Coming off of the trying experience of making Little Fockers – admittedly a gigantic box office hit for Universal – diving into an adaptation of Nick Flynn’s acclaimed memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City was just what the respected writer/director needed to recharge his batteries.

“I had read [the book] well before making Fockers, and I honestly think I’ve made three films – American Dreamz, Cirque du Freak, and Fockers – while I was writing the screenplay for this one,” he said with a smile.

“But when [Fockers] ended, I knew I needed to get to work on this now. The time felt right.”

The Hunger Games, a future world

my Award nominee’s most incredible performance yet. There’s no way this movie would work as well as it does without her, and while it’s early, and while the subject matter doesn’t normally lend itself to accolades, I’d go out on a limb and say she’s sensational enough to get a second Oscar nomination.

Director Ross rises to the occasion, though things aren’t completely perfect – the washed out blue tones of the Districts, filmed with handheld herky-jerkiness, can get a bit tiresome; some of the CGI effects, especially in the Capitol and showcased during the events preceding the actual Hunger Games, aren’t as well realized; and the seeds for the Peeta-Katniss-Gale love triangle aren’t particularly well-planted. But for a film this long, not once did I ever feel bored. Ross allows for the impact of given situations to fall across the viewer like a sledgehammer, two poignant moments in particular – neither of which I’ll go into – bringing me to honestly earned tears.

Will fans of the books respond more strongly to this than the casual viewer might? Maybe, but that doesn’t mean newcomers won’t find themselves swept along by the chaos and calamity all the same. Do those who dismiss the film as nothing but a rip-off of Kinji Fukasaku’s Battle Royale have a valid point? No, not really, and while I don’t completely buy Collins’ assertion that she’s never heard or seen that film b efore, her material is more based on ideas present in Greek mythology and Biblical theology than it is anything else.

For my part, I’m still in awe just how much I was blown away by The Hunger Games. Like all great literary adaptations, it remains faithful to its source material but isn’t beholden to it. Ross, Collins, and Ray have created a cinematic story that fits our time and place with devastating eloquence. It lived up to my lofty expectations, in many ways surpassing them, and it’s clear to me that the odds are definitely in this series’ favor. I can’t wait to see where the filmmakers deign to take things next.

The Hunger Games Opening March 23 I am a fan of author Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy. I find them to be a compelling allegory about the abuse of power and the price of achieving personal freedom and feel that the novels’ examinations of what the cost of sacrifice and revolution end up being are lessons well worth revisiting. Most of all, I find main character Katniss Everdeen to be a heroine whom young women everywhere should strive to emulate, and unlike her contemporaries displayed on reality television and in the pages of most young adult fiction (I’m looking at you, Stephenie Meyer), this is a female role model I’d be proud to have my own nieces grow up wanting to be like.

I can’t say I felt going in to my press screening of The Hunger Games that director and co-screenwriter Gary Ross (Collins and Breach filmmaker Billy Ray also co-wrote) was the right man for the job. I love his scripts for Big and Dave and feel Pleasantville is one of the more underrated classics of the past 15 years, but his major Oscar nominee Seabiscuit never did a heck of a lot for me, and the thought of him trying to meld his more uplifting sensibilities with Collins’ darker thematic approach didn’t seem like a good fit.

I was wrong. His version of The Hunger Games, while not perfect, is probably as magnificent as I could have hoped.

No matter what some will say, no matter how hard they try to make an argument

that a PG-13 rating dilutes the material and that he should have been more aggressive with the film’s more violent and nasty turns, the truth of the matter is that the sheer emotional weight of the scenario has been gloriously retained. There is no softening blow, no lessening punch, and the sight of children being forced to kill children for the entertainment of the privileged few and the continued subjugation of the downtrodden masses is every bit as sickening and as destructive as it deserves to be.

The movie is set in a future world where America has been undone by some sort of ecological crisis, ripped apart from within by strife, poverty, and warfare. Renamed Panem, the country has been separated into 13 districts, with the Capitol ruling from the center. During the last uprising, District 13 was destroyed while the other 12 were subjugated. In order to show their dominance, each year the Capitol stages a brutal pageant where one boy and one girl, aged anywhere from 12 to 18, are randomly chosen to compete to the death, and their gladiatorial battle is broadcast to the nation as both spectacle and as warning as to where revolution can lead.

This is the 74th year of these Hunger Games, and in District 12, 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has volunteered to compete after her 12-year-old sister Prim (Willow Shields) has her name called. She is quickly taken from her mother’s grasp and sent to the Capitol with un-

lucky fellow competitor Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), a baker’s son who shows Katniss a mysterious bit of kindness. The duo are mentored by former winner Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), a drunken lout who long ago gave up any pretense a conscript from his district would have the needed skills or attributes to potentially follow in his victorious footsteps.

It’s more sprawling and ambitious than this, of course, but to say more would potentially ruin the surprises contained within.

Granted, as this is a trilogy (to be split into four chapters, as Lionsgate has already announced that the final entry, Mockingjay, will be split into two parts), figuring out who survives this survivalist made-for-TV battle isn’t particularly difficult. But how does she get there? What sacrifices must be made?

What are the moral complications for someone who doesn’t want to be a puppet for the Capitol to remain true to her inner beliefs?

How are seeds of revolution sown? What is it to be turned into a symbol when all you want to do is live up to a promise made to a crying little sister?

These are the questions haunting Katniss as she propels herself onward, feigning teenage love for Peeta when the boy she believes her heart belongs to, Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), is back at home looking after her sister and mother. She must use her hunting skills, honed in the off-limits wilds surrounding her homestead, to search out and destroy a different kind of game, taking her humanity to its breaking point as she ends lives, protects others, and seeks revenge for what she perceives as inhumane wrongdoing.

Lawrence is spectacular. She’s in more or less 90% of the scenes, forced to steer a sprawling, 142-minute epic almost singlehandedly. Her depiction of Katniss is entirely genuine, fully lived-in, and complexly realized. I felt her struggles, both internal and external, throughout the picture, and in many ways this is the Winter’s Bone Acade-

Literary Flynn an intoxicating oddity

continued from cover was to me like being a 1930s or ‘40s studio filmmaker where you’re assigned to a project and you’re trying to be in service to something. It was great that I got to meet certain idols of mine like Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman, but it was also incredibly psychologically challenging because it was not a situation where I was able to hang myself to my own designs. It was really hard to get through that movie. Literally.”

All of which made moving into the smaller, independent production just what the doctor ordered. “In a way, I feel like I’m somebody who sometimes needs a slap in the fact to clear their head,” Weitz admitted candidly. “This movie – now called Being Flynn; the MPAA wasn’t having the original title – was really personal to me, even though it was about somebody else’s life story. The fact I was feeling like I didn’t achieve all I wanted to with Little Fockers made it all the more important to go down guns blazing with this one and not to be doing it for any other reason than to realize the vision I felt it [the book] was all about.”

Being Flynn revolves around Nick Flynn, played by Paul Dano, a somewhat lost 20-something who takes a job at a New York homeless shelter in order to find some direction in his life. Things begin to spiral out of control when his long-lost father Jonathan (Robert De Niro) – the self-described “third greatest American writer ever” – walks through the door looking for a bed for the night.

Both the memoir and the movie understand the creative process, the travails and

hardships associated with being a professional writer – the ennui, the self-loathing, the amount of ego required to think you have the talent and the ability to craft something others will want to read coupled with the merciless dread no one will actually do so.

“Creating something is an utterly personal thing,” stated Weitz. “One of my touchstones in life is going back and reading Van Gogh’s letters to his brother because there is somebody working only for the pure love doing the art. He doesn’t think he’s as good an artist as [his contemporaries], most of whom are now looked upon as lesser painters. He doesn’t believe he is going to make a living with his art, he’s just trying to make enough money to buy paint.”

“I go back to that as an extreme example, but I also think it bears upon what someone might think about Jonathan Flynn and is one of the things that drew me to the memoir. A problematic character, in some ways a horrible person, but who’s to say that the scribbling he’s doing on the back of envelopes and this novel he’s been writing for decades won’t someday be judged as a masterpiece?

Going back to Van Gogh, he never expected to sell [his paintings], much less be the most lauded painter of all time.”

The nastiness of Jonathan could, in lesser hands, be a gigantic problem, a dreary dark cloud making everything around it a depressing muddle difficult to maintain interest in. But in the hands of De Niro, an actor who could easily be accused of sleepwalking through the majority of his performances going back a decade, the man is a consistent puzzle. The iconic Oscar-winner never shies away from the man’s more disreputable attributes, yet keeps him someone the majority of viewers will be able to sym-

to see it again. It’s captured a corner of my imagination, getting me to think like I haven’t in ages, and for all my mixed feelings about it, those are traits I’ll happily celebrate now and until the end of time.

Being Flynn Now Playing Nick Flynn (Paul Dano) doesn’t know his father Jonathan (Robert De Niro). In all honesty, he doesn’t care to, as the man left him and his mom (Julianne Moore) high and dry decades ago thanks to a combination of a penal incarceration and excessive amounts of vodka. The young man doesn’t believe – or at least doesn’t want to believe – that they have anything in common, and as far as he’s concerned, it’s for the best the guy isn’t a part of his life.

Egged on by Denise (Olivia Thirlby), a friend of a friend with whom he quickly becomes intimately involved, Nick gets a job working at a local New York homeless shelter, ingratiating himself with the rest of the staff including head-man Captain (Wes Studi) and former addict turned receptionist Joy (Lili Taylor). But things spiral out of control as Jonathan walks through the shelter’s front door. Father and son are suddenly confronted with one another, and old demons do battle thanks to this reunion.

Based on Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, a memoir by Nick Flynn, writer/director Paul Weitz’s (In Good Company) Being Flynn understands the crazy indescribable lunacy that it is to be a professional writer.

The hubris, the self-infatuation, all of it mixed with a sense of doubt, a frustrating blend of indecision and fright that is as conflicting as it is natural. A writer believes in their abilities, believes they are the best at what they do, but at the same time are terrified of revealing so much of themselves they’ll be proven an obvious fraud. It’s an incredible dichotomy filmmakers have been waxing poetic about for generations, the saga of the disillusioned put-upon writer a staple of cinema since the advent of the

moving picture.

It’s the rest of the stuff where Being Flynn frustrates. The relationship between Nick and Jonathan, the way they respond to one another, none of it feels as genuine as I wanted it to. A lot of the material – as intimate, personal, lived-in, and fully experienced as it was – did not resonate. So much of the melodrama felt pulled from other, better movies (Wonder Boys, The Lost Weekend, even Weitz’s own About a Boy), the clichés pilling up to the point where they diluted the impact of the honestly realized emotions energetically percolating throughout.

Save one or two scenes where he can’t help but go enthusiastically over-the-top, I borderline loved De Niro in this. It is so rare of late that the actor finds a character worthy of his talents, one where he doesn’t feel the need to phone in his performance or rely upon tics and traits that have almost made him a caricature of his Oscar-winning past (Everybody’s Fine and Stone being notable recent exceptions). His command of Jonathan, his delusions of grandeur as he fasttalks his abilities and proclaims himself to be a literary titan, the little hints of darkness and tragedy that gleam through his eyes, all of it combines to compile a figure who in many ways is awe-inspiring.

On the flipside, I’m not sure what I make of Dano. Like just about everyone, I adored him in Little Miss Sunshine, felt his performance was one of the best things in an already excellent film. He was also good in There Will Be Blood, but that movie was more about Daniel Day Lewis’ dominating presence and the direction of Paul Thomas Anderson than it was anything else, so I’m not exactly sure I can single him out one way or the other.

Here, however, I sort of felt the same way about his Nick Flynn as I did about the characters he’s portrayed in The Extra Man, Meek’s Cutoff, and the more or less exe-

crable Gigantic. His performances intrigue and disaffect me in almost equal measure, and I can’t quite get a handle on why this tends to be the case in just about every film he’s been cast as one of the leads, though I don’t feel near the same when he’s just part of the ensemble (Knight and Day, Cowboys & Aliens). As Nick, there are times I related to him, others when I wanted to get as far away from the guy as possible, and by the time the film was over I almost didn’t care whether he dealt with his daddy and addiction issues and got on with his life or not.

All of which makes Being Flynn an oddity. Yet when Weitz gets things right, when the emotions are true and the motivations feel genuine, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the screen. I could relate to the Flynns, could understand the internal battles much better than I probably should admit. This is a movie I know I’ll see again; more than that, I want

pathize with on more than a few levels.

“I’d hear from people who have known De Niro for over 20 years,” related the director, “people like his costume designer or his trainer, how hard he was working. He was constantly going over his lines, many of which are non-sequiturs because [Jonathan] is constantly rambling, delivering his monologues stream-of-consciousness style, all of which are really hard to memorize and make them sound authentic.”

“On top of that, a month before shooting I went out with him because there was a blizzard and we needed snow for a section of the movie and we weren’t really even in production yet, there weren’t any costumes or anything, but he took what he had and we grabbed a cameraman and we zipped around in a car to various locations without any permits and shot things as if it were a student film. It was real guerrilla style, and it was moving to me to be around someone who didn’t have to work in that way anymore, had paid his dues and made his mark, and was willing to invest so much of himself into the character and into the movie, especially considering how complicated Jonathan is as a character. Whether it be Travis Bickle or Jake LaMotta, De Niro has an ability to play people who are truly horrifying yet he always finds a way to bring you really close to them.”

But when you think about some of the best motion pictures involving writers, whether they be old Hollywood classics like The Lost Weekend or 21st-century variations like Wonder Boys or Adaptation, the great ones aren’t afraid to show these individuals warts and all, don’t care if they alienate a portion of the audience by delving into every last ounce of their depressing insecuri-

ties. This sort of honesty is what sets them apart, and even if Being Flynn doesn’t quite rise to the same level it isn’t because Weitz, his cast, or anyone else involved with the production wasn’t prepared to lay every last ounce of themselves on the line.

“I’m glad you noticed that,” said the director with a smile. “That stuff is all there in Nick’s memoir, and it was important to me to make sure we stayed true to that feeling and milieu in the movie. The two writers here couldn’t be any more different, but at the same time so much the same. The younger one is desperately trying to disassociate himself from his father but at the same time wants what his father has, which is a confidence to survive; to break away from a false feeling of control over life.”

“Here’s the thing. In this film Nick is learning to be a writer in the way I like to approach creativity – in that it’s a job, it’s got its ups and downs, and basically it is something you have to devote yourself to in the same way one of the gaffers on the film devotes themselves to their profession.

While he’s looking for shelter and investing himself in this job [at the shelter] that he’s actually good at, he’s becoming a writer; he’s working at it, gathering material, living life, making mistakes and attempting to learn from them. Jonathan Flynn is grandiose because he believes himself to be one the greatest [American] writers who have ever lived. Nick Flynn is grandiose because he is feeling guilty because he wrote a short story that his mother read on the day of her [death].”

In some ways the biggest challenge in making a movie such as this one is that the

first act, it doesn’t really break any new ground. It has some unique features because it’s more a behind-the-scenes focus on the sister and mother of the bride and the wedding planners than on the bride and groom.

There is also a Jewish/Christian-rich-snob aspect (why are the Christians always rich snobs?) that creates some of the fun, but none of the break-through-ness. Mostly because there really isn’t a conflict between religions. The Jews aren’t thrilled with the Christian groom, but neither are the Christians anti-Semites, so the biggest problem might be the insertion of the prenup at the last minute.

So, the uniqueness, and the reason why this musical might actually break some ground, is in a big twist that anyone reviewing is not supposed to mention. Without revealing the actual twist, SGN readers would be interested because the musical can be thought of as a great demonstration of marriage equality. Not everyone is in love with whom they’re traditionally supposed to love.

A main plot is the focus on the sister of the bride, Jenny, who is older and unmarried, and her mother distastefully suggests that she’d make a great catch if she just lost a few pounds. Jenny is determined to make her sister’s day perfect. That means making sure that Rebecca’s (Mara Solar) ex-boyfriend and Jenny’s ex-best-friend, Marty, doesn’t ruin the day when he shows up trying to stop the wedding.

Inept choices mar well-acted Lark Eden

Carter are the cute best-friend couple that never got together. From the moment we meet Marty, we want them to be together.

Then there is Albert (Dennis Bateman), the extraordinary, extra-sensory-perceptive “I only want to serve” wedding planner, and his quirky team (Angie Louise and John David Scott). They get a fun song (“Song of Albert”) where everything that has ever treatened to go wrong at a wedding is saved

by Albert.

Rebecca’s parents – mother Judy (Leslie Law) and father Murray (John Dewar) – sing “It Shoulda Been You” to Marty as he arrives, leaving no question as to whom the family wished were the groom. Brian’s (Timothy Wilson) parents (John Patrick Lowrie and Jayne Muirhead) are also not very happy with the marriage. In fact, Georgette (Muirhead) gets a stop-the-show number about wanting to be the center of her son’s life, even if he has to be Gay for that to happen (“Where Did I Go Wrong”).

Even the best man (Aaron C. Finley) and the bridesmaid (Diana Huey) get a funny song when they sing to the bride and groom at the reception (“Love You Till the Day”).

Law and Muirhead steal the show. It’s almost a show about mothers! In a pitch-perfect cast, they manage to be hysterical and real and funny, at the same time.

A fun set (there are so many signs, it’s almost subtitled) by Carey Wong moves us into and around the many hotel rooms, including a bathroom. Costumes by Melanie Burgess are full of color and subtly emphasized each family set with complementary garb. A suitably magical moment at the end transforms Jenny into the beauty that she’s meant to be. Choreography by Christian Duhamel emphasizes the kitsch and the fun.

Lark Eden Theater Schmeater Through April 14 Three best friends grow up and grow old together in letters in Georgia. That is the sum of the new play at Theater Schmeater, Lark Eden, which just opened. Natalie Symons both wrote and directed her play. Natalie has close ties to Seattle, though she now lives in Florida, and had a reading of Lark Eden last year at the Schmee.

The three actors – Teri Lazzara, Katie Driscoll, and Michelle Chiachiere – are all terrific actors and take on this challenge with gusto. There’s the religious one who looks at everything as God’s will and wants to have tons of babies (and does). Lazzara keeps her tart and interesting, instead of devolving into such a virtuous drudge that you want to punch her.

There’s the one who says what she thinks and is given to making fun of people, though you know some of it is a protective device, as she’s stuck making the best of it taking care of both her grandmother and her mother into old age. Chiachiere walks a tight line between nasty and Joan Rivers fun-making, mostly to good effect.

And there’s the one in the middle, who frets because she doesn’t really believe in God, but isn’t sure what that means, who wants the home and family, and has to make do with only part of that. Driscoll is basically the heart of the piece, the one who subtly keeps everyone together through thick and (mostly) thin.

Scenic designer Al Angel ends up with almost too much set, since the elongated set (and an audience set into two very long horizontal lines) suggests way more movement and possibility than happens. In fact, the play is staged “reading style” where all three women stand or sit at reading stands with memory books in front of them, and never waver from that position. So, having doorways and other embellishment simply promises more and can’t deliver.

Director Symons spreads out the audience and dilutes the energy of having the three women look directly at the audience. The long sides get only part of the strength of having actors talk right to you. It’s an unfortunate choice. The fact that the actors continue to turn pages suggests that it’s a reading, rather than a fully memorized play. The lines are probably completely memorized, yet again, seem to be directed not to be.

Stretching this memory play – where we all realize that they will get old and die, as we all will – into a two-act play with intermission (when nothing particularly intermission-worthy happens) is also a mistake.

It encourages repetition and dwelling on certain ages longer than necessary.

Even so, the actors make it affecting and their love for each other is transparent. At the end of the play, when it’s clear one has finally gone to heaven, with the other family members who have made it there, it’s virtually impossible not to tear up with them.

Lucy Wainwright Roche Cuteness turned Mercy on to Lucy Wainwright Roche, but couldn’t join her at the Triple Door on March 14, so Reality did.

The opening act was the folk band Local Strangers. Aubrey Zoli had a strong voice.

Matt Hart played a nice guitar. High points were “I’ll Drift Away,” “I’m Haunted by Ghosts,” and “Letter to My Mother.” They are working on a full-length CD. Singer/songwriter Roche took the stage with her fantastic voice. Mercy liked the lyrics of her ballads. Reality found her melodies pleasing.

Lucy joked that she was nervous because she was wearing a shirt with a button that was about to open. Reality enjoyed her sense of humor.

She opened with “I Met Her in a Kingstown Bar,” an original. “Statesville” was another song by Roche. “Deliver Me to the Next Best Western” was by Richard Shindell. “We Fell in Love, I Knew It Had to End” was another song by Roche.

She had Matt and Aubrey come back for “We Took What We Had and Ripped It Apart.” They sang nice harmonies.

Lucy told a story about driving to Nash-

ville and being so tired she went straight to bed, leaving her guitar, 1,000 copies of her CD, and the keys in the car. Someone broke in and spilled her water, but cleaned it up and didn’t steal anything.

Rachel Flotard came to the stage. The two singers had met when they sang backup for Neko Case on Letterman. Rachel had a vital voice. They sang “Hungry Heart.”

Roche sang a song by her aunt, Terre Roche, called “It Runs in the Family.” She wrote “Open Season” after making a trip to Coney Island.

Lucy said her brother, Rufus Wainwright, is a musician. When he goes offstage at the end of the concert, he counts an incredible amount of time before he will come back for an encore. She doesn’t have the courage to do that. Her encore was the sweet “Here I am in Kingston Again.”

Renee Fleming Mercy took Cuteness to see Renee Fleming, singing with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall on March 16, for Cuteness’ birthday. Mercy likes to call Renee Fleming “Peggy Fleming.”

Cuteness said Fleming has a spectacular voice. Mercy agreed, as did the audience, which gave her four standing ovations.

song “Hallelujah,” and Ricky Ian Gordon’s “Night Flight to San Francisco.” Cuteness’ were Franz Lehar’s “Vilja Lied” and Erich Korngold’s “Marietta’s Lied.” They loved the final encore, “Il Mio Caro Bambino,” which they had used for their wedding.

Jazz Alley. Band members are Ben Street (bass), Blas Cordoba (vocals/percussion), and Dafnis Prieto (drums). Dominguez is a Latin jazz, flamenco, and post-bop flamenco pianist. He started in the rock group CAI before moving on to jazz.

Century’s Got Talent seeking performers

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor Century Ballroom’s West Hall, inside the OddFellows Building (915 E. Pine St.), is set to host Century’s Got Talent, a monthly all-ages talent competition featuring mem-

bers of the local community competing for a cash prize.

Century’s Got Talent officials seek new performers for the second talent show contest scheduled for April through July.

“Singers, dancers, musicians, hula-hoopers, and magicians – you name it, Century’s Got Talent wants it for four rounds of juried competitions that will take place on the second Saturdays in April, May, June, and July,” announced officials. “Performers only need to compete in one of the primary rounds. First-place winners of each month will move to the final round and compete on the main Century Ballroom stage for a cash prize. Cash prizes will also be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners in the primaries.”

Winners of the 2011 Century’s Got Talent competition include singer/songwriter Katherine Terrien, Premier Tap Company, beatboxer Bryan Houghton, and pianist Paul Cabrera. Singer/songwriter Stephanie Anne Johnson took home the grand prize as

winner of the Century’s Got Talent finals.

The first round of competition is scheduled for April 14, 8 p.m. (doors 7 p.m.).

Tickets are $10, which acts as a joint cover with other Century Ballroom Saturday night dances. The audience and competition is all ages. Bar service is available and din-

ner reservations can be made at Tin Table restaurant adjacent to West Hall.

Other dates include May 12, June 9, July 14, and the finals on July 21.

Mamma mia! continued from cover

mous. Starting in London in 1999, the show has swept around the world and been welcomed with tambourines and feather boas.

The Paramount Theater/STG brings the latest traveling company of Mamma Mia! to Seattle, and more than 10 years since its debut, it’s still just as fun.

The story is simple. A single parent raises her daughter on a Greek island where they run a guesthouse. Wanting a traditional wedding, the daughter, Sophie, desires her father to walk her down the aisle. The only problem is she doesn’t know who her father is, and according to her found mother’s diary, there are three possibilities. Without explaining her actions to anyone except her two best friends, Sophie secretly invites all three men to visit with the hopes of being able to identify her father once they meet.

All three attend leaving Sophie feeling (as the song says) “Under attack – I’m taking cover. They’re on my track, three dads, one lover.”

The show is all about threes: Sophie and her two best friends, Skye (the groom) and the two helpers around the guest house,

Donna and her two dynamos, and the three potential fathers – all these groups add to the show. Sophie (Chloe Tucker) is the bride-to-be. Tucker’s voice is strong but she approaches each song with hesitation and it’s not until the second line of the song that her voice’s strength and power come through. The groom Sky (Happy Mahaney) plays the role well. His voice is strong and adds to Sophie’s stage presence. His name is earned and his character is believable and charming. The bride’s mother Donna (Kaye Tuckerman) does a great job showing angst and edgy anticipation of her daughter’s wedding. Tuckerman takes control of the lead and uses it to her advantage. Her voice is strong – especially in her song “The Winner Takes it All,” her acting is spot-on, and her persona works perfectly in the musical. Donna’s group-mates Rosie and Tanya (Mary Callanan and Alison Ewing) do the job that they are meant to as sidekick characters without stealing focus. Callanan adds wonderful comedy and charm when she sings “Take A Chance on Me,” without being over the top. Ewing has a powerful voice that rings clear and loud during her solo, “Does Your Mother Know?” The three potential fathers (Paul Deboy, John-Michael

The three men show their different personalities and different reactions to the knowledge of having a potential daughter getting married. Each of the men has a solo or duet with Donna (“Thank You for the Music,” “The Name of the Game,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You”) and each allow their voices to harmonize without dominating.

The ensemble of the show definitely deserves mention. They work as a Greek chorus (pun intended). The harmonizing is spot on and their simple actions add to the individual songs. When they become part of the show, as with the bigger scenes or dance numbers, the ensemble works together and explodes with energy. Not a single one even attempted to steal focus and all of them add to the show, defining the role of a supporting cast.

The music is not original for this musical, as it was originally written for the 1970s smash hit group ABBA by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who were on board with writing the musical from its very start.

After having Catherine Johnson write a fictional storyline, the team incorporated the well-known songs into the plot and the musical exploded. Starting with the hit “The Winner Takes it All,” the team went on to use “Super Trouper,” “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Dancing Queen,” and, of course, the title song, “Mamma Mia.” Since the show’s debut in London 1999, the musical has gone around the world with great success. Following its Broadway opening in October 2001 (where it is still currently running), the musical was nominated for five Tony Awards. While winning none of them, it has gained the prestigious honor of being the 10th longest-running Broadway show in history. A film version (starring Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Amanda Seyfried) was released in 2008 to great acclaim, becoming the United States’ third highest-grossing musical film.

continued from page 25 characters depicted within the narrative are about still very much alive, living (and, at least in the case of Nick, writing) in New York this very day. “The actors have to feel like they’re doing justice to the person but at the same time not doing an imitation,” Weitz explained. “I will tell you, one thing I learned on Little Fockers because I had so much collaboration thrust upon me is that my capacity to collaborate in a healthy way, in a much healthier way on this movie, was greater than I thought it was. I was not as possessive as I might have been.”

“In this case, Nick Flynn was around, read every draft I wrote, and was there doing shooting. But Nick is an artist and a truly generous spirit, and I think [he] would have been unhappy if I didn’t feel like this was a personal movie for me and that I didn’t feel like I could call my own shots.

He’s been through too much shit to let his ego get the best of him. He has an ego, he tells me he does, and he certainly gave his opinions about things, but the final decision was always mine. He loves creation, loves seeing things come together in an artistic way, so having him around was like having a good angel on set.”

And Jonathan? Did he and De Niro ever meet? “That was quite an experience,” chuckled Weitz. “Being able to go out with Nick and De Niro and meet Jonathan and see how egotistical he still is, it was something. The fact that when he met De Niro, Jonathan wasn’t intimidated in the least, just asking him if he thought he was going to be able to pull [portraying him] off.”

“And that was a great artistic license for De Niro, because he realized he could in turn be as egotistical or as naked or as raw or whatever else he wanted to be in portraying Jonathan, because the real Jonathan wouldn’t have had it any other way. De Niro is clearly not a racist or a homophobe, but he’s playing a character who is, and it is interesting to me to see people going to aspects of a personality they do not in fact

possess themselves. He just went for it, and watching him work in that way I found very inspiring.”

There is a weird irony in that this highly personal movie filled with darkness and despair, no matter how tinged with comedy and reverie as it may be, is coming out barely a month ahead of American Reunion, the decade-later sequel to the R-rated teen comedy smash American Pie that put Paul and his brother Chris on the Hollywood map. It is an irony not lost on the director as well. “It is kind of odd,” he admitted with a crooked smile. “There’s a unique full-circle symmetry there that’s kind of hard to miss.”

“Honestly? It’s really nice. I want to own that experience in life, the fact that Chris and I were able to make the most of that situation. I’m very proud of American Pie. It’s allowed me to run the gamut between studio filmmaking and independent filmmaking.

I love watching Darden brothers films, but I grew up watching studio films like Imitation of Life. I have a sense of both things, and I’d like to not restrict myself in what I find meaning in. In this case, I really like American Reunion. I think they do a great job.”

“Listen, our attack on the first film was to make a feminist version of a teen sex comedy. I’m not sure that’s been anybody else’s attack on this material since then, but that was what we were consciously trying to do.

Beyond that, without judging anything from that spectrum, I really liked seeing these guys together after not seeing them onscreen together for over seven years. It’s nice.”

As for Being Flynn, Weitz hopes audiences head to the theater and take a chance on the film sure they’ll take away much to mull over and ponder if they do so. He’s proud of the movie, glad that he didn’t pull any punches, happy that he went to so many dark and bleakly comic corners in order to bring Nick Flynn’s memoir to life on the screen.

“There’s certainly a feeling in [Hollywood] that only a certain behemoth style of film can be made now,” said Weitz matterof-factly. “That makes [filmmakers] feel rebellious. Makes many of us want to take a risk. I’m interested in looking back on things 20 years from now, looking back at an entire body of work.”

“But for now, I want audiences to feel like as they’re witnessing experiences they’ve never had, that there are elements that they can’t help relating to personally. I want them to think about their lives, about their parents, about how it all fits together. Everybody has humor, some sense of irony about their own lives, something that gets them up in the morning; I find that very realistic and a great lesson on how to get along in life.”

Gary Kramer: You tend to play uptight or vulnerable, and Harriet is a little of both.

What drew you to this character?

Emily Blunt: I liked that she was a complex girl in a complex situation – that’s fun to play. She’s bubbly and tenacious and good at her job, but she suffers this loss when her boyfriend goes missing/is presumed dead.

What a predicament, to be on this crazy mission with perseverance and hope and she’s feeling grief and loss! She has this huge spirit.

Kramer: You have some interesting body language in the film – slightly rigid in the early scenes, then depressed with crying jags and eventually relaxed and romantic.

How do you approach your character’s disposition?

Blunt: I don’t really have a conscious awareness of it. The physical stuff happens when you feel [it] underneath. She’s proficient and spirited and gutsy, and there’s a briskness and upbeat way in how she goes about life. But then the news she receives [about Robert] – what that does to her! You have to put yourself in that person’s position and figure out what’s going on under her skin.

Blunt: Yeah. [Laughs.] … This profession is quite a challenge because it’s shapeshifting and it’s a business where you need a helmet in many ways. It’s a miracle than anyone can make it in this overcrowded, competitive business. I feel unfathomably lucky.

Kramer: There is also a fear of an epic fail in the film. How have you dealt with disaster?

Blunt: Emotionally. I don’t know that I’m a pragmatist. I’d probably spiral and rationalize. I have a brief moment of spiral….

Kramer: The sheikh talks about having faith. Where do you find this non-religious faith in your life?

Blunt: I think in those I love and those around me. I draw a lot from the people in my life. You do have to find it within yourself to concentrate on the good stuff and not lament or dwell on it. It’s all water off a duck’s back. Otherwise you can miss out on a lot. I try to be positive in the moment and maintain the good things.

Kramer: Were you familiar with the book, which is a bit different from the film?

What do you like to read?

Blunt: I read some of the book, but I don’t try to read adaptations. You have to go on what the script is. I like to read everything.

continued from cover “The Dirty Pop sound is basically a blend of the highlights of popular music all mashed up together,” DJ Drew G told SGN. “It’s not just dance music, it’s a cornucopia of sound. Electro, rock, classical, jazz, Latin, there’s a touch of everything blended together.”

The “Dirty” references the edgier sound that he’s given his mixes. “The original Dirty Pop party came about from a brainstorming session with a friend and promoter in NYC by the name of Chris Ryan,” explained Drew G. “We put together the first Dirty Pop in NYC at the now defunct Hose in the East Village. The party then moved all around the city and spread south and eventually west, to L.A. And now we’re bringing it to Seattle!”

DJ Drew G told SGN he’s excited to bring Dirty Pop to the Pacific Northwest because Seattle is the entertainment hub of the region.

make it the location of Dirty Pop in Seattle,” he said.

DJ Drew G’s mixes hit you hard and then – boom! – he’s on to the next song. It’s fast, frantic, and oh-so good. He promises you won’t have to sit through a monotonous 15-minute track.

“I feel like a lot of DJs still play these long, dragged-out remixes, I don’t really think my generation really loves an epic, long remix anymore,” he said.

“We all have ADD and want to know the words to every song.”

To say that Drew G is booked is an understatement. Nearly every single weekend – from now until the end of the year – he’s scheduled to perform in clubs and at festivals around the world. Still, he’s taken by the Emerald City.

“My partner recently brought me to Seattle and I loved it and spent the majority of my time out and about looking for the right space to host Dirty Pop,” he said. “Neighbours Seattle GM, Steve Tracy, is amazing and sees the concept for what it is and isn’t afraid to try something fun and new! I’m very excited to see the party mature and grow in its new home.”

“As far as future projects, my remix partner Brian Cua and I are lucky to be working with Beyoncé on a few tracks,” said Drew G. “It’s kind of exciting getting to remix my favorite diva. Brian and I truly are blessed and honored to do what we do.”

As if looking drop-dead gorgeous wasn’t enough, Drew G is talent personified. He comes from a musical background and can play 10 different instruments including the guitar, drums, and keyboards. He “gets” music and what makes people move.

When he first started out in the club scene, he was mentored by the great Peter Rauhofer. “I reminded him of himself, and how I had no limits or boundaries,” said Drew G. “I like to think that’s the lesson I took home from working for Peter,” he said. “Follow your dreams no matter what.”

In his spare time, Drew G donates time and money to pro-LGBT equality campaigns. He’s also an avid supporter of President Obama. “I honestly don’t see Obama losing this election,” he told SGN. “I say ‘no’ to Mitt Romney and especially ‘no’ to that psycho Rick Santorum. They can’t get it together within their own party, so how do they think they are going to win a general election? Just won’t happen, so I foresee four more years of progress.”

At the end of the day, however, it’s all about the party. Drew G promises that Dirty Pop is going to blow your mind. On April 5 and every Thursday thereafter, Drew G says you can expect, “Hot go-gos, mashups, vocal remixes, and cheap drinks in an uninhibited environment where you can let loose and have fun!”

“I look forward to bringing Dirty Pop to Seattle and really pushing the boundaries of the scene,” he said. “See everyone every Thursday night at Neighbors Seattle!”

Kramer: What experience do you have with fly-fishing, or Yemen, for that matter?

Blunt: None! I’d only watched the horrific turmoil in Yemen on the news. We shot in Morocco, where they shoot every desert scene in every movie. I don’t remember being a high-achieving fisherwoman. My dad took us on these expeditions, but I don’t have a stomach for it. It was a pukefest. My little brother had a better stomach for deep sea shark fishing than my sister and I. Kramer: Are you more of a traveler/adventurer or a homebody?

Blunt: It’s funny, I’m a bit of both. I love traveling and my parents who are big historians would take us off to amazing far-off places – Egypt, Crete, South Africa, Australia – and I think they loved it. It was not a lying-on-a-beach holiday. My mom said, “We are going to get out and soak up this culture!” But I also get to go away and have these remarkable experiences on movie sets, and once I come home from that Neverland experience, I just want to be at home and sit on the couch and watch the Food Network.

You have to balance being nomadic and being at home amongst the familiar.

Kramer: You get to wear some pretty nice frocks in this film. Are you still into the “laid-back bohemian” look you told me you had when we last spoke for your film, My Summer of Love? What’s your sense of style these days?

Blunt: I don’t know if I’m bohemian now.

I morphed into edgier. As for my character’s clothes, there was a sweetness to what she wore – cardigans. I’m not a cardigan fan, but I love that aspect of creating a character, it makes you feel like someone else when you look in the mirror. You walk differently.

Kramer: You also told me when we spoke that you dread romantic moments in film. Is that still true, even with Ewan McGregor as the love interest?

Blunt: [Laughs.] I don’t remember saying all these silly things! I think I usually approach [love/sex scenes] humorously now.

I usually laugh throughout most of it. With Ewan it wasn’t as physical, just the chemistry stuff. They are technical, and it’s embarrassing. It’s never sexy.

Kramer: Harriet has romantic troubles, but in real life, you’ve been fortunate in your relationship [with John Krasinski]. Can you discuss your secrets to a good relationship?

Blunt: Keep it interesting. Have adventures!

Kramer: Salmon Fishing is about achieving the impossible. What is something you’ve done that’s been an uphill climb and how did you handle it?

Blunt: Probably this job.

Kramer: Talking to me?!
