SGN predicts the New event: Latin rockers’ Academy Awards original music packs Chop Suey

With the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards being announced on February 1, it’s fair to say conversations about 2009’s best motion pictures are in the winddown stage after two months of speculation and debate. It’s every cineaste’s favorite annual guessing game, as picki n g t h e nominees is almost a s much fun as trying to figure out the eventual winners. But with the expansion of the Best Picture category from five to 10

possibilities, it’s anyone’s guess what those nominees are going to be. While it’s a given that Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds will be the three favorites, the other seven are – to steal the title from one of the potentials – up in the air. Will Up be the first animated film to be nominated since 1991’s Beauty and the Beast? Can a re-imagined Star Trek boldly go where none of the other entries in the long-running franchise have gone before? Or does The Blind Side tackle a spot in the final 10 and score the picture one final touchdown? These are only a few of the questions sure to be answered Tuesday morning when actress Anne Hathaway joins Academy president Tom Sherak to reveal the major category nominations. Here are some of my thoughts and predictions as to the titles and names the duo are likely announce. BEST PICTURE As stated above, thanks to The Golden Globes, various critics groups and the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG), we now know for sure that James Cameron’s Avatar, Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt see oscars page 32

The festival – the first of its kind in Seattle – was the brainchild of Carlos Caldera, musician and lead singer of Africa Violeta, and featured two other bands and one solo performance for a night of great music entertainment and advocacy for local Latino artists. “I came up with the idea of the festival as a way to introduce Seattle to the local Hispanic rock bands,” Caldera told SGN. “Plus, we know that Seattleites love music, so we brought our music to them.” Rock en espanol, otherwise known as Spanish-language rock music, is an extremely popular genre worldwide. Collectively, the artists sell millions of albums and tour extensively, exporting their special brand of music to the masses. Some of the best-known Latin rock artists include Mana, Juanes, Los Lobos, and Molotov. Caldera said that the four acts –

Gitano, Horacio Alcantar, 3 Dead Whores and Africa Violeta – had to organize, produce, and promote the 2010 Seattle Latin Rock Festival themselves because “there aren’t promoters for Latino rock

bands in Washington.” Caldera’s freshman try paid off, and Chop Suey was packed with fans as well as newcomers to see the bands in

Bridges, and the pouty-lipped Miley Cyrus. Sunday’s main telecast (8 p.m., CBS), a three-hour gala, will only highlight 10 to 12 categories – the remaining awards will be announced in a separate ceremony hours before. Follow me on Twitter (@seattlerocker) for a list of early award-winners. Also, watch MTV and TV Guide for red-carpet arrivals and backstage chatter. Here’s my rundown of 10 categories going into this weekend’s show.

Record of the Year nominees: “Halo” – Beyoncé, “I Gotta Feeling” – The Black Eyed Peas, “Use Somebody” – Kings of Leon, “Poker Face” – Lady GaGa, “You Belong With Me” – Taylor Swift Will win: “Halo” – Watch out for Swift, who could be the big surprise of the night, though I expect Ms. Knowles to edge her out. Should win: “Poker Face” – I still have no idea what this song is really about, but I can’t get it out of my head a whole year after listening to it for the first time.

My love-hate relationship with the Grammy Awards rages on. I’m happy when the nominees are announced, but the list of winners leaves me gagging for months afterward. I’ve come to expect worst-case scenarios from the voters, known simply as The Recording Academy, yet I still hold out hope for a few well-deserved surprises. Regardless of the outcome, “music’s biggest night” on January 31 will feature unique performances by top artists including Lady GaGa, Beyoncé, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Lady Antebellum, Maxwell, and The Black Eyed Peas. Among the presenters lined up to give out the hardware are Norah Jones, Kristen Bell, Adam Lambert, the Jonas Brothers, Josh Duhamel, Carlos Santana, Jeff
