The singer on her Gay following, Adele comparisons, and going from medicine to music
by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor
Local talent competitions – be they drag, singing, or just “show up and show us what you’ve got” – are always entertaining, with little effort required on the organizers’ part. Audiences love to watch the busboy by day sing his heart out at night or the starving art student nail the perfect dance routine. Seattle Pride Idol is no exception. Week after week, members of the local and surrounding community show up and give it their all to a grateful audience. But something special happened this season: 2012 Pride
The rebirth of the big voice continues, and its newest star is Emeli Sandé, a Scottish import who, naturally, is already adored by legions of Gays. Sandé’s debut CD, Our Version of Events, featuring the breakout hits “Heaven” and “Next to Me,” is a throwback to the days of the mere voice. No flash; definitely no meat dress. Touring with Coldplay over the summer, Sandé caught up with SGN to chat about connecting with her Gay fans, the inevitable comparisons to Adele (with whom she shares a name), and performing at a Gay club the night Whitney Houston

by Milton W. Hamlin SGN A&E Writer In this crazy, uncertain age, it’s nice to know that there is sometimes truth in advertising. Pacific Northwest Ballet notes in its appealing ad campaign that George Balanchine’s Coppélia is “The Happiest Ballet on Earth!” The highly regarded company summarizes the story thus: “A silly tale of a doll, her maker, and a pair of young sweethearts.” It could easily add: “The perfect ‘first’ ballet for the whole family.” Coppélia premiered in 1870 in France at the Paris Opera Ballet. In 1884, the famous St. Petersburg production at Russia’s Imperial Ballet used choreography by Marius Petipa, based on the Paris original. His famous work was revised in 1894 and adapted by many other companies over the years. Jonathan Porretta and Kaori Nakamura in Coppélia

The cast of the new Dallas (l to r) Jordana Brewster, Josh Henderson, Linda Gray, Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Brenda Strong, Jesse Metcalfe, and Julie Gonzalo
by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer It’s not your imagination. J.R. Ewing, his wife Sue Ellen, and his brother Bobby are indeed back, the Texas clan reigniting their oil-rich feud this Tuesday night on cable’s TNT network. That’s right, after a 21-year hiatus, Dallas is returning with a new generation of colorful char-
acters and with timely subplots galore, hoping to stir the same type of interest the classic original series did from 1978 to 1991. The new series doesn’t just bring Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, and Linda Gray back into the fold, but also throws former Desperate Housewives regulars Jesse Metcalfe, Josh Henderson, see dallas page 30
