by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer Did you know The Avengers has made more than a billion dollars worldwide in only 19 days of release? Pretty crazy, I know. Can any of the big-budget wonders scheduled for release during July and August do the same?

The chances of that happening rest somewhere between incredibly slim and virtually none, which is saying something when you consider that 2012’s most anticipated motion picture, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, the capper to his Batman trilogy, goes into wide release July 20. If any movie has the chance to produce similar box-office results it’s that one, although even with Imax surcharges I think it’s unlikely.

Village Theatre keeps it Gay with Producers Jay Koh

Broadway and twice on national tours, this scribe drove to Issaquah to see two favorite actors – Richard Gray as Max and Jessica Skerritt as Ulla – in what would be, it was hoped, an enjoyable local production of an amazingly complex Broadway legendary hit. It was amazing to see such a polished, full riot on stage.

Gray, as expected, was a terrific Max. Skerritt was beyond belief in the seemingly thankless role of the Swedish sex bomb – she found varying shades of the stereotypical dumb blonde that Mel Brooks might have missed. The revelation of the show, to this writer, was the touching and truly comical performance of Brian Earp as Leo Bloom. He anchors the mirth and mayhem in reality – a truly breathtaking Village mainstage debut. Nick DeSantis is a delight as Roger Debris, the cross-dressing director. Chris Ensweiler is perfect as Carmen Ghia, Debris’ fey assistant and lover. And David Anthony Lewis knocks it out of the park as Franz Liebkind, the “I was never a member of the Nazi party” playwright and

his collection of swastika-armbanded pigeons. The names are funny, the characters are funny, the show is even funnier.

Following Broadway tradition, VT uses a lot of cross-dressing to increase the size of the cast – not all the women in the “Little Old Lady Land” production number are actual women and not all of the Sing Sing prisoners are actual men. SGN readers will have fun trying to spot the very successful staging secrets.

Everyone at Village deserves the highest praise – costuming, choreography, lighting, sound, musical direction. When a crossdressing character asks, “Does this dress make me look like the Chrysler Building?” the design team has its work cut out for it.

The show tends to be overly long as written and the VT production does have its lumbering moments, most of which will likely disappear once the show has run a week or two. Highest recommendation. Lisa Viertel plays seductive cougar Kath, who has to hide her sexual desires to conform to the repressive English mores of the time. Viertel’s ability to expose both her inner and outer character’s needs is a high point of the production. Her instant abashedness when she’s caught out and her sly methods of bargaining for her pleasures are a hoot.

Kath’s main adversary is her brother Eddie (James Cowan), with whom she has to fight over Sloane in a subtle game of subverted love. by Milton W. Hamlin SGN A&E Writer THE PRODUCERS VILLAGE THEATRE THROUGH JULY 29 The Village Theatre ends its 30th season with an out-and-out hit, its riotous production of Broadway’s The Producers, the Mel Brooks musical that won more Tony Awards (12) than any other show in theater history.

Brooks’ original 1968 film, with legendary performances from Zero Mostel and a young Gene Wilder, was an all-out campfest, with the elaborate Busby Berkeleylike staging of “Springtime for Hitler” as its central image. The film was ahead of its time in its satire of Gay and Lesbian characters involved in the backstage production of the musical-within-the-movie – the campy director who dressed in Mae West-like ball gowns, his “common-law assistant,” etc.

When Brooks adapted the film into a Broadway musical in 2001, he pulled out all the Gay stops. As one first-act song notes, “Keep It Gay” is the first and foremost rule for a successful New York musical. It might be possible to combine more Gay characters, more Gay comments, and more Gay references into a seemingly “straight” musical, but that’s highly unlikely. The Village Theatre lovingly keeps the LGBT elements intact, if a bit reserved. The resulting show is an out-and-out laugh riot that works well for VT’s typically slightly older, slightly conservative audience, but with an added bonus for “musical theater fans” and other LGBT audience members. It’s well worth a visit to Issaquah, where it continues through July 1, or Everett, where it moves for a July 6–29 run.

Steve Tomkins, VT’s artistic director for the past 19 years, stages the show with a zippy, Broadway approach, carefully recreating much of the original direction of Susan Stroman, who choreographed and directed the original show, winning a ton of Tony and other awards in doing so. Stroman’s production set the show in stone and it’s hard to imagine a staging that doesn’t follow in that tradition. (Alas, her film version of The Producers was a total flop – it seemed simply to have put a Hollywood camera on stage while the original Broadway production zoomed around it.)

The plot revolves around a Broadway producer with a long, long list of flops. His newest show, Funny Boy! (a musical adaptation of Hamlet) is about to open and New York wonders if the once-successful Max Bialystock will do it again – that is, produce another failure that will close in one night. (“What he did to Shakespeare, Booth did to Lincoln,” reads one of the kinder opening night reviews.) When Max sadly sings about his early career (“The King of Broadway”), he proudly notes he once “was the biggest name on Broadway.” He then admits that with 13 letters, Max Bialystock did, indeed, have the biggest name on Broadway – until a producer with a longer name came on the scene. (Yes, dear reader, bad puns abound.)

Later, an accountant reviewing the books for the fast flop of Funny Boy! notes that Max raised $100,000 to stage it, but spent only $98,000. If – and it’s a big if – Max could deliberately engineer a sure-fire boxoffice disaster, he could actually make a lot of money. After all, no one ever checks the balance sheet on a one-night flop. Thus, the plot to stage the world’s most awful musical is born. The comic result is Springtime for Hitler, “a gay romp with Adolph and Eva in Berchtesgaden.” Max and the nerdy account, Leo Bloom (English majors will get the pun), find the worst play by the worst writer, and hire the worst director and the worst design team – who end up looking like a reunion of the Village People. “Keep It Gay” is their anthem.

Max raises his money from lonely old women who visit his “producer’s couch,” Brooks’ clever revision of the casting-couch cliché. One woman, a marvelous comic turn, is known as “Feel Me/Touch Me,” her favorite phrase. (Alas, the audience never meets “Yank Me/Spank Me,” and that is certainly our loss.) Little by little, check by check, “schtup by schtup,” Max raises $2,000,000. As in any farce, things don’t work out as planned and Max and Leo end up with an improbable hit on their hands – and lengthy jail terms. Toward the end, having learned nothing, we see them working on a new production, bankrolled by “the worst murderers, rapists, and bank robbers” in the state pen. There is no doubt that Prisoners of Love will be a smash.

Brolin makes MIB3 something of a surprise court esy sony pictur es

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer After the abysmal Men in Black II, I can’t think of anyone I know who was clamoring for yet another return of Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones). Considering the fact that no one involved with that 2002 flick – not the two stars, nor producer Steven Spielberg, nor director Barry Sonnenfeld – had exactly been breaking down doors to get a third film made, it’s probably safe to say they weren’t excited about the idea either.

Yet here we are, facing the crystal-clear truth that Men in Black 3 does, indeed, exist. Still based on the comic book by Lowell Cunningham, still directed by Sonnenfeld, still produced by Spielberg, and still starring two actors who could do just about anything they want, one has to imagine Columbia Pictures offered everyone involved a gigantic pile of cash to get this thing into theaters. Either that, or they’ve got some pretty amazing blackmail on all the main players.

Sarcastic kidding aside, perhaps the 10year break from this franchise has actually

done Sonnenfeld and company some good.

While certainly not an essential or memorable film, Men in Black 3 is actually something of a hoot. Etan Cohen’s (Tropic Thunder) script manages to fix most of the problems that plagued the last film and return to the devil-may-care yet bizarrely grounded lunacy of the 1997 original, making the finished product surprisingly enjoyable.

Granted, there were numerous other writers (including Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp and Tower Heist impresario Jeff Nathanson) who reportedly worked on this project at one time or another, and the narrative does sometimes bounce around willy-

nilly, especially early on, probably because of that. All the same, Cohen is the only writer given credit here, and as such he deserves the kudos for helping produce a finished product that feels self-contained and more or less in control of itself. It may not always make complete sense, but overall the story progression is on solid ground and, considering we’re dealing with Star Trek-level time-travel shenanigans here, that’s kind of saying something.

Another thing this movie has going for it: Josh Brolin. Pure and simple, casting him as the younger, 1969 pre-moon-launch version of Agent K was total genius. Brolin is Tommy Lee Jones, inhabiting him to such an extent that the effect is borderline eerie.

But this isn’t a caricature; this isn’t some sort of mirror-like impersonation performance piece. The actor delivers a fully formed portrayal that’s funny, energetic, exciting, and, most startling of all, emotionally moving.

He’s not going through the motions here, but investing so much of himself inside the character and the film that the full effect is frankly astonishing.

Can I say the same about Smith and Jones?

Well, not entirely, but they’re far more invested here than they were in the disastrous second feature. Granted, this time around they actually have something to do, instead of just recycling the gags from the first flick, only bigger and at a higher volume.

As for the plot, the less said the better. Not because I’m worried about spoiling anything – in all honesty there’s not a lot to spoil – but more because, much like the first film, the whack-a-do nature of the comedy makes talking about the intricacies of the story mechanics not particularly important. Point A begins where you expect it to, Point B happens like clockwork, and Point C is more or less a foregone conclusion, with no real surprises. What is a shock is just how much fun Men in Black 3 turned out to be, and even though it’s a highly unnecessary sequel, that doesn’t make the smile on my face after watching it any less real.

When in New Orleans it is hard not to feel the literary influence of the city. Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Stephen Ambrose, William Faulkner, and so many other greats were nurtured by this sultry city. This is why it’s the perfect location for the Saints and Sinners Literary Festival.

The annual weekend-long event just wrapped up its ninth year, and is already preparing to celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2013. Held each May in the city’s fabled French Quarter, Saints and Sinners is currently hosted by the Hotel Monteleone, one of only three literary landmark hotels in the United States (the others being the Plaza and Algonquin hotels in New York City). And while attendees don’t have to be LGBT, the festival’s focus is definitely on our community. A plethora of classes and social events brings together a vast network of writers, agents, editors, publishers, and almost everyone who’s anyone in the LGBT publishing world.

Friday night, May 18, was the official opening of Saints and Sinners. After a meet-and-greet, the 10 finalists of the third annual Fiction Short-Story Contest (this year’s guest judge was Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina) offered a public reading from their nominated writings. All of the top 10 stories are published in the festival’s official annual anthology.

Saturday’s focus was four master classes taught by established members of the LGBT publishing world. These included “Mixing It Up: Adding Literary Techniques to All Genres of Writing,” hosted by Jeff Mann (author of the Gay-themed Civil War novel Purgatory); “Managing Point of View in Genre Fiction,” hosted by Len Barot (author and president of Bold Strokes Books); “Memoir: Defining a Life,” hosted by Fay Jacobs (Fried & True: Tales from Rehoboth Beach); and “Character/Plot Development for General Fiction,” hosted by Jameson Currier (author and founder/publisher of Chelsea Station Editions).

The master classes allowed only a limited number of students to attend, to better concentrate on the subjects at hand. I attended the Character/Plot Development class, where participants were asked to submit a sample of their current work so that each student (and the mediator) could offer their critique. The class was a mix of men and women of different ages and experience levels, who all put aside personal egos and worked together as professional peers. The results were fantastic feedback and commentary.

Sunday’s concluding panel discussion was titled “Is the Sky Falling? Publishing, Plagiarism, and Piracy,” discussing the future of LGBT publishing. Radclyffe (author and Bold Strokes Books publisher), Greg Herren (author and Bold Strokes Books editor), the aforementioned Jameson Currier,

July 13 Beasts of the Southern Wild – This one is borderline indescribable, but considering the reactions coming out of Sundance and the fact that it’s gotten a plum showcase at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, I’m not kidding when I say it’s more or less at the top of my summertime must-see list.

What’s it about? Why ruin the surprise – the title pretty much says it all.

Elena – Russian import involving a broken marriage, class alienation, and a mysterious inheritance that showcases esteemed director Andrei Zvyagintsev (The Return) at very top of his game. Twisty and twisted, this is a small-scale gem not easily forgotten.

Ice Age: Continental Drift – The gang’s all here as Manny, Diego, Sid, and all the rest find themselves set adrift upon a wayward iceberg and forced to battle new dangers and unforeseen obstacles they previously never could have imagined. In other news, it’s becoming quite apparent this prehistoric well is running close to dry.

Take This Waltz – Actress-turned-director Sarah Polley’s (Away From Her) latest

continued from cover we’ve made outside the boundaries of working at a faraway studio with a major producer. It really did feel like the kind of record you make if you are a kid having a sleepover and the parents aren’t there. We ended up doing things that we didn’t expect.

Azzopardi: “Just Kids” sounds like nothing you’ve recorded before. Can you tell me about that song?

Carlile: I call that my 3 o’clock in the morning song, because after the session would end and everybody would leave, I would work on this crazy song that I had been tossing around in my head that no one got. I couldn’t get anybody to get it because it was too difficult for me to play.

Azzopardi: You always come back to songs about childhood. Why do you feel a connection to that time?

Carlile: I probably always will. I’m super in touch with my inner 8-year-old. I have “The Neverending Story” tattooed on my shoulders, and that’s just how I live my life – so I’ll probably always write from that vantage point. I hope I don’t ever lose that, because that’s my compass.

Azzopardi: Are your twin collaborators, Phil and Tim Hanseroth, big kids too?

Carlile: Oh yeah. We get together and catch frogs and things like that.

Azzopardi: Is that what you did at Bear Creek?

Carlile: Quite a bit. We went down to the creek a lot, and the frogs were insane. What you hear at the end of the record was just a really great microphone that we ran out the back window and down to the creek to record the frogs, which is difficult, believe it or not.

Azzopardi: Why is Bear Creek significant?

Carlile: That whole area is significant to me. It’s a rural Northwestern recording studio built from a 100-year-old barn – more similar to my living situation. It’s really near where the twins and I grew up; we all lived in the area, and we’d all get up every morning and carpool or just stay overnight there.

Azzopardi: Many of your childhood influences were country artists, and you’ve gradually moved into that genre. Have you considered doing a country record?

Carlile: Yeah, I’ve thought about it a lot.

Someday I’d love to do a country duets record. Country is just full of duets and has the best duets there are. I’d love to do an album of duets with current country artists I love, and then some of the older country artists hanging around Nashville who prob-

Azzopardi: Being a Lesbian, do you think the country genre would welcome you with open arms?

Carlile: I haven’t made any strategic moves or decisions to move toward a more country-defined flavor in my music or in my lifestyle. I love country music so much because of the way it sounds and because of its traditions, but also because it really does speak to the way I live when I am in my truck and I’m going to get hay for the horse and I’m chasing chickens around the yard.

My sexual orientation has very little to do with that, so I expect the country music industry to catch up to that sentiment – that even Lesbians have chickens and horses and problems finding work and all the things that they sing about, and they will catch up to that eventually. I am of the strong belief that where you stand out most is exactly where you’re needed.

Azzopardi: Last time we spoke you mentioned that you didn’t recognize [your] huge Gay following despite your being out. Has that changed?

Carlile: Yeah, the blinders have been removed from me a bit. I guess [Gay fans] kind of always were there; I just didn’t notice. I have total career mindedness and tunnel vision, and I get ultra focused. I’ve just been living on adrenaline and momentum for the last decade and singing and touring, singing and touring. I never notice what the venues are or who’s calling or where they’re from; I just have these discussions and they’re great, and then I move on. But now I do see things – like, I look at my schedule and I go, “Chris is calling me; OK, this is a Gay publication, this is exciting and I’m ready to dive into that conversation.”

Azzopardi: What changed?

Carlile: Well, I turned 30. (laughs) I just woke up one day, and it happened to be on my birthday coincidentally, and realized that I cultivated a real career mindedness and was being neglectful. I plan to get a little more involved with activism in the coming years. I’m getting pretty excited about broadening my horizons.

Azzopardi: Activism within the Gay community?

Carlile: If it calls for it, then certainly. I tend to be more moved by humanitarian issues, issues that are less politically motivated. The Gay community is one of the interesting situations where, politically, it does veer into humanitarian and human rights territory. It’s one of the last civil rights situations and, to me, that is a humanitarian effort. So it definitely falls into the category of what I want to focus my charity on.

Azzopardi: What was your experience growing up Gay in a small town?

Carlile: It wasn’t a difficult process for me. My parents were amazing about it, my siblings were great, they came around, and I had the support from my community. Again, the whole concept of where you stand out the most is where you’re most needed. I think I had a good reputation and I had a lot of love and friends and family in my small hometown, in my small school.

Just being and living openly in that area changed minds on its own.

I wouldn’t say I made a big momentous occasion of coming out. I just was out, and there was really no hiding it. I mean, the way that it changed minds wasn’t that I was standing outside the church with a protest sign; the guy at the grocery store would hear and go, “Oh, she’s Gay? But I really like her.” And his mind would be changed.

Azzopardi: You know, I’ve always had a crush on the twins.

Carlile: I believe you! One of them is married to my sister, though, so that disqualifies him. So there’s only one left for you; that’s Timmy. He’s not married, and no, he’s not Gay. (laughs) Azzopardi: Having known each other for so long, and being around them as much as you have, you must have seen them naked once or twice.

Carlile: More than once or twice. Once or twice a day. Look, all modesty goes out the door when you live on a tour bus – that thing is 45 feet long by 8 feet wide, and when you have 12 dudes on there at one time, there’s just no privacy left, there’s nothing sacred

anymore.

Azzopardi: What have you learned from each other?

Carlile: We’ve meshed and become a machine that moves in the same direction. And we’ve learned a lot from each other personally. It’s been a crazy year. Phil married my sister, and I was the maid of honor and Tim was the best man. Just a couple of weeks ago, Tiffany and Phil had a baby, so me and Tim were in the hospital, the auntie and the uncle – a pretty strange way for a band to be in the same room.

Azzopardi: What happens five minutes before you hit the stage?

Carlile: I say a prayer, if I’m really nervous. A lot of times Phil goes off the rails and into some manic pep talk; he’s like a football coach that’s just taken cocaine. He gets really into it, jumps up and down, and slaps high-fives. And he yells “Iron Maiden!” all the time, which is really weird. Tim just kind of plays his guitar and I might do a shot of whiskey. We love to play, so we don’t tend to ritualize it.

Azzopardi: Is the song “Josephine,” from the album The Story, about an ex-girlfriend?

Carlile: No, just the county in Oregon.

Now, though, Josephine is the name of my niece.

Azzopardi: For the longest time I thought it was about a lost love.

Carlile: No, no. But you’re very romantic.

Azzopardi: I’m not sure if you’re still with your girlfriend, but how has she, or any other girlfriends, influenced your songwriting?

Carlile: It’s funny. I rarely write songs about a person I’m in a relationship with at the time. It’s always someone I’ve been in a relationship with or someone I want to be in a relationship with. So no, I would say not.

And I’m not still with her, but she was such an influence on my life that I’m sure she’s in there a little bit and probably always will be.

In true Gay fashion, she is, of course, one of my biggest friends.

Azzopardi: Those Lesbians can’t let go.

Carlile: (laughs) We cannot! If you made me a T-shirt that said, “Those Lesbians Can’t Let Go,” I would proudly wear it.

continued from cover Diamond St. James Black told SGN that she feels great to have “achieved this honor” and is looking forward to “representing my community.”

Diamond says she got her inspiration from God, but also from her godfather, Isaac Payne, and godmother, Ebony La Face, “for pushing me to succeed.”

For Diamond, it is all about community.

“There were so many people that supported me on this amazing journey,” she said.

It was obvious to anyone at the pageant on Sunday that Diamond St. James Black came to win. She threw down in each category, standing out from all the rest. She told SGN it took many months of preparation to compete and ultimately win.

There was something else evident Sunday night, too. Diamond has a large fan base.

“Most of them have followed me from the start, when I performed at R Place.”

Diamond says she performs in drag because she considers it an art and has been entertaining audiences for eight years. “I enjoy it to the fullest,” she said.

Diamond St. James Black is more than a pretty face and a sick lip-sync – she throws her support behind marriage equality and finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. She told SGN she is “thankful for the fans” who support her and that she plans to bring the title of La Femme Magnifique International 2012 home with her in September.

For drag entertainer Beyonce Blaque, being crowned La Femme Magnifique Washington Plus 2012 is a “dream come true.”

“I waited a long time to accomplish this, and I feel like the sky is the limit from here,” she told SGN in a phone interview from Spokane.

Beyonce Blaque wants everyone to know that “big is most definitely beautiful.”

“I love the fact that La Femme added the Plus title,” she said. “I want to win so I can represent not only Washington State, but the plus-sized queens who might feel ashamed

or embarrassed about their size. I am here to tell them it is OK. We can do what the skinny queens do and believe in yourself.”

Aside from supporting marriage and full equality for the LGBT community, Beyonce Blaque says that due to two tragedies in her family from HIV/AIDS and cancer, she supports raising money to find a cure for those diseases.

Her biggest influence has been her mom, Paula Nieves. “She has always been there for me,” Beyonce Blaque told SGN. “She’s stood by my side and is my hero. She is everything to me.”

The preparation for and cost of pageants like La Femme Magnifique Washington and Washington Plus are large. As Beyonce Blaque jokingly said, “I can’t even count how many hours and how much money I put into this.”

But, in the end, she says, it will all pay off if she is crowned this year’s La Femme Magnifique International Plus 2012.

First runner-up for La Femme Magnifique Washington 2012, Fraya Love, told SGN, “I entered the contest on a whim, actually. The first La Femme I saw was last year when Lady Chablis won and I thought, ‘I can do that.’ So I entered.”

Fraya has entertained audiences at R Place’s Lashes Cabaret – hosted by Lady Chablis – for nearly a year. When Fraya heard she won first runner-up she said she was “honestly surprised mainly because all of the girls were so fantastic.”

“Having the support from R Place and Lady Chablis made me feel blessed,” said Fraya. “I have only lived in Seattle for a year, and to have that much support from that many people is amazing. There is really no words for it but ‘blessed’ is the closest I could think of.”

Echoing to other contestants, Fraya says “tons of work goes into this.”

“You have three looks to accomplish: Evening, Theme Wear (this year’s theme happened to be Hats, Hats, Hats), and Las Vegas Showgirl,” she said. “Plus, your talent and hair and accessories for your looks. Oh, and … SMILE!” Fraya Love says she fully supports the right of same-sex couples to get married.

Being from Southern California, she saw the negative effects that ballot measures like Prop 8 can have on a community.

“I just want to thank everyone for all of their support,” she said.

I caught up with Blilie during a break in New York promoting A Joyful Noise, which arrived at North American record stores this week. The album’s first single is “Perfect World.” Feisty and engaging, Blilie chatted with me inside the Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: It’s cool to hear your song (“Heavy Cross”) on a TV commercial, with Charlize Theron.

Hannah Blilie: I actually thought it was only going to be in a French commercial – I didn’t realize it was going to be airing in the States. I was watching the Grammys, or the Oscars, or something a lot of people watch, and it came on. My mom called and was like, “That’s your song!” It was really funny. And Charlize Theron’s a babe.

Rodriguez: Do you have any Seattle haunts or watering holes you’re fond of?

Blilie: I used to hang out at the Crescent a lot. My friend Marcus owns that bar Pony, so I like to go there. I moved to Portland in like 2004 or 5. The last time I was up to Seattle around Capitol Hill, I was like, “Wow, I don’t recognize anything.” It’s funny how much a place can change in five years or whatever. I remember going to Foxxes, and Jackie Hell and Ursula Android were on the scene. It was a really fun time to be in your early twenties, going to see some freaky-ass drag shows and knocking a urinal off the wall in the bathroom. (laughs) Rodriguez: This has been a tough year, actually a tough week, for music, losing Donna Summer and Robin Gibb. Do you have a reaction to either of these? Did you spin any Donna Summer records back in the day?

Blilie: I was huge into Donna Summer. I was really shocked to hear that she died. She was only 63, or something. God, so many disco classics she was responsible for. She worked with Giorgio Moroder, that legendary producer, and he pioneered the amazing Euro-electro disco sound together with her on that song “I Feel Love.” It’s crazy, there’s all these amazing musicians that have died this year. Whitney Houston’s death really struck me. Obviously, Amy Winehouse last summer, that was super-sad. Etta James, [I’m a] huge fan of Etta James. There’s all these amazing women/diva/legends who have all passed away this year.

Rodriguez: I’m sure you guys have played “Standing in the Way of Control” dozens and dozens of times. Do you still play it close to the original, or do you change it up for each tour?

Blilie: We still play it pretty much the same way. We’ve added a new member now, so there’s actually five of us. We’ve had a touring bass player for three or four years, and we just added a keyboard player in the last few months for this new record. So, I guess it’s changed in the way that there’s just more people involved. A lot of times, Beth does live mash-ups. She’ll start singing Nirvana over “Standing in the Way of Control,” or she’ll throw in some random pop song.

I guess anything can happen live, but we haven’t changed it much. I never get bored with that song either. It’s a song I feel has a real magical connection with the crowd.

Rodriguez: Is there anyone in pop music you follow religiously, whose music you always buy or are mildly obsessed with?

Blilie: In mainstream pop, ooh. Ugh. It’s pretty sad right now. I follow Lil Wayne and Usher. Or, anything Missy [Elliott] does.

She hasn’t been very active for a while, but she just had a song with J. Cole that’s really good. The stuff I’ve been obsessed with lately this past year has been underground electro and house music, stuff like Azari & III, really good ’90s acid house. Grimes, I don’t know if you’ve heard of Grimes. Just a lot of electronic music.

Rodriguez: The music industry is pretty open-minded and I know you guys have toured with lots of bands and met a lot of different people. Are there any fellow artists who’ve surprisingly been Gay-friendly or very, very open?

Blilie: You know what, we toured with Busta Rhymes (we both laugh) in Australia a couple of years ago and I’d always heard that he’s really homophobic, probably more towards Gay men than towards Lesbians.

But I have to say he was the sweetest guy to us and I know he knows we’re a Gay band.

He was this big, cuddly teddy bear and really sweet. The ladies from Salt-N-Pepa were really sweet to us, too. It was like this weird hip-hop/R&B tour we were on for some reason (laughs). I think attitudes are changing a lot. It’s getting less and less cool to be homophobic, even in the mainstream. Even things you could get away with saying five years ago, people just aren’t standing for it anymore.

Rodriguez: As recent as last week, President Obama and Jay-Z have come out in support of Gay marriage. This kind of endorsement got attention from around the world, especially when you have a president saying he’s okay with same-sex marriage.

Blilie: Yeah, and regardless of whether that’s going to be enacted into actual policy or not, just the saying of it is really symbolic as kind of a tide-turning statement. It seems like there’s been a lot of progress in the last couple of years with the fight for marriage equality. Attitudes are sort of opening up and changing. There’s certainly a lot of backlash and hatred, too. But it seems like people in music, Hollywood, and the president are trying to turn that tide into a civil rights issue and an equality and humanity issue more than a sexuality issue.

Rodriguez: Do you have an idea of when you’ll announce a big U.S. tour?

Blilie: I really don’t. I wish I had more information there, but I know it’ll be in the next few months. We’re doing some European festivals over the summer and I know we’ll be doing some major U.S. cities in the fall. I’m really excited, all of us are superproud of the record. It’s been really fun to play the new songs live.

the straight guy, does he get hit on when you’re on the road?

Blilie: (laughs) He’s actually the sluttiest member of our band. He gets hit on by everybody. It’s funny, people ask him, “What’s it like to be in a band with these crazy Lesbians?” And he’s like, “It’s just my normal life.” You know, like it’s not weird for him. All his friends are Gay, it’s just normal.

Rodriguez: It’s also been a crazy year with teen suicides and bullying. This new generation of Gay youth is going through a lot of shit. Do you have any advice for these young Gay folks on how to deal with this

sometimes tough world and how to pull through it?

Blilie: I think the “It Gets Better” campaign was really amazing. Go Dan Savage from Seattle! But just to know this doesn’t have to be it, like high school is not the end of the world. Find another freak, whether in your school or online. There’s just so many people out there feeling the same way as you, isolated and alone and hated on. There’s just this huge community of people who feel the same way. Try to seek out a Gay and Lesbian group at school, or something online. Just to know that you’re not alone is the most important thing.

Loudon Wainwright powerful and pleasing

Swin Cash, Le’coe Willingham, and Ashley Robinson have left the team. Tina Thompson, Ann Wauters, Shekinna Stricklen, Ewelina Kobryn, Alysha Clark, and Victoria Dunlap have joined. Lauren Jackson is playing for Australia’s Olympic basketball team and will be out half the season.

Seattle dominated the first quarter 24-10.

They maintained their lead so we went into halftime 35-24. The same was true of the third quarter, when Seattle led 56-42. In the last three minutes, they tied 62-62. Seattle took a one-point lead with a free throw, but L.A. then made a two-pointer and a threepointer, giving them 67. Another Storm free throw took Seattle to 66. The Sparks made another two-pointer and two sets of free throws to win the game, 72-66. Mercy was very disappointed, since Seattle had been so strong throughout the game. The Sparks’ Kristi Toliver was player of the game with 25 points.

Cuteness said, “I missed Lauren Jackson. The team has a lot of new players. It is

a whole new team, except Sue Bird, Katie Smith, and Tanisha Wright. Tina Thompson played well. She made a lot of three-pointers and is a seasoned player. She made 12 points. Ann Wauters made some mistakes – threw the ball away a few times and missed a free throw. Got some rebounds. She made some free throws and earned 17 points.”

Loudon Wainwright III Reality joined Mercy for Loudon Wainwright III at the Triple Door on May 20, because Cuteness was at a lacrosse potluck.

The house was full of enthusiastic fans who called out their requests. Reality was impressed that the waiter asked about food allergies. Mercy liked it that the valet unloaded her walker without having to be asked.

The opening act was Shelby Earl, a local singer-songwriter. Mercy thought Earl had a nice voice and guitar work. Reality thought she had a good strong voice. She has a new CD, Burn the Boats, coming out. High points were the title track, “Beloved,” and “Sea of Glass.”

Mercy thought Wainwright had a powerful voice and pleasing originals. Reality liked the singer’s sense of humor, thought he found it a bit morbid. Wainwright also has a new CD coming out, Older Than My Old Man Now.

Rocker stuns fans with Transgender announcement

In 2008, Tom Gabel interviewed with SGN. Gabel is lead singer of the hard-rock band Against Me! – one of the edgiest musical acts ever featured in this newspaper.

Gabel was extraordinarily sweet over the phone and answered questions about Gay weddings and Gay fans with no discomfort.

He was a striking man, tall with short blond hair and boyish face, plus a colorful display of tattoos on a very fit body. To say Tom Gabel was sexy is a big understatement.

Two years ago, in fact, I bumped into him downstairs at Neumos after he’d just taken a shower, and I froze with excitement. If you’ve never smelled a rock star fresh out of the shower – and I’ve been fortunate to be at the right place-right time twice – let me tell you that it’s potent. But he was really kind and offered to put me on the group’s guest list that night for a sold-out show (one that not even his record label could squeeze me into). Gabel also provided me with early buzz on Against Me!’s then-forthcoming album, White Crosses.

That night’s blistering performance at Neumos was the last time I saw Tom Gabel.

A couple of weeks ago Gabel shocked fans and the music industry with an unexpected announcement – he is Transgendered. (I’ll now refer to Tom appropriately as she.)

Suffering many years from gender dysphoria, a disorder in which a person is unhappy with their biological sex and desires to be the opposite sex, the decision was made to go public. Gabel, who will soon transition to Laura Jane Grace, broke the news to Against Me! followers on May 8,

though she had already shared the information with Rolling Stone magazine about a month before. At that time, only a tight circle of family and friends knew about it.

As reported by Rolling Stone contributing editor Josh Eells, not even the band’s drummer was aware of Gabel’s circumstances until late March.

Gabel and her wife Heather will remain married, and will continue to raise their two-year-old daughter together. How’s that for a modern family?

Following the announcement, support from GLAAD and fellow artists soon began streaming in. Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, who outspokenly voiced his opposition to Proposition 8 several years ago, tweeted, “I don’t think I’ve ever done anything that demonstrated the bravery of Tom Gabel.”

New Jersey-based punk act The Gaslight Anthem wrote an entire page of support for Tom on Tumblr, basically telling unsettled fans to just deal with it. The note ended with, “So go live, Tom.” And it wasn’t long before some of Against Me!’s faithful started posting words of encouragement on random Internet sites.

Gabel says she has not yet decided whether to undergo gender reassignment surgery, but for the time being she has begun a nearcomplete male-to-female transition. And though I’ll miss seeing tall, gorgeous Tom Gabel onstage when Against Me! comes back to Seattle, I certainly look forward to the debut of Laura Jane Grant.

Against Me! rose to fame with the politiTom Gabel cally themed hit “White People for Peace,” featured on the critically acclaimed album New Wave. The band has performed in Se- Capitol Hill Block Party.
