Justin Timberlake January 17 Key Arena Be honest. Did you have any idea Justin Timberlake would break away from supergroup N’Sync to become an international star, in both music and film? Well, I did. Probably not the film part, but there was something about the Memphis-born performer that truly separated him from the other guys in the boy band, that enjoyed a successful six-year run from the mid-90s through the early 2000s with multiple chart-topping hits, major TV appearances, award
nominations and multi-platinum selling albums. But that was only the beginning for Timberlake. In 2002, the release of his debut CD Justified officially launched his solo career with a string of smash singles, including “Like I Love You,” “Rock Your Body” and “Cry Me a River,” which earned JT (as he’s also referred to) his first of two Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance; Justified scooped up the gramophone for Best Pop Vocal that same year. Washington Ensemble Theatre inaugurated 2014 with a one-night show: COCKTales with Keira McDonald. Keira is an accomplished solo performer and she mentored almost all of the performers in this
night of solo pieces. They ran the gamut from funny to exploringthe-soul, and most were very personal stories. Many included aspects of growing up Gay, probably because those kinds of personal experiences lend themselves to very evocative theatrical presentations.
The nominations for the 86th annual Academy Awards will be announced this coming Thursday, January 16, and it goes without saying Steve McQueen’s slavery drama 12 Years a Slave and Alfonso Cuarón’s interstellar survivalist sci-fi smash Gravity will be the two frontrunners. They’re likely to snatch up a gigantic batch of the nominations, and as of right now, one can’t help but imagine come the night of March 2 itself, they’ll be the pair taking home the bulk
