JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA Balagan Theatre The Moore Theatre Through January 26 There is soaring singing from glorious voices! However, Jerry Springer the Opera is the most profane operatic production you could EVER conceive of. A friend claimed her head had been broken
upon experiencing this unique mashup of high art and lowest human behaviors. Balagan Theatre is pushing against the edge of propriety here, and some will undoubtedly think they’ve gone over the edge into depravity. American Hustle (l) and 12 Years a Slave received the most nominations
Scoring the bulk of the nominations, the pre-Civil War drama 12 Years a Slave and the ‘70sset ABSCAM-inspired satirical black comedy American Hustle were the two big winners when the 86th annual Academy Award nominees were announced Thursday morning. The two films shared nods for Best Picture, Director (Steve McQueen, David O. Russell), Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Christian Bale), Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender, Bradley Cooper), Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lawrence), Screenplay (Slave for Adapted, Hustle for Original), Editing, Costume Design and Production Design, while Amy Adams was something of a surprise Best Actress nominee giving American Hustle ten nominations to nine for 12 Years a Slave. by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer When a yellow feathery Manila Luzon bested Delta Work in a televised lip-sync battle to Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park,” it created a timeless moment that female impersonator aficionados still revisit for sheer delight. The Minnesota-born entertainer went on to place second in RuPaul’s Drag Race – Season Three, then reappeared on the Logo TV network’s All-Star competition, where she was knocked out in the third round. But the exposure undoubtedly made her a star on the national drag circuit, booked routinely for Pride festivities and themed cruise ship adventures across the country, and even in Canada.
