“I got into this business to do one thing: make people laugh,” Lily told SGN. “If you can’t laugh at a 28-year-old dude that dresses up like a 46-year-old M.I.L.F., you shouldn’t be allowed out on the streets of Seattle after dark!” unTucked centers around Lily’s “muses from the bottle.” The host, with bottle of beer or cocktail in hand, banters with the audience about all things Lily, from wacky observations to pure hilarity, and performs spot-on celebrity mimics and original characters. Preachy Book of Eli a disappointment

Tuesdays at 10 PM R Place Lady Chablis is looking for a few good men. Whether you’re the boy who thinks he is starring in his own Lady GaGa music video every time you go to the club or the guy who just can’t seem to keep his shirt on, Lady Chablis has got what you need: “So You Think You Can Drag?” and “Seattle’s Next Top Go-Go Boy” contests at R Place.

Every Tuesday night, the two contests take place at the popular Capitol Hill bar. The rules are simple: Show up, bring friends, and enter to win. There’s just one catch: You gotta work it! The winner is chosen based on audience response.

If you “think you can drag,” Chablis will assign one of her queens from “Lashes Cabaret” to perform a miracle: a 30-minute makeover where you will be transformed with makeup, wigs, and wardrobe. In other words, walk in a man, walk out a woman.

For you exhibitionists out there, the go-

go boy contest is calling your name. Strip down to your best designer briefs and show the crowd your moves while the drag contestants lip synch their way to a tiara. A cash prize is awarded to the best go-go boy of the night.

The new Tuesday-night party had its kickoff show on January 12. The weekly competitions are building blocks which will culminate in a finals show, where the best new drag artists and the hottest local go-go boys will battle for domination. Eventually, the winning drag contestant will join Lady Chablis and her girls in “Lashes Cabaret” Friday and Saturday nights at R Place. The winning go-go boy will join the hot cast of go-go boys already on staff at the nightclub.

“So You Think You Can Drag?” and “Seattle’s Next Top Go-Go Boy” contests are a great way to spend a Tuesday night. The show begins at 10 p.m. and there’s a weekly two-for-one Tuesday drink special. Sixth Bowiemas celebration a glam rock triumph

and a completely packed dance floor, Bowiemas was a night of drag, Bowie impersonators, and wonderfully excessive makeup.

“It’s kind of a mock Christmas for David, a once-a-year holiday to celebrate the lord and savior David Bowie. You get festive and glamorous and dance all night,” said Rose O’Kane, primary promoter and co-creator of the event.

Although the spelling of Bowiemas has changed over the years, it still remains the festive celebration it was since its inception. During its first three years, Bowiemas was still just a sprouting house party.

For its fourth and fifth years, it was held in real venues, at the Warehouse and the Holy Mountain, respectively, but the party was still finding its niche.

Last year, the Holy Mountain saw a 500-person Bowiemas. “People weren’t dressed up, and didn’t really like listing to David Bowie,” O’Kane told SGN. Now, in its sixth year, the event has blossomed into a wonderful celebration of community. It’s large enough to get crazy, yet still attached to its intimate roots, with a ticket cap of 200.

“Having a set limit made the party much more enjoyable,” O’Kane said.

“It’s the first year in two years that we’ve had Bowiemas go past 12:30 or 1. In the past, it’s gotten really rowdy and had to be shut down,” said O’Kane.

The cops did show up around 1:30 a.m., apparently because of a noise complaint. “The Warehouse has a really good friendship with the cops,” said O’Kane, “so we turned the music down and they left.”

This was the first Bowiemas held on Bowie’s actual birthday, January 8, and the first year the party had its own bar, sponsored completely by partygoer Mark Koziorowski,

who appeared at the event in an unforgettable Iggy Pop wig.

Altogether, the event was much more organized than in previous years. “We had a really good team,” O’Kane told SGN. O’Kane and friend Lyle Rose were, as O’Kane described, “the two head honchos.” She went on to list off the many names of those that helped with the setup and planning of the party. “Last year, I got an ulcer because of how stressful it was.

I’m so grateful to everyone this year,” O’Kane said.

O’Kane, Rose, and drag chanteuse Phoebe Fondue served as the emcees of the party. At 12:00 a.m., the music was turned down and Rose led a midnight mass in honor of Bowie.

The story of the midnight mass begins the year before the first Bowiemas, while O’Kane was still in high school. “I had just discovered Bowie over the summer,” O’Kane explained. “That year, me and Elaine [Jenkins, the other co-creator of Bowiemas] both totally geeked out on Bowie and listened to him all the time. We were in a world religions class together and we had to come up with our own religion and holiday. So we came up with Bowieism and created Bowiemas.”

Bowieism is the belief that Bowie is a god. The idea is basically that the world will go through times that it will be sexually and ideologically repressive. When the need for a sexual revolution becomes apparent, Bowie will come to earth in human form and create and lead such a revolution.

The idea being that the glam rock revolution was the most recent appearance of this heavenly entity that has come to be known, at least in this lifetime, as David Bowie.

Bowieism also has many other customs and beliefs, which O’Kane and Jenkins wrote down together in high school. This original “Bowie bible” still exists today. “If you die a Bowieist, you go to heaven and become a part of his massive sexual aura,” added O’Kane, laughing. “[Bowieism] was basically just me and Elaine talking about how hot David Bowie is and how he’s like a god.”

Next year’s Bowiemas is already in the works in its earliest stages. O’Kane and Rose plan to have the party at the Warehouse, and they’re already coming up with fundraising ideas.

“It’s become the holiday that is the most meaningful to me,” said O’Kane. “It’s nice to see people coming together to build it, and to celebrate it. It’s nice to have that community, even if just for a little while.”

Celebrating 37 Years!

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Electra Seattle Shakespeare Company Through January 31 Frank McGuinness’ adaptation of Sophocles’ tragedy of the famous Greek myth Electra is a fast-moving story told in real time. A striking element of the play is that its characters are mostly women, and while each woman is neither all villain nor all saint, each of the main characters’ motives can be clearly understood.

Clytemnestra (Ellen Boyle) conspired with her lover Aegistus (John Bogar) to kill her husband, Agamemnon. We learn that she did this as retribution for Agamemnon’s years-ago killing of their youngest daughter, and that she has harbored hatred for him since then. Agamemnon’s oldest daughter, Electra (Marya Sea Kaminski), saved her tiny brother Orestes (Darragh Kennan), sent him with a loyal servant (Todd Jefferson Moore) into exile, and has waited years for him to return and avenge the murder of her father and take back the kingdom.

The middle sister, Chrysothemis (Susannah Millonzi), has tried to stay in the background, seeming to accept her mother’s domination. She’s the one that doesn’t think rocking the boat is a good idea. Electra, on the other hand, has challenged her mother and made her grief plain to everyone. The two sisters have a heated, evenhanded argument over which is the correct way to live, with both points clearly hav-

ing advantages and disadvantages. Chrysothemis successfully manages to maintain a dignity in quiet watchfulness, rather than become a cowed and subjugated failure. We feel for Electra in her grief, but also wonder if there isn’t a better way to manage her life.

Her scene with Kennan’s Orestes, as she first mourns him as dead and then discovers him alive, is fraught with quivering audience tension, since we are introduced to the alive-and-well Orestes right at the start.

The loyal servant’s fictional tale of Orestes’ death during a tournament shows Moore’s great story-telling talent.

Directed tautly by Sheila Daniels, this 90-minute production captures and holds attention through every breathless minute.

Kaminski, a great dramatic talent, mourns with powerful energy, but also with able restraint, so that tension builds and ebbs.

Kaminski has a significant exchange with Boyle as her mother, and both women dominate the stage in completely different ways.

It’s a heady moment.

The Greek chorus in this production is an almost-modern group of female friends who support, cajole, mourn and warn Electra throughout the performance. Led by Susanna Burney, Ellen Elizabeth Steves and Jessie Underhill provide continuity and clarity, rather than getting in the way, as the chorus tends to do in lesser adaptations. Orestes is supported by the understated Tim SmithStewart.

Daniels has a particular affinity for the grand and the ritualistic, yet she mixes in modernistic elements like Andrea Bryn Bush’s set, including masses of chain link fence, to metaphorically display Electra’s

trapped existence. Lighting designer Andrew D. Smith and sound designer Robertson Witmer create minimalistic and subtle visual and auditory changes. Witmer’s sense of sound augmentation is particularly acute in this production.

Ritualistic movement and sacrifices of colored sand are key punctuations, emphasizing universal human emotions.

There’s no real need to warn about keeping youngsters away from (offstage) violence, but there’s plenty of blood to go around.

At the January 9 presentation of 14/48 the theme for the evening was “The Life You Knew” and the overall grade for that performances was a solid A-.

The Guitar Case,

by Maggie Lee, was a cute takeoff on the “gun in a guitar case” stereotype, though the case was carried by a hitwoman who found herself befriended by a likable drifter who carried his own banjo case with everything he owned in it.

Jeff Becomes Her by Celene Ramadan was a hysterical family reunion at a funeral where one brother has become their sister. It was excellently realistic, as Lisa Viertel played the MTF with aplomb.

Eggs of Green by Scot Augustson reflects Augustson’s truly unique creative mind, as two guys bond over whether they liked childhood book characters such as Babar the elephant and Curious George. Their description of the Man in the Yellow Hat as a pedophile was particularly memorable.

Sticky Monkeyflower by Elizabeth Heffron pits a pot-smoking ‘70s hot-tubbing family against a military-style horse camp

next door. Charles Smith gave folks a quick eyeful as he adjusted his towel coming out of the tub.

Act II led off with Expecting Bobby (or Nicole) by Joy McCullough-Caranza. This was a fully fleshed-out concept of a pregnant couple who imagine whether or not they are ready to deal with all stages of childhood, like diaper-changing, or having a teen who hates them. Kudos to director Tyrone Brown and actors Morgan Rowe, Troy Fischnaller, and baby/kid/ teen Jacob Sidney.

The piece was as welldone as any rehearsed 10-minute play festival piece.

Deep Memory by Dawson Nichols was a funny take on past-life hypnosis, accompanied by actors who demonstrated what was seen in dream-state, until they all got sick of it and bolted the play. Particularly absurd was the “past lives” memory of being Hilary Clinton.

We’re Not Talking by Paul Mullin was a sweet musing on relationships. It was not supposed to be funny, which is risky and quite rare at these events. HD Met Broadcast of Der Rosenkavalier Mercy and the gang had fun working over the broadcast of Der Rosenkavalier. Loyalty pointed out that Susan Graham was too old to be the 16-year-old servant boyfriend, especially since she and Renée Fleming acknowledged in the onstage interview that they’d been singing together for 20 years.

Cuteness thought Graham had rings under her eyes, but they all agreed the comfort the two women had together in bed was pleasing to watch. Cuteness pondered whether Strauss’ attraction to cross-dressing women may have come from him being one of the girls himself. At the very least, Strauss clearly loved female voices.

The singing was magnificent. Christine Schäfer and Kristinn Sigmundsson completed the cast with big satisfying voices.

Camille Bloom Mercy just heard that Camille Bloom’s song “This World” has been chosen to be licensed to eight different shows on MTV, Oxygen Network, and E! Television. Bloom is one of the singers Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed a lot at the Laughing Ladies Café Women’s Music Festival. Camille acknowledges that she doesn’t even have a TV. This is a great opportunity for exposure.

Tower of Power Mercy is very excited that Tower of Power is coming to Jazz Alley on January 28-31.

The show celebrates the release, after 40 years together, of a new album, The Great American Soulbook, which shows the band “Bump City-izing” many of their favorite soul songs, originally recorded by James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Melding jazz, funk, rock and soul in a way no group ever has, the 10-piece outfit is, according to the Hollywood Reporter, “tighter than a clenched fist.”

The California Music Association gave Tower of Power a Lifetime Achievement Award and cited their 2003 Sony Legacy anthology Havin’ Fun as soul/R&B album of the year.

Byzantine Christmas music haunting and austere Pearl Django

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Pearl Django Mercy and Cuteness ate up Pearl Django’s performance at Jazz Alley last week. As Cuteness said, it is music that just makes her happy.

The band members – Michael Gray on violin, Neil Andersson and Ryan Hoffman on guitar, Rick Leppanen on bass, and David Lange on accordion – shone with their love for their music. Guest guitarist Larry Coryell, with his thick white hair, was also excellent. It was an evening of one musician after another setting the bar higher for quick exchanges of solo improvisation. At one point, David Lange just laughed because he knew he was beaten – but only for a moment.

Michael Gary’s violin work was elegant.

Larry Coryell’s fingers on his guitar looked sure and strong. David Lange’s accordion sang. Rick Leppanen’s bass rocked. Neil Andersson’s guitar was hot. Ryan Hoffman’s guitar had luscious moments. The whole band was delightfully in synch, reflecting their 15 years playing together.

Coryell joked that the reason the band is so good is because they live in Seattle, where it rains so much that there isn’t much to do besides practice.

The band opened with a version of “Avalon” so upbeat Michael Gray joked afterward, “And now we are going to play something really fast.” Mercy liked Coryell dedicating “Our Love is Here to Stay” to his wife, Tracy. The guitarist knocked the audience out with his “derangement” of Ravel’s “Bolero” with a raga feeling, recognizing the Indian influences on the gypsy music of Django Rheinhart and Stephan Grapelli.

Other high points were “Besame Mucho,” “Lady Be Good,” “Minor Swing,” and “Tune for Stephen and Django.”

Jessica Williams Mercy and her friend Assonance were thrilled by Jessica Williams’ performance at the Triple Door last week. The concert was being recorded for a new album, so it included a lot of fresh material. There were points were the musician forgot a tune and acknowledged that the only solution was to start again. Assonance thought the fact that she was recording made Williams nervous, but that she forgot that at some points, and became more at ease.

The pianist started the evening saying, “I never know where it is going to go, so, blast off.” Mercy loved where they ended up. The pianist’s confident fingers took the audience through “I Love You Porgy” and “Dear John,” which Williams dedicated to John Coltrane.

She introduced “Gail’s Song” by saying it was a new song she just can’t stop playing. Mercy could see why, with its soothing opening and exquisite increases of intensity before falling back to almost silence. She continued with the aptly titled “Enchanted Mood.”

Mingus’ “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Theme for Lester Young” was incredible. The tune Williams wrote for Dexter Gordon taking off on his “Foolish Things,” called “Simple Things,” was delightfully funky. She followed with another luscious original, “Mi Solamente.”

“The Mingus Among Us” was a nice song by Williams dedicated to Mingus. Her “Tune for Rosa Parks” was fine and contemplative. “Wise One” took us on a journey.

She closed her set with “I Cover the Waterfront,” which she said was older than all the people in the room. Williams closed with something that old to balance off all the very new material.

The service, by the way, was flawless. As Assonance said, “Just the right amount of

The result was the chorus’ expert performances, strongly felt yet not showy, sober yet approaching the sublime, indeed reflected the majesty of the church in its austere beauty. Taking in this music, I was left to consider the Byzantine-styled mosaics that adorn St. Demetrios Church – beautiful, gold representations of Jesus and the apostles, yet exalted in a way that belie their human features. The art clearly reflected the music – golden representations of Jesus and the apostles – distant, richly decorated, reflecting the divine and not a mirror of our human existence.

Rod’s comments: I share all of Adam’s sentiments, and will add just a few of my own. I too noticed that the music, which sounded at first confusing and even a little monotonous, became more apparently varied and interesting as our ears became accustomed to the musical language. Historically, that language became the major source of our own western musical norms, but in this early eastern form was strikingly different from what our “modern” ears expect.

For instance, many micro-tones, placing the pitch intentionally somewhere between the notes of our western scale, sounded at first downright wrong. Soon they became instead actually expressive of feeling behind the text.

Another difference was the way of approaching from below the initial notes of a phrase, rather like the Italian operatic custom of a slight scoop up to a note; but here the effect was different and quite elegant.

When used at the beginning of a song, it reminded me of the way a bagpiper pumps up to his drone note before piping a melody.

Another effect of these variances of pitch was a kind of freedom, giving an unusual emphasis to the text, making it ultimately more like speech. This additional directness of expression was at times both exotic and startlingly intimate.

On the one hand, this group of men, singing with an extremely masculine tone (lots of body and buzzing overtones), could be seen as a group of ascetic monks singing religious texts. Paradoxically, the passionate intensity with which they sang, combined with the exotic nature of this unfamiliar music, had at times an almost erotic feel. To ears that gradually opened to unaccustomed harmonies and pitches, it was anything but dull.

A Byzantine Christmas with Cappella Romana January 9 St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church Notes by guest reviewer Adam Ross: Attending a concert of music that one knows virtually nothing about is always a challenge; the ear listens, but doesn’t necessarily know how to interpret and understand what it is hearing. Taking in two hours of Byzantine chant celebrating Christmas and Theophany, expertly performed by Portland’s Cappella Romana and led by guest conductor and vocalist Dr. Achilleas Chaldeakis, I found myself enjoying the exotic yet plaintive sounds of the melodies sung in Greek, but at first I was left a little lost as I tried to make sense of the music.

The composers ranged all the way from the 13th century (St. Ioannis Koukouzelis, c.1280-1360), through the 18th (Petros Lampadarios, c.1730-1778 and Petros Bereketis fl.1680-1715), to the 20th (Gregorios Stathis, b.1939).

Chaldeakis sang along with six other vocalists (some of whom occasionally singing solo) and a “backup group” of four men singing a drone (“isokrates”) which occasionally changed harmonics to impart new colors to the piece. The men sang austere, haunting melodies that gained power simply through their length and sober gravity. Nevertheless, as the evening went on, I started to hear patterns, differences between pieces, and settle into the musical language. At one point, Rod and I found ourselves astonished that we shared the same thought, using the same word – the music had suddenly sounded even slightly “jaunty”!

I also found that the music’s very restraint – austere melodies sung in largely a narrow vocal range – had a certain power, which often became overwhelming when the choir or the music stepped out of this range.

Crescendos overwhelmed the senses, and gradual changes of pitch where the melody gradually transposed upward also overtook one’s ears, even if the melodies themselves maintained a certain emotional reserve. In the program notes, the group explained their work to interpret ancient texts that gave only the barest details of performance practice of chanting Byzantine liturgical music.

Ticketholders, do you still feel special? Yep, I know it hurts, but cheer up, because the group, led by the neverunattractive Jon Bon Jovi, will motor through their 27year resumé of hits for what’s expected to be two amazing shows on April 19 and 20, both soldout according to the group’s website. The New Jersey-bred act is one of rock’s most successful bands with a long list of favorites, including “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “Blaze of Glory,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “It’s My Life,” and “You Give Love a Bad Name.”

Emo band Dashboard Confessional, fronted by the sexy and well-tatted Chris Carrabba, is the supporting act for both concerts. Mullets welcome, but so not necessary. was nearly an hour and 20 minutes. I felt the additional material weakened the overall effect.

That great artists can sometimes get better and more intense as they enter their 80s (Toscanini, Walter, Janacek, and Monet, to name a few) has always fascinated me.

While I wouldn’t put Kurt Masur in the same league, his Bruckner was supremely virile, lacking absolutely nothing in power and sweep. Long may he conduct!

Eric Andrews-Katz: How did you get started on an acting career?

Elizabeth Stanley: I grew up in Quincy, Illinois, about 30 miles away from an active theater and my artistic exposure started when I saw Annie. As a kid, I liked dancing around and stuff, but it wasn’t until high school that I gave thought about wanting to do this. I’d thought about teaching, traveling with the Peace Corps, and maybe doing missionary work.

Andrews-Katz: Your Broadway debut was Company, directed by John Doyle.

What instrument did you play and what challenges did you face playing and acting simultaneously?

Stanley: I played the tuba, the oboe and the alto sax. I loved the challenges, but it was one of the hardest things to do everything all at once. It was difficult to put the show on its feet and do the staging if you were playing the instruments.

Andrews-Katz: Your next Broadway show was John Waters’ Crybaby. What was it like to be part of something from the “concept point” to final production?

Stanley: I learned so much and will forever be grateful for that experience. Unless you’ve been through it, you can’t believe how much blood, sweat and tears goes into shaping something new. There are challenges and triumphs and it’s so important to have everyone aligned with a singular vision. It can be an extremely rewarding experience.

Andrews-Katz: What are the major differences between working on a Sondheim production and a John Waters’ musical?

Stanley: I think of it more in terms of a new piece versus a revival. With anything

by John Waters, there is, perhaps, a different kind of expectation. He has a vision of how it should be and his fans have a very specific expectation of what they want to see.

Andrews-Katz: When you auditioned for Xanadu, were you familiar with the 1980s camp film?

Stanley: I was not. I saw the Broadway production before I ever saw the movie.

Andrews-Katz: Were you a roller skater before you auditioned for Xanadu?

Stanley: No. I had never skated before in my lifetime. It wasn’t something that I ever thought I’d be good at (or ever enjoy).

I fell when I was 7 years old and sprained my wrist and so never bothered. When I auditioned, I thought, “Well, if they are OK with me not skating, then they knew what they were getting.” Their attitude was more, “When you’re more comfortable, then we’ll move into skating.” I never felt any pressure that I had to master something that I wasn’t good at right away.

Andrews-Katz: On Broadway, Cheyenne Jackson took over the lead role during previews when a roller skating accident occurred. Have there been any incidents since you joined the cast?

Stanley: When we first started a year ago, one of our skaters had a knee injury and had to leave the show. No one has been severely injured – knock on wood. We [the cast] will continue to accept all positive thoughts and energy out there to prevent it, though. My character is the only one on skates the entire show, so that takes down the danger level.

I’m the only person to watch out for.

Andrews-Katz: What changes, if any, from the original film have been made for the stage production?

Stanley: Lots. The soundtrack stays the same, but the story has been beefed up.

There’s not much of a plot in the movie, but our version has a storyline (albeit a fluffy one). The play’s author, Douglas Carter Beane, has woven in tons of ‘80s lingo and pop culture references. He’s also added in many references to Greek mythology. He kept the general idea of the film and transferred it. Unlike other movie musicals that have been redefined on Broadway, this show gives the audience a giant wink from the cast; it’s all tongue-in-cheek.

Andrews-Katz: Do you find it easier or more challenging to do a stage production that is based on a previously seen film as opposed to new pieces?

Stanley: I don’t know if one is easier than the other. As an artist, I’m really inspired by

pieces that are brand-new. I think that’s the most exciting thing to be part of. That being said, I think people are willing to be reinspired by a previous book or movie and audiences love to see something with which they are already familiar. It’s a great potion, combining something familiar and something original for the finished product.

Andrews-Katz: Since you are an inspirational muse in Xanadu, what inspires you?

Stanley: That’s a deep question for such a fluffy show. So many things inspire me.

Strong relationships with family and friends are really lucky and beautiful things to be cherished. The show says that to create art and love is the definition of Xanadu.

Andrews-Katz: What is your definition of the word “Xanadu”?

Stanley: I think it’s in the way each of us defines it. If you get to do what you love and share it with others, that’s the greatest gift.

Andrews-Katz: What would you like to do next?

Stanley: I like to keep the idea of doing film and television on my radar. I love Broadway, and if they ever brought it back, I’d love to do Evita.

Xanadu started as an unofficial remake of Rita Hayworth’s Down to Earth (1947), which was an unofficial sequel to Gene Kelly’s Cover Girl (1944). The 1980s film extravaganza starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly, and featured the music of the Electric Light Orchestra. Reinvented for the Broadway stage in 2007, Xanadu ran for over 500 performances and was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The blonde 20-something’s leadoff single “Tik Tok” has held Billboard’s #1 singles position for several weeks, going back to December ‘09, and the remaining tracks on her disc read like a dorm kegger gone totally right – how else to explain “Hungover,” “Party at a Rich Dude’s House,” “Take It Off,” and “Boots & Boys” (dahling, welcome to a Gay boy’s ordinary weekend). Efforts are underway to get an interview with Ke$ha here in The Music Lounge. Though the list of magazines and newspapers wanting to speak to her goes on for miles and miles, I’ve got plenty of good karma from all those nice barista tips coming my way, so stay glued for a positive update.

Of the many nerdy musicians I have a crush on, the only redhead of the bunch is Britt Daniel of Spoon – tall, skinny, pale, and slightly goofy does it for me every time.

Daniel and company are set to release their latest album, Transference, on January 19, an anticipated follow-up to 2007’s stellar Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, one of my picks for the best albums of the 2000s. The band, said to have relocated to Portland from Austin, just announced back-to-back upcoming shows in Seattle, April 9 and 10 at the Moore Theatre. Tickets, priced reasonably at $27.50, are on sale now at www.tickets.com or at the Paramount or Moore kiosks (located by the front entrances of each venue). “I would go absolutely insane if it were the same song and dance week after week, show after show,” she said. “I’m more of the fly by the seat of my pantyhose kind of gal! I thrive on the spontaneity and ad-lib with the audience.”

Lily first debuted the show at Rendezvous’ Jewel Box Theater in October 2006. Over the years, Lily and her crew – whom she affectionately refers to as Team Armani – continued to improve and build the show for three years. The show was produced once a month and grew in popularity as word quickly spread that Lily Armani: unTucked was not to be missed. In October 2009, she decided to perform the show weekly and bring it back to the Hill, by making Neighbours its new home.

“The show’s relationship with Neighbours is new, fresh, exciting and absolutely divine,” Lily told SGN. “Steve Tracy, the general manager, and his staff have been nothing short of wonderful to me, my team, and our audience. I’m honored to have the opportunity to imprint our show in the extraordinary history of Neighbours.”

Lily says the Neighbours crew is working tirelessly to strengthen the bond and trust between the LGBT community and the venue, and “they are doing a terrific job.”

Lily Armani is no stranger to the stage or the art of drag performance. For nearly 10 years, she has entertained audiences from coast to coast. For seven of those years, Lily has called Seattle home. She is a consummate storyteller, stand-up comedian, pageant queen, and host. She is a diva filled with class and sass, referring to herself as “the last of the ‘Big-Shouldered Broads.’”

The resurgence of interest in drag performances is something that Lily and her counterparts have taken notice of. “When I moved here over seven years ago, drag was, for the most part, non-existent,” Lily recalled. “We have worked really hard to get to where we are now. I have been fortunate to be a part of the resurgence of this beautiful art form and I absolutely love what I do. I am a huge fan of the art. I like to see it done, and done well.”

explained war, and both feature protagonists on cross-country journeys that have a profound effect on their respective lives. But where The Road is a dark, depressing and deeply melancholic saga of sacrifice in the face of unavoidable annihilation, The Book of Eli is a tale of redemption trying desperately to be both a thrilling large-scale epic as well as a treatise on faith and forgiveness.

The thing is, neither movie is ultimately all that successful; both having major issues that make enjoying them difficult. But while my concerns regarding The Road had more to do with my familiarity with the stunning Cormac McCarthy novel on which it’s based, my problems with the Hughes brothers’ latest have more to do with their picture’s pacing and tone. For all the talk of its surprise conclusion (a conclusion I personally had figured out early on), writer Gary Whitta’s screenplay is surprisingly threadbare. There is very little in the way of meat on this picture’s bones, and while I appreciated its points of view, I didn’t particularly enjoy being beaten over the head by them.

That is exactly what the directors do, however, and the film turns into a deeply religious polemic that felt like a highly didactic sermon that refused to end. The Hughes want to have their cake and eat it, too, delivering eye-popping action set pieces filled with blood and gore while putting forth Christian philosophies that directly oppose much of the narrative they are surrounded by. Worse, the pair pace things like a funeral march, giving everything so much pomp and circumstance that when the ultimate revelation came, I felt so pummeled it was frustratingly difficult to care.

There is still much to applaud. The cast is universally solid, especially an underutilized Jennifer Beals who makes an indelible impression as Solara’s mother and Carnegie’s paramour Claudia. Her character is so beautifully written, so multifaceted and hauntingly tragic, I found that I was drawn to her each time the story turned back her way. Beals – an actress I’ve never particularly cared for – doesn’t just rise to the occasion but pole vaults right over it, and only three weeks into a new year I can already say her performance is one I’m going to remember and cherish all the way into December.

As for the film’s look, while the washedout monochromatic photography isn’t original, that doesn’t make it any less terrific. From a purely visual aesthetic, Don Burgess’ (Enchanted) cinematography and Gae Buckley’s (He’s Just Not That Into You) production design are sensational. Combine their work with Atticus Ross’ (New York, I Love You) ethereal score, and the effect is utterly hypnotic.

It should be pointed out that Albert and Allen do not make bad movies, but other than their 1993 debut Menace II Society, they just don’t seem to be able to make complete ones. Their scripts always seem like they are only halfway there, not as fully formed or as completely fleshed-out as they should be. Yet they are always well-acted, beautifully photographed, and filled with indelible moments. They are intriguing and fascinatingly imperfect curio pieces, movies you sit in the theater longing to be better than they sadly are.

That is the case with The Book of Eli. I never wanted to leave my seat, never felt the inclination to be anywhere else other than where I was. All the same, I kept hoping and praying the film would do something to make my being there feel more than just passably tolerable. I wanted it to wow me, to show me things that took my breath away while giving me a story worthy of approval. But this never happened. For all the Hughes’ efforts, in the end, disappointment was the only thing the pair was able to get out of me.
