Openly Gay film, TV, and stage actor moves into music

Cheyenne Jackson is busy.

Really, really busy. The openly Gay actor, a former Seattle resident, is now spreading his wings as a recording artist, releasing back-to-back singles (“Drive,” “Before You”) that will be included on a yet-to-be-titled EP or album. You might recognize Jackson from such films as the Oscar-nominated United 93 and this year’s Lola Versus, or maybe from his TV roles on Glee, Ugly Betty, and 30 Rock, or stage productions like Xanadu and All Shook Up. All this aside from being a backup singer for Liza Minnelli and Vanessa Williams.

His most current project is a Liberace biopic for HBO, scheduled for a 2013 premiere. When not working, Jackson spends time with husband Monte Lapka at their New York City home.

Hamlin SGN A&E Writer MICHAEL FEINSTEIN BENAROYA HALL July 27 The most popular, important, and influential male cabaret performer of the past 25 years, Michael Feinstein has visited Seattle many times. SGN readers may fondly remember his appearance with the Seattle Men’s Chorus, where the openly Gay superstar opened his guest spotlight with, “Well, I just found 185 new boyfriends.”

Feinstein, who feels he has been “burned” by the media over the years, limits his press interviews to two per city. In a visit to Seattle some years back, he picked SGN (and The Seattle Times) over the daily P-I and two city weeklies with higher circulation figures. (Years later, this journalist had a chance to ask Feinstein the reason for his choice. He laughed and said, “SGN was a natural for me, and Bobby Short and Eartha Kitt said, ‘There’s this guy in Seattle who knows what cabaret is and has been and should be.’” What an honor.)

Feinstein’s July 27 performance at Benaroya Hall, billed as a tribute to Frank Sinatra (his latest CD is titled The Sinatra Project, Vol. II: The Good Life), found a near-capacity crowd – Gay men, straight couples, and music lovers of all stripes – out in full force. It was a first-rate, first-class salute to the Great American Songbook. Feinstein travels with his own musicians, a 17-piece big-band orchestra that simply couldn’t be better. He is a class act in every department – talent, looks, and wardrobe.

A terrific overture started the high-spirited evening. Feinstein quickly entered to George and Ira Gershwin’s immortal “’S Wonderful.” Hit after hit followed – the classic “Let There Be You,” “Maybe This Time” (from the film version of Cabaret), Benny Goodman’s iconic “Sing, Sing, Sing.” Act Two opened with “More (Theme from Mondo Cane)” – a beautiful song and a huge hit in its era, from a justly forgotten movie.

The long-awaited Sinatra tribute proved to be a “Greatest Hits” retrospective covering four decades, from the 1940s into the ’70s, featuring songs recorded by or otherwise associated with the Chairman of the Board.

“Fly Me to the Moon” (officially titled “In Other Words,” Feinstein charmingly noted) was an obvious audience favorite. It was followed by “Come Fly With Me,” “Witchcraft,” “A Foggy Day (in London Town),” “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “Summer Wind,” “All or Nothing at All,” “I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plans,” the sad and weary “Angel Eyes,” the melancholy “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road),” “Night and Day,” “You Make Me Feel So Young,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” and “That’s Life.” “New York, New York” was strangely short, the reason for which later became apparent.

At the piano, with or without vocals, or at the stage-center microphone, Feinstein ruled the night. “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” Irving Berlin’s first hit (in 1911), literally stopped the show. A lovely tribute to Nat “King” Cole brought “When I Fall in Love” and “My Foolish Heart” center-stage for an emotionally charged change. Then –

yes, there was more – a Louis Armstrong tribute featured “Hello, Dolly!” complete with perfectly rendered, politically incorrect accents. Another quiet outing followed with the Gershwins’ “(My Sweet) Embraceable You,” “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” and a wistful “Someone to Watch Over Me.” “Summertime,” from Porgy & Bess, opened with a topical quip – “Today, we call it Fifty Shades of “Summertime.” Bows, applause, more bows, more smiles. Exit music. And then – the topper of the evening. “It’s a song

made famous by Frank Sinatra but forever owned by my good friend, Liza Minnelli,” Feinstein charmed, setting the crowd up for the obvious. To say that “New York, New York” blew the roof off Benaroya is a serious understatement.

Tracy Nelson Mercy and Cuteness are really looking forward to seeing vocalist Tracy Nelson at Jazz Alley. Band members are Larry Guthrie (keyboards), Chris Leighton (drums), John Morton (guitar), Garey Shelton (bass), and Kelly Harland (backing vocals). They are touring in support of her new release, Victim of the Blues. They will be at Jazz Alley on August 7 and 8.

Nelson has been recording the blues since 1969. In 1974, her duet with Willie Nelson, “After the Fire Is Gone,” was nominated for a Grammy. Her 1998 collaboration with Rounder Records labelmates Marcia Ball and Irma Thomas, Sing It, garnered a second Grammy nomination.

Spyro Gyra Mercy and Cuteness are also looking forward to seeing Spyro Gyra at Jazz Alley.

Band members include Jay Beckenstein (sax), Tom Schuman (keyboards), Julio Fernandez (guitar), Scott Ambush (bass), and Bonny B. (percussion/vocals). They are touring in support of their newest release, A Foreign Affair. They will be there August 9-12.

Spyro Gyra is an American jazz fusion band that was formed in the 1970s. “Shaker Song” and “Morning Dance” are their most famous hit singles.

Celebrating 39 Years!

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer TOTAL RECALL Opens August 3 Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) doesn’t feel like himself. He’s having strange dreams of an escapade involving gunfire, explosions, and a mysterious lithe and sexy woman named Melina (Jessica Biel) who is nothing at all like his sweet and sensitive wife Lori (Kate Beckinsale). Against the advice of his best friend, Harry (Bokeem Woodbine), to put some of these demons to rest the bedraggled factory worker takes a trip to the fake memory implantation clinic Rekall to live out his fantasies. Seems as harmless an idea as any, and for the life of him he can’t come up with a reason not to at least check the place out.

Big mistake. Next thing Doug knows he’s being hunted by the very wife he thought adored him; saved by the mystery woman who, he was certain, was a figment of his imagination; and discovers he might be the central cog in a planet-wide battle for control between the iron-fisted Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) and the enigmatic rebel messiah Matthias (Bill Nighy). But is it real? Or is this all just a fantasy buried within his subconscious by the folks at Rekall? After all, the fate of the entire Earth can’t rest in the hands of a single man.

Or can it?

Len Wiseman’s adrenaline-fueled remake of the Paul Verhoeven/Arnold Schwarzenegger favorite Total Recall plays more like a souped-up futuristic version of The Bourne Identity or The Long Kiss Goodnight more than it does anything else. Only

Total Recall : just forget it the barest bones of Philip K. Dick’s original story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale remain, and while there are plenty of gentle nods in the direction of the 1990 flick, the only allusions to Mars here are made in sarcastic jest. No, the man behind the Underworld adventures and Live Free or Die Hard isn’t particularly interested in breaking rules, treading new ground, or delivering anything we haven’t seen before. He wants to blow stuff up, break a ton of glass, and shoot a whole heck of a lot of guns, and by and large on that front he gleefully succeeds.

But where is the story? Where is the mystery? Where is the common sense or anything even approaching a decent – let alone good – idea? The film runs almost on autopilot, the plot mechanics beholden to all the heavy artillery and wildly ambitious stunts.

Nothing about this movie feels, sounds, or looks organic, and as beautifully realized (from a visual standpoint) as all of it might be, it’s all in service to a story not even slightly worthy of the effort.

There are moments, of course, and both Farrell and Beckinsale throw themselves into the chaos with laudable abandon. But the script, by Kurt Wimmer (Salt) and Mark Bomback (Unstoppable), is a total mess, reveling in clichés that were passé back when Schwarzenegger was making Raw Deal and Commando. There is a freezedried silliness to everything that’s stupefying in its blandness, and not even Cranston or Nighy can help pull this film out of the abyss.

What’s truly weird is just how boring all of this is. Wiseman can stage an action sequence as good as anyone, and unlike many

of his contemporaries he doesn’t over-edit to the point of headache-inducing confusion, but there is something so rudimentary about all of the running, jumping, falling,

kicking, and punching – something so tired about all the crashes, booms, and bangs – that the resulting two-hour enterprise has an oddly antiseptic quality, making Total Recall instantly, and ironically, forgettable.

That’s the basic story behind her documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, but as it concerns a figure as internationally lauded as this one, there’s far more to it than that.

At the same time, as big as this story is, as massive as the themes are, I can’t say I know any more about him now than I did beforehand. I can’t help but be impressed – what Weiwei is fighting for stirred me to my core, and his fight is one I wholeheartedly endorse – but as a human being he remains an enigma, and on that front I can’t help but feel a tiny bit frustrated.

Still, a lot of what Klayman was able to document is stunning. Weiwei, the man behind the magnificent Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium that was the focal point for the 2008 Summer Games, is a fascinating figure, and the lengths he goes to in order to speak his mind and make his opinions known is staggering. His work crafting a memorial for the more than 5,000 children who were lost in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake is mind-blowing, while his aggressively passive attempts to document police intimidation and corruption are something else indeed.

Klayman shows all of this with ease and restraint, allowing all of the footage to speak for itself, whether captured by her own camera or by Weiwei (or one of his devoted pupils). She does not comment – each moment speaks so clearly there really isn’t any need for her to do so. As an activist, what this man does, how devoted he is to getting truth out into the world (his Twitter following is second to none) – all of it borders on unfathomable, and the filmmaker showcases this fact with unhurried ease.

But the man himself? His human failings?

What drives him? What makes him such an extraordinary, world-renowned artist? I’m not sure I know the answers to those questions. Klayman shows some of his flaws, at

least as a husband, but she does so in a way that makes them seem like passing asides not worthy of interest – speed bumps that only hinder the portrait of the artist as a lofty figure worthy of adulation.

This is a problem, of that there is no denying. Most of the great human beings we have celebrated over the centuries had personal failings of one sort of another, and it was in those faults that we are able to grasp a greater understanding of the person as a whole and what it was exactly that made them great in the first place. No one is perfect, and while Klayman’s film doesn’t remotely suggest Weiwei is, it doesn’t spend much time looking for shades of grey.

Still, this documentary is compulsively addicting. Once it starts rolling, once the artist starts digging in his heels and makes his opinions known, it’s hard not to come away from the film monumentally impressed. Klayman’s portrait could have been more fully developed and definitely could have dug a bit deeper, but it comes close to being essential viewing almost in spite of itself. Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry isn’t perfect, but I’m not sure it needed to be. A man as complicated and as intriguing as this one is deserving of numerous snapshots, even if the full picture might not ever be developed.

THE PINTER FESTIVAL ACT THEATRE Through August 26 ACT Theatre has been nurturing a Harold Pinter aficionado, Frank Corrado, for a number of years. Frank is a passionate producer of Pinter’s works, and for a while he had an ongoing series called Pinter Fortnightly. Now, the Nobel Prize-winning playwright (1930–2008) gets a month-long festival at ACT, featuring four fully mounted plays featuring some of the best actors in town.

The first two, one-acts The Dumb Waiter and Celebration, are combined in one evening and opened recently. Two longer plays,

THE DUMB WAITER One of Pinter’s early one-acts, this absurd play has a number of similarities to the Beckett two-hander, Waiting for Godot. As in that play, two men are waiting for something and talking about the waiting. What Darragh Kennan (as Gus) and Charles Leggett (as Ben) are waiting for seems vaguely sinister. It’s work-related, and they’re waiting for instructions.

As they wait in this dank, moldy room (designed by Robert Dahlstrom so vividly we can almost smell the damp, metallic air), we slowly realize they are in a basement kitchen of a defunct restaurant. They are edgy and their conversation circles around

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer In an inspiring and hopeful evening last weekend, five homeless or at-risk youth became playwrights and saw their work performed by trained actors on a normal stage with lights and sound and a stage manager – the whole works. Part of an ongoing project called Orion Out Loud, developed by four Cornish College of the Arts grads working with clients of YouthCare’s Orion Center (a youth shelter near the Cornish campus), the Orion Out Loud Playwrights’ Festival was held at Richard Hugo House on July 28.

According to YouthCare’s website (www. youthcare.org), up to 40% of the youth who become homeless or at risk of homelessness identify as LGBTQ, and some are evicted from their homes just because of who they are.

About four years ago, Samie Detzer, Sarah E.R. Grosman, Tim Smith-Stewart, and Carol Thompson started inviting Orion Center youth to work in an intensive writing workshop, learn some playwriting techniques, and have their work read by Cornish students and local professional actors. The four have learned how to write grants for their project, which they have continued since their graduation.

The organizers wanted to find a way to demonstrate that theater could be a fundamental tool for social change. Year after year, they have certainly seen it happen.

And it whets the appetites of some participants for more. In a talkback after the festival, Smith-Stewart said some of the youth who had participated in Orion Out Loud came back to the organizers and said they

wanted to keep writing, and was there some more support available for creating theater?

They applied for, and received, a $5,000 City of Seattle grant, with a promise of another $7,000 for this year.

“There’s a magic in this project that people who are needed just tend to show up,” said Grosman. “Like the actors – talented actors and generous human beings. There wasn’t any point where we couldn’t cast a part.” Most of the acting participants are current or former Cornish students, although well-known actor Tim Gouran, who works for YouthCare, also played a role in several of the evening’s pieces.

Once the organizers got the grant, they went to the interested young writers and asked them to sign contracts to do the work.

Five homeless or at-risk youth committed to meeting twice a week – an individual tutorial and a group meeting – to develop material. The writers worked for five weeks. Then there was a two-week process of rehearsing with actors and directors. And the contract included rewrites, and required the youth to show up and participate. The organizers felt that it was important to pay the youth for their time. Grosman explained, “There is something really important for us about saying that this can be a job and your work is valuable enough for us to pay you for it.”

The writers got to experience both generating the work and hearing others interpret their words. According to Grosman, the organizers also learned some new lessons, such as how “things can be considered universal, even if we haven’t experienced exactly what they’ve gone through.”

The anniversary husband (Corrado) starts reminiscing about meeting another young woman back in the day, yet his wife (Briskman) gets only mildly miffed at this slap.

Their behavior gets worse the more they imbibe.

The wait staff (Peter Crook, Cheyenne Casebier, Benjamin Harris, and Darragh Kennan) have to keep plastering pleasant smiles on their faces, even when Allgood’s wife character drunkenly begs to kiss the manager (Crook) on the mouth and Briskman joins in her entreaty.

Kennan has another standout moment as a waiter who keeps interjecting. He almost knows he shouldn’t, but can’t help himself as he name-drops artistic glitterati that his grandfather apparently spent time with.

None of the patrons likely know any of the famous artists he mentions, nor do they care.

Frace gives a specially sparkling performance as a woman who scrambled up the social ladder, though her character has a couple of wince-inducing moments as well.

And Dahlstrom’s Dumb Waiter set has been turned around, literally, into a posh restaurant.

What the audience gets is not a pleasant kind of humor, but one that pokes fun at people who are easy to dislike. Pinter’s disdain for the wealthy and their allegiance to their own set is palpably clear. their desire to “get moving.” But as we learn more about their line of work, the circumstances grow even more absurd. Some matches are pushed under their door in an envelope, but no one is there when they open the door.

Gus is younger and subservient to the gruff and unresponsive Ben. Occasionally, Ben gets very violent and threatening with Gus. The sense of dread begins to move the evening from its initial feeling of comedy to a sense of foreboding.

A sudden grinding noise brings attention to a part of the wall no one had noticed, as a door opens and reveals a dumbwaiter holding an organ grinder’s monkey doll and a note requesting food. Stranger requests follow, and Gus and Ben grow more agitated.

Eventually Ben gets the notion that responding to the notes and the old-fashioned communication device are part of the next job.

Kennan and Leggett play off each other beautifully. John Langs directs them with relatively realistic pacing, even though there are many Pinter-esque half-sentences and pauses in conversation. However, the ending might leave you wondering what Pinter was trying to say here.

Loud, raw, and unapologetic, Rent changed the face of musical theater so much that it won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

And now it has returned to Seattle, landing at the 5th Avenue Theatre where it has been re-envisioned for the 21st century.

friends who are squatting in an abandoned warehouse on New York City’s Lower East Side. Homelessness, AIDS, and the faltering world economy are becoming frequent news items. Mark is a filmmaker living on the outskirts of his own life so that he can document the fast-changing world around him. Roger is a musician and former junkie searching for that elusive hit song. Mark and Roger’s circle of friends includes Collins, a free-floating philosophy professor living with HIV, who finds his new love, Angel, a drag queen who is also HIV-positive, playing the drums as a street performer; Maureen, Mark’s ex-girlfriend, who is currently involved with Joanne, an Ivy League-type lawyer; Mimi, a club dancer who lives above the boys and is HIV-positive and a heroin addict; and Benny, the boys’ former

Benson on September 20 (Snoqualmie Casino Ballroom), and pop duo Matt & Kim on October 30 (The Neptune).

Kaskade was named “America’s Best DJ for 2011” by DJ Times magazine, an honor not lost on those who follow electronic music because the talent pool is deep in the United States. The ex-Mormon and former record store owner recently sold out the Staples Center in Los Angeles, a huge feat for any entertainer. Kaskade (real name Ryan Raddon) is expected to interview with me in the days ahead, and if this happens you’ll see it in next week’s issue. He’ll play the WaMu on August 10.

roommate (and Mimi’s ex-boyfriend) who married wealthy and is living a comfortable life. This urban family shares its joys and troubles through life and death in the complicated world around them.

The voices are all strong and clear, and handle the lyrics and music well. There are some definite standout performances here and they are easily recognized. Angel, played wonderfully by Jerick Hoffer, is easily the scene-stealer. Drag comes naturally to Hoffer (who performs locally at Julia’s on Broadway), and this definitely adds to the believability and vulnerability of the character. Mimi (Naomi Morgan) is the rebellious drug-addicted dancer. Her voice easily handles the range of her songs, from the raging “Take Me Out Tonight” to the soft and touching ballad “Without You.” Her petite physical size emphasizes her character’s vulnerability, and she uses it to her best advantage. Maureen (Ryah Nixon) is another character the audience can’t help but watch.

With her fierce yet bubbly personality, she takes control of her every scene.

Unfortunately, the other characters just seem to “be there” on stage. All their voices are good, but Roger (Aaron Finley) seems to think that angst can only be expressed as anger, and he snarls and barks his lines in a consistently one-note fashion. Mark (Daniel Berryman), the filmmaker, plays the outside observer so well that the audience tends to not even notice him. Both are solid performances, but not enough to carry the musical as the two alleged leads.

Which brings us to this matter of “reenvisioning.” (Warning: Possible spoilers ahead.) Rent is 16 years old and is itself a re-envisioning of the 1896 Puccini opera La Boheme. This production isn’t so much a reenvisioning as it is a restaging. Most of the changes and new additions are minor, but some deserve mention. Having Angel move silently among her friends during the funeral scene (reprising “I’ll Cover You”) was very poignant, giving both sides the chance to say goodbye. It’s a beautiful scene on its own, and this addition made it even more heartfelt. While those familiar with it will miss Mimi’s fire-escape dance number, the replacement of her addiction scene does justice to the character’s nature. The entire cast also stays on stage, sitting on the sidelines (reminiscent of Spring Awakening)

when not in the scene, which was completely incidental.

Several new things didn’t work so well, however. During the ballads the ensemble cast did interpretive dances, which detracted from the beauty of the songs. In Angel’s hospital death scene, she appears in full drag when her boy persona (as is usual for this scene) would give off so much more vulnerability and would allow the audience to empathize more strongly. Also, for a group of friends on the Lower East Side, racial minorities are not well-represented – highly unusual (and ironic) both for this production and for the 5th Avenue. Plus, they all seem to have PER-FECT DICSHUN with EveRY Sen-TENCE – unlikely for a motley group of Lower Manhattanites.

Another problem, not specifically with this production but with the whole idea of restaging Rent, is that today’s 20-to-30-yearold actors did not live through the first years of the AIDS epidemic (at least not as adults) and thus face a challenge in conveying the fear, panic, and sheer horror the disease left in its wake before medical advances made it somewhat manageable. Anyone attempting to re-create this era onstage would be well-advised to do some in-depth research into the social and scientific landscape of the time.

Ultimately, the main issue with this performance is the fact that it is a performance. The audience never gets invested in the characters – we are too distracted by the “show.” The voices, the staging, and (of course) the music, lyrics, and story are all good, but unfortunately the cast too often doesn’t emote any real feeling and the play’s emotional impact is seriously diluted as a result.

Rent first opened Off-Broadway, moving to the Nederlander Theatre in April 1996. It ran for more than 5,120 performances and was nominated for 10 Drama Desk Awards, winning six (including Outstanding Musical), and 10 Tony Awards, winning five (including Best Musical). Rent also won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming only the eighth musical in history to do so.

The 2005 movie version included all but two of the original principal cast members reprising their roles. There is also a filmed 2008 Broadway performance available on video.

Overall, this year’s VMA nods are a mess of predictable big names and annoying teen sensations.

and directed with Andy and German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior). Interestingly, Lana’s hair in the Cloud Atlas video is quite similar to Lola’s in the Tykwer film.

In the video, the three directors lightheartedly discuss the creative process behind the new movie as well as the difficulty they had pitching it to moguls. According to the three, Cloud Atlas, which is officially tagged as a “science-fiction fantasy drama,” is a cross-genre – a somewhat complicated film that utilizes most of the cast in multiple roles.

The film also has multiple story lines. According to the official synopsis, Cloud Atlas is “an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present, and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.”

Rumors that Lana was transitioning date back to the early ’00s, when she and Andy were working on the Matrix trilogy. However, neither she nor her brother ever addressed the subject publicly until now.

Lana had been seen cross-dressing in public after divorcing her wife in 2002. According to Rotten Tomatoes, a film news and review website, she completed her transition after directing Speed Racer in 2008 with Andy.

Cloud Atlas, scheduled for release on October 26, stars Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, and features Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant. The screenplay, by the Wachowskis and Tykwer, is based on the novel of the same name by British author David Mitchell.

continued from cover We caught up recently with the So You Think You Can Dance contestant-turnedchoreographer, who dished on his roommates, his first big movie, and why Gay dancers shouldn’t “dance Gay.” Azzopardi: What’s it like living with these guys?

Wall: We’ve been living together for two years now and it’s been something else! [laughs] We’re brothers from another mother, and we go through life together and support each other. Two [of us] are Gay and two are straight on this show, so it’s cool to see how we live as one and how it doesn’t really matter.

Azzopardi: Who’s the most competitive?

Wall: We’re never really up for the same job, but it does get a little competitive in the house sometimes.

Azzopardi: The messiest?

Wall: In the beginning we were all pretty good about keeping it together, but everyone kind of gave up. Right now my room is such a mess because I’m always trying to clean up the kitchen and the living room. When I have time to clean, I have to clean up everybody else’s mess. Kyle’s the handyman. He’s the guy who, like, fixes the lights. [laughs] Azzopardi: Is All the Right Moves actually reality?

Wall: It’s our lives. [The network is] a fly on the wall. We’d have a dance company regardless of whether we have a TV show or not.

Azzopardi: What will surprise people about the dance world that you guys are living in during this show?

Wall: What we have to go through, starting this dance company from the ground up with no money – you see the whole process.

We have this huge goal but absolutely no way of getting it done. I saw the first episode – it’s so surreal. I was biting my nails.

It’s definitely suspenseful and emotional and also there’s beautiful dancing. You get everything in one little package. It’s really good TV. Azzopardi: How much of your relationship with [boyfriend] Dom Palange will be part of the show?

Wall: Not as much as I wanted, because he’s in Miami. It’s long-distance. He comes in halfway through the season, but I definitely talk about him as much as possible.

Azzopardi: Has having a dance company always been a dream of yours?

Wall: Yeah, I always wanted one. I’ve always wanted to have my own TV show, too! [laughs] Azzopardi: You really have done a lot for someone as young as you are. What new goals have you set for yourself?

Wall: By the time I’m 31 I want to move into directing and producing and choreographing my own movies, productions, events, and shows. There’s so much more room for me to grow in this industry, and I can’t wait to take those steps. And hopefully by 32, I’ll be ready for a child.

I set high goals. If someone had told me seven years ago, “You’re going to have your own TV show, your own dance company, choreographing all these movies and things,” I would’ve slapped them in the face and said, “Yeah, right.” But I did!

Azzopardi: With your new series, and ones like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With the Stars, dance reality shows are all the rage. Why does dance make for good reality television?

Wall: Good question. It’s emotional and [viewers] want to see what people go through – they want to see people work through their problems and aggressions.

And dancers are really nice to look at! [laughs] It makes people feel good because a lot of people don’t know how to dance the way we dance, so they admire it. With this [show], you see me 100% completely bare, and you see why I dance and why I choreograph, and you care about it more.

Azzopardi: “One-hundred percent com-

pletely bare?” This is on Oxygen, right?

Wall: [laughs] Yeah. You know what I mean!

Azzopardi: You got your start in the business when you were 9, with a Dr. Pepper commercial. What do you remember from that experience?

Wall: It was my first time in front of a camera, and I realized then that I wanted to be in this industry. I was more interested in what was going on behind the camera – the chorographer, the director – I loved that and I’ll never forget it. I moved to New York at 12 and did a Broadway show, and I’ve been working ever since.

I really owe a lot to So You Think for the exposure I got on that show, which led me to so many more opportunities. I don’t know where I’d be today in my career if I didn’t get my start [there].

Azzopardi: What inspires your choreography?

Wall: Usually personal life stories of my own. And I have really vivid dreams a lot of times, and I live my dreams full-out. I sometimes don’t know when they’re real or not. I dream every night, so there’s a lot of images I take from my dreams.

Azzopardi: What’s the last dream you had that inspired a routine?

Wall: For the top-10 girl piece (on a recent episode of So You Think You Can Dance), I had this dream where I was lifted out of my body and I couldn’t move. It was really weird. It wasn’t like I was dying or anything – it was just that I was paralyzed and couldn’t move my body and I was floating up toward this white light. It was pretty crazy.

Azzopardi: Are you glad you came out the way you did? Do you think that’s the best way to come out if you’re a public figure?

Wall: I don’t really know. This is what’s so crazy: I never thought I was “in.” I never had press to talk about it. I wasn’t ever hiding anything. I guess when I got verbal about on it Twitter, people were like, “Travis is out.” I’m like, “When was I ‘in’?” I did So You Think and disappeared from the public eye because I was working on choreography and I didn’t really ever think I was a big enough public figure to say anything. I didn’t think it was a big deal.

Azzopardi: Have you ever felt pressure to ever stay “in” professionally?

Wall: No. God, no!

Azzopardi: What did you think of Benji Schwimmer, your fellow contestant on the first season of So You Think You Can Dance, coming out recently?

Wall: When I heard, I texted him right away to say, “I’m so proud of you.” He’s coming out of a church – I never had to deal with any of that. To take that step to come out – and not only that, but speak about what his church says about it – I’m so proud of him, because it’s about time he did it, and I wanted him to do it for so long. I think if everyone came out of the closet these days, the world would be so much better.

Azzopardi: Did you know he was Gay when you were competing against each other?

Wall: Come on! You know when you know! [laughs] I knew on the show, and we briefly touched on it while we were on tour.

CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): You’re pushing ahead harder in your endeavors, but something’s holding you back. Distinguish between necessary structure and dead weight. Advice from your partner could make life easier. Don’t be too proud to listen!

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Don’t get ahead of yourself. You can master the great ideas, but you need to start from the basics. That might mean reviewing what you think you know and finding new approaches.

PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Recent problems can feel overwhelming, but answers and order will come soon. Intuition is a better friend than logic, although you do need both. Just keep asking yourself what’s the mature, responsible thing to do.

Celebrating 39 Years!

Azzopardi: Many public figures stay closeted because they don’t want their sexuality to define their profession. Is that an issue within the dance community?

Wall: I don’t think people think of me as “that Gay dancer.” It doesn’t define my work. For guys, it’s different if you’re Gay and can only dance Gay. As a male dancer, you have to be strong and masculine. I think it’s terrible when a guy is dancing with a girl and the guy is dancing girlier than the girl.

I absolutely hate that, and I won’t hire them.

You have to do your role as a male dancer.

What you do outside of those doors is your own business and your own thing, but don’t let that define who you are as a dancer.

Azzopardi: How did your part in Step Up Revolution come about?

Wall: [Producer] Adam Shankman hired me, but the best thing is that Jamal Sims, the supervising choreographer, brought me in as a choreographer. He actually made me choreographer on this movie, and I haven’t even been an associate choreographer on a movie. To get full credit on my first movie – I was so thankful. A lot of people in the industry wouldn’t have done what he did.

I loved working on that movie. I saw it last month and think it’s completely different than every other Step Up. Azzopardi: How is choreographing for film different from choreographing for TV? Wall: I love movies, because you get to show your point of view and get the shot that you want to get – and it’s a movie! But we only had two weeks for all the routines.

Here I thought, “Oh, it’s a movie, we’ll have [lots of] time to choreograph!” And … no. [laughs] Azzopardi: If you could choreograph for anybody, who would it be?

Wall: I would love to create a visual show to Jason Mraz’s music. I love Jason’s music so much. And if I ever got to work with Beyoncé, it’s a lifelong dream and I would probably freak out and shake my ass.

Azzopardi: Ass-shaking is probably part of the interview process.

Wall: Yeah, probably! [laughs]

continued from cover Though his schedule is packed, he found time to chat by phone last week. Here’s what Cheyenne Jackson shared with me on a quick break from his many day jobs.

Rodriguez: You just got married last year around this time. Any plans for your oneyear anniversary?

Jackson: We kind of had a belated honeymoon just recently. We went to Europe and went all over, to Paris, went hiking in Slovakia, went to Vienna. So we’ll probably do something low-key, just us and our new little dog.

Rodriguez: Gay marriage could become law in Washington State, so we may see a lot of couples rushing to the altar. Do you have any wedding advice for couples-to-be?

Jackson: My advice for Gay couples getting married is to make the day about you, because this is an important step for all of us in the Gay community. We’ve worked a long time for just the basic human rights.

What we did, and it was perfect for us, was that we did it quick and dirty by ourselves on the beach with our dog and had some friends as witnesses. I’m hopeful for Washington state. C’mon, let’s do it!

Rodriguez: There’s an EP coming out that will include both of your singles, “Drive” and “Before You,” correct?

Jackson: We haven’t decided if we’re going to do an EP, or if we’re going to just go for it and do the full album because everything’s moving rather quickly. I got signed to a publishing deal with Sony/ATV, which basically means they love my songwriting.

So I’m writing for myself, but we recently started writing for other artists. An album is definitely in the works and I would imagine it’s probably [out] by the end of this fall.

Rodriguez: Is there a plan to take these songs on the road?

Jackson: I’m trying to let this unfold organically and really let it happen as it’s supposed to. That’s why I haven’t done an album before – a solo album, that is – because I never did feel like it was the right time. Now, I feel like it is. I’m definitely going to start with some dates in New York.

I do a lot of concert work, but usually it’s other people’s material. As far as my own stuff – yeah, I’m sure I’ll do some road sets.

Rodriguez: Your character on Glee didn’t have any singing parts. Was [series co-creator] Ryan Murphy aware that you could sing?

Jackson: Oh yeah, he came and saw me in Xanadu. He was definitely aware that I could sing. Everyone always asks, “Why didn’t you sing on Glee?” I don’t know – you’d have to ask Ryan.

Rodriguez: Aside from music, you’re also an actor working in films, television, and theater. What are some of your upcoming projects?

Jackson: This past year I’ve done three films: one called Price Check, with Parker Posey; Mutual Friends, which is a great New York-centric ensemble film; and right now I’m working on Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace movie [Behind the Candelabra] with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, so that is very, very exciting.

Rodriguez: Do you miss anything about Seattle?

Jackson: I do. I miss the lushness and the greenness. I lived in several places in Seattle – I lived on Alki in West Seattle, I lived on Queen Anne Hill for a while, and then Monte and I ended up living on Capitol Hill.

There’s no place like Seattle, but I just don’t have the time to go back there. Our whole lives are on the other coast now.

Rodriguez: Do you have any favorite Seattle haunts – any places you frequented?

Jackson: I wish I had a great answer for that, but I can’t think of any. I can say that I met my husband at Manray. I don’t even know if that exists anymore.

Rodriguez: It doesn’t, actually. It went from a parking lot to a new condo building.

Jackson: A new condo building? How sad – no more Manray.

Rodriguez: The climate in Hollywood appears to be good for openly Gay actors.

Do you notice that now from when you first started?

Jackson: From the very beginning of my career I have been out, so for me I always want the focus to be on my work and my reputation and what I have to offer. But yeah, it’s wonderful that Neil Patrick Harris and Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons all came out. All that does is just make it less of an issue and that’s really the most important thing. The more people who are out, the more visibility we have in every facet. So, I think the climate has changed. Do we have a long way to go? Absolutely. But I think we’re moving in the right direction.

Rodriguez: I’m jealous that you get to stare at Matt Damon all day.

Jackson: He’s very attractive. The most attractive thing about him is his kindness.

I barely worked with him on 30 Rock. He did one episode, the live episode a year and a half ago. When I got to the set he ran up to me and was so kind and talked about his kids. He’s wonderful. Is he great to look at?

Absolutely, for sure.

Rodriguez: For someone here in Seattle who wants a shot in the entertainment business, more on the acting side, is this a city where they can start and get work, or do they really have to move to New York or Los Angeles?

Jackson: Seattle obviously has a huge, thriving theatrical community. At one point I think there were seven, eight, nine Equity houses. I don’t know what the tally is these days, but I got my Equity card working at the Village Theatre in Issaquah. I worked at the Civic Light Opera, Seattle Rep, and of course the 5th Avenue [Theatre]. There are people who make their whole living in the arts quite successfully by staying in Seattle. Do I think you can really go to the next level staying in Seattle? I think it would be difficult. There are several peers of mine – Megan Hilty, Noah Racey, Ben Schrader – they’ve all made the move to New York because if you really want to have a career in musical theater, Broadway is the pinnacle of that. I would suggest doing as much as you can in Seattle – do great work, and work with a lot of people, and then if you can get to New York do it and see what happens.

Rodriguez: What’s the last piece of music you downloaded?

Jackson: Pink’s “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” is the last thing I added. Great song.
