RuPaul’s Drag Race Gay rights celebrated at 21st Rock ‘n’ roll competition annual GLAAD Media Awards sends another contestant home

Being able to lip-sync is a crucial skill for any drag queen, but so is the ability to deliver a song in your own voice. This week on RuPaul’s Drag Race, the queens found that out with a musical competition that featured rock and roll as the chosen form of expression. I recently chatted with Sahara Davenport, who was eliminated after a strong and uncompromising run that culminated in the rocked-out singing exercise.

On March 13, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), a media watchdog group promoting fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of LGBT individuals and issues in all media, held their 21st Annual Media Awards in New York City.

Cynthia Nixon, openly Lesbian actress from Sex and the City and a Tony Award winner, was honored with the Vito Russo Award for making strides in eliminating homophobia for her recent work with Fight Back New York, a group focused on marriage equality for Gays and Lesbians. Nixon joins past Vito Russo Award winners like RuPaul, Rosie O’Donnell, and Tom Ford. Only openly LGBT entertainers are eligible for consideration.

Joy Behar, outspoken co-host of The View since 1997, was presented with an Excellence in Media Award for her work to increase understanding and visibility of the LGBT community. Little Ashes, an indie film starring Twilight star Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali, won for Outstanding Film, limited release.

Gavin Creel, the star of the Broadway musical revival Hair, accepted a special recognition for the show.

Each year, the annual GLAAD awards are presented at two events; 24 of 32 awards were announced on March 13, and the remaining winners will be announced April 17 in L.A. and June 5 in San Francisco.

Runaways gives young actors a chance to stretch

Shannon does a delicious take on legendary record producer Kim Fowley.

Fowley is larger than life, and playing folks like that can be tough. Shannon finds a groove, catching all of Fowley’s amoral bombast without turning into a cartoon.

First-time writer/director Floria Sigismondi does a great job of unscathed, Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) keeping the story under seems to have had the roughest time. Still, control. The Runaways Opening March 19 Hot teenage sex kittens who can make you swoon, kick your ass, and rock the house. It sold in 1975, and it still sells today – or will it?

The Runaways were the first all-girl rock band. They embodied everything that rock stood for in the late ‘70s. More importantly, they put young women center stage, powerful young women who rocked and partied like the boys. They showed a generation that women could be sexy and powerful at the same time.

While they strutted the stage, stealing moves from their male rock forebears and giving those moves a feminine twist, they were also undeniably exploited. Their manager Kim Fowley (played by Oscarnominated actor Michael Shannon) knew he was on to something huge and played up the fantasy of out-of-control teenage girls on the run.

The members of the band came through the experience with varying degrees of success. Joan Jett (Kristine Stewart) went on to a long career in the music biz. Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton) carved out a niche for herself in the ‘80s music scene, and Micki Steele went on to record with The Bangles. Though none of the band members emerged from the experience

Though I have in the past found her personally irritating, Stewart is a real actor.

She stole scenes from Emile Hirsch in a small but pivotal role in Into the Wild – no easy task. At 19, Stewart has been at it for 10 years. She becomes Jett without slipping into parody. Her future looks bright so long as she can establish herself outside the Twilight behemoth.

Paramount screens “Silents from the South Seas”

small Marine outpost in the South Seas, the young, boozing, smoking, jazz-listening, and oh-so over-the-top sinning prostitute Sadie meets Sergeant O’Hara (Walsh) and begins to fall for him.

Unfortunately for her, though, she also meets Mr. Davidson, a “moralist” preacher who tries to get Sadie to change her ways.

Davidson has pull with the island’s governor and threatens to have her deported if she doesn’t repent.

T h e Wu r l i t z e r, however mighty it may be, doesn’t seem to overpower the film, or S w a n s o n ’s over-the-top character. It only compliments the wild young woman and the rest of the cast.

Only two Silent Movie Mondays remain this month with the “Silents from the South Seas” theme. Next week’s screening on March 22 is Tabu: A Story of the South Seas.

Tabu is commonly held as one of the greatest masterpieces of silent film – don’t miss it.

Silent Movie Mondays begin at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre (911 Pine Street).

Coffee and a few food items are available, and prices are more reasonable than most theaters. A small bar is available for those with ID.

Celebrating 37 Years!

Rapace armors up for Dragon Tattoo’s Lisbeth

Kramer SGN Contributing Writer The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Opening March 19 Swedish actress Noomi Rapace gives a star-making performance as Lisbeth, the title character in the film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She provides this dazzling thriller – based on the late Stieg Larsson’s international bestseller – with a visceral kick. As Lisbeth, the actress gets to sleep with both men and women and mete out her own sense of justice – which includes punishing her rapist, in one memorable sequence.

The story concerns Mikael (Michael Nyqvist), a journalist facing a prison sentence. He is summoned by a powerful man to solve the mysterious, decades-old death or disappearance of a teenage girl. Lisbeth, who is secretly following Mikael’s moves via electronic surveillance, stealthily provides him with a clue or two. Eventually, she reveals her identity and works with him in earnest.

In a recent phone interview, Rapace claimed that she was nervous to take the role because of the immense popularity of Lisbeth. “It was a suicide mission in a way, because everybody has so many feelings about who she was. I had to force away the outside world – close my eyes and ears – and focus on what I thought and what I wanted to do. I had to find my own personal Lisbeth.”

The actress did a remarkable job. She sees the character as “a fighter, and a survivor … but someone who never sees herself as a victim and finds a way to fight back.

Lisbeth takes the law in her own hands because she doesn’t trust society. She has her

own way of thinking and handling things.”

The character is very empowered, and Rapace had to suit up in a kind of armor to become Lisbeth. To accomplish this, the actress channeled her inner tomboy. She recounts training five times a week for six months doing Thai boxing, and dieting to develop a “more masculine” look.

“I wanted to be more like a boy in my body, but I didn’t want to starve myself to be skinny,” she said. Her goal was to become fit enough to do her own stunts, such as driving a motorcycle “for real.”

That said, Lisbeth’s multiple piercings – which give the character her distinctive punk look – gave the actress pause. “I couldn’t take all of them at the same time,” she admitted sheepishly. “I had two done at a time over seven months.” Meanwhile, she worked with makeup and costume designers, along with the film’s director Niels Arden Oplav, to grow and cut her hair to create Lisbeth’s “look.” Rapace recalls, “We wanted her to be extreme and odd, in a way.

We didn’t want a cliché.”

Likewise, the titular dragon tattoo was a very specific element for the character’s identity. “We worked on the tattoo for months. I wanted it to be really aggressive and brutal. It’s a message to the world to stay away. Her whole outfit is a uniform,” Rapace said, disclosing that she has no tattoos in real life.

The actress worked equally hard on Lisbeth’s mindset – shaping her character’s inner thoughts as carefully as she developed her outer shell. She opined, “I think that she’s afraid of love. She is beaten and raped, but she can find strength again. With love, she doesn’t know how to behave, and it’s dangerous for her.”

DISH! variety show benefits Lifelong AIDS Alliance

by James Whitely SGN Staff Writer DISH! variety show benefit March 14 Vera Project On Sunday March 14, Dual Power Productions presented DISH!, an all-ages Queer variety show at the Vera Project in Seattle Center. The fabulous variety show featured the glamorous emcees Sister Stella Standing

(aka Sister Alysa Trailer) and Sister Daya Reckoning of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Abbey of St. Joan.

The show had everything from drag kings to drag queens, burlesque to boylesque, and comedy to poetry. DISH! served as a benefit for the film Heart Breaks Open and the Lifelong AIDS Alliance.

Performers included Gay Bingo’s Aleksa Manila, R Place Lashes stars Lady Chablis and Sharon Huzbenz, the

She’s a sexual spirit and fucks whomever she wants to fuck. I don’t think she ever analyzes herself. She follows her impulses and does what she wants to do.”

The actress, who is married, laughed at the suggestion of emulating her on-screen character’s freespirited behavior offscreen. But she likes the idea of following one’s impulses.

While Lisbeth’s Lesbian relationship is more implied than her more explicit affair with Mikael, Rapace threw herself into the sex scenes.

“I had to put away my vanity. We needed those scenes to understand Lisbeth; it was an important puzzle piece.”

Yet it was the film’s rape scene that really tried the actress’s mettle. “I had nightmares for weeks after [filming] the rape scene. It affects you. I hate when you see rape scenes on the big screen and it’s ‘entertainment.’ For me it was extremely important that the audience can feel Lisbeth’s panic and that she’s stuck in this situation – tied up and being [abused]. Shooting it was ‘going to hell’ for a week. But we came out of it.”

Viewers will come out of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo wowed by Rapace and feeling exhilarated. With two more installments in Larsson’s “Millenium” trilogy forthcoming – and an American remake already in the works – it will be interesting to see where Lisbeth goes from here, and how far Rapace will go to portray her.

The entirety of the film is shot like a documentary; actors improvise scenes in real places while cameras follow the action in cinéma vérité style.

Smart Sunlight exposes 9/11 controversies

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Sunlight ArtsWest Through April 3 Sunlight, by Sharr White, is an incredibly smart, thoroughly well-written play focusing on our modern ethics. How should we reconcile the legal about-face our country took after 9/11, when cadres of government

lawyers gave permission for “special interrogations” that were actually illegal acts of torture? ArtsWest is hosting a world premiere of Sunlight, a National New Play Network play, where a pool of several theaters agree to premiere a script so that it has more than one production at its inception.

This intimate play focuses on a small family: a college president, his daughter, and her husband, who was a protégé of the college president and who the president made

ernment lawyer, and baffled that his wife wants to leave him. John Wray plays college president Matthew, who is so outraged by his ex-protégé being linked to permission for torture that he has secretly vandalized the dean’s law school office, and is now embroiled in scandal and possibly losing his position.

Karen Nelsen plays Maryanne, the longtime assistant to the college president, who is almost part of the family. Nelsen’s tart tongue and beleaguered attitude is a refreshing amusement that punctuates the serious tone of the play. Her presence effectively keeps the play from sinking into maudlin darkness.

The set, by Christopher Zinovitch, is a homey, charming open-floor-plan house, suitable for a college president. All the action takes place in the living room area.

Director Vanessa Miller allows actions and emotions to come to a slow boil during the course of the night.

The first act starts with the swirling controversy around the college president being accused of vandalizing the law school.

Charlotte and Maryanne (or Midge or Mimi) are trying to cope with the uproar and contain it somehow. The second act is where the men square off over the ethical dilemma.

For those who take the position that torture is never justified – a position more people would hold in Seattle than many other places – the justification for Vincent is strong enough so that one might understand his actions, if not condone them. But the play makes good points for each side, allowing us to examine a difficult issue.

In particular, Peggy Gannon’s performance as a smart, conflicted, driven, modern woman with a deep tragedy in her recent past is restrained, yet powerful. Since Charlotte has done none of the controversial actions, she becomes the audience, not daring to take sides, yet unable not to. dean of the law school after the husband’s stint as a government lawyer. Now, several years later, the husband is being investigated in his role of finding legal loopholes for torturing captive “enemy combatants.” The college president is outraged, his daughter is about to leave her husband, and everything is falling apart.

One outstanding aspect of this script is that it could have been so “talky” since its focus is on an academic family. But Sunlight avoids a lot of academic or legal speak, keeping the conversation down-to-earth so that everyone can identify with this family.

The very solid cast includes Peggy Gannon as the daughter Charlotte, who is strong and abrasive, yet damaged in some way.

Herculina/Hercule’s Noisy Jammer Transgender adventures a unique presentation

Herculina falls in love with a girl, Sara (Allison Strickland), who is alternately bitchy and intrigued by Herculina and seems like she almost could return Herculina’s love.

When Herculina is sent from the orphanage and Sara is employed with a world-traveling family, Hercule launches an effort to travel the world to find her. The adventures she/he has on that journey comprise the rest of the play. Strickland does a nice job of playing the fickle flirt. Adria LaMorticella plays a jealous orphan, and then a couple of boys.

She is fun as the jealous, tattletale orphan, in particular.

The set, by David Gignac, is typically spare, but uses solid wooden tables and small benches to denote school, office, and other locations. Afton Pilkington uses costume design to good effect, especially to help actors change characters with swift costume changes. Director Linda Lombardi keeps the action flowing quickly, which helps keep the audience engaged.

It’s probably too absurdist to really expose an accurate historical attitude toward hermaphrodites, but it’s fun to see the actors tackle the odd subject and infuse it with a certain acceptance. There are amusing moments of gender exploration, such as when Hercule is taught how to fight or kiss like a man. But the script kind of peters out at the end, without a clear destination, so you’re not left with any kind of resolution of the situation. But maybe that’s just how life is.

The Adventures of Herculina Annex Theatre Through March 27 The Adventures of Herculina by Kira Obolensky, currently staged by Macha Monkey at Annex Theatre, is based on a true story.

Herculina was raised as a girl in the mid1800s until she was “diagnosed” as a boy at the age of 18. Kira Obolensky wrote the play within the last decade, but based it on this true-life character. Ultimately, this outof-the-ordinary person ends up in a freak show, not finding anywhere else in life that fits his/her circumstances.

The play, described as a “dark comedy,” has some amusing moments. Meghan Derr has the difficult role of Herculina and Hercule. Derr is a compelling actress with a strong presence. She handles the ambiguity of the role with finesse. The play is written to allow her to show much less distress about her situation than it causes other people. Herculina is less worried about her “odd” feelings toward girls than either the girls around her or the adults who supervise.

Most of the cast plays multiple roles.

While this helps keep the body count down, it may not be that helpful to the production, as the audience has to keep track of the evermorphing characters. For most of the first act, Mark Fullerton and Amelia Meckler play a priest and abbess who tend an orphanage of young girls. Lucky for Herculina, they are not the ogres they could be to her, though when her re-genderization happens, they end up removing her from the school.

like he’s found something that he does really well, which is a big boost to his self-esteem – his old jobs driving a taxi and working at a factory haven’t made him feel very special.

But his fiancée deals him a blow by getting pregnant by someone else while he’s gone.

In return, he has an affair with a skater, gets a huge (and we mean really, really huge) case of STDs from her, and thinks he has fallen in love with her.

It’s all played for laughs, and the naïve attitudes of the ‘50s are nothing like the social norms of today, even though the play was written only a few years ago. The point of the plot is not very clear, but the noise and unique presentation certainly give you a whole different idea of what theater can be.

Edwards is a very appealing central character actor, staying true to his quest and even his girl. The whole cast agilely recreates the derby atmosphere, and even set changes are done adroitly. Accents are generally acceptable. Jay Irwin adds hilarity as a radio announcer who slides his “station” on sideways to report derby action. Christine Nelson plays the tough derby girl who is paid to sleep with Lovington and gives an affecting performance of someone who really wants love, but is afraid to show it.

The ending seems to run out of steam when Lovington leaves the derby, but to the extent that leaving excitement behind for real life is many people’s experience, maybe that’s part of what the playwright thinks is important for growing up. The Jammer Balagan Theatre Through April 3 And now for something completely different! Go to the theater to watch the roller derby? Really? Well, kinda, if Balagan Theatre has its way. It’s presenting The Jammer

by Rolin Jones. When Jones wrote his script, he also attached a huge request to the director, Terri Weagant: Under no circumstances should the actors wear skates!

Weagant and her team have taken that challenge and designed all the furniture to move, instead, on wheels! So you get all the noise and metal wheel sounds you can handle, anyway. The actors glide around in “skate mode,” which is funny, but if they are also pushing some furniture, the racket is satisfyingly loud. The sleek track set by Jen Butler works well for the piece.

The story is based in the 1950s, and involves aspects of Catholicism and New York life. A pious young man, Jack Lovington (Nick Edwards), falls in love with the roller derby and decides to leave his two dead-end jobs to earn more money on the derby circuit. But his fiancé thinks it means he’s dumping her, even though he tells her he wants to earn money for a nice honeymoon.

Going on the road means that this naïve guy is going to learn a lot more about the wild world out there, and he does. Overwrought Big Pink outdone by opening band

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Spyro Gyro’s Down the Wire Mercy and her friend Doright Fibrearts went to see Spyro Gyro at Jazz Alley, last week. The group was touring in support of their aptly titled new release Down the Wire.

Leader Jay Beckenstein alternated luscious performances on sax and clarinet, at points playing both at once. Julio Fernandez’ guitar was delicious. Elegant keyboard was provided by Tom Schuman. Scott Ambush’s bass was nice and funky. Bonnie B.’s percussion was hot. The audience gasped in appreciation at the way the group ratcheted up the improvisations.

The band started with some new pieces then circled back through a number of classics before returning to their new CD. Doright pointed out that the players clearly take pleasure in each other and the music.

Mercy agreed they benefited from playing together for more than 30 years. High points were “A Quote From Mr Z,” “Unspoken,” “Good-Bye Pork Pie Hat,” and “Ice Mountain.”

Sneaking into Rainbow City rehearsal Mercy listened to a rehearsal of Rainbow City Band’s new concert and is very excited about it. It will feature the Russian masters Stravinsky, Shostakovitch, Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky. She knows the high points are going to be Shostakovich’s “Fifth Symphony” and Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.”

Mercy’s friend Lucidity Piccolo had that smile of deep delight as she talked about the music.

During the rehearsal, director Michael Clark was recruiting members of the concert band to join the marching band. He said, “This organization is about social change.

It’s hard for people to hate you when you are playing fun music.”

One band member joked about how difficult the music was, asking, “What are you trying to do to us?”

Michael responded, “I love you enough to challenge you.”

Another player said, “You must love us a lot, then.”

Mercy could see the music was coming together. She thinks you are going to enjoy it.

The Big Pink

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer The Big Pink with A Place To Bury Strangers March 12 Neumos London-based fuzz-rock duo The Big Pink brought their bombastic live show to Seattle for the first time last week, selling out Neumos and leaving desperate fans scrambling at the door for extra tickets.

They’ve been the great, mythical hope of 4AD Records devotees since A Brief History of Love dropped on U.S. shores in late 2009, all pretty cover art and dreamy-electro rock soundscapes tightly wound within. The band was formed by Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, but they took the stage at Neumos as a four-piece and wasted no time in getting right to the point.

Opening with hit single “Too Young To Love,” the sound was just right – loud, fuzzed-out, technically perfect in most all respects. Unfortunately, it was a bit hard to see who exactly the other band members were due to the smoke billowing into the packed house and around the massive amps and lighting, but it’s safe to assume drummer Akiko Matsuura and touring bassist Leopold Ross were the shadowy figures enlisted for this tour. “At War With The Sun,” “Velvet,” and “Crystal Visions” were heavily textured and spot-on, and the youngish crowd responded with rapt enthusiasm.

the peppy arena-rock attitude, pumping the air Dave Gahan-style and propping a foot on the monitor to rock out. It seemed a little heavy-handed for a band still so relatively new, even if he is the former hard-rocking guitarist for Alec Empire. Cordell kept his hood over his head most of the evening, which seemed a little unnecessary, as well.

Fans of 4AD traditionally don’t like hints of goofy rock-posturing thrown in with their shoegazing, but as the quartet plowed through most of Brief History (plus one pleasant but unremarkable new song), the young crowd didn’t seem to notice or care.

Though a bit festival-laden and over-thetop for Neumos, it couldn’t be said that The Big Pink weren’t good. They delivered their hottest singles and were true to their lush, heavy/soft dynamics, but the set – and the band – are oddly hard to digest as a whole package. “Dominoes” closed the evening, which may be the biggest anomaly and the worst track on the record. Seattle’s blind date with The Big Pink was pleasant on paper, but a little overwrought in the flesh.

The ones to watch were openers A Place To Bury Strangers, who’ve already gained a large and dedicated cult following and impress without trying too hard. The Brooklyn-based noise-rockers have two full-lengths out on Mute Records. After seeing their potently tantalizing set, it would be money well spent to scoop up both releases and cross your fingers that they’ll kick the headliners to the curb next time.

guitarist of Against Me!, who added me to his guest list at the touch of an iPhone two weeks ago when no one else could squeeze me onto their list – no joke, that was a difficult show to get into, and the lead singer for the headlining act himself came through for me at the last minute. Gabel was munching on a burrito from Taco Guaymas, which I don’t think he liked (it looked gnarly), when I dropped by Against Me!’s dressing room at Neumos right before sound check on March 1. We spoke briefly about the band’s upcoming album, set for a summer release, and Goldfrapp’s new CD that I have yet to listen to. Gabel is as sweet as he is sexy, and I surely owe him a foot rub for putting me on the guest list for his sold-out show. BTW, Against Me! rocked the house!

Calling all Animal Collective fans! Your chance to see the electro-pop quartet’s film Oddsac before its June DVD release is coming soon. The visual-audio experimental project, under the direction of first-time filmmaker Danny Perez, highlights music from the acclaimed group whose 2009 recording Merriweather Post Pavillion was named Album of the Year by Entertainment Weekly, Spin and Pitchfork magazines. Oddsac will be screened at the Egyptian Theatre on March 30 – $15 gets you in the door for either the 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. screenings. The

Seattle screening is said to feature a Q&A session with Perez and some members of Animal Collective.

Corinne Bailey Rae phoned into the office recently from Los Angeles. If I can make out what she’s saying with her very soft voice on my tape recorder, then you’ll see an interview right here in The Music Lounge on April 9, three days ahead of her performance at the Moore Theatre (visit www. stgpresents.org for ticket info). The multiple Grammy nominee released her second album The Sea a month ago, an anticipated followup to 2006’s self-titled debut, which featured the smash hit “Put Your Records On.” We talked for only 10 minutes, as she was on a tight schedule in L.A. during Academy Awards weekend.

Finally, expect a wave of concert announcements in the coming weeks as the summer music season heats way up. I should have a partial to full list of shows for White River Amphitheater, Tulalip Amphitheatre, Puyallup Fair and Chateau St. Michelle by the first week of April here in The Music Lounge. Don’t spend all your money at Barney’s – you’re going to want to be at some of these concerts, I guarantee! Sting has already announced a special performance with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra on June 6 at White River Amphitheatre.

more indoor productions join the repertoire this spring before the three outdoor Shakespeare productions open in mid-June. The final two indoor stagings open in July to complete the season. SGN will review all of the summer openings in late June.

BILL RAUCH DIRECTS OPENING HAMLET, MODERN DRESS RULES Bill Rauch, the OSF’s latest artistic director (and first openly Gay administrator in the Festival’s history) uses a decidedly modern approach to Shakespeare’s Hamlet – and the concept works, giving Ashland its first of three “gold medals” in this year’s opening lineup.

In his 10 seasons at OSF, Dan Donohue has built a solid fan base. His work in the title role will add another laurel wreath to his acting record.

Rauch whips the lengthy Hamlet into workable shape with a unit set that uses a series of doors and sliding walls to change the scenery. His cast hurries through the plot, speeding from one emotional high to another. It’s a very modern production that seems rooted in the historical past. Electronic surveillance cameras watch the interior of the palace at all times.

Twisted barbed wire circles across the outcroppings of exterior walls. The new king, Claudius, is clearly uncertain of his claim to his late brother’s throne.

Devoted to non-traditional casting, OSF works hard to find ways to incorporate the concept. Here, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, usually classmates of Hamlet’s from college, are now women – daughters of the palace’s nanny and cook, the program (strangely) tells us. They also seem to be involved in a Lesbian relationship. The visiting actors are a troupe of hip-hop musicians, and when they perform their play-withinthe-play, they use a rap routine as their approach. The Ghost of Hamlet’s Father is played by Howie Seago, a world-famous actor from The National Theatre For The Deaf, and he uses American Sign Language for his performance. Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother, is an African American actress, the “color blind” casting concept that started the whole alternative casting cycle. While the number of “non-traditional” approaches threaten to overwhelm the production, it is to Rauch and the production’s credit that the various “modern” touches pull together and work. Purists will complain – Rauch noted that most of OSF’s loyal audience prefers traditional approaches to classic plays, “women’s dresses that touch the floor,” he laughed – but this modern-dress Hamlet is an out-and-out success for a modern audience.

Acting highlights include Jeffrey King as Claudius and Richard Elmore’s touching Polonius (famous for his platitudes, “Never a borrower or a lender be” and “To thine own self be true”). The large cast, heavy with a mixture of strange accents that seem to be very foreign to Denmark (or to Shakespeare), works hard and turns in solid performances. Donohue anchors the production – as Hamlet should. It continues in production in the indoor Bowmer Theatre through October 30.

Daddy a career highlight. Winters spent four seasons at Ashland early in his career, and his return this summer captures a stunning performance that won the audience in his first scene.

Christopher Liam Moore directs a solid production of the first-rate script. He uses a 1974 revision by Williams that includes far more profanity, far more specific homosexual references to Brick’s relationship to his college friend, and far more details about the two men who founded the plantation and later turned it over to Big Daddy – “the two old queens who shared this very room.”

The subtlety of the original 1950s script is favored by many Williams’ fans, but this version works well enough.

Stephanie Beatriz is fine as the sexually frustrated Maggie the Cat. Danforth Comins is solid as Brick, stumbling about on his newly broken ankle, sleeping well away from the predatory Maggie. Winters is outstanding as Big Daddy – he walks away with the production and his character doesn’t even enter until Act Two. Kate Mulligan and Rex Young are memorable as Mae and Cooper, the greedy “Sister Woman” and “Brother Man.” Catherine E. Coulson was an audience favorite as Big Mama, but her heavily padded costume kept nearly self-destructing at the opening performance, which proved to be a major distraction. (Ashland is usually technically smooth, but one door lost its doorknob on the set at the opening of Hamlet and a chair leg was broken at Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. “Live” theater is live, after all.)

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF BRINGS MICHAEL WINTERS BACK TO ASHLAND Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prizewinning Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is the second “gold medal” production for OSF this season. In addition to featuring a top-notch Maggie the Cat and her sexually confused husband, Brick, this production brings Seattle’s Michael Winters back to Ashland for the first time since 1973, making his Big

PRIDE & PREJUDICE DELIGHTS AT OSF, LIBBY APPEL RETURNS There are literally dozens of stage adaptations of Jane Austin’s beloved Pride and Prejudice, and Libby Appel and her crew read at least a dozen established scripts before deciding on a solid version by Joseph Hanreddy and J. R. Sullivan. The original novel, of course, guides the adaptation and the production clarifies the adaptation, so the only question is about the overall result.

I’m happy to report that OSF wins another gold medal for Pride and Prejudice.

Libby Appel, OSF’s former artistic director, returns this summer with another hit.

Her witty direction adds a clear dimension to the fun at hand as Mr. and Mrs. Bennet try to marry off their five daughters in England of 1813. Judith-Marie Bergan is delightful as the pushy Mrs. B. and OSF favorite Mark Murphey details a fine father of the five.

Each individual daughter is well-developed, but it is the overall production that shines.

Appel has all the teacups click on their saucers at the exact split second, all four chandeliers descend at exactly the same moment, every door slams in unison. It is a very artificial approach that works beautifully.

Lengthy scenes of social dance add to the party flavor of the complicated storyline – in short, a production to savor. It runs through October 31 in the indoor Bowmer Theatre.

WELL WINS OVER OPENING AUDIENCES, EXPECT AN OSF HIT Well, an unlikely New York hit in recent years, is Lisa Kron’s rambling take on illness and “wellness.” Noted for her unconventional play structure, in Well, Kron played her own self on stage in New York while her chronically ill mother was brought to life by an elderly actress. In Ashland, OSF actress Terri McMahon tackles the role of Lisa and Dee Maaske, a truly beloved OSF veteran, gets the scene-stealing role of the mother, who insists she is not faking her numerous illnesses. Four supporting actors play the various other characters – many of them delightful.

flection on the script. To many, these short, intermission-less ramblings work as “theater for therapy.” For others, they prove to be unconventional scripts that never cease to delight. OSF has wisely staged the intimate production in the small New Theatre, where it continues through June 18. Knowing Ashland, contemporary audiences will flock to the show and turn it into a sellout.

Jackie Beat has visited the Emerald City before, performing with the popular electroclash band she fronts, Dirty Sanchez, but has never performed her drag show here – until now. “I’ve visited Seattle many times,” Jackie Beat told SGN. “Seattle is great fun and is, of course, the hometown of my rock idols, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.”

Like many a famous drag superstar, the transition from up-and-coming performer to pop-culture diva didn’t happen overnight. The artist who appeared on Comedy Central, VH1 and MTV wasn’t always the Jackie Beat the world has come to know and love. “When I first started performing, I did stand-up comedy in the form of beatnik poetry,” she explained. “I wore all black and made the audience snap their fingers instead of clap. I wanted the most 1960s-sounding name, and I almost chose ‘Amanda Haight’ – spelled like the epicenter of the ‘60s subculture in San Francisco, the Haight/Ashbury. I am so glad that I did not opt for a play-on-words name, and I also appreciate that ‘Jackie’ is a somewhat unisex name.”

These days, Jackie Beat says that living life as a known drag artist is “pretty crazy.”

“Traveling is such a pain in the ass these post-9/11 days, and, sadly, I am not famous enough to demand a first-class ticket! So there I am, a huge superstar – figuratively and literally – crammed into a minuscule coach seat like common trash,” joked Jackie Beat, who travels from coast-to-coast to perform. “I mean, don’t they know who I think I am?”

Jackie Beat has earned the praise of Hollywood for her shows. Comedian Roseanne Barr has called Jackie Beat “the greatest drag queen on earth!”

“I adore Roseanne Barr because she came to see me and, like many celebrities, had a few drinks and loved my show and said, ‘I want to work with you!’ But unlike those other celebrities, she actually called me the next day and made it happen!”

“Touring with her as her opening act was amazing,” she said. “She is very supportive and maternal.”

“I also love Sandra Bernhardt,” Jackie Beat said. “She is the reason I am a performer. She is brilliant and hilarious and poignant and gorgeous and hideous. She redefined what comedy and cabaret singing could be.”

Keeping up with current and popular trends can be tiresome for anyone. Because of travel constraints, Jackie Beat says her TV exposure is limited. Still, every now and then she enjoys watching I Survived But I Should Be Dead on TLC. “It’s so horrible, but when my fat ass is crammed into a tiny seat on a plane, I think about some poor bitch who has been stabbed 37 times and thrown down a ravine,” she joked, “Suddenly, my life ain’t so bad, you know?”

Yes, Jackie Beat’s sense of humor is twisted, but that is why audiences love her. Her one-woman show, Jackie Beat Is a Whole Lotta’ Love ran a record 18 months at NYC’s premiere cabaret, Fez, and she returns every year with her award-winning, standingroom-only Christmas show.

Jackie Beat says she has some advice for the up-and-coming “baby” drag queens: “Shave your eyebrows off, always wear nails, and figure out who you are,” she said.

“In other words, are you the funny girl, the serious diva, or the trashy whore?”

“I am not a big fan of lip synching, but if you are going to do it, then please, for God’s sake, choose a song that the DJ will not play,” said Jackie Beat. “Do not do the biggest hit at the moment. Choose an interesting number that is somewhat unique and obscure and – please – know the motherfucking words!”

Readings make good gifts!

During the challenge, Sahara tried not to focus on the vocals and instead went out on stage to have fun. I told Sahara, with that high note of hers, she knows how to make an entrance! “I felt good about it,” Sahara said. “I thought, oh my God, I’m living. I French-kissed a girl in the audience!”

One element of Sahara’s drag artistry that has always struck me is her use of movement, which makes sense considering Sahara is trained in ballet, jazz and modern dance. I asked her if she considers that her trademark – and got back a hilarious answer.

“My trademark, Bebe, is my beauty!” she said, which had me in hysterics. “After the beauty, people come see the kicks and tricks and comedic timing. Dance is the basis of my show. It’s how I express myself when I’m not at the microphone.”

Sahara is comfortable around a microphone. With a full résumé as a male dancer and model, she uses drag as a way to support herself. “I’m not one to wait tables or cater events,” she explained. “Drag was my side gig.”

A side gig that grew into a career! As a drag performer myself who sings and just released a single (check out my song on YouTube!), I spoke to Sahara about the balance between lip-syncing and live-singing performances, and how both are equal forms of expression. “It’s about my message in that moment,” Sahara said in agreement. “I don’t think there should be a lip-sync versus live singers debate.”

One characteristic I think makes Sahara so successful is her vulnerability. Broadway Divas dazzle at Neighbours

by Shaun Knittel SGN Staff Writer Broadway Divas March 14 Neighbours Nightclub The LGBT community has long had a love affair with Broadway musicals and drag queens. On March 14 at Neighbours Nightclub, the two performance genres met, and the outcome was Broadway Divas, a fabulous drag show to benefit Broadway Cares and Equity Fights AIDS. The sold-out show featured performances by Trojan, Patty O’Furniture, Erin Sprow, Lavage, Roxxi Malone, Fosse K, Black Diamond, Vera, Dolly Madison, GLAMAZONIA, Lily Armani, Ryan, Kate, and Gaysha Starr. The high-velocity entertainment featured everything from the songs of such Broadway favorites as Dreamgirls, Cats, Chicago, and Wicked, to songs by Liza Minnelli, and even tunes from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
