Must-see event holds final performances this weekend
Derek Cianfrance knew he was tackling something ambitious when he initially started fleshing out his narrative ideas for The Place Beyond the Pines. He wanted to compose a drama about fathers and sons, something that spanned generations, and as such he knew assembling all the pieces into a cohesive whole wasn’t going to be easy. “I started working on this before I made Blue Valentine,” says the filmmaker with a smile. “For at least 20 years I’d been aspiring to make a triptych, especially after seeing Napoleon in film school and after watching that climax with the three different screens I knew I wanted to make something [similar]. I had this formalist idea but I didn’t have the story to go with it, and then my wife was suddenly pregnant with our second Derek Cianfrance
