All the contestants gave so much of themselves and elevated this competition to a level that can only be described as a showcase of pure talent. But as with any contest, there can be only one winner. You make sure the next one, Rock of Ages, has Tom Cruise in butt-baring chaps. “I thought we would cover it up with mesh or underwear,” recalls director Adam Shankman, “and I was like, ‘You do know that when I’m shooting, we’re gonna see your ass? Roy Arauz is a unique member of Seattle’s theater community – both as founder of one of the many tiny companies we see popping up with regularity, and as a Gay man whose heritage combines deep roots in his familial Costa Rica with an expansive sense of justice. His creation of Arouet (the real last name of the philosopher Voltaire, and also meaning “arrow”) came from his desire to produce certain plays he didn’t see being done around town. One of his first efforts, last year, was the Gaythemed The Gene Pool. His stated goals are to produce more LGBTQ-focused theater, as well as continue the theme of political justice in other areas of oppression, particularly women’s rights. When Roy sat down for an
