Azzopardi: Which song of yours has the most significance to you? Carlisle: Oh, gosh. The first one that comes to mind is “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” only because it was so huge and it really established my career – not just in this country, but all over the world.

In the ’80s, Belinda Carlisle’s career demonstrated that, for some, heaven really is a place on earth. As the lead singer of the supremely successful girl group The Go-Go’s – they had the beat, the looks, and the talent – the now-54year-old eventually embarked on a solo venture. Four albums and numerous hit singles later, Carlisle’s newly released anthology, Icon (one of an ongoing series by that name on the Geffen label featuring various classic pop artists), is a celebration of the singer’s best that also includes her first U.S.

FLASHDANCE: THE MUSICAL PARAMOUNT THEATRE April 16 – 21 Flashdance is a movie from 1983 about a pretty woman named Alex, who is a steelworker by day and an exotic dancer by night. Although it opened to mixed reviews, the movie became a cult classic. Holding true to the current trend of theater, producers have taken the film and reworked it for the stage. see flashdance page 24

The Sisters are doing it for themselves, for real. After eight long years of recording albums and touring the globe, pop-dance group Scissor Sisters is on hiatus and exploring individual projects. Lead guitarist Del Marquis, whose real name is Derek Gruen, is the first to branch off and release his debut solo album, Cosmos, under the moniker Slow Knights. The musical style itself – R&B, slower tempo, funky – is a departure from anything he’s done before, and the fact that Gruen is opting to stay under the see music lounge page 28
