Jada Starr was crowned Ms. Gay FCS (Filipino Community of Seattle) last Sunday, August 5, at the Filipino Community Center in South Seattle.

Filipinos are “some of the most beautiful Gays in the world,” said pageant organizer Tita Ganda, who co-emceed with Aleksa Manila. And Ganda just might be right about that, as the four competitors (Amaya, Tyra, Carmina, and Starr) clearly showed.

The FCS title is the oldest running ethnic minority pageant title in Seattle.

“I was the first open Gay board member [of the FCS],” said Ganand were applauded by their fans for doing so. Last month, CNN’s Anderson Cooper came out and so did Frank Ocean, who is credited for changing the way hip-hop fans view the Gay community. The persona the Welsh-born Londoner presents with Electra Heart, the follow-up to her debut, The Family Jewels, is a prissy, sinfully sexual diva who aspires to be a “bottle blonde.”

In our interview, Diamandis chatted about her character, Gay fans, and the dirty title pun of her first album – which she never discussed until now.

Miss Daisy, is currently running at ReAct Theatre.

Each of the three actors, Walayn Sharples as Miss Daisy, Gordon Hendrickson as her son Boolie, and Ekello Harrid Jr. as Hoke, the chauffeur, are solidly centered in their performances and able to add piquant nuance while never overdoing or hamming it up. Everyone is also called upon to age about 20 years through the 90-minute (no intermission) production, and this is also

subtly accomplished by director David Hsieh.

The play begins around 1950 in the South, and reflects both the inherent racism of the time and the fact that most people, including African Americans, accepted it and dealt with it as best they could. From our lofty “post-racial” present, we can easily look down our noses at those times and practices.

These ‘kittens’ ain’t so innocent

for those who are younger to experience the era and learn about its attitudes. This points to part of the mission of Hsieh’s theater company.

When Daisy has too many accidents to safely drive anymore, her son insists that she hire a chauffeur. Daisy resists mightily, as she dislikes such ostentatious trappings of success. So Boolie decides to go ahead and hire someone himself, and have him (a chauffer was always male in those days) just sit around until Daisy finally breaks down and accepts the help.

He finds Hoke, who has enough experience to warrant hiring and who demonstrates his ability to stick to the job even if Daisy chases him away. Hoke does indeed sit in the kitchen doing nothing for several days until Daisy gives in and lets him drive.

Over time, they develop enormous affection for each other and discover they have much in common, such as both having lost their spouses.

The relationship that develops between them, despite the cultural barriers and social expectations of their time, is heartwarming and moving. Sharples and Harrid never get sappy, yet they always let us see the caring beneath the surface. And we see them learn about and appreciate each other.

The versatile yet cleanly simple set by Christopher Mumaw is combined with gentle lighting from Robert Falk and wonderfully quirky sound by Johanna Melamed.

My only quibble with this production is its unnecessary attempt to imbue a deeper meaning into the ending by having the actors speak slowly and take long pauses.

includes an arsonist (Laurel Ryan) and a purported cannibal of babies (Erin Pike), and then introduces a pregnant inmate (Erin Stewart) whose baby disappears. The matron (Lisa Viertel) insists she can “cure” her charges by zapping them with a newfangled machine that causes their brains to leak. Then there’s the women’s penchant for hiding things in their vaginal canals … and pulling them out when needed.

Every actor breathes life into her character and stays deeply focused on what she’s called upon to do. They all deliver a slightly New Yawk accent reminiscent of the Guys and Dolls era.

They’re supported with great, boobilicious costuming designed by Meaghan Darling, hair and makeup by Jana Hutchison, a workable though sketchy set by director Bret Fetzer and Ian Johnston, lights by Tess Malone, and sound by Kyle Thompson.

Original songs by Rick Miller are hysterically funny and fit the moment impeccably.

Mondelli allows aural glimpses of a really fine voice, though the role doesn’t call for her to be a good singer.

The ending is almost justified, although some of it seemed as though the playwright felt her creativity was waning and it was time to figure out how to stop. Still, if 85 to 90 percent of a work is solid, that’s a 9.5 or better in my book. Go see this Gold Medal play – skip an Olympic event if you have to.

KITTENS IN A CAGE ANNEX THEATRE Through August 25 Annex Theatre loves to produce comedies – often, the quirkier the better. Shows like Alecto and the prequel Team of Heroes are fun and funny, although they don’t necessarily stick to the ribs with substance.

Kittens in a Cage, their current production, billed as “Lesbians Behind Bars,” could be such a comedy, but it’s more.

Here’s why: Kelleen Conway Blanchard knows how to write plays. Her dialogue is smart, true to the character, idiosyncratic, and peppered with important details in throwaway lines. Her skill is evident here in the plot development, scene arrangements, and choice of characters. Sure, they’re based on stereotypes (the tough prison matron, the rule-bound guard, the good-girlgone-bad inmate, etc.), but even so, they rise above.

Junie (Francesca Mondelli), a young delinquent, is blithely glib about how she fell under bad influences who forced (forced!) her to kill a guard during a bank robbery, yet she still seems innocent and upbeat throughout. She charms her hardened firebug of a cellmate with a song on the ukulele and manages to hold her own against the Queen of the Lesbians, Jeanine (Tracy Leigh), while disarming others, personality-wise.

by James Whitely SGN Staff Writer ANNA IN THE TROPICS BURIEN LITTLE THEATRE Through August 26 Anna in the Tropics, a play by Nilo Cruz, details the lives of cigar factory workers in Tampa’s Ybor City in the late 19th century.

The play’s historical context is important to understand. When Cuban immigrants came to Florida in droves in the 1800s, they brought with them the well-known Cuban tradition of cigar making. The factory workers had another tradition, however: while they rolled, a “lector” would read to them, hour after hour. The action of this play is set in motion when a new lector is hired.

The workers become divided in their loyalties as the factory’s owners adopt new, mechanized manufacturing methods. As the lector reads from Anna Karenina, a famous novel by Leo Tolstoy, the workers are affected greatly. Cruz masterfully ties in

themes from the novel to the personal journeys of his characters Anna in the Tropics won a Pulitzer Prize in 2003, making Cruz the first Latino American to win the coveted award.

The production is a joint venture of the Burien Little Theatre and Latino Theatre Projects (LTP), a Seattle-based nonprofit whose mission is to inform, enlighten, and engage audiences through the dramatic presentation of thought-provoking literature, a genre LTP calls “useful theatre,” or Teatro Útil. LTP also engages the Latino community in a variety of theater-based activities to empower and integrate its members through artistic expression.

Performances of Anna in the Tropics take place at Burien Little Theater (437 S.W. 144th St., Burien) Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

A LAVENDER LOVER’S PARADISE Sequim offers a feast of festivals. One of the most popular is the annual Lavender Festival. Consisting of several lavender farms that share an easy-to-follow common route (shuttles and buses are available as well), this event celebrates everything lavender, from the expected (lotions, soaps, sachets) to the more surprising (ice cream, sausage, lemonade, wines, cheeses). Learn the difference between culinary lavender and the types used for scent. While most lavender plants produce edible buds, certain kinds are definitely more delectable and digestible. Traveling to different farms is recommended, as each one has different booths to offer and unique demonstrations on the production and use of items such as lavender oil, lavender water, or lavender flavored baked goods. For a retail assortment of lavender products, visit All Things Lavender (there’s also a Seattle location, at 76 Pike St.). While the festival was extensive, not everything was lavender-related. The Northwest Raptor Center (www.nwraptorcenter.com) also had a booth and display.

This society is dedicated to the rescue and recovery of injured wildlife – especially the raptor family. Rescued owls, hawks, and falcons were some of the beautiful and majestic birds on display.

Whether it’s a day trip or a “staycation” overnighter, there is plenty to do on the north shore of the Olympic Peninsula. Take a ferryboat, enjoy the beautiful water, and let it prepare you for the many delights that can be found on the other side of the Sound.

by Aiden Klein SGN A&E Writer TONY TRIPOLI: DIRTY, SEXY, FUNNY RE-BAR August 17 and 18 “Stand-up comedy is just like meth – you’ll eventually go broke and lose all your teeth.” But that will not stop Tony Tripoli from making his second appearance here in Seattle on August 17 and 18 at Re-bar (1114 Howell St.), where he will present his

stand-up show, “Tony Tripoli: Dirty, Sexy, Funny.” Yes, the smoking-hot lead writer for Joan Rivers is ready to dish it up with Seattleites once again, and no topic is off limits. “There’s a lot of shit out there that’s wrong and I think we need to talk about it.

For instance, that thing that Mrs. Rivers calls a face. Now lets discuss,” Tony joked with SGN last week.

For those of you not familiar with this comedic genius, it’s time to wake up! Tony writes hilarious jokes for Rivers, which she

uses in her own stand-up act as well as on her reality show, Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best (which just got renewed for a third season on WE TV), and Fashion Police on the E! channel. Tony also has written for the Style Network’s hit show The Dish and has appeared on Kathy Griffin’s My Life on the D-List (but it’s best not to bring that up).

“I’ve always been completely openly Gay and out of the closet,” Tony told SGN. “Let’s be honest, I didn’t have a lot of other choices. From across the room no one is going to think I’m a lumberjack. My television agents know not to submit me for any commercials or sitcoms unless the role is a Gay role. With straight roles, I spend the whole time trying not to ‘walk that way’ or ‘talk that way’ and it takes all the fun out of it. There is a lot of bullshit you have to go through to actually get to perform, but once you are finally performing that’s the good part. So to do something that will take the fun out of it – why would you do that to yourself?

“I really attribute my career to Joan,” Tony went on. “I remember my mother wanted me to do stand-up comedy for a charity event and I killed it. There were some pretty important people in the crowd that night and later I was asked if I wanted to write jokes for Joan Rivers, and the rest is history.”

Prior to that eventful night, Tony was working as a Chippendales dancer. “It was very Magic Mike, as in petty and juvenile,” he recalled, saying the stripper world is very competitive and cutthroat. “They’re worse than showgirls throwing marbles on the stage. I did it for approval and to boost my self-esteem,” Tony joked. “I have to say, though, it was very interesting to see the ‘straight’ entertainers shave each other’s butt cracks. Not to mention the owner, whose fashion and personality were stuck in the mid-’90s,” he added.

“In my show, I just merely tell the truth,”

Tony said. “It’s a show for everybody, both Gay and straight. Not too many straights though – after a certain number it just becomes a little uncomfortable.”

Tony has performed all over the U.S. and will even perform at your house, “as long as the check clears,” he said.

“Living in Los Angeles has really given me a lot of opportunities at being a fabulous homo,” Tony told SGN, adding that his shining moment was when he had the chance to sing Cole Porter songs for the American Plumbers Association, accompanied onstage by a dozen toilets.

“I get to open for Joan Rivers with a soldout crowd of 3,000 one week, and then the following weeks I’m doing shows at your local dive bar such as Re-bar. Sadly though, I think I’m the only Gay man in Hollywood who hasn’t had sex with John Travolta. Not much into big ol’ bottoms,” the comedic genius joked.

“In my show, I’m going to address a lot of issues, one being ‘shit that fags say’ and the oh-so-controversial Chic-fil-A.” Tony admits to being a fast-food junkie when he goes back home to Arizona to visit family.

“It’s a bummer. All this time I thought it was the peanut oil that made their food taste oh-so-good, but it was their hate for me that was the secret ingredient.”

Laughter is the best remedy for any ailment, and whether it’s heartbreak or flatulence you suffer from, you’re bound to be yourself again after a night with Tony.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE BOURNE LEGACY Opens August 10 At the same time Jason Bourne is running around dismantling the CIA’s clandestine Treadstone and Black Briar programs in New York, a shady outside operative, retired Col. Eric Byer, USAF (Edward Norton), is instructing his team, as well as a mysterious government bigwig – fellow retired military man Adm. Mark Turso, USN (Stacy Keach) – that they’ve got a bigger problem than just a single man on a mission of vengeance.

They need to erase not only all memory of the programs Bourne was a part of, but the ones his training and development led to as well.

Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) is in the wrong place at the right time. It’s blind luck that the highly trained agent was in the middle of Alaskan nowhere when the kill order came down and, using every facet of his unique skill set, he’s able to escape, wondering what is going on. But he needs to refill his medications – the drugs his superiors who have augmented his abilities have gotten him borderline addicted to. When the woman in charge of his medical evaluation, Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), is also marked for assassination, Cross knows it is up to him to save her, and in so doing hopefully get refills to satiate his growing need.

One thing leads to another, of course, a gigantic conspiracy far larger than anything Jason Bourne ever could have imagined ultimately unveiled as Cross and Shearing make their way across the globe trying to avoid detection. It’s interesting, and even a

Latest ‘Bourne’ film a familiar legacy great deal of fun, but there is no avoiding the fact that The Bourne Legacy, an expansion of the universe set forth by The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum – but without that trio’s titular hero and star – does feel a bit on the overly familiar side. As spectacular as some of the beats are, as great as many of the escapes, close calls, and bits of intellectual ingenuity can be, the simple truth is that we’ve seen all of this before, and even though we’re presented with a new cast of characters, the situations themselves present more than a little déjà vu.

SAME WORLD, BUT BIGGER But give credit where credit is due. Director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, Duplicity) has had a hand in all of the previous films and he knows this world inside and out. Instead of going with a reboot – and simply jettisoning Matt Damon for another actor like the James Bond flicks have done for five-plus decades – he and his brother and co-screenwriter Dan Gilroy (The Fall) attempt to broaden the scenario, making the world Jason Bourne inhabited a much larger entity. They’ve set the action during what is essentially the last third of The Bourne Ultimatum, showing how Jason Bourne’s New York demolition derby affected the shadier aspects of U.S. intelligence-gathering.

Better than that, Gilroy has managed to make this new direction of the series entirely his own while maintaining tonal fidelity with the trio that preceded it. Old characters played by Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Albert Finney, and Scott Glenn float in and out, while new ones portrayed by Norton, Renner, Weisz, Keach, Zeljko Ivanek, Don-

na Murphy, and Corey Stoll slowly take center stage. It is an efficient movie, electrically paced (even at 135 minutes), beautifully shot by Robert Elswit (The Town), enthusiastically edited by another Gilroy brother, John (Warrior), and scored to within an inch of its life by the great James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games).

The movie works far better than it probably has a right to. I was never bored by the proceedings and was constantly curious what was going to happen next and where Gilroy and company were taking us. Like the other entries in the series, the action propels the narrative, is organic to the material, and doesn’t feel pre-designed so that the script would have to be molded around it. While a lot is taken on faith, and while many of the motivations are strictly of the

surface-level variety, this is still a characterdriven enterprise through and through, and as such it’s extremely difficult not to become intertwined in the labyrinthine mess Cross and Shearing find themselves ensnared in.

Does that make The Bourne Legacy necessary? Not really, but that doesn’t make it any less entertaining. It may be following familiar and in some ways iconic footsteps, but Gilroy is doing it with flair, skill, and panache to burn. The world of Jason Bourne has just gotten a heck of a lot larger, and if audiences find themselves drawn into it like I think they will be, I for one am curious to see just how far down this rabbit hole Cross, Shearer, Byer – and maybe, at some point, even Bourne himself – are willing to descend.

Bass by Hans Glawischnig was funky. E.J. Strickland’s drums were rhythmic. High points were “I’m Old Fashioned,” “Who Wants Ice Cream,” and an original, “The Change, My Girl.”

LOS LOBOS Cuteness joined Mercy for Los Lobos at Woodland Park Zoo, August 1. Cuteness liked the warm-up band, Steve Earle and the Dukes, because his songs had a political conscience and he had women in his band.

Standouts among his songs were “Waiting on the Sky to Fall,” “Galway Girl,” and “Guitar Town.”

Los Lobos had powerful voices. They sang songs in Spanish and English, mixing new and old ones. Memorable tunes were “Kiko and the Lavender Moon,” “Te Canto con Amor,” and “Roses Raining.”

MACEO PARKER Mercy enjoyed Maceo Parker’s funky sixpiece band at the Triple Door, August 2. She liked the fact that the waitress remembered to provide candles for light to take notes without being asked.

Maceo Parker’s saxophone defended his doctoral dissertation. Trumpet by Lee Hogan was hot. Bass by George Winston was soulful. Gerard Mann’s guitar was out there. Gary Williams’ keyboards were luscious. Vocals by Darlene Parker were sweet.

People were up and dancing. High points were “A Donde Fiesta,” “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” and “Stand By Me.” THE KINSEY SICKS Reality joined Mercy for the Kinsey Sicks’ show, “Electile Dysfunction: The Kinsey Sicks for President,” at the Triple Door, August 4. He liked their broad satire and excellent harmonies. Mercy found the drag queens singing barbershop music fun.

They opened with “Vote for Me” (I Wasn’t Born in Kenya”). “Tsk Tsk,” “Eliminate the Schools,” “Peoria,” “Yahweh,” “Everyone’s Coming Up Noses,” “Love Child,” “South of the Border,” “We Arm the World,” “I Will Watch You Tube,” “T’aint It Love?,” “Gonorrhea,” “Be a Slut,” “Sikh to Sheikh,” and “Sell the Poor” followed nicely.

LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO Cuteness joined Mercy for Ladysmith Black Mambazo at ZooTunes August 5, on a beautiful evening. The male vocal group had tight harmonies. They were founded in 1960 by Professor Joseph Shabalala to spread the culture of South Africa. The chorus sings in Zulu. They include sons of the original group members. Translations of their song titles include “This Woman Is Beautiful,” “A Girl’s Name Meaning Hope,” and “Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain.” They also performed the Paul Simon song “Homeless.” The group received a standing ova-

tion.

Another South African group, the Johnny Clegg Band, also performed. Memorable tunes were “Love in the Time of Gaza,” “Bullets for Bafazan,” “The Crossing,” “Jongosi,” and “Great Heart.”

Paula Fuga: Taking Hawaiian music to the next level

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Over the years, the traditional music culture of Hawaii has evolved to welcome folk, rock, and pop elements. Paula Fuga is an artist who merges an organic mix of traditional and contemporary styles, which is getting her noticed. A singer and instrumentalist who has recorded with Jack Johnson and Ziggy Marley, her voice will rock you gently to sleep like a backyard hammock on a lazy afternoon.

Well-known throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Fuga is gaining exposure on the mainland, thanks in part to a duet with Johnson called “Country Road” and a handful of tours that continues to introduce new fans to her wonderful music. The Oahubased artist is scheduled to perform live with the Mike Love Trio and special guests at The Crocodile (www.thecrocodile.com) on August 14. I caught up with her via email this week while on the road, and here’s what she shared with me inside The Music Lounge.

Rodriguez: Have you ever performed in Seattle before?

Fuga: I’ve performed in Seattle a couple of times. The first time was with some friends from Hawaii, a group called The Girlas, with Ernie Cruz Jr. on percussion.

We planned a winter tour in January 2007 and Seattle was our last stop. By that show, the cold weather had taken its toll on us.

We all had the sniffles and just couldn’t get warm. I remember that chill even while we

were performing.

Rodriguez: What comes to mind when you hear the word Seattle?

Fuga: When I hear the word Seattle, I think of coffee, whales, donuts, and Dave Matthews, in that order. Then I think of the second time I played there, with Hawaiibased roots reggae band Ooklah the Moc. We opened for Clinton Fearon and Groundation. The vibes were only positive and it was a great show.

Rodriguez: I saw you play the Kokua Festival two years ago. Do you still perform with Jack Johnson from time to time?

Fuga: I’m truly blessed to have a friend like Jack – he always finds ways to include me in his projects and shows. Living five minutes away, Jack calls me up to record with him and join him for different benefits within the community. I’m certainly grateful for those opportunities and am continually inspired by his humble, earth-loving, and generous ways.

Rodriguez: Tell us about your upcoming show at The Crocodile. What music can we expect to hear, and how long will your set be?

Fuga: This is the very first time that I am touring with my guitarist and friend Mike Love, along with our friend and percussionist Sam Ites. We’ve been playing together from the beginning of my career, before I released my debut album, and we are happy to finally be able to travel outside of Hawaii together to share our music with everyone.

Rodriguez: Do you have a regular performing gig in Hawaii, somewhere that

mainland visitors can see you play?

Fuga: Mike, Sam, and I play together monthly on Maui at a place called Stella Blues in Kihei. It’s a very intimate, sit-down dinner show where we are able to share stories and crack jokes in between songs. We three are a playful bunch and have a lot of fun when we jam together. We also play with a couple of different roots-reggae bands, as well as solo shows apart from each other. I’ve just started playing a regular solo gig at a place called Surfer, The Bar, at Turtle Bay Resort, about 10 minutes from my home on the North Shore of Oahu.

Rodriguez: For those who haven’t heard your music before, can you describe your style? You also play ukulele, right?

Fuga: I’ve always called my sound Oregano Blues, which stands for original music influenced by reggae and rhythm and blues.

But if I had to describe Mike Love’s sound, I would say that it’s full, dynamic, and joyful.

His lyrics are conscious, thought-provoking, and incredibly clever. I play ukulele on most of my songs and enjoy setting it down sometimes to just sing and focus on that radiant, healing energy in the music. It doesn’t come from us – it flows through us.

continued from cover Azzopardi: I don’t know if you’ve heard, but some of your fans are Gay. Diamandis: [laughs] About 97 percent of my shows’ audience! It’s so fantastic.

Truthfully, I’d say 60 percent Gay, 40 percent teen girls. And two percent 50-year-old creepy men in the back!

Azzopardi: When did your relationship start with the Gay audience?

Diamandis: On the first album I definitely did have a Gay fan base, but it was much smaller, because I’m a very flamboyant character and the shows are really theatrical. But I don’t really talk about the whole Gay community thing, because I don’t want to be a cliché pop star saying things like, “I love my Gays!” But the truth is it’s a really supportive fan base and they’re making this tour so special.

Azzopardi: How about just going the Bisexual route?

Diamandis: That’s on the way! [laughs] Azzopardi: What was the Gay scene like where you’re from, in Wales?

Diamandis: Are you joking? I lived in a village of 200 people! [laughs] I didn’t really see any kind of Gay scene until I moved to London when I was 19. I was the only Gay in the village!

Azzopardi: You’ve said that you relate to your Gay fans, and obviously they relate back to you. Can you talk about that?

Diamandis: Again, I think it’s part of the camp nature of my first [album], but I think with this album in particular, it lends itself to that more. On a lyrical level, with the first album I wrote a lot about feeling like an outsider and like I wasn’t accepted for who I was, and that upset me very much – so perhaps that’s why. If you’ve dealt with discrimination in your life, you probably really connect to some of those feelings. Also, on this album, a lot of the humor has really caught the Gay community’s attention.

You’re very humorous.

Azzopardi: As far as the whole cartoon persona goes, do you think your Gay audience appreciates your flamboyant look and fashion more than your mainstream audience?

Diamandis: No, but Gay people pick up on things a little bit quicker and sense stuff

that is potentially underground or quite cultish and is going to become bigger before a mainstream audience will. But everyone likes a pretty picture.

Azzopardi: What was your reaction to seeing Cazwell and Amanda Lepore do a video for “Primadonna”?

Diamandis: Oh my god, I died! I love Amanda Lepore so much. I was just like, “Is this real?” Because Amanda Lepore really isn’t real, obviously. I listen to her quite a lot. There’s a song called “Cotton Candy” and it’s just fantastic.

Azzopardi: Have you seen a drag queen do one of your songs before?

Diamandis: I haven’t … yet.

Azzopardi: What tips do you have for Marina drag queens?

Diamandis: You have to have gigantic roots, paint the heart on your face with some eyeliner, and then cut a strip of lashes from MAC and put four on each lower lash.

Then use a nice bubblegum pink lipstick.

Azzopardi: Tell me you named the first album The Family Jewels because of the pun.

Diamandis: That was the sole reason for it. But I was so lily-white-skinned that when I began I absolutely couldn’t admit it to the press in case my family heard or my Dad heard and thought, “How rude! You can’t be making those dirty puns.” So I never really explained the meaning of it, but I just quite liked that my album title was basically Bollocks.

Azzopardi: After the first album was released, you admitted to being bummed that it didn’t live up to your expectations commercially. What were your expectations with The Family Jewels, and are you feeling more positive about Electra Heart?

Diamandis: Looking back on all of those interviews from that era, I look like I’m on the edge of a nervous breakdown. [laughs] So I think that might have influenced my promotional duties at the time. I was really stuck in a rut, and I think I was ambitiously disappointed.

It wasn’t that it didn’t do well. Looking back, I can’t actually believe that I sold that many records on an album that was pretty alternative except for two of the songs. I guess I am really ambitious and I want to be one of the greats – and there’s nothing wrong with being honest about that. With this album, I didn’t really have any of those expectations. I’ve let go of a lot of that baggage while writing the album. I’ve just changed my perspective completely.

Azzopardi: When did you realize that you wanted to be famous?

Diamandis: I didn’t really interpret it in that way. At nine or 10 years old, I knew from the bottom of my heart I was going to be an entertainer, in that I wanted to perform in some way – but I didn’t really know if I would be a dancer or an actress.

I definitely didn’t really think about being a singer until I was 15, and then I knew what I was going to do with my life.

Azzopardi: Fame and the media’s effect on us come up a lot in your songs. Why are you so interested in exploring those topics?

Diamandis: To be honest, it’s less about fame and more about praise and performance. If you look at all of the lyrical themes that are connected with that subject, it’s more about theatrical terms – like prima donna or the starring role in theater – so it’s not about being famous or being known. It’s more about feeling like you’re No. 1.

I was in a relationship where I felt like I was second-best and I just thought, “I’m not going to stick around.” I was completely in love with him, but I just walked away.

You’re the only person who can look out for you, and no one should really settle for second-best. It almost seems like it’s an obnoxious thing to say for some reason. But I don’t think it is. [laughs] Azzopardi: Who inspired “Teen Idle”?

Did you have anyone in mind for that song, or the rest of the album?

Diamandis: There’s a bit of Brit-Brit on the album. I mean, “Bubblegum Bitch” is basically Britney Spears peeled inside out.

Britney is our teen idol, so that’s what we all relate that term with. It’s just so strange how everyone relates to that song [“Teen Idle”] – that’s been the biggest shock of the album, and I’m so happy about that.

Azzopardi: You didn’t expect that?

Diamandis: No, I thought the lyrics were too specific and obscure. But that’s the nicest surprise as a writer sometimes – when people come to you and you realize that everyone just goes through the same shit in one way or another.

Azzopardi: You were looking to Marilyn Monroe and Marie Antoinette for this album, too. How did they work into it?

Diamandis: That was more of a visual thing. I’ve been looking for people who have always been portrayed with a certain duality to them in public. I’m really interested in that for some reason. I think villains are interesting. I wanted Electra Heart to have a villainous side to her.

Azzopardi: Electra Heart is an alter ego?

Diamandis: I don’t know. I always think “alter ego” means something completely different. I think it’s a character that I formulated in order to be able to talk about things that I was too embarrassed to talk about.

Azzopardi: How much of that character is actually you?

Diamandis: Quite a lot. It has to be. If you made it, then it’s real. If you’ve created it, it has to come from somewhere. I think people make stories up, but it has to evolve from some truth somewhere along the line. It’s just like “Primadonna” – there are parts of my personality that are like that. I am kind of precocious, but it’s not exactly something that you would market yourself as being, because it’s not a very likable character. Maybe Electra Heart allows me to act or to write in a certain way and to write about universal truths.

Azzopardi: Without seeming too narcissistic?

Diamandis: Exactly. Because “Primadonna” is a fun song, and people see the irony in it but also the truth – that we all know sometimes we can be like that or we know someone who can be.

Azzopardi: Is Electra Heart more sexually adventurous than you? Would she have a Lesbian encounter?

Diamandis: [laughs] No, I don’t think she would. But I do portray her as a bit slutty, and I don’t really know why! Maybe I’m trying to live through her because I’ve never been one-night-stand-y or anything.

I’m a stage mom trying to live through her daughter.

In addition to letting the greater Filipino community know “we’re here,” he wanted the LGBT Filipinos of Seattle to know that the greater community would embrace them and the pageant. His words seem to have been proven true from the turnout at the event – 250 people or more.

“We have a community that will support them,” Ganda told SGN. “Their parents will accept them.”

“We do this because the Filipino Community of Seattle is an organization that believes in inclusiveness and justice for all,” said Alma Kern, president of FCS, adding that the only issue she has with the pageant is that “our Gay contestants are more beautiful than me.”

The pageant’s competition categories included creative/cultural dress, swimwear, Miss Congeniality (or Miss Friendship), evening gown, and a Q&A. When the contestants weren’t onstage, former titleholders and contestants such as Isabel Lauchengco (Ms. FCS 2005), Kari Munoz, and Jessa Zaragoza (Ms. FCS 2000) entertained. Special guest performers included Atasha Manila and Gaysha Starr.

“The Miss Gay FCS title is the oldest running ethnic minority title in Seattle. I am proud to be part of a strong history of Queer Filipinos and Asians like Lola Maria Maharlika, Gaysha Starr, Asia, and the legendary Smokee,” Aleksa Manila told SGN.

PAGEANT RAISES AWARENESS “Although these events provide entertainment for the public, they also provide an avenue for raising awareness and understanding of the intersection of Queer [and] API cultures. It’s an opportunity to inspire young Gay and Transgender Asians to build self-esteem and confidence.”

Ganda agreed and said that to him, one of the best parts of the pageant is that it shows LGBT Filipinos who are new immigrants to this country that they will be accepted in the community.

“We have to reach out and be a part,” Ganda told SGN. “There are lot of ways we [FCS] help new immigrants and this is one of them.”

Judges at the pageant included prominent local Filipino business owners and professionals as well as Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse, and Seattle police officer Jojo Cambronero, whom Ganda described as his “dream man – tall, dark, and married.”

DANNY VEGA REMEMBERED Before the winner was crowned, a posthumous award was presented to the niece of Danny Vega, who died last fall after a savage beating by three aggressors, who remain at large. Vega had competed for the title of Ms. Gay FCS himself many years ago.

“It means a tremendous amount of compassion to recognize Danny Vega’s gift of laughter, love and light. Danny was a beloved community member, both in the Filipino and Gay community. It was beautiful to witness his family to receive the award on his behalf,” Aleksa Manila told SGN. “Danny was the known veteran competitor. We competed side by side in 2001 from Creative Costume to Evening Gown. I remember his smile and positive energy during the pageant and even before and after.

He remained a friend and often opened his home for various social events.”

“It’s an honor to win a title that’s coming from my home country,” said Jada Starr.

“It was a fun pageant. … What I want to do with this title is not only represent the Filipino community, but the Gay community of Seattle.”

Starr is no stranger to pageantry and has held the Ms. Gay Seattle, Ms. Broadway, Ms. Neighbours, and Ms. Rainbow Pride Tacoma titles.

The last FCS pageant was held in 2005, but Ganda said members of the Filipino community were clamoring for another.

The pageant serves as a fundraiser for FCS. “I want to do it again, I want to raise funds again,” said Ganda.

our very own backyard: Seattle-based hiphop recording artist Macklemore, who is helping with this effort in his own way.

“When I was in the third grade, I thought that I was Gay/ ’cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight,” are the opening lyrics in his new hit single, “Same Love,” in which he voices his support for LGBT equality.

With over half a million plays within the first few days of its release, “Same Love” is the most successful record Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis, straight allies to the LGBT community, have put out thus far.

Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, is a music festival sensation and a fixture on the local hip-hop scene. He’s performed at the Capitol Hill Block Party, Bumbershoot, and Sasquatch, and has toured across the U.S. and Europe. Macklemore has steadily worked on his music career since 2000. He was recently named “Unsigned Hype” in The Source magazine and part of the “Freshman Class of 2012” in XXL magazine – solid recognitions in the world of independent hip-hop.

I spoke with Macklemore, 29, about “Same Love” and asked him to elaborate on the meaning behind it. The story begins when Macklemore was just eight years old.

As a boy, Macklemore was confused about what it meant to be Gay. This was due, in part, to a collision of religious beliefs and societal stereotypes in his head. Being an artist, he was, as he puts it, “a crazy kid who was super into dressing up, musicals,

acting, performing, and always wanting to be on stage.”

“I was just an eccentric, eclectic little kid,” he said.

In addition, he was aware that several members of his family were Gay. “I really cared about how my hair looked when I was a little kid,” he recalled. Because children don’t think in terms of sexual orientation, the young boy deduced that because he liked music, was an artist, and cared about what he looked like, he must be Gay. Macklemore grew up in the Catholic religion. Although he didn’t fully understand at age 8 what it meant to be Gay, he did understand that, according to the church, it was not OK. He has since renounced the church, writing on his official website that Catholicism is “easily [becoming] a platform for hate and prejudice.”

In “Same Love” Macklemore states, “if you preach hate at the service those words aren’t anointed/ and that holy water that you soak in is then poisoned.”

The influence of hip-hop music, a genre that has been known to have a general haze of homophobia clouding it, made a huge impact on his life. “Unfortunately,” said Macklemore, “intolerance of the Gay community in hip-hop is widespread.”

“The best rappers use homophobic language on albums that critics rave about, making hip-hop and homophobia inextricably linked,” he added.

However, Macklemore vowed to do his part in changing the face of hip-hop into a more inclusive genre of music.

“I am aware of how comfortable I, and many other straight people, have become in staying silent on this issue,” he admitted. “If we choose to not speak on an issue of injustice out of fear, or how our peers might perceive us, we’re part of the problem.”

Ditching that fear, Macklemore has taken a firm stance as a straight ally, making appearances at shows and photo shoots sporting T-shirts with pro-LGBT messaging such as “Vote Love” and “Legalize Gay Marriage,” and featuring his Gay uncle, John Haggerty, and his partner, Sean, on one of the “Same Love” artworks. “Approve Ref. 74” is boldly written on the record’s face.

From family members to new and old fans, Macklemore has been showered with praise for the courageous act of putting out this song. Haggerty told SGN, “I couldn’t be prouder of my nephew, Ben.” I spoke with another local Seattle rapper, Larry Hawkins, who happens to be a Macklemore fan and who confirmed that Macklemore’s support for the LGBT community, and his ask that people Approve Referendum 74 in November, has brought him more respect among the local hip-hop community.

“I don’t care who you are, [rappers in Seattle] are not doing it big like Macklemore,” said Hawkins. “He is the face of Seattle right now, and for him to come out with a song like ‘Same Love’ not only opens new doors for him, but also opens up the interpretation of what hip-hop music can be.

“I respect him 100%,” continued Hawkins.

When I asked Macklemore how “Same Love” is different from his other songs, he said he had wanted to write this song for the past year but didn’t know how to approach it. But then he realized that the best approach would be to tell how homosexuality and homophobia had played out in his own life. Accompanied by Mary Lambert’s satin voice on the chorus and an intro with a lullaby piano, “Same Love” is a hit. It’s unforgettable and simply makes you feel good and hopeful about equality’s future.

“Same Love” joins Macklemore to other straight hip-hop artists such as Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Tyler the Creator, and others who have come out in support of LGBT rights.

On October 9, Macklemore is scheduled to release his first full-length album, The Heist, produced by Ryan Lewis. “Same Love” will be featured on the album, but the single is available right now on iTunes.
