adams and veteran character actor M. Emmet Walsh is hypnotic in its subtly honest simplicity, while another meet-cute moment involving relative newcomer Odeya Rush, playing a fellow youngster who finds Timothy intriguing, is borderline divine.

As for the ending, while what happens is hardly a shock or a surprise, Hedges earned my tears, and I can’t for a second say I felt ashamed for shedding them.

Could this movie have been classic?

Maybe. There are certainly times when I felt the script didn’t go far enough, didn’t take enough time to flesh out its supporting players or make the situation at the pencil factory, and the subsequent resolution to all the madness (it involves leaves), resonate strongly enough to make a lick of sense. But Garner and Edgerton give all of themselves, while young Adams is an ethereal standout in the title role. I enjoyed The Odd Life of Timothy Green and was enraptured by many of its delicate nuances. There is magic here – maybe just enough to make the film’s shortcomings worth enduring.

Celebrating 39 Years!

Ill-fated Sparkle hopelessly out of tune

their story with a turgid dogmatism that is almost insulting, slapping the viewer across the face when a subtle caress would have delivered the point with tons more power.

They’re going through the motions, time and continuity having no apparent meaning, everything leading to a foregone conclusion that’s about as rousing as an American Idol finale.

I bring up that show for a reason – not because Jordan Sparks was its sixth-season winner (making comparisons to Academy Award-winning season-four also-ran Jennifer Hudson sadly inevitable) – but because of the way the final concert is shot, executed, and staged. Did anyone suggest that less might be more in the case of Sparkle’s triumphant moment – that going over the top with a lot of unnecessary theatrics might call attention away from the innate power of the moment and instead bring back memories of Sparks beating out Blake Lewis for the American Idol crown?

If so, nobody listened, and that’s the problem with Sparkle. No one here is bad, per se – all of the actors, including Sparks, read their lines with conviction and by and large do all that’s required of them. But there is no restraint where the bigger picture is concerned. The volume is pushed past 11, making the mediocrity of the whole far more apparent, the one or two quiet moments with potential for real connection disappearing into the sonically maddening ether.

Obviously, this movie will be talked about more because of Houston than anything else. While she does OK here, while her performance as the bitter mother desperately trying to keep her daughters from repeating her own mistakes isn’t an embarrassment (no The Preacher’s Wife or Waiting to Exhale redux here), I hope the movie will be judged on its own merits and not treated as some sort of sacred document because of her supporting role. The bottom line is that while Houston’s death was a tragedy, this doesn’t make Sparkle any less pedestrian, and while I’ll happily enjoy the singer’s music for the foreseeable future and beyond, here’s hoping I never have to think about this film and her involvement in it ever again.

Azzopardi: What was it like spending your 21st birthday at a drag club in Dallas?

Sparks: It was the best thing ever. It was my first time, and I was just beside myself because I had never seen a drag show live before. I was just so amazed at how they transform and lip-sync to a T. So much fun!

They were doing these tiny tube shots and my hairdresser and his partner were there and we were just having a blast. All of us had a great time. I can’t wait to go back.

Azzopardi: Do you hope there will be a Sparkle drag queen?

Sparks: I’m waiting for it! I’m waiting on them to come out in a red dress like that [points to movie poster] with their hair down, singing to my songs. I can’t wait. And hey, Halloween is coming up, too!

Azzopardi: What is your fondest memory of being here in Detroit with Whitney?

Sparks: For me as a singer, growing up and loving her and listening to her so much, the whole experience was amazing. But also, she was just so open and wanted to get to know us. That was very unexpected.

Azzopardi: Was there a specific scene she guided you through?

Sparks: She was there for a lot of the songs when she didn’t need to be there, which was really sweet. One thing she did say was, “Believe in the gift that you have.

Believe in your talent,” because there were times when I was really unsure since I’d

never done a movie before. She was like, “Mama’s here, it’s OK.” And she used to call us her babies. When you see us up on that screen and we’re telling each other that we love each other, it’s genuine. We got to know her and we cherished her. We loved her.

Azzopardi: You grew up in Arizona and now you’re a part of Hollywood. How did your Gay circle change when you made the move?

Sparks: I didn’t know as many [Gay people in Arizona], but I did drama club, and the head of my drama club in the ninth grade – his name was Eric and on the weekends he was Sapphire St. Regis, and he was so amazing! He was the president of the drama club, and so talented and so fun. Then I did community theater, and that introduced me to more. I have some [Gay] family members as well, so I’ve always been used to it.

Azzopardi: The rumors of you growing up in a Christian family that wasn’t very accepting of Gay people are just nonsense, then?

Sparks: That’s all stuff that people write.

I grew up in a Christian family, but I have cousins and I have tons of friends [who are Gay]. Some of my closest friends are actually Gay, and some of my band members are as well. So, for me, I’m just like, whatever!

Those are just mean things that people say.

Azzopardi: Your boyfriend, Jason De-

rulo, has a following in the Gay community for many reasons. One of those is an “It Gets Better” video he filmed. Have you thought about getting involved in anything like that?

Sparks: I would love to. You see people being so hateful toward other people, and I wasn’t raised like that. I was raised to love everybody, and some of the funnest times I have had are with my Gay friends. So, for me, I am all for it and I would love to do something like that.

Azzopardi: Did you make anything of how closely related the name Sparkle is to Glitter, Mariah Carey’s infamous film?

Sparks: If you haven’t seen the original Sparkle you kind of assume it’s a sequel – Glitter, Sparkle, sprinkles, fairy dust – they all go together! I hadn’t realized it was such a cult classic. I had no idea until I got the part and then I had people coming up to me, going, “You better not mess it up” and “Is this song on the soundtrack?” But I love Mariah Carey. I think Sparkle is definitely very different than Glitter. [laughs] Azzopardi: The song “Celebrate” with Whitney Houston could work as a Gay anthem. What do you think about that?

Sparks: Whitney and I didn’t get to do it in the studio together because our schedules didn’t allow it, but when I recorded my part, I heard her as I was recording and she sounded so happy. Whitney loved her Gays.

She absolutely loved them. For me, being one of the last songs she did – a song just about loving each other and celebrating each other and it just being so encouraging and uplifting – I think it’s one of the best gifts she could’ve left. I feel like that song is one of the best gifts she could’ve left for the

country. One night Sparkle persuades Sister to sing one of her songs at a club’s open mic competition, the pair attracting the attention of wannabe music producer Stix (Derek Luke) in the process.

One thing leads to another and he deftly persuades all three ladies to form a group, with Sister as the lead and Sparkle responsible for the songwriting. Soon the trio’s star is on the rise, and the young women catch the eye of a Columbia Records executive

(Curtis Armstrong), who might be interested in signing them to a contract. But Sister has also sparked the affections of comedian Satin Struthers (Mike Epps), and the pair’s destructive relationship has the potential to bring down the group and destroy Sparkle’s dreams of musical stardom before they even have the chance to achieve liftoff.

A remake of the 1976 musical with Irene Cara and Philip Michael Thomas, director Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom) and his screenwriter wife Mara Brock Akil (TV’s The Game and Cougar Town) have transported their version of Sparkle even further back in time, setting the proceedings right in the middle of the Motown explosion. Musically, this was wise – their film is filled with rhythms and sounds that can’t help but make one enthusiastically move and groove even while sitting in a darkened theater.

Sadly, this might have been the only wise idea the pair had. Dramatically and structurally, this remake is an absolute mess, going the Dreamgirls meets A Star Is Born route but never in a way that makes what’s happening feel fresh or original. The movie is a turgid slog of clichés, empty melodrama, and wasted opportunities. Even with a couple of a show-stopping moments, on the whole the flick is a nearly two-hour mess that left me feeling bruised, battered, and bludgeoned, and aside from the glorious soundtrack there was hardly a single part of it I felt emotionally connected to.

That might be a little unfair. The subplot involving Sister and Satin, while tired and overly familiar, is acted with passion by Ejogo and Epps, who deliver their scenes with an electricity of purpose. The pair throw themselves into their portraits with conviction, letting every ounce of themselves seep off of the celluloid, making their tragedy at least somewhat compelling in the process.

Problem is, we’ve seen this story a billion times before, and we’ve seen it told a heck of a lot better. The price of stardom. The tragic nature of abusive love. The pain and suffering addiction can lead to. The heartbreak and bitter aftertaste of dreams unfulfilled. All of that and more is here, and none of it is very interesting. The Akils present

About the finger fiasco: “I was freaking out because I looked at the picture of Aretha and me and the nail is gone.” That’s not a problem today, however. “I made sure I glued these suckers on like nobody’s business!”

The ever-so-bubbly Sparks also chatted about the mutual adoration between Whitney and the Gay community, addressed “mean” rumors of her anti-Gay upbringing, and recalled her first time at a drag club.

Azzopardi: What are some of your favorite parts of Motown in the ’60s?

Sparks: I’d already grown up listening to [Motown music] because my grandparents introduced me to it when I was really young.

I listened to Diana Ross and the Temptations and all of them – so being here, knowing that’s where Motown started, you could feel the energy. I loved singing the music that was like that. And the clothes, come on now! The clothes, the makeup, and the hair – it was so much fun to transform into that every single day.

Azzopardi: Which outfit do you wish you could’ve taken with you after Sparkle wrapped?

Sparks: The outfit [I’m wearing] when I walk into Columbia Records – the hot pink dress with the white stripes on it, when I walk into [label exec] Larry Robinson’s office. It was my favorite one. It fit so good!

STUD stands strong Edgy Malaysian fashion designers unfazed by religious pressure

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor STUD, a dynamic sports brand created for today’s active man, celebrates the optimism, energy, and innocence of youth in its new summer underwear and swimwear collection, “Of Uth and Brothers.”

Produced in a striking color palette of blues, reds, purple, and yellow and featuring bold messages such as “Wear It Proud” and “Made with Pride,” the follow-up to last season’s popular “Winner Takes All” line continues the brand’s spirited interpretation of the modern athlete.

“This is our most personal collection to date,” reveals designer Voon Lai, who acknowledged that he and co-designer Jonathan Cheng encountered turbulence while designing “Of Uth and Brothers” last year.

“The conditions in Malaysia were stifling,” he tells SGN. “We were producing fashions that many in our conservative Muslim country considered obscene. The backlash we received was unnerving at times.”

On two occasions, the STUD website was hacked by Muslim fanatics from Indonesia.

“We felt ourselves succumbing to the pressure and creating safer, less-provocative gear, all in effort to avoid creating a stir,” he continues. “But by yielding to the conservative ideal, we realized we were losing the original vision for our brand.”

The pair decided a bold move was needed, so they released all their fears and went full-throttle with their summer collection.

“We channeled the bravery we had as youth

when we felt invincible and that we could do anything we put our mind to,” Lai recalls.

They experimented with new cuts, fabrication, prints, and styles. They designed unique sporty waistbands and teamed them with fresh, sharp color patterns.

“And we relied heavily on one another for support,” adds Lai. “We are lucky to not be alone in this venture. I consider Jonathan a brother, hence the addition of ‘brothers’ in the title of the summer collection.”

Lai and Cheng met in 2006 and became fast friends when they learned they shared a mutual interest in fashion design. Together, they worked various positions in women’s wear, graphic design, architecture, and interiors, but both felt a calling to do something out of the norm. They founded STUD in 2009 as a lifestyle sports brand that celebrates diversity and individuality and fills a niche between the bland big brands and the overtly sexual smaller labels.

“We saw potential in offering exuberant and energetic gear with a commercial appeal,” explains Lai. “STUD is more than just a garment,” he continues. “STUD defines who we are, what we feel, and how we express ourselves.

We’re feeling extremely positive and energetic this summer, like children who are ready to conquer the world. And it reflects in our new collection.”

Franz Ferdinand sets Showbox on fire domino records

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer FRANZ FERDINAND SHOWBOX AT THE MARKET August 9 Franz Ferdinand has been relatively quiet these past few years, performing sporadically and releasing sparse details about a new album. But in concert last week, performing to a full house at The Showbox Market, the band was anything but hushed.

From the start of the concert, blasting the crowd with “The Dark of the Matinee” and “No You Girls,” it was evident that this would be another raucous, sweaty affair by the Glasgow four-piece, known for their high-energy live performances.

Always fashionable with a hint of nerdiness, the group could’ve easily passed for Microsoft project managers – sharp, yet casual, and clean-cut. Lead singer Alex Kapranos still appears fresh and youthful, though his bang-less hairdo was unflatter-

ing.

“Are you feeling alright tonight?” Kapranos asked the restless crowd, just before introducing the next song as a “warm and gooey ballad,” which turned out to be the mid-tempo “Walk Away.” Franz Ferdinand really picked up the pace on “Do You Want To,” so much that guitarist Nick McCarthy ended it by leaping in the air and doing splits.

Newer material from the unit’s forthcoming album got a lukewarm reception

from the crowd, as did a pair of unrecorded tracks, “Brief Encounters” and “Scarlet Blue.” One loyal follower admitted after the show that she wasn’t “crazy about the new stuff.” That makes two of us.

The Bi-friendly “Michael” got everyone in the place excited – people on the main floor were hopping like bunnies, while those in the bar areas got involved by bobbing their heads or flexing their shoulders.

“Can’t Stop Feeling” smartly pick-pocketed Donna Summer’s throbbing bass line from “I Feel Love,” even lifting a verse from it and dropping it in somewhere toward the middle of the song. Meanwhile, Kapranos flamboyantly moved his hands around as if channeling the departed disco diva for her blessing.

An intoxicating rendition of “Take Me Out,” with the audience shouting out the chorus and fist-pumping in unison, was saved almost for last. “Ulysses,” the first single from the band’s most recent studio release, 2009’s Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, concluded the main portion of the show.

An encore featured another newbie, “Trees & Animals,” sandwiched between a wild run-through of “This Fire” and an extended version of “Outsiders,” a sometimes neglected track from 2005’s You Could Have It So Much Better. All four group members pounded away on the drum set, Paul Thomson sitting down and the other three standing and madly tapping on the cymbals or banging on the snares. When the performance did come to a close, Franz Ferdinand formed a link and took a collective bow, followed by Thomson daringly jumping into the crowd.

The year probably won’t end without a fourth album from this Scottish rock act, who’ve been collecting Gay fans since their self-titled CD from 2004. It’s likely we’ll see them again in Seattle later this year or early 2013, which already seems too long a wait.

It did, indeed, get loud Jack White delivers a sonic pummeling at the WaMu

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer JACK WHITE WAMU THEATER August 14 Touring on the heels of his first true solo album and accompanied by his all-female backing band, The Peacocks, Jack White burst through the gate like a steamroller Tuesday night. For starters, it was loud – loud enough to overcome the cavernous WaMu Theater and resound across the stone floor as if White and company were instead playing a massive outdoor setting like the Gorge. On this tour White is toting two complete sets of musicians – after all, when you’ve left the “normal” realm of rock musicianship and crossed over into full-blown living-legend status by the ripe old age of 37, why not shake things up a bit? (The allmale Buzzards apparently had the night off, however.) White and the half-dozen or so bejeweled ladies who joined him onstage bashed on their drums, keys, guitars, fiddle, strings, pedal steel, and anything else they could find to raise the roof off the WaMu through a dozen songs – plus a 10-song encore long enough to be another set entirely.

At this point, White has no shortage of music to choose from. He can draw from a deep well of songs he’s written with three highly successful bands – The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather – or from his solo effort, 2012’s Blunderbuss­, but watching him tear through song after song with barely a pause you begin to suspect that he has a secret vault of unreleased songs on par with only a few other living souls (like Prince). Mu-

sic seems to fly from Jack White’s fingers as though composing, arranging, producing, playing, and singing are his default setting.

Being a prodigy may not be easy, but White sure makes it feel that way with the sheer volume of quality work he’s created (or collaboratively produced for others) over the years. And it sounds impeccable live.

White kicked off the set with The White Stripes’ “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” dialed up to top volume, and skipped around to other classics like “Hotel Yorba,” “The Hardest Button to Button,” and “Seven Nation Army” (part of the lengthy encore). Considering these songs were originally written by a two-piece band, filling them out with six people left plenty of room for experimentation and a little dust of country from time to time. Without trying to recreate the past, White skipped around from album to album and delivered a nearperfect set that kept the mixed crowd of oldschool rock fans, 30-somethings, and kids of various ages fixated for two solid hours.

“Missing Pieces,” “Blue Blood Blues,” “I’m Slowly Turning Into You,” and “I Guess I Should Go to Sleep” filled out the first half, while “Sixteen Saltines,” “Steady as She Goes,” “Blunderbuss,” and “Take Me With You When You Go” rounded out the second, ending gracefully and appropriately with a cover of the classic “Goodnight Irene.” A Roman numeral “III” and blue-and-white lighting (grouped in sets of three) were in keeping with his current solo aesthetic as well as his longtime numeric obsession.

Jack White Jack White is every bit the eccentric genius people say he is, and let’s hope he stays that way. Larry Guthrie’s keyboards were delicious. Guitar by John Morton was hot. Garey Shelton’s bass was soulful. Backup vocals by Kelly Harland contributed sweet harmony.

“Miss You Like the Devil” featured piano and guitar. “Howlin’ for My Baby” had solos for Guthrie and Shelton. Larry ornamented “I Know It’s a Sin.” “Stranger” featured piano and bass. “I Need All the Help I Can Get” had a solo for Guthrie. “Livin’ the Blues” was co-written

by Tracy Nelson and Gary Nicholson. Larry ornamented “Lead a Horse to Water.”

“Send Me to the ’Lectric Chair” featured piano. “Shoot My Baby” had a solo by Morton. Larry ornamented “Please No More.”

“Little by Little” had a solo with Harland’s fine voice. “Don’t Go No Further” featured piano. A solo by Guthrie ornamented “Without Love.”

“Down So Low” was the first song Nelson wrote. It earned a standing ovation. “Got a New Truck” was a song co-written by Tracy and Marcia Ball. The audience also gave a standing ovation for that one.

SPYRO GYRA Reality joined Mercy for Spyro Gyra at Jazz Alley August 9. It was an evening of jazz originals. The band has been together 35 years and put out 29 CDs. Their latest one is titled A Foreign Affair. The leader said the idea behind the album was impressions of international travel.

Jay Beckenstein’s sax and clarinet were luscious. Keyboards by Tom Schuman were smart. Julio Fernandez’s guitar was out there. Bass by Scott Ambush was funky.

Bonny B’s percussion was rhythmic. Reality said, “You can tell these guys have been playing together a long time. They are really tight and smooth together. All five write, yet the compositions are coherent together. They are really talented – every one of them. The drummer is amazing.”

They opened with the slow “Caribe,” featuring clarinet and guitar. “Freetime” was upbeat and had solos by Beckenstein, Shuman, and Fernandez. “Catching the Sun” stayed there and was ornamented by Jay and Tom. “Dancing on Table Mountain” was also fast and featured bass, sax, and piano. “Expect Miracles” stayed there and had solos

by Beckenstein and B. There was a standing ovation for the drum solo. The conclusion, “Falling Walls,” was ornamented by Jay, Scott, and Julio. It also got a standing ovation.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE Mercy and Cuteness went to see Lesbian singer-songwriter Etheridge at ZooTunes on August 12, a beautiful day. Etheridge said she has been performing 25 years and has been cancer-free for eight. She has a new album coming out, Fourth Street Feeling.

High points were “Fearless Love,” “Chrome Plated Heart,” “I Want to Come Over,” “The Wanting of You,” “Come to My Window,” “Brave and Crazy,” “I Run for Life,” “You Make Me Nervous,” and “Sweet Devil’s Got My Soul.” The sold-out crowd gave her a standing ovation.

Minaj’s fan base, largely young Gay men, have wholeheartedly embraced the charismatic performer’s unique style. At last weekend’s Paramount Theatre show in Seattle, girls and boys sported bright pink wigs, faux hawks, feather boas, and painted faces. And when the house lights dimmed around 9 p.m., the decibel level was already ear-splitting.

Following a brief monologue, which no one could hear above the screams of the crowd, and the dropping of a curtain with the singer’s name and the title of her 2010 album, Pink Friday, Minaj was finally visible in blonde locks underneath a black hooded cape perched on an elevated platform with her back to the audience. Then she turned around and all hell broke loose.

“Roman’s Revenge” and “Did It On ’Em” flew by in record time, probably inside of five minutes. In fact, the entire concert seemed to whiz right along. Dressed adorably in daisy dukes, pink tiger-striped tights and undershirt, a loose muscle tee with shiny pink hi-tops, Minaj epitomized the hip-hop Barbie doll we’ve come to associate her with. Her on-stage fleet consisted of four sexy male dancers and two thin female ones, aside from a DJ who spun Minaj tracks off to the side during costume breaks.

Her stage decor ranged from open-bookshaped video screens to mini-stairwells to podiums for herself and her dance crew.

Supporting act 2 Chainz assisted on “Beez in the Trap” and on a mixtape medley, which seemed unnecessary and time consuming for a concert that didn’t quite reach 90 minutes. Similar to Janet Jackson’s performance from 2011, Minaj simply crammed too much into one show and really should’ve concentrated on just her big hits. Speaking of, she never even touched “Massive Attack.” That was a disappointment. Also on the minus side was no snippet of her bit on “Monster,” clearly the highlight of West’s smash single from a few years ago.

But there were things Minaj did do well.

I applaud her for not lip-synching, even though she incorporated background tracks instead of a live band. She was also bubbly and personable with no ego in tow. At one point, she invited about 20 random members of the audience to join her onstage and dance their asses off, and some of them did.

It was also a visually captivating production with smoke bombs, eye-popping graphics on large panel screens, confetti, and her hot boy dancers with washboard abs (who made me incredibly thirsty). And, I admire her for empowering young women, telling the girls in attendance at the Paramount to stay in school.

“It’s not cool to be a loser,” preached Minaj, before stating that neither looks nor

boobs matter when you get older.

“Starships” became a huge sing-along, as Minaj pranced around in a rosy two-piece ensemble with a peek-a-boo skirt. At times, she wailed into a bejeweled microphone the color of ... you guessed it, pink.

The show climaxed with “Super Bass,” as white confetti snowed upon the heads of concertgoers who just couldn’t resist flooding the aisles to get closer to the new pop icon. Throughout the performance, folks shouted, “I love you,” held up handwritten signs, blew kisses to Minaj, and a few of them sitting near me knew every word to every song, including her earliest stuff.

I must admit to being blown away by how crazed Nicki Minaj’s fans are. They come in all shapes and sizes, and the Gay boys just love her. While she’s got some catching up to do to reach the upper echelons of Missy Elliott, TLC, or Lauryn Hill, I’m now persuaded that she’s got what it takes to make a run for it.

“There is a lot of power in that potential,” she continued. “We can use art and entertainment to transcend, transform, and be transgressive.”

In addition, The Shanghai Pearl believes that art and entertainment – and especially comedy – are “extremely useful tools in tackling big, ugly things.”

“And in that vein,” she said, “the alchemy of art also gives us an opportunity to explore, share, and transform our feelings of fear, helplessness, hopelessness, powerlessness, and horror into something else.”

The show’s lineup has some of the biggest and most recognizable names in the Seattle burlesque scene.

“The pool of talent in Seattle is amazing and largely liberal, so the response was really positive and wonderful,” The Shanghai Pearl said of his experience booking the show. “I feel extremely proud to have wrangled these crazy amazing souls, lucky that the timing worked out, and honored that they trust me to organize a show worth donating their time and genius to this lineup.

It’s going to be a ridiculously fun, madcap night!”

In November, there is only one candidate that The Shanghai Pearl is going to vote for and she isn’t shy about letting everyone know that candidate is current U.S. President Barack Obama.

“The idea of having Mitt Romney as our president scares the bejeebus out of me,” said The Shanghai Pearl. “The biggest kicker for me is his stance on equal rights. How can anyone who doesn’t believe in equal rights for all be in a position to act in the best interest of an entire country?”

When talking to people in the LGBTQ and allied communities about the importance of voting this November, The Shanghai Pearl says, “This election has so much at stake. Hate is an action and apathy has no chance against it. What does have a chance against it is action, education, and organization.”

“There will be a record number of people whose votes are based on principles of hate, ignorance, and bigotry, and in my opinion we really can’t afford not to care,” she said.

Recognizing that some people might feel a bit uneasy about associating burlesque with a presidential campaign fundraiser, The Shanghai Pearl told SGN, “This

Sparks: No, but her family would tell us.

They’d be like, “She loves her Gays, honey,” and there have been a few other reporters who have interviewed her before and she absolutely represented. Hello! How can you not? I will say I have Googled “drag queens singing Jordin Sparks.” I just love it so much. I think it’s the best thing ever. I love watching them sing and sometimes I’m like, “They look better than I do! What is going on here?”

Azzopardi: When did you first become aware of your Gay fan base?

Sparks: In the very beginning, during meet-and-greets after concerts. There was just a huge array of people: all different races, orientations, and ages. I just remember because I didn’t think boys would like my music, but I have some straight male fans who love my music and then I have my Gay fans who love my music.

Azzopardi: More Gay than straight?

Sparks: Yes. Very much so! It’s actually really surprising when I have a straight male fan that’s like, “Yeah, I love your music.” And I’m like, “Really?”

Azzopardi: What’s coming up for you? A new album?

Sparks: I’m putting out a new album.

I’m working on it now. I’ve got about seven songs that I’m really feeling strongly about.

Sparkle is actually giving me the opportunity to do something stylistically different than I did before, so it’s going to be a little more R&B. Early Mariah, early Whitney, is what I’m going for. That’s what I grew up on.

I’m already filming my next film. It’s called The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, and Alicia Keys is executive producing and Jennifer Hudson is actually in it. It’s an indie drama and I don’t sing. I just play an Afro-Latina from the Bronx. I’m excited to see how that goes.

Azzopardi: Not as glamorous a role as Sparkle?

Sparks: Oh, she’s glamorous! The other day I had my hair pulled back in twists, almost like cornrows, and then my hair was on the side in a huge, curly side ponytail.

Then the lashes! And my nails were crazy.

comes to your town – and it’s been two years since its last stop in the Emerald City – it’s a DO NOT MISS affair.

As a drag-queen-obsessed Lesbian, it’s my extreme pleasure to be the only ladylovin’-lady involved in producing this event (along with my partner in Qulture Qreative, David Richey, and Marcus Wilson of Pony, Comeback, and Ononos fame). It’s an honor, really. When I first started producing parties in my early 20s, everything revolved around a drag queen. Some of you who actually lived in Seattle in the mid to late ’90s just might remember The Frisky Sisters, aka Chocha Fresca and Babalicious.

Every event I produced back in those days revolved around some grand appearance or performance by one of these two. They were amazing performers. Their makeup, their theatrical experience, the extreme talent they possessed, all generated these amazing numbers that were more like mini theatrical experiences, as opposed to some drag queen lip syncing to Whitney Houston yet again.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Don’t get me wrong – I love a drag queen in any form! However, there are some performers, or particular performances, that stick out for me. Heklina and her Trannyshack production BRING IT in that department. You never walk away wondering why you went. You always walk away with some crazy (awesome) memory!

We are in the midst of a drag revolution.

Thanks to the popularity of RuPaul’s Drag Race, we have a handful of new drag celebrities each year that events and venues across the country clamor to book. Paying top dollar! Right here in Seattle we have such a myriad of drag talent: Mark Finley, Geisha Starr, Lily Armani, Robbie Turner, Jinkx Monsoon, Mama Tits, Sylvia O’Stayformore, as well as those new scene scoundrels, The Lady Dudes and Honey Bucket. Plus, there are so many more that I haven’t named here. (I’m on a deadline, folks, so if I forgot a name, sue me!) It’s this way in every major city across the country.

All different styles and genres. Tons of drag queens, multiplying like gremlins would at Wild Waves! All of them, each one, my Lesbian wet dream. Each special and wonderful in her own way. Heklina and Trannyshack were the revolution before it was cool.

This will be my third time working on a Trannyshack event. The first time was the very last time Trannyshack came through Seattle. Hard Times Press had just run an interview that I had done with Heklina for our fifth issue, so it was a natural fit that we’d media sponsor the event. What I saw that night blew my mind. Ethel MerMAN singing that classic Tina Turner/Phil Spector joint “River Deep, Mountain High” live, and killing it! Fade-dra getting it so twisted (in a very good way) that I almost cried when her number was over. The second time was in Palm Springs. We (Qulture Qreative) brought Trannyshack to the table as part of our weekend of events at the Ace Hotel over Gay Pride Weekend several years back.

This is when I was exposed to Lady Bear.

Large, in charge, and fiercer than a mama tryin’ to save her baby from a dingo! Ooozing pure genius! This third time, well, all I can say is I can’t wait to see what mind blowing surprises Heklina has packed the show with this go-round. She always has something up her sleeve! Always.

Trannyshack has been featured in Out (which named it one of the top 10 reasons to move to San Francisco), Genre, Instinct, and Paper magazines. It has also won numerous Best of the Bay awards and was filmed for an independent feature-length documentary, Filthy Gorgeous: The Trannyshack Story. Trannyshack has been slowly branching out its empire, with regular sold-out shows in L.A., London, Waikiki, Palm Springs, Portland, New Orleans, and Reno. Next weekend it’s OUR TURN, Seattle!
