Silversun Pickups’ Brian Aubert The Grammys, Gay posses, and (almost) getting hitched

If I judged Brian Aubert as a musician solely invested in becoming the next big thing and not giving a rat’s ass about social issues hovering around the Gay community, then I was wrong. The frontman for Southern California’s very hot Silversun Pickups – recent Grammy nominees for Best New Artist – was just as enthusiastic to talk about same-sex marriage as he was about his own wedding day just around the corner. Musically, Aubert is gifted – a singer with a voice that couldn’t possibly belong to anyone else. On a personal level, he’s a simple guy who escapes into great movies instead of researching how many units his band’s latest album (Swoon) has sold, and in regards

Freewheeling, fun-filled Dragon soars

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer How to Train Your Dragon Opening March 26 Loosely based on the acclaimed children’s book by Cressida Cowell, DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon is the studio’s best and most entertaining animated effort since Kung Fu Panda. The first film from the freewheeling minds of directors Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders since 2002’s Disney hand-drawn hit Lilo & Stitch, this is giddily satisfying family entertainment fit for all ages, and I can’t wait to see it again.

A scrawny Viking boy named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) isn’t sure what he’s supposed to be, as his gigantic father Stoick (voiced by Gerard Butler) is not only his village’s leader, but also the greatest dragon slayer alive, which makes the boy’s status as village annoyance not one he’s proud of. After a particularly horrendous attack leaves their mountain home in ruins, Stoick heads out with the fleet to find the dragons’ central lair in hopes of ending their menace forever, leaving his son to train to be a slayer

himself (and hoping he doesn’t accidentally chop off a limb while doing so).

But Hiccup has a secret. Using one of his own personal inventions, he brought down what was thought to be a particularly nasty dragon that everyone fears but no one has ever seen. But instead of killing the injured creature, the diminutive Viking befriends the animal, slowly nursing him back to health.

Through this friendship, Hiccup learns things about dragons giving him an advantage in training that perplexes his teacher Gobber (voiced by Craig Ferguson) and annoys fellow students like Astrid (voiced by America Ferrera) and Snotlout (Jonah Hill).

Things seem perfect. Hiccup becomes the village sensation, and Stoick returns to a hero’s welcome even though his expedition ended in disastrous failure, all thanks to his son’s present success in school. But when the boy’s secret is discovered all is in jeopardy, and unless he can convince his father to

see that dragons aren’t the threat he believes them to be, an even greater terror will rip the Vikings to pieces.

While the climax is suitably action-heavy and entertaining, it is during the first twothirds of its running time that How to Train Your Dragon truly burns up the screen. Hiccup’s evolution from timidly unsure neophyte to confident dragon tamer (and potential village savior) is one heck of a lot fun.

Scenes of him and his new winged friend learning to tear through the sky are positively euphoric. Their interactions are dynamite, and the film has a touching poignancy as well as an absurdist surrealist tone that’s a consistent delight.

I love the fact that DeBlois, Sanders and Will Davies’ (Flushed Away) screenplay relies upon character, not upon caricature, and unlike so many other DreamWorks animated enterprises, there is nary a pop culture reference to be found. At its heart, the threesome have constructed a father-son story that deeply resonates, and as great as all the boy and his dragon stuff, it is the relationship between Hiccup and Stoick that ultimately makes the movie soar.

Speaking of soaring, the directors brought Oscar-nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins (There Will

Be Blood) on board as a creative consultant to make sure their film had a look and a feel unlike just about any other CG (and 3-D) animated work. To say they’ve succeeded would be a massive understatement. There are moments here – especially when Hiccup takes Astrid on an impromptu flight through the clouds – that I almost forgot I was watching an animated movie. This is as beautifully shot a motion picture as I’m likely to see this year, and if a CGI-dominated epic like Avatar can actually win an Academy Award for cinematography, then why can’t this film at least be part of the conversation in 2010?

I will say that, like a lot of DreamWorks product, some of the constant quirkiness can get a little annoying, and the secondary characters (voiced by Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig) don’t add much to the proceedings, but those are relatively minor problems. I love the fact that the filmmakers have crafted something so grounded in solid character development, and have let the spectacle which surrounds Hiccup and Stoick speak with a naturalistic ebullience that is difficult to dislike. How to Train Your Dragon is a fun-filled frolic through the skies as seen through the eyes of a kid, and its ultimate destinations are ones many viewers will thrill to again, and again, and again.

Sweetgrass not your average documentary

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Sweetgrass Opening March 26 Sweetgrass is a documentary about herding sheep in the Bear Tooth Mountains in south-central Montana. I promise not to make any references to sex with sheep, Gay cowboys, or Jesus. That would be obvious and tedious.

I’ll never forget my first time over Bear Tooth Pass in the summer of 1989. The landscape overwhelmed with its beauty. It is a place that imbues you with a sense of tranquility one second and utter fear the next.

You know you’re an interloper there, and yet you never want to leave.

My friend Molly Stepanski worked as sheepherder in the Little Belt Mountains of Montana, just north of the Bear Tooth range.

She spent three months with 1,500 sheep, two dogs, and a horse named Trixie. There was another herder grazing sheep about five miles away and the rancher stopped by every two to three weeks to bring supplies and hay. Other than that, Molly was alone.

After seeing Sweetgrass, I gave Molly a call. She told me there’s nothing like the solace of open spaces. She said you learn things about yourself and about the world that just can’t be learned down here. Spending all that time alone can play with your head, too. “I learned how absolutely hilarious we are when we are alone,” Molly said.

Sweetgrass, filmed in 2003, documents the last year herders accompanied sheep into the Bear Tooth Mountains for summer grazing. Two men – one older and slightly beat-up and one younger and slightly whiny – herd the flock through the rugged landscape. Along the way, they must deal with uncooperative sheep, bears, wolves, and

cell phones. They also have to deal with solitude.

Sweetgrass is a beautiful documentary with a fascinating story. However, it’s the choices made by the filmmakers that elevate the film into the realm of high art.

The cinematography by Lucien CastaingTaylor is patient and clever. The dynamic composition is stunning as it reveals new and surprising perspectives. Long shots slowly zoom in to find a river of sheep spilling down an impossible mountainside. A close shot of the herd pulls out until the animals and humans are lost within the all-consuming landscape. The camera, the actual apparatus, becomes the storyteller.

The sound is unique. There is no music, no intrusive narrator. In fact, the sound seems to spring entirely from within the frame.

However, the sly filmmakers, Casting-Taylor and co-director Ilisa Barbash, have actually chosen to create sound that only seems to spring from within the frame. It’s pure cinematic sleight-of-hand and it’s used to awesome effect.

The story begins on the flatland where the sheep winter. From the beginning, the storytelling is understated, and the film technique is unobtrusive. There is humor, drama, and/ or emotion infused in every frame, but you don’t realize how the filmmakers have done it until after you leave the theater.

The style verges on formalist, but don’t let that scare you off. I only mean to say that the story is told cinematically instead of through a conventional device such as a voiceover narration and continuity editing.

The camera, the editing, the composition, and the sound design are expertly crafted to allow small and large elements of this tale to unfold. (It’s like Sergei Eisenstein made a documentary about sheep.) This is isn’t your average documentary.

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Youth Poetry Grand Slam Finals March 19 Moore Theatre When I was 17 years old, I was running around with chapped lips and my hair combed funny – I certainly wasn’t thinking about abortion rights and the sublime nature of candy bars. This week, I was fortunate to attend Youth Speaks Seattle’s 2010 Youth Poetry Grand Slam Finals at the Moore Theatre on March 19. I’m happy to report these kids are thinking about these things and much, much more.

Youth Speaks Seattle, founded in 2002, was modeled after the Youth Speaks group in the San Francisco Bay area. It was originally housed in and sponsored by the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center.

The organization became fiscally sponsored by Shunpike – a nonprofit that helps all kinds of small and mid-sized arts groups better manage the business aspects of art – in 2007, and left the Langston Hughes Performing Arts center in 2008.

Today, Youth Speaks Seattle mentors are teaching in South Lake, Rainier Beach, and Tyee High Schools, with additional mentors as writers-in-residence at Garfield, Ingraham, Chief Sealth, and Foster High Schools through Seattle Arts and Lectures’ Writers in the Schools Program. The organization runs open-mic nights, writers’ circles, and workshops throughout the year and is the driving force behind the Youth Poetry Slam Series.

The Poetry Slam Series consists of four slams conducted throughout the year. The top three poets from each slam move on to the Grand Slam Finals. The Grand Slam

Youth Poetry Grand Slam finalists headed for Los Angeles Finals then select the Seattle Youth Poetry Slam Team, consisting of four to six youths who go on to attend the international Brave New Voices Youth Poetry Festival and Slam (this year’s festival will be held July 19-25 in Los Angeles, CA).

The Poetry Slam Series’ four regular slams consisted of three preliminary rounds and a final round. Five judges scored the poets and cut the field from 12 to eight, and then from eight to five, in the three preliminary rounds.

The fourth round was a clean slate (scores from previous rounds have no impact), and the top three poets won a spot in the Grand Slam Finals. Last week’s Grand Slam Finals worked the same way, starting with the top three poets from each of the four slams, but were limited to three rounds and winnowed the field of 12 down to four to six poets.

For the uninitiated, a poetry slam is like an Ultimate Fighting Championship style cage match with 12 fighters in the ring at once, except there’s no real blood and these kids fight with words.

The Grand Slam Finals were great fun.

The evening was hosted by local literati Karen Finneyfrock. Finneyfrock is a novelist, poet, and teaching artist. She is the author of two books of poetry and writer-inresidence at Richard Hugo House.

Asked what she gets from her association with Youth Speaks Seattle, Finneyfrock said, “I can’t say enough about how much young writers inspire me. All of my best poems from the past few years have come out of writing circles I did with youth. Their energy, intelligence, compassion, and level of engagement with life is astounding. I feel really cool that they let me write with them.”

Finneyfrock kicked off the evening by teaching the audience the proper poetry slam etiquette. This includes how to show

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Winky Satori Group Through April 5 Winky, the new ensemble-created production of the Satori Group, is an adaptation of a short story by George Saunders. Neil lives with Winky, his socially awkward, religious sister. He is dissatisfied with his life and longs to marry and have a family and not be burdened by his sister. He goes to a selfimprovement seminar and tries to “win” by

getting Winky to move out.

The experimental production asks the audience several times to move from one seating area to another, in their new space in Pioneer Square. Their stage is dismantled and reformed several times, allowing for real atmospheric changes. Like their other two Seattle productions, video and technical enhancements are featured in their production. They incorporate whimsical moments and puppetry, as well.

support for a struggling poet (rub your hands together), how to show approval (snap your fingers in the direction of the poet), and how to show absolute astonishment at a line or phrase (you yell out, “Whaaaaaat?” in a long, slow drawl).

I’m glad I wasn’t a judge that night, because all 12 poets are truly gifted young people. However, I did have a couple of favorites. Ema Mclean-Riggs tore up the night with a caustic missive to Scott Roeder, the convicted murderer of Dr. George Tiller.

Ema’s poem was an intelligent and passionate rebuke delivered with the perfect tinge of anger that kept it powerfully on edge without slipping into a disjointed rant.

Her hands would gesture toward her own body as if laying claim to it over and over, and challenging anyone who dares to question that sovereignty.

Dujie Tahat, a self-described FilipinoJordanian-American, turned out a lighter

piece about his love of candy bars that was playful and witty. Tahat has serious command of the stage. His oration is purposeful and controlled, and the resulting emotion is palpable. When he is on the stage, you can’t look away.

Tahat also spoke a sweet and passionate love song to the four women in his life: his mother, his sister, his wife, and his daughter.

The song was personal and vividly evocative of the real women while also reaching into the heart of every person in the room and moving the poem from the personal to the universal without a bit of sentimentality.

The five poets going to Los Angeles for the Brave New Voices Poetry Festival are Katie McCorkell, Claire Aristotle J-f, Shanay Salas, Ema Mclean-Riggs, and Dujie Tahat. I hesitate to call them winners, because all the poets who took the stage own small victories from the evening. Besides, the real winners were sitting in the audience.

stairway both plays tones and moves to music. It’s all wrapped up in her belief in direct communication with Jesus and her “job” as youth counselor at church.

The play begins with the audience included in the self-help seminar where Tom Rodgers (Adam Standley) introduces us to his “People of Power” steps to help us “win.”

He explains that our souls are like bowls of oatmeal, but that each of us has at least one person in each of our lives that we allow to defecate into our oatmeal, which fills our lives up with poop. It’s a grotesquely funny and fairly apt analogy.

Neil (Anthony Darnell) is convinced that this method is helpful to him and that he must “win” by removing Winky from his home so she can be free of his poop, while he is free of hers. However, that’s a lot easier thought than done.

Overall, while inventive and expressive, the production rhythm lags and the audience lacks enough information about the protagonist to understand how he got so passive and incapable of making his own decisions. He seems to have been born that way, as his sister is born to be religious and wackily bossy.

Ultimately, it’s a lot easier to see why Winky should be taken care of than why her brother should release her from his life. If Neil is successful in ridding himself of Winky, the audience is on her side trying to figure out how she can even marginally make her way

in life alone.

In fact, the “power” seminar and the Winky dilemma seem to come from two different plays. The “power” seminar, if fully developed, might shed some light on the shysters who prey on people’s insecurities and desires to wave a wand and change their lives. Winky is so dedicated to her brother and so eager to please that she doesn’t seem the appropriate icon to push out of one’s life, even if she gets in the way.

Frothy Gypsy King hits the funny bone

The gypsy fa- critic@gmail. ther, John Patrick Lowrie, and the princess’ com. caretaker, Joanne Klein, get to skewer and celebrate marriage and each other as they gamely try to keep everyone alive. A showstopping turn by Jose J. Gonzales as the hapless Prince Dijon, who arrives to have his arranged marriage to the princess stopped, includes the funniest song of the night, “Prince Dijon.” (Another costuming gem: the tiny crown.)

Dastardly duo Gielgud and Godfried (the somewhat awkwardly used Mark Carr and Nick DeSantis) are the plot bumblers who get to sing about “The Plot” and a celebratory “Ain’t We Got Class,” as the plot looks to succeed. Marx Brothers act-alike sea captain Allen Galli gets his moment on stage as he tells everyone “The Prince is Dead,” another of the funnier songs.

Expect some jokes to go flat, but bounce back quickly. Also, Rogel attempts to make it less family-friendly by sticking in some unnecessarily risqué language, which is off-putting. If that tiny amount gets cut, the play could be entirely

The Gypsy King The Village Theatre Issaquah through April 25, Everett April 30-May 23 It’s surprisingly difficult to make something funny and have it appeal to a wideranging audience. The Gypsy King, a new musical at The Village Theatre, should hit just about anyone’s funny bone in a light and silly way. One-time local actor turned book, music and lyric writer Randy Rogel has built an old-fashioned musical that uses fairy tales, swashbuckling, Shakespearean mistaken identity, longing for home themes, and homages to other favorite productions to whip up a frothy concoction that can make you forget all about your outside worries.

Directed with tongue firmly in cheek by Richard Gray and orchestrated by Bruce Monroe, the musical direction of R.J. Tancioco makes the relatively tiny six-person orchestra sound enormous and lush.

The huge set by Jeffrey Cook ingeniously changes from one elegant castle scene to another, and the colorful and fanciful costumes dreamed up by Karen Ledger keep you firmly ground in visual silliness. (Watch for the Bride of Frankenstein hairdo.)

A tour de force for Gypsy King’s central actor, Eric Ankrim does double duty as a spoiled young prince and a bashful gypsy actor, with swift character changes on stage in dizzying succession (with a stage double, Casey Raiha), while the audience grins in

family-friendly. The main theme, wanting a place (home) where people care about you and you are appreciated for yourself, is a sweet and affirming message that everyone can identify with. Great actors struggle in awkward, halting Dying City

of his departure for war, that he had stopped loving her a long time before. It’s a pretty brutal confession at an especially painful time.

In this play, the politics of war is tangential to the personal. Craig believes in the war, while Kelly doesn’t, though apparently he has a change of heart in Iraq that Kelly doesn’t know about. He communicates with his twin in e-mails, but not with Kelly. So Peter brings the stack of e-mails with him to share with Kelly. Improbably, there are secrets revealed in the e-mails that Peter tries to shield Kelly from, after telling her over and over that she should read them herself.

There are lots of tiny inconsistencies, like Peter bringing hard copies of the e-mails to her rather than forwarding them to an e-mail address, phone calls being made and received and the phone being left in plain sight during time shifts, and other rooms in different directions offstage in a tiny apartment, making it seem much larger than probable.

Flashbacks in time are made clear with the help of Danielle Prados’ lighting design, which flashes eerily over and over to give the scenes a creepy, dreamy look. Kelly’s costume stays almost exactly the same throughout, and doesn’t do justice to her, with baggy clothing so drab and spiritless that it drags the character down even further.

If the director’s aim was listlessness, then he succeeded. However, that may not be what the playwright wanted emphasized. One description in the play refers to Craig and Kelly sitting in their New York apartment watching the cloud of dust rising around them from the tower crashes in September of 2001 – almost a chummy moment in a dysfunctional relationship. But we don’t have enough information to understand where the relationship fell apart, or why.

Dying City Seattle Public Theater Through April 11 The Seattle theater community often seems to have one giant compartmentalized mind. Clumps of theaters pop up doing Moliere, or Greek tragedies, or plays with 9/11 content. This week, 9/11 is present in three different productions: Sunlight at ArtsWest, the self-produced Recent Tragic Events at Odd Duck, and Dying City at Seattle Public Theater. Each one is a completely separate take on the fallout of that date.

Dying City deals with a soldier who has died on his tour of duty in Iraq. He didn’t die from an IED or gun battle, but apparently through an “accident” with his gun, pointed in the direction of his head. The play takes place a year after his death when his twin brother visits his widow, and there are flashbacks to his last days at home before he leaves for duty.

Shana Bestock plays the widow, Kelly, and Chris Maslen does double duty as both Craig, the soldier, and Peter, the Gay twin.

They are both actors of great capacity. Bestock is rarely seen these days on stage due to her responsibilities at Seattle Public Theater as artistic director and education director, but she is a compelling presence on stage. Directed by John Vreeke, Maslen takes great pains to differentiate the twin brothers through changes in body language, tone, speech, and attitude. He makes it as easy as possible to feel like there are three actors in the play. His Craig characterization is almost unbearably harsh, while Peter is much more likable and approachable.

However, the play itself is awkward and halting. This is a difficult in-law relationship, where Kelly changes her phone numbers so Peter doesn’t have them and is planning to move somewhere she hasn’t told him. Maceo made fun of the name Jazz Alley and he and Boulware played a sweet rendition of “Satin Doll” before saying, “We don’t play that stuff.

We like to push the constraints of the sound system.” He showed what he meant with the next number, “Make It Funky,” featuring himself, Rollins and Tooley.

Phoenix tres magnifique at home show in France

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Phoenix March 20 Dock des Suds Marseille, France “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.” These were likely the words running through the heads of Phoenix as they confronted a rather ambitious crowd last weekend in the southern city of Marseilles, France. The four-piece band actually hails from the Parisian suburb of Versailles, but these days, as the coolest French export, they’re beloved and claimed by the whole country.

Phoenix opened with “Listzomania” from their Grammy-winning album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, and immediately the audience joined lead vocalist Thomas Mars in singing the first verse and chorus – they sang loudly, contentedly, and entirely in English. These fans knew every word, every guitar riff, and exactly where to insert each hand clap. Phoenix then played “Long Distance Call” from 2006’s It’s Never Been Like That. “Lasso” was the third entry of the nearly two-hour performance inside a warehouse-style venue in a remote part of the city.

Backed by a series of vertical light panels, and at times a large rectangular one, the celebrated quartet dazzled with new and old favorites. “Lasso” was loose and bouncy, while the mid-tempo “Run Run Run” off 2004’s Alphabetical CD was boosted by a funky bass from Deck D’arcy, snappy riffs from guitarists Christian Mazzalai and Lau-

rent Brancowitz, and soft electronic spurts from possible keyboardist Robin Coudert – from my vantage point, it could’ve been Coudert, one of the permanent band members, or simply another keyboardist altogether. A blood-red backdrop during “Run Run Run” gave it a striking visual bonus.

“Girlfriend” was pure ear-candy and enjoyed a green-lit panel, a nice rattle in the middle of the song, and a dueling guitars session from Mazzalai and older brother Brancowitz.

The swingy “Consolation Prizes” closed out the main set, and by then the two-tiered Dock des Suds was an oven. Hipsters of various ages, mostly college-aged rich kids, arrived at the show in classic French style – the boys with their T-shirts, slim denims, form-fitting sportscoats and scarves, the girls adorably accessorized with clangy bracelets and flower-shaped hairpins. This was a bubbly and energetic audience, and quite civil – these were sophisticated young people who did their share of drinking and smoking, but instead of being obnoxious and unruly like some American crowds, these scenesters apologized for slightly bumping into me and also sent their cigarette puffs above their heads as a courtesy to us non-smokers – bottom line, this was as close to a perfect audience as it gets.

modern works without a single classical selection to appease the conservative element of PNB’s loyal subscriber audience.

As a showcase for the incredible talents of the PNB dancers, 3 by Dove is an out-andout success. For many in the opening crowd – especially the younger, more adventurous audience members – the program is a complete triumph. For many, however, the grouping of four stark, abstract dances – all with harsh “modern” music – came close to overkill. All major dance companies are continually adding new works to their repertoire, and PNB and Boal are at the forefront of that movement. Many groups offset the risk of introducing new works by offering a well-balanced program of mixed traditions – a short classical work, perhaps from the “all white” ballet school, a stark modern work, and a transitional piece offered together on a mixed rep program.

Boal, a great supporter of Dove, a talented choreographer who died from AIDS-related complications in 1996, chose Dove’s 1986 Vespers to open the program. Six women, 12 bentwood chairs, six variations of the same basic little black dress. The recorded score, music by Mikel Rouse, is 100% percussion.

As the six women sit on the first group of six chairs, they move in robotic unison, sometimes falling on the floor in a stylized pose. Later, they run from one group of six chairs to another group of six chairs across the stage.

Introduced to PNB audiences in 2008, the work requires precise, precision movement.

Unfortunately, the six female dancers were not quite ready on opening night. Splitsecond variations shattered the needed precision polish. There was no doubt that the talented PNB dancers would master the requirements – probably by the second night.

Vespers is a slight work, but it is an intriguing one. Inspired by Dove’s memories of his grandmother and the small church where she worshipped, the work was premiered by a Dayton, Ohio, contemporary dance group and has since been performed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

After a brief pause, Dove’s Red Angels took the stage. Featuring four of PNB’s strongest dancers on opening night, Red Angels was obviously an audience favorite. Introduced to PNB in 2005, the 1994 work features the four dancers in brilliant red leotards against a bare stage. The music, by Richard Einhorn, features a live performance by violinist Mary Rowell; the score mixes electric violin with percussion, created on the violin by the soloist. For the record, the four opening-night dancers were Ariana Lallone, Lesley Rausch, Olivier Weavers, and Lucien Postlewaite. PNB, like all major dance companies, rotates the cast throughout the two-week run, but opening night saw an unbeatable cast that elevated the work into a “must-see” category. A welcome return....

Victor Quijada’s Suspension of Disbelief followed the first intermission. The work had its world premiere at PNB in 2006. As the stage lights come up, five dancers in casual attire – T-shirts, black and gray jeans – face the audience and then back away. The various elements of the stage setting fly away with them – as they step backwards, scrims, teasers, and tormenters fly out, leaving the back stage wall and eight towering light banks at the sides as the set. Five women and six men form various combinations – all abstract, all challenging. In the final moments, all of the scenic elements return and the dancers once again face the audience.

The music by Mitchell Akiyama was commissioned by PNB for the 2006 premiere.

Two men sitting next to this reviewer found the piece “transcendent.” Another viewer in the same row found it “an endurance contest” – far different reactions, but both understandable.

Dove’s 1992 Serious Pleasures, the only new work on the program, ended the evening after another intermission. First presented by the American Ballet Theatre (Chicago), Serious Pleasures is considered Dove’s artistic response to the AIDS crisis, and sexuality in general. The work is stark, demanding, and cries out for a second viewing.

Two sets of five cubicles form a wedge on the stage. All 10 have louvered doors that add interesting light patterns to the work, and a voyeuristic element that titillated many in the audience.

Five couples dominate the work, but many other dancers support the five pairings (and, indeed, some of the dancers return in other guises in the support groups). The five men are in one set of cubicles, the five women in another set. After a lengthy section of samesex solo groupings, the men and women mix in a more traditional pairing. The women often seemed dancing to outtakes from Chicago – or auditioning for pole dancing at Sugar’s. The men were given athletic, grueling physical movements, but often seemed to be reviewing dances from West Side Story.

Dove divided the work into clearly labeled sections: “Prologue,” “Demons Of Light,” “Angels of Darkness,” “Oasis,” and the closing “Freedom.” On a single viewing, the named sequences added little to the overall impact. A second viewing, in an upcoming season, might add more meaning to the obvious structure.

Robert Ruggieri’s score, another recorded modern work, provided strong support to the often compelling work. As a statement about modern-day sex – straight or Gay – the work said little to this scribe. As a demonstration of the skill of PNB’s talented company, it was a thrilling premiere.

Albert Rodriguez: You guys are on a roll.

Congrats on the Grammy nomination!

Brian Aubert: Yeah, that was weird, huh?

Rodriguez: Did you rub shoulders with anyone interesting at the ceremony?

Aubert: It was like being at a really weird prom. It wasn’t that glamorous at the Staples Center, everyone was buying hot dogs and Cokes. Kings of Leon eventually had a party that was really fun. I did talk to Daft Punk for half an hour about Tron, and I realized halfway through the conversation that they thought I was Caleb [Followill] from Kings of Leon and I just let them believe it.

Rodriguez: How did you guys get on this tour with Muse? Had you known them before?

Aubert: We never met them. It’d be nice if there was a story that we were on a yacht in a clam-shaped jacuzzi together, but no – it was like, “Hey, you guys wanna tour with Muse?”

Rodriguez: We’ve been waiting a long time to get you here in Seattle for this album.

Aubert: I know. We had this headlining tour planned that just kept getting pushed further and further back, and then the tour with Muse came along. But we’ll be there, not just with Muse but we’ll definitely be coming back. I miss Seattle; it’s been a while.

Rodriguez: The first time I saw you guys live was at the Capitol Hill Block Party.

Aubert: We played there twice. The second time we played there, we headlined one of the nights and it was a little sad because we were the last band and they had a sound problem, so it was a little frustrating.

Rodriguez: It was a great show, but as soon as it finished, people ran like roaches – everyone scrammed to the bar and I’m not sure where you guys went.

Aubert: We went bowling. There’s a bowling alley nearby and they kept it open for us. I remember that I left my shoes in

there, so basically I had a new pair of bowling shoes.

Rodriguez: You live in Silverlake, and that’s a pretty Gay area.

Aubert: It used to be more Gay. It used to be Mexican families and Gay couples that owned homes here, but it’s changed a lot.

Rodriguez: Does the band have a Gay posse, and do you have a BGF (Best Gay Friend)?

Aubert: We have a lot of Gay friends. I’m trying to think if I have a favorite, which I don’t. [Laughs.] If I have a favorite, it’s a Lesbian friend of ours.

Rodriguez: It’s nice to see rock bands and Gay people getting along.

Aubert: I grew up in Los Angeles, and when you grow up in a metropolis that’s what you’re used to – different cultures everywhere. One thing that’s always scary is going somewhere where there’s only one type of person – that’s frightening to me, it’s a bit alarming. Then you have something like Prop 8 that happens and it’s like, “What the fuck?!” I know a lot of people who were really hurt by that. When you live in your safe bubbles like Seattle, you start to believe the world thinks like you do, and they just don’t.

Rodriguez: And we can’t just hug it out.

It’s a battle that will go on for a very long time.

Aubert: Iowa is a great example because it’s usually the first with women’s rights and civil rights. Now we have same-sex marriage in Iowa, and it’s a great, great thing.

Rodriguez: Congrats on your engagement. Is the big day happening soon?

Aubert: Thank you. Yeah, it’s happening in May. Rodriguez: What can your fans get you for a wedding present?

Aubert: They can take things away. I don’t want them to get me anything; I want them to buy themselves something nice.

Rodriguez: So when you have alone time on the tour bus, do you have visions of the future like being a cool rocker dad?

Aubert: We go back and forth about that, to be honest. We’re still not sure if that’s in our hearts. It’s not something that I have a big desire for, but you never know – things change, you never know how you’re going to feel later.

Rodriguez: We need you to populate this earth with more open-minded kids, Brian.

Aubert: I know, I know. We’ve always made those jokes. It’s so nice that a lot of our friends are having kids now; it’s actually really relieving. I think we’re going to be in good shape.

Rodriguez: Thinking back to when Silversun Pickups first came together, do you have advice for anyone starting a band now?

Maybe something you’d do differently?

Aubert: The best thing I can say is don’t listen to anybody. All you gotta do is be as good as you can be, and when luck happens, be prepared. You can’t really plan how things go. We never thought about how to achieve certain things, never thought about radio or Grammys, it was never in our radar.

Rodriguez: Last question, and it’s a doozy: How many pairs of underwear do you pack for an extensive tour?

Aubert: You know what? That’s the biggest thing. You gotta make sure you bring that more than anything else. I think everybody’s suitcases are full of socks and underwear, really. That’s reality.

delighted longtime Phoenix fans, who sang, danced, and clapped as if they’d been ordered to do so. A cover of Air’s “Playground Love” was a sweet touch, only to be followed by an extended finale of “1901” – it seemed Phoenix would close out the tune at its standard four minutes by hushing it down considerably, but they revived it into an allout dance number that concluded with the band’s name and song title flashing simultaneously in silver letters across the stage while a flurry of white lights flooded the platform area.

Given the opportunity to see Phoenix on their home turf – especially since this particular show had been sold-out for months – I can honestly say that the combined effort of the flight, train ride, and 20-minute walk from my hotel just to get to the concert was well worth it. If I never see Phoenix again, this will suffice.

continued from cover When she saw last season, Jessica realized Drag Race could be a huge opportunity for her. She applied to this season’s online casting contest and ended up winning by a landslide. “I never thought that was going to be the path to the show,” she admitted. “I was like, Oh my God, I’m here!”

Unlike a lot of the other girls, Jessica stayed out of the catfights. “It’s my reality to be polite,” Jessica explained. “I don’t like cat fights in my life, so I don’t like it on the show, too. I think the girls had a lot of problems that to me were stupid things. Some think Tatianna is too girly, but it’s her character. Maybe Raven is too strong, but that’s her character.”

Even though performing in English was a challenge for Jessica, I respected how much she would not let any language barrier get in her way. “Maybe with my language, people would think I’m not ready to be a drag performer,” she said. “But I learned I didn’t need to be afraid. I’m so proud of myself!”

Native speaker or not, Jessica wasn’t the only girl who had trouble saying “Absolut Berri Açaí” (pronounced ah-sah-eee) during the video interview competition. Jessica admitted she wrote the vodka’s name on her hand so she wouldn’t forget. “In the workroom, all the girls and I were practicing; we were saying, ‘açaí, açaí, acai!’” But Jessica said the most difficult speaking for her was when she dressed up as a chicken for the TV commercial competition. “It’s more hard to say ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ than ‘açaí,’” she revealed.

So what’s next for Jessica? She is going to perform live shows with a rock band, and she hopes to travel so she can meet her fans.

“I’ve been given a gift and I’m making the best out of it,” Jessica said. “I’m so happy to meet all these new people in my life.”
