A sweet and bittersweet romantic comedy-drama, the wonderful Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? features a handful of Gay and straight characters in modern Taipei, who are unhappy in their lives and relationships.

Writer/director Arvin Chen may be straight, but he displays a real sensitivity towards his characters.

In a recent Skype interview Chen claimed he is often assumed to be Gay, and joked, “I don’t think making this film helps.”

The filmmaker, who lives in Taipei, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has had Gay friends most of his life, and cited them as one of the reasons he chose to make this film. Chen said he even modeled one of the film’s Queer characters – “down

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer DEVIL’S DUE Now playing Something happened during Samantha (Allison Miller) and Zach Miller’s (Zach Gilford) honeymoon in the Dominican Republic. She’s returned pregnant, and while the two are overjoyed at the news, there’s a lost night the last evening they were there that neither can recall and that’s worrisome enough to mute their collective joy.

Turns out that’s for good reason.

The pregnancy isn’t going entirely as it is supposed to. Samantha’s mood swings are oftentimes violently out of control, while strange happening both inside their house and throughout their immediate neighborhood have Zach noticeably on edge. There’s some sort of conspiracy tracking their every move, its obsession with the baby criminal in nature, maybe more than that, potentially even Satanic.

So, basically, Devil’s Due is the Rosemary’s Baby of the found footage horror genre, but instead of the husband being in on the demonic cabal trying to use his wife as a vessel for Satan’s spawn, he’s the intrepid investigator attempting to put the pieces together before it’s too late. Otherwise, though, Lindsay Devlin’s script follows the

template set forth in Roman Polanski’s 1968 classic and Ira Levin’s best-seller almost to the letter meaning there aren’t a ton of surprises to be found as far as the central mysteries themselves are concerned.

Be that as it may, the movie isn’t half bad.

Devlin’s scenario emphasizes characterbuilding over scares, making Zach and Samantha more three dimensional than normal – a somewhat impressive feat considering the limitations that power this genre.

More, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (V/H/S) do a nice job of shaking things up a little, going The Bay and End of Watch route using whatever sort of cameras are available at any given moment in order to tell their tale. Together, the trio isn’t afraid to slow things down and to take their time, letting events develop slowly and with precision, making the shocks somewhat more effective in the process.

The problem with these Paranormal Activity-style supernatural riffs is that they are starting to follow a discernable pattern and as such the shocks and moments of terror are becoming harder to come by as these sorts of films continue to increase in number. In this case, at a certain point, the inherent silliness of it all overpowers the moderate scares that are indeed found, the last third an increasingly frenetic but decreasingly interesting affair that sadly wears out

Familiar Devil’s Due carries tensions to term

its welcome with frustrating speed.

Still, I can’t say I minded watching Devil’s Due. It has some unsettling moments, not the least of which is a sequence featuring three teens out having a good time, stumbling upon a scene of wildlife carnage they shouldn’t have, and the performances from both Miller and Gilford are pretty good,

all things considered. I like that BettinelliOlpin and Gillett aren’t afraid to slow things down, to put character first and everything else second, allowing the viewer to connect emotionally to what is going on. The movie doesn’t deliver, not at the end at least; but it does carry its tension to term, so that it’s almost good enough to make seeing this baby born moderately worthwhile.

to ever know the depths of their mutual passions, even if all that both want is to be together as often as they can.

Based on the book by Claire Tomalin and adapted by screenwriter Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady), Fiennes’ sophomore directorial outing, The Invisible Woman, shines a light on a bit of history few know a darn thing about. It attempts to showcase Dickens stripped of his fame, showing him as a man with as many flaws and foibles as he has unassailable attributes.

This story does not shy away from his failings, just as it strives to showcase his selfless side, his intelligently witty acumen continually on display even when words, ironically the very things he makes his living stringing together into popular works of literary fiction, begin to fail him.

It is all seen through Nelly/Ellen’s eyes, the young woman looking back at a time in her life full of pain and suffering, yet just as overflowing with friendship, camaraderie and love. When Dickens is unwilling to deal with the stigma associated with either an affair or a divorce from his longtime wife Catherine (Joanna Scanlan), Ellen is put into the dubious position of being made invisible, having to decide whether their being together is worth removing herself from public life virtually altogether.

THE INVISIBLE WOMAN Now playing Nelly Wharton Robinson (Felicity Jones) is not everything she appears to be. The loving wife and inspirational teacher is directing a production of No Thoroughfare: A Drama in Five Acts, a play written by the late Charles Dickens and frequent collaborator Wilkie Collins, for the boys school her husband, George (Tom Burke), is headmaster of. She catches the eye of Reverend William Benham (John Kavanagh), a fellow Dickens enthusiast, and he notices the young woman’s unease whenever the topic of the author and his literary works is broached.

There’s a reason for this.

Once upon a time Nelly Robinson was Ellen Ternan, who at 18 years of age had the good fortune to make Dickens’ (Ralph Fiennes) acquaintance during the rehearsals of a staging of one of Collins’ (Tom Hollander) plays. Ellen, her sisters and her mother Frances (Kristin Scott Thomas) were appearing in that production, and while all are happy to make friends with the author, it is Ellen, the youngest of the Ternans, who has captured his attention. ria Djurkovic (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), the movie is a handsomely constructed enterprise. Fiennes keeps the pace measured and methodical, but the movie itself never feels slow or plodding, everything building with an authentic intimacy that’s completely genuine. Nothing is over the top, histrionics kept to a minimum, even a semi-climactic tragedy treated with methodically reserved respect that fits both the characters as well as the story itself rather beautifully.

As nice as all of this is, and it is rather wonderful, there are still moments where the film itself can’t help but feel like a bigger budgeted British television production than a fully realized theatrical motion picture.

As larger than life as the emotions might be, however, the story itself can seem rather small, Fiennes so intent on maintaining respect and showcasing restraint, he short-circuits pivotal dramatic moments in ways that feel entirely unintentional. There is an inadvertent sabotaging of the climactic twists and turns I found somewhat dispiriting, and as strong as the majority of the film might be, there were times where I almost couldn’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed.

But what ultimately makes the movie an unmitigated success is the presence of Jones. As good as Fiennes is as Dickens, and he’s terrific, none of this would matter in the slightest if the actress at the center of all the dramatics wasn’t up to the challenge. And Jones is, crafting a complicated, delicately intimate portrait of a headstrong, whip-smart young woman faced with choic-

es most of us can hardly fathom, let alone relate to. Yet she puts us right into the sole of Nelly’s shoes, never asking for the viewer’s forgiveness even as her performance delicately aches for their understanding. It’s a mesmerizing portrait, one that continually surprises, everything building towards revelations that can’t help but devastate, Jones delivering it all with a magnetic ease that’s breathtaking.

From a directorial standpoint, Fiennes continues to grow; and as nicely handled as Coriolanus was, this is a more fully realized enterprise in all ways. He has an old school touch that allows the viewer to connect many of the dots for themselves without having the more melodramatic or schmaltzy elements of the story pushed down their throat with an iron first. He likes to let things breathe of their own accord, not over-sentimentalizing elements in order to generate a few unnecessary tears.

The movie can be a bit too prim, a bit too proper, echoing the time period’s moralistic ethos in ways that can seem stilted and obtuse. Yet Fiennes’ eye is a dynamic one, seeing right to the heart of Morgan’s dexterous script with sharply acute meticulousness. When Jones’ stupendous performance is thrown into the mix, The Invisible Woman materializes into greatness, the best of times to be found sifting through its romantic quagmire as gifted author and imprudent admirer look up into one another’s eyes and wonder where this mutual infatuation will lead them. warner brothers

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? concerns Weichung (Richie Jen), a married optometrist, whose wife Feng (Mavis Fan) wants to have a second child. However, at his sister, Mandy’s (Kimi Hsia) engagement party, Weichung reconnects with his old friend Stephen (Lawrence Ko), a Gay man.

The glum Weichung soon finds himself reconsidering his repressed same-sex feelings and questioning his marriage – especially when he meets Thomas (Wong Ka-lok), an adorable flight attendant. Meanwhile, after Mandy breaks off her engagement to SanSan (Stone), San-San enlists Stephen and his Queer friends to help him win his fiancé back.

The core of the film focuses on each character grappling with a pivotal romantic crisis. Chen explained, “Weichung thinks he has moved on from being Gay, but that affects his wife’s story. Does he love her? And what will she do when he can’t love her? His sister is also struggling with commitment and her romance being compromised.”

Rather than become a despairing romantic drama, Chen’s buoyant film uses elements of fantasy, as when the broken-hearted Mandy gets relationship advice from a soap opera actor who visits her in her apartment. The director deliberately subverts the tropes of traditional romantic comedies, which is what distinguishes his film and makes it as charming as it is wistful.

Chen explained, “I try to find humor in situations that are not inherently funny, but also try to find sadness in scenes that are not inherently sad.”

He continued, “These characters live in a boring world, and have mundane jobs, but this film says that fantastical things could happen.”

One such magical realist moment occurs in a pre-credit sequence where Weichung’s boss literally flies away with an umbrella.

Another sequence – Chen’s favorite – has Feng singing the title song in a karaoke bar.

What begins as a solo performance soon turns into a full-blown musical number complete with backup singers. Like many of the scenes in the film, this episode is melancholic, sunny, and fantastic all at the same time.

colorful visuals that are a wink and a nod to 1950s Hollywood melodramas and musicals. The writer/director referenced Todd Haynes’ Far From Heaven as a similarly stylish-looking film. “Heaven is more melodrama, ours is goofy comedy, but the same aesthetic works in this story. The colors, music, and cinematography are much more from this older era.”

As for the Gay characters, Chen shows how Weichung struggles as he tries to conform to societal pressure in Taiwan to be married and have a family. In contrast, the openly Gay Stephen is less concerned about social norms and expectations; he finds a loophole, and marries a Lesbian.

Stephen is the film’s happiest character, and while Ko may come across as a somewhat flamboyant stereotype, Chen observed that he wanted him to be the opposite of the conservative Weichung. “Stephen knows

exactly who he is, and he is completely realized as a person. He has no conflicts.”

He acknowledged that Stephen’s Gay friends, who help the heartbroken SanSan, act as the film’s Shakespearean chorus. Chen said, “Like Stephen, they are above the story, and happy with who they are. They are dispensing advice rather than struggling with their own problems.”

The filmmaker indicated that he did not specifically cast straight or Gay actors for any of the roles. “There are not many openly Gay actors in Asia. We had to worry about straight actors who wouldn’t want to do the film. All the main characters playing Gay are straight, with the exception of one or two supporting roles.”

Chen hopes that Queer audiences will appreciate his film and his characters. He noted that Gay viewers who have seen Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? actually identify

more with Feng because her story is perhaps the most moving. She gives an extra dimension to her husband’s coming out drama.

That said, Weichung’s emotional conflict is handled very respectfully. Chen’s aim was to recapture a kind of adolescent love for the character; how Weichung felt when he first had feelings for a man. The object of his affection, Thomas, functions an attractive and possibly unattainable fantasy character. Still, Thomas makes Weichung literally float in another of the film’s wonderful magical scenes.

Weichung’s storyline in particular, and the film’s lush romantic qualities in general, will resonate with anyone who has sought love or struggled for personal happiness.

We hope that you will look at the list of nominees and/or winners and realize how much great theater is produced in this town.

Maybe you’ll decide to attend one more theatrical production this year than last (which means, if you have never gone, maybe it’s time to give it a try!), and maybe try a theater you might not have been to or heard of until you saw them on these two lists.

A couple of years ago, American Theatre magazine declared that Seattle had more theater per capita than any other city in the United States! We may not have as many people here as in New York City, but we have more theater for the amount of people here! That’s pretty amazing, considering NYC’s synonymousness with theater. A way to remind yourself of just how difficult those years were, as Gay men began dying from mysterious diseases that were, prior to that, almost completely unheard of, and no one knew why or how to keep from getting sick themselves, is to attend a bravura theatrical production by Strawberry Theatre Workshop (www.strawshop.org) at the Erickson Theatre. The author, Larry Kramer, wrote the play as a polemic and a protest in 1985 with detailed information on just how ignored and abused the Gay community felt.

Specifically, in the play, he details a Tylenol scare that happened in the same years.

In 1982, someone put cyanide in some Tylenol capsules and 7 random people died taking them. The National Institute of Health spent millions of dollars on that investigation and our over-the-counter medications were forever repackaged into tamper-proof packaging. But hundreds of Gay men began dying and the governmental response was non-existent! Kramer was a writer and had already tried to write about the crisis. But his voice was small and his frustration was enormous.

Performed originally at The Public Theater in New York City, the play made an impact on New Yorkers. It was a shout of outrage. The play is historic in its content and context, but still has the power to devastate an audience (BRING TISSUES) and educate about what happened. It serves as a wakeup call to all of us to continue to pressure our government to fund cure research and organizations like the Lifelong AIDS Alliance.

People today can “manage” their illnesses, but we are learning, as they age and must

continue to use these expensive and invasive medical treatments for their entire lives, that the drugs themselves are toxic and deteriorating. Soon, we may enter a new phase where older HIV/AIDS patients begin to need intensive medical care due to the medication regimen, itself.

The play details the conflicts in the Gay community of the time. After Stonewall, many Gay people had decided that the way to be accepted and live openly was to celebrate sex and sexuality. Those in California, probably as a kind of off-shoot of the Hippie era, were most often photographed in the chaps and leather look, but it was that kind of behavior that turned off a lot of mainstream America. Still, people who had had to fear everything about being different reveled in the openness and the ability to have multiple sexual partners.

The Normal Heart shows how difficult it was to ask Gay men to stop having sex in order not to die. It took several years to figure out if sex was a transmitting mechanism, and then more time to figure out if there was a way to protect yourself from transmission while being sexually active. It also details how difficult it was for closeted business people to both join Gay organizations and also worry about getting fired from their jobs.

The cast is terrific, from the yeoman effort of Greg Lyle-Newton to demonstrate both Ned Weeks’ (Larry Kramer’s character name for essentially himself) anger, neediness, and activism, to the ensemble support of other Gay characters (Peter Crook as a closeted businessman whose fear is palpable, even as he loses partners, Stephen Black as a New York City health department employee whose activism gets him close to being fired, Andrew Russell as a reporter with enough backbone to be attracted to Ned even as Ned almost sabotages any hope of love), a heartbreaking re-

lationship with Ned’s straight brother (Rob Burgess), and an extra-special performance from Amy Thone as a doctor on the spot to accidentally become a foremost expert on the disease just by proximity.

Director Sheila Daniels creates seamless transitions from a mostly bare stage, and low-key intonations of deaths-by-month during scene changes, as dictated in the script. With emotional excess a constant threat, she helps the actors maintain the tension needed so that the evening has layers of emotions, not just shouting. This production demonstrates her great directing abilities.

There is much more to say about the production, but it has to be summed up as DO NOT MISS THIS PRODUCTION! Justin Timberlake gives fans an unforgettable experience nate gowdy / seattle gay news

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE KEY ARENA January 17 The only thing Justin Timberlake didn’t do last weekend at Key Arena was magic tricks. The mega pop star delivered a near three-hour concert to a sold out audience that included all of his major hits, sharp choreography, dazzling stage and lighting design, lots of interaction with crazed admirers and even a few laughs, like when he politely told a fan to fuck off because he complained about the ten-minute intermission – Timberlake quickly apologized.

After a brief slideshow, displayed on a honeycomb-shaped back panel that extended to form a small roof, the show began with Timberlake standing atop the double-tiered stage singing the opening lines of “Pusher Love Girl.” Within seconds, he made his way to the main platform below and a full band of musicians, complete with brass section and supporting vocalists, rose from beneath the stage. Dressed in a three-piece black suit with polished shoes and neatly groomed hair – his band members and sixperson dance troupe all wearing crisp black and white outfits, too – it set the tone for a concert that had as much class as it did sass.

“Is that how you’re feeling tonight, Seattle?” asked Timberlake to a roaring crowd.

“The 12th Man is in the house tonight!” he added, and the decibel noise inside the arena grew more intense.

“Rock Your Body” put everyone in a party mood, as if they weren’t already. “My Love” was given an elegant piano intro with ballad-like vocals, but then juiced up to a lively rendition that featured Timberlake dancing solo on a short catwalk with dimmed lights.

“TKO,” one of many songs played from the musician-actor’s 2013 dual volume release, The 20/20 Experience: The Complete Experience, packed a mean punch with everyone yelling out “T-K-O” throughout it, while another track from the album, “Strawberry Bubblegum,” was infused with an old school R&B vibe.

“It’s a very big weekend in this city,” said the former N Sync frontman in reference to Sunday’s NFC Championship football game. “Some of them are in the building tonight, so shout out to the Seahawks!” Indeed, several team members attended the performance, including free safety Earl Thomas, wide receiver Golden Tate, kicker Steven Hauscka, defensive end Greg Scruggs and linebackers Bobby Wagner and Heath Farwell.

“Cry Me a River,” with an added snippet of Jay Z’s “Holy Grail,” had the tenderness of a ballad, yet the jolt of a power anthem, with over 17,000 people lending their voices to the chorus. The Grammy-winning tune capped the first half of the show. Yes, there was more.

Following a short intermission, giving fans just enough time to grab a beer or use the restroom, Timberlake re-appeared to commence the second portion that proved to be as long and even more impressive than the previous. It was dominated by 20/20 material, including the initial three numbers, “Only When I Walk Away,” “True Blood” and “Drink You Away,” which the dapper entertainer described simply as a song about drinking.

The coolest moment of the night took place during “Let the Groove In” when the plexiglass walkway on the stage lifted entirely and gradually moved from one end of Key Arena to the other, all the while Timberlake and members of his band and dance

ensemble performed high above the floor without flinching.

Settled on the other side of Key Arena, Timberlake and The Tennessee Kids, as he calls his stage support, reeled off a brief set that featured “That Girl,” “Cabaret” and a couple of covers, Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” and Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature.” Performing to a VIP crowd squeezed inside a makeshift bar, the Memphis native greeted diehard followers with hand-slaps and up close hellos. A cameo sighting by local star Macklemore, who seized the opportunity to snap a selfie of himself with Timberlake, got a loud cheer.

At one point, Timberlake raised a drink to the audience and declared, “Here’s to this weekend. Good luck! To the 12th Man!” Two more covers, fun redos of Kool and the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie” and Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison,” were snuck in towards the finale of the concert. But it was a trio of big hits that took the performance to the midnight hour, literally. An attitude-driven run-through of “Suit & Tie,” followed by a very bouncy version of “SexyBack,” and then a fantastic rendition of “Mirrors” climaxed the lengthy, exciting visit by the pop music giant, who promised his Seattle fan base that he’d return to the Emerald City sooner the next time. He hadn’t been here since 1999, when N Sync’s “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now Tour” rode into town.

Not only was Friday’s concert packed with great music and flawless dance moves, but it was a really impressive showing from a really impressive showman.

Timberlake’s a pro; I was blown away by how skilled he is as a live performer and how well he can work a crowd.

From start to finish, it was epic. There’s no better way to describe it.

FOSTER THE PEOPLE THE CROCODILE January 19 Where in the world did Foster the People go? Well, for the last year, they’ve been nowhere, except holed up in a recording studio putting together a new record. The California pop-rock trio only performed one live show in all of 2013, making Sunday’s concert at The Crocodile their first gig in a long, long time.

But rusty, they weren’t. The three-piece band, joined by less than a handful of support musicians and backup singers, kicked off the 90-minute appearance with “Pseudologia Fantastica,” a track from their forthcoming sophomore release, Supermodel.

Group frontman Mark Foster, who looked fit and striking in an all black denim-tee shirt combo with golden-cropped hair, stretched his bulky arms (someone’s been working out) in the air as white strobe lights flickered behind him. They quickly followed with “Miss You” from 2011’s Torches.

“Well, it’s a good night to be in Seattle,” Foster said with a smile. Many concertgoers were garbed in Seahawks attire, as the Seattle vs. San Francisco NFC Championship had just been completed a few hours earlier. But the crowd scrunched into the intimate venue for this special performance – the first of only two shows before Foster

the People appears at Coachella – didn’t come for a post-game rally; they came to hear their favorite tunes and fresh material by this LA-based act.

They got exactly what they wished for.

“Call It What You Want,” “Waste,” “Life on the Nickel,” “Houdini” and “Helena Beat” found everyone bouncing and punching the air with their fists, while some danced in what little space they had around them.

Things suddenly got very warm on a bitterly cold night. The much-anticipated “Pumped Up Kicks” featured Foster whistling sweetly midway through the number, as a swarm of velvet lights provided a dramatic backdrop.

But the audience responded well to newer stuff, such as “Ask Yourself,” “Nevermind” and “A Beginner’s Guide to Destroying the Moon,” and also “Coming of Age,” the leadoff single from Supermodel. A threesong encore sealed the concert, beginning with an acoustic solo version of “Fire Escape” by Foster and ending with a highly energetic delivery of “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls).”

From my vantage point, I caught limited glimpses of fellow band members Cubbie Fink and Mark Pontius. But from the few viewing opportunities afforded me, they looked cheerful and rather dashing on stage.

Supermodel is set for a March 18 release, and it’s expected that Foster the People will tour nationally this spring or summer.

urday’s benefit recital at Pacific Lutheran University by soprano Angela Meade held multiple moments of ecstasy of the highest intensity I have ever experienced in my 75 years.

The great Birgit Nilsson once answered a question about her voice with, “I was born with freaky things in my throat.” If you’ve ever experienced her singing live, you’ll credit her answer. Very few singers possess voices worthy of it. But Angela Meade is definitely one of those rarities. Her voice is not only huge, but also warm, attractive, and extremely flexible.

But the voice is only one ingredient in the makeup of a great singer. Excellent health is another. But these don’t matter if two other

To which I replied, “Because most sopranos would be scared to death by them!” Indeed, the vocal demands were formidable in every way: range, agility, and dramatic thrust.

Another impressive set of four Meyerbeer songs followed, before the final item on the printed program: “Addio, addio mio dolce amor!” from Puccini’s opera, Edgar. The encore that followed, “Pace, pace mio Dio” from Verdi’s La Forza del destino, ... well, that’s the hardest part to describe. How can one completely lose it and yet describe, even poetically, the waves of ecstasy that ensued.

If you know the aria, it begins with a “messa di voce,” a high note begun very softly,

ingredients are missing: a huge capacity for discipline and hard work, and the musical intelligence to bring it all together. We saw and heard all of this come together with incredible power in this program of mostly German and French art songs, even though Angela began and ended the evening with an operatic aria.

Magda’s aria from Puccini’s opera La Rondine sounded like an easy, simple and lovely tune. It sounded that way until you remembered that that soft, floated high note is a high C! The set of four songs by Giocomo Meyerbeer that followed was a shock.

Who knew Meyerbeer wrote totally engaging art songs; I was familiar only with his sometimes-not-so-engaging operas. These songs also drew our attention to the extraordinary playing of Bradley Moore, Angela’s superb accompanist. For a complete change of color and mood, she then sang four by Bizet. Here especially one noticed the singer’s superb articulation of rhythms and grace notes.

After intermission we heard three vocally operatic and viscerally exciting songs

then slowly swelled to pretty loud, and then slowly diminished to the original soft. The diminuendo should exactly mirror the crescendo, in the opposite direction. (This is part of the “science” of great vocal art.)

Angela did it so perfectly that it set off my ecstasy thing big time! The rest of this great aria was no less impressive in its dramatic power and vocal splendor, concluding with a high B-flat that was the perfect combination of power and beauty. Shaking with excitement and wiping away the tears, my two guests and I could not have handled more and thus welcomed the end of the singing.

Angela, who hails from Centralia, spoke to the audience about the vocal scholarship that this benefit helped fund for her alma mater, PLU. She introduced one of the students, who was set to compete in the Metropolitan Opera regional auditions the next day at Benaroya Hall. The soprano has to know how unique her talents are, but she doesn’t show it in her humble and charming manner.

It’s rare, unpredictable, and intoxicating; I’m not safe to drive until I’ve calmed down a bit afterwards. Otherwise, I think it’s good for your health (like laughter). But where can it be found?

In a sense, my selecting what I’m going to attend and perhaps review is an educated

crapshoot in a search for ecstasy. Not only does the event have to deliver the proper stimuli, but I also must be in a receptive mood. The same recording, for instance, can sometimes work its magic and at other times fall flat. When ecstasy calls, it is always a surprise, even though I have been looking for it, because its power is so overwhelming. At concerts I have had to learn how to sob silently, even if I can’t keep my eyes clear enough to see the whole happening.

Here comes a new drama queen

What a chance for me to pursue my dream, albeit late in life! I am a fifty-niner, once a forty-niner; now all I have to do is “act” on it! There is really no punch line there; I signed up for beginning acting techniques at North Seattle Community College. Yes, I already have myself a Bachelor of English, so why do I want more? Actually, I took a class in playwriting at my alma mater, Seattle University, and got to have one of my plays dramatized. I found it so fascinating being able to mold the actors to my play that the teacher asked me if I was interested in becoming a director! I think I told her “no” at the time! Anyway, all during high school, I would get to the final audition and then someone more seasoned as an actor, would get the part. I did make the chorus of Hello Dolly and had a real blast dancing and supporting the lead, the girl who played, Dolly Levy. I heard she ended up going to Julliard, one of the more famous schools of the arts in New York City.

with a young Oriental boy, who fed me my lines because I did not remember them, I was so scared performing in front of people! Needless to say, I got a low grade on my performance and I vowed to do better the next play around.

We learned dramatic technique in that class; everything from showing a certain thing your character does over and over; and being informed that the space in front of you was known as a wall. We learned to block out the audience, while we concentrated on the wall. Sometimes, the teacher would have each student look at certain landmarks on the wall, having two students at a time doing this. We would have to synchronize where we both looked to assure the teacher and ourselves that we had our “blocking” correct. And for those who wonder what blocking is in dramatic terms, it is how all the stage movements are choreographed to ensure that much more dramatic effect.

I had my best performance then as the mother of the blind boy in Butterflies are Free. To ensure that I would not forget a line, the teacher had the boy who played the blind boy say, “What is it that you want, Mother?” I remembered all my lines during that play and got a respectable grade for my performance! After my performance, the teacher told me that she was so proud of me – how I remembered all my lines!
