For over 25 years, Neighbours nightclub has been a stable establishment of the Seattle LGBT community. What’s more, their stage has launched the careers of some of Seattle’s biggest drag names. From the Court of Seattle to the newest up-and-coming drag sensation, Neighbours has been there to provide the lights, sounds, and support. Nearly 17 years ago, Seattle got its first look at Gaysha Starr. After paying her dues, winning a slew of drag titles and hosting more shows than Dick Clark, Gaysha Starr is back hosting the Legendary Lip Sync Contest, Wednesday night at Neighbours.

“The contest is a great excuse to go out on a Wednesday night to see some new faces and familiar friends,” Gaysha told SGN. “The drag queens love an audience so every week we promise to give you our very, very best!”

Bridges makes Crazy Heart sing

out playing Dr. Parnassus’ right hand man and voice of reason. I also really enjoyed Waits’ devilish bad guy, and although he didn’t do much every time he showed up I discovered I couldn’t quite take my eyes off of him.

As for Ledger, his work shows once again how great a talent we sadly lost. I may not have been a total fan of the character but that doesn’t mean I still wasn’t impressed with just how fully the actor threw himself into the part. He runs the gamut of emotions, sprinting out of the box with hyperactive exuberance only to slow back down into brotherly tenderness whenever the situation calls for it. Ledger is, in a word, wonderful, and I can’t help but wonder what this film would have looked like had he been able to finish it.

Having Depp, Law and Farrell step in for him inside the Imaginarium works much better than I had anticipated, but like

I said before I’m not quite sure their efforts were warranted. While the film looks amazing and is full of ocular delights, the dramatic ones are sadly way too few and much too far between. Worst of all, the climax does not work, everything reeking of re-writes and re-thinks that don’t do justice to the time and effort I spent trying to decipher and ponder the plot’s first three-quarters.

Maybe I’m taking all this too seriously.

Maybe I should cut Gilliam some slack and give him props for just being able to make sure this thing even got finished. Maybe I should do a lot of things, but even so I still can’t stop the feeling that I’ve seen way too much of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus in the director’s other works too many times before. As impressive as much of it is, and as wonderful as it is to have Ledger back up on the silver screen where he belongs, the beenthere-done-that quotient is far too high, visual wizardry only taking you so far when the dramatic tank sadly runs on empty.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Now Playing After Heath Ledger’s tragic and untimely death, it was widely assumed director Terry Gilliam’s fantastical effort The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus would never get finished.

Thanks to a quick bit of re-writing on his and Charles McKeown’s (Ripley’s Game) parts, as well as the unpaid assistance of actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, this wasn’t the case, everyone coming together to make sure the Oscar-winning The Dark Knight actor’s final performance would indeed see the light of day.

While I am glad this happened, and while everyone involved (including the superstar trio) does superlative work, sadly I’m not altogether sure this whimsical modern day morality play was worthy of all of their collective efforts. As eye-popping and as visually imaginative as it is, as a whole this minor curiosity plays more like a series of Gilliam’s greatest hits, elements of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Time Bandits, 12 Monkeys, Brazil, The Fisher King and even The Brothers Grimm referenced within.

The story is a total mishmash of concepts and ideas that frustratingly never come together. At its heart, the movie concerns itself with Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer), a strange old codger with a penchant for making bad bets with a mysterious man named Mr. Nick (Tom Waits). His latest involves his 16-year-old daughter Valentina (Lily Cole), and if this immortal conjurer can’t capture six souls for the powers of good before his opponent does the same for the opposite side he’ll end up losing her forever.

How does he do this? Apparently Dr. Parnassus has the power to enter a person’s psyche and guide them on a journey testing their moral fiber, a magic mirror granting both them and him access into a weirdly surreal world that would make Willy Wonka proud. It really is a place of pure imagination, and while everyone has to make their own choices as to which path they’ll choose

it’s not like they can’t be politely nudged in one direction or the other.

Ledger plays Tony, a frazzled young man who Valentina and the rest of her father’s crew of vaudevillians save from hanging.

Why is he here and what part does he play?

The answer to that is better left alone, not so much because to reveal it would be a massive spoiler but more because I have this feeling every individual viewer is going to interpret his importance in a different way.

For my part, while I liked the character and found him amusedly eccentric that doesn’t mean I thought he was particularly necessary, Gilliam and McKeown not exactly going out of their way to give the guy three dimensions.

But then, that’s my problem with the whole movie. Everything here looks, sounds and acts far more important than it actually is. I get that this is a fantasy fable but Gilliam seems more interested in making things visually arresting than he does in having them make any sort of sense, things happening because they can not because they drive the plot forward in any emotionally fulfilling sort of way. It’s all razzle without the dazzle, and no matter how great it looks I still spent the majority of the film wishing for more.

Not that I am going to dismiss the film completely out of hand. Anastasia Masaro’s production design is beyond remarkable, while Nicola Pecorini’s (Tideland) cinematography is suitably dreamlike. The acting is universally excellent – Verne Troyer a surprising stand-

Things begin to change when he meets young single mother and small town reporter Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal), the two striking up an immediate friendship that quickly escalates into intimacy. On top of that, Bad’s agent has somehow managed to line his client up with a gig opening for superstar Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell), the exposure hopefully helping to revitalize his moribund career.

I’m not going to spend too much time on writer and director Scott Cooper’s Crazy Heart. Not because I didn’t like it, just the opposite, but more because saying too much about this quiet and emotional drama would ruin a little of its power. This movie doesn’t do anything too far out of the ordinary yet somehow still manages to pack an emotional wallop, the strength of its performances speaking so loudly they allow the film to achieve a beauteous elegance.

Still, even though the film is based on a book by Thomas Cobb, its similarity to last year’s The Wrestler is actually kind of eerie.

Both are tales of redemption about broken men partially redeemed by relationships with good women, each guy ultimately making a poor decision putting this newfound ecstasy in jeopardy. Both concern themselves with the idea of chasing past glories and both have subplots

concerning children unsure if they want to connect with a parent they’ve never known, the thought of making a connection nearly as terrifying as the thought of never having one at all.

Yet Cooper’s effort is a strong one. Not since Tender Mercies (which just so happened to star Robert Duvall, the actor’s presence here making comparisons inevitable) has a movie gotten right to the very soul of country music so effortlessly, the director achieving a delicate balance between sentiment and appreciation that’s solidly genuine. There is a deep, melancholic authenticity that hits home, everything coalescing with the sincerity of an exquisite lyric sung with aged authority.

Bridges is wonderful. He isn’t playing Bad Blake so much as he is the man incarnate.

One of my all-time favorite actors, Bridges disappears inside the character so completely the film almost plays like a documentary.

Along with Colin Firth’s superb work in A Single Man this is debatably 2009’s finest piece of acting and I can only imagine what I would have thought about the picture had Cooper gone in a different direction and cast someone else in the part.

I think I’m going to leave things at that.

Less is more where it comes to Crazy Heart, and as that works blissfully for the director I think it will work just as well in the case of a review. While there are pieces I would have liked to have been handled a little differently (including a scene near the end that doesn’t gel at all), overall this is a movie to be savored and enjoyed as the simple musicdriven melodrama for which it is. Sure the song it sings is familiar, but just because that’s so doesn’t make it any less great, and if I had my way this is just the type of effort I’d love to fill my iPod playlist with.

Go Fish gals reunite for The Owls Every Lesbian (and Lesbian-loving Gay guy) remembers the scruffy 1990s indie hit Go Fish , the film that launched actor Guinevere Turner and L Word collaborator Rose Troche onto the scene. It was a blast of fresh, hip Lesbian energy into the world of queer-themed media and paved the way for a cooler brand of girl-on-girl entertainment. And now two of its stars, Turner and her crunchier companion V.S. Brodie, are set to appear in the new film from Lesbian director Cheryl Dunye called The Owls .

It’s a thriller about older Lesbians accidentally (?) killing a younger one, then trying to hide the body of evidence and running into the usual movie complications that arise when that sort of thing takes place. Sounds like the perfect way to rehab Dunye’s directing career after that unfortunate My Baby’s Daddy situation. It should be swooping into theaters sometime in 2010.

Bryan Singer in for hot X-Men prequel Of all the movers and shakers in Hollywood, no one likes to keep more projects in development than Bryan Singer. Barely a month goes by without his name getting attached to something new. So here’s the next

one: a return to the X-Men universe for the man who directed the first (and best) installment. Singer is currently in talks to take on X-Men: First Class for Fox. The “first class” thing isn’t about how fancy they are; it’s an origin story about the first class of X-ers to make it through the “Xavier Institute for Higher Learning,” aka mutant high school.

New characters are being planned to mingle with the older (but younger) characters and the prequel will also explore the first meeting of Charles Xavier and Magneto. When’s it scheduled to graduate from idea to green light and then production schedule? Not even Magneto knows.

Hugh Jackman gets Gay again In the most recent flurry of Hugh Jackman, Inc. activity (not counting his fictional appearance on Inside the Actor’s Studio for 30 Rock , the moment that inspired the now-legendary line, “I’m not Gay, I’m BILARIOUS!”) something monumentally odd almost slipped through the cracks. by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Youth in Revolt Opening January 8 Michael Cera is a terrific comedic actor with superb timing. He wields the pregnant pause like a samurai slices warm butter.

And just when you think his career has been compromised beyond repair due to typecasting as the awkward teenage nice guy he goes and channels Jean-Paul Belmondo in the better than average teen romp Youth in Revolt.

Nick (Cera) is sixteen, a budding intellectual, and the product of California suburban malaise. On a trip to Northern California, Nick falls for Sheeni (Portia Doubleday), the pretty blonde offspring of the worst kind of born again Christians (i.e. ones that live in double-decker trailer homes).

The teenagers find they have a lot in common. Namely, a love of literature, Frank Sinatra, and everything French, especially French movies. They also share a healthy disdain for their parents.

As Nick heads home to suburbia, he realizes the only way for the lovers to be together is to get his dad a job in Ukiah and get kicked out of his mom’s house. But Nick is too nice, too morally centered, to do the nasty kind of stuff a kid must do to get kicked out. Thus Nick’s alter-ego Francois Dillinger, a suave car thief with an evil streak and no capacity for remorse, is born.

Okay, Cera doesn’t capture the extreme sexual energy that Belmondo oozed onto the screen in 1960. I mean, how could he?

Belmondo’s fast talking car thief is the sexiest male character ever to grace the cinema (and I stand by that superlative).

Still, Cera takes a fun turn as Francois, alter ego to nice guy teen, Nick Twisp, and he takes a baby step toward playing a different character than we saw in Arrested Development, Superbad, Juno, and Nick and Norah‘s Infinite Playlist. He’s also pretty cute in skinny white Euro-trash pants and sockless white loafers.

Portia Doubleday may have the best actor name I’ve heard in a while, but she gets eclipsed by Cera and the ensemble of veterans including Jean Smart, Mary Kay Place, Justin Long, Ray Liotta, Fred Willard, and the ever irascible Steve Buscemi. Doubleday is fine; she just has little to do other than be a pretty prick-tease who dreams in French and can’t make up her mind between two vastly different boys.

High praise goes to the bevy of veterans in flat thankless roles. They make the most of what they’re offered. Willard had me rolling as the aged pinko commie activist who aids and abets illegal immigrants. His tripping on mushrooms scene should go down in history. Buscemi is always fun to watch in everything he does. We haven’t seen enough of him lately and I’d prefer to see him in better material, but he takes what could have been a cliché and turns it into something more.

The actor showed off some skill on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live , backflipping and chopping fake would-be threats to his girlfriend Taylor Swift. And that’s all you need to inspire a film in Hollywood, really: youth, a willingness to get semi-nude and the threat of righteous violence. Congratulations, Mr. Lautner, keep striking while it’s still hot.

Jackie Ryan December 13 Jazzvox.com House Concert Series Bay Area jazz vocalist, Jackie Ryan is one of the finer vocalists on the scene today. She has a dusky, rich, mature mezzo voice and her singing is filled with expression and nuance. She is a brilliant, emotional interpreter and fluidly moves, charmingly, from playful swing to smoky, sensual ballads with ease and confidence.

It is one of her ballads, “Bésame Mucho,” that first drew my attention and interest in hearing her live. I am particularly fond of her singing in Spanish. Ryan has a natural and powerful affinity for musical expression in the Spanish language and it suits her deeply feeling emotional temperament and voice. I think her interpretation of this classic ballad is one of the best I’ve heard.

Ryan performed two sets of songs, accompanied by Seattle jazz pianist, Randy Halberstadt. Halberstadt, a jazz professor at Cornish College, is known among vocalists for his solid playing and sensitivity as a vocal jazz accompanist. The two performed together on the Jazzvox.com vocal jazz house concert series at a lovely home on Camano Island.

Ryan is known for adding lyrics to instrumental numbers and her vocalize performance (creating lyrics to go with what were originally instrumental solos). One such piece she performed was the title cut from her new double CD “Doozy,” a swinging number. She penned the lyrics to Benny Carter’s sax solo from the instrumental piece, “Doozy,” which Carter wrote for big band. An interesting bit of trivia: the word

“doozy” comes from the word “duesy” from Duesenberg, a giant automobile from the early 20th century, which was larger than a Rolls Royce. Ryan shared interesting information about the history of some of the tunes she sang, which was fascinating and really gave the audience a bit of an education on what we were listening to.

The duo, who had an easy and relaxed interplay, performed a nice variety of tunes in different moods including the upbeat Brazilian number, “No More Blues,” by Jobim, the swinging 1957 Roy Fisher tune, “Destination Moon,” the sassy, slightly bawdy, playful 1929 number, “Do Something” (made most famous in recent history by the late icon of jazz, vocalist Betty Carter), a beautiful interpretation of the lovely Johnny Mandel ballad, “A Time for Love,” and the bluesy “My How the Time Goes By,” with an especially noteworthy solo on piano by Halberstadt.

The 5th Avenue presented a “spotlight night” on January 5 where Sher talked about how that production opportunity came about and what made it attractive to him to revive. In an amusing moment, Sher dissed the movie version of South Pacific some know and love. He described how powerfully the script spoke to him, and focused on how overcoming racism and xenophobia equated to building a stronger America. His revival is said to be somewhat darker than a feel-good movie about soldiers chasing girls. Sher also described the challenges in casting and his appreciation for some of the main actors who are touring to Seattle. He was specifically adamant that the signature part of Emile De Becque be played be a professional opera singer, due to the particular needs of the singing role.

The 5th Avenue’s producing artistic director, David Armstrong, also presented a taste of the next musical to come to town, Legally Blonde: The Musical. To introduce that musical, Armstrong brought Tony-award winning producer Hal Luftig to the stage to describe how this musical came into being.

Luftig told about seeing the movie and feeling like there was a real musical story to be told. He realized, with the help of a friend who was a child psychiatrist, that there was a real sociological phenomenon where girls “dumb themselves down,” when girls think boys don’t want them to be too smart. He thought there was a real value to that underlying story, beside the “pink” and the fluff.

(Larry) O’Keefe and his wife, Nell Benjamin, Larry O’Keefe appeared, to talk about how the songs and ideas came together and to sing his songs with the help of Annaleigh Ashford, who has performed in both Legally Blonde and Wicked on Broadway. Ashford showed great charm and talent as she performed a couple of the songs from Legally Blonde. O’Keefe spoke with great love and pride about his wife, Nell, and how they brainstormed a way to appreciate the lives of the young women who felt that their highest achievement would be snagging a smart guy by being the prettiest girl. O’Keefe spoke eloquently about “advocating for something” in the musical and that every character who was proud of his or her best asset ended up finding that the asset also could be a liability and the character maybe had to change.

In addition to introducing these upcoming productions, Armstrong gave an overview of Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s show business writing careers, which allowed for some more musical performances of their music. Eric Ankrim (finishing a starring turn as Peter Pan at the Seattle Children’s Theater) sang the famous song, “Oh! What a Beautiful Morning,” from Oklahoma. Jessica Skerritt hammed it up as Ado Annie, singing, “I Cain’t Say No,” also from Oklahoma. Patti Cohenour showed her tremendous musical range and power by singing a few R&H songs, including “People Will Say We’re in Love” and “If I Loved You.” For those attending, it definitely whetted the appetite for both upcoming shows, and since the spotlights are free, gave anyone who wanted a seat a chance to see and hear top Seattle and Broadway-level talent at work.

Based in Seattle, at least I hope they still are, Soundgarden is responsible for such hard-rocking favorites like “Black Hole Sun,” “Outshined,” and the Grammywinning classic “Spoonman.” Thank you Soundgarden for kicking off my New Year with an unforgettable bang!

Get ready to park your stuff in front of a TV screen on January 31 because the Grammy Awards are piling one mega act onto another for the national telecast. Lady GaGa, Beyonce, Pink, Taylor Swift, Maxwell, Green Day, Dave Matthews Band, and those annoying dance hacks The Black Eyed Peas have all been announced as performers for “music’s biggest night.” GaGa, whose real name is very Italian and therefore difficult for me to pronounce (or spell), will likely perform her nominated hit “Poker Face,” up for Record and Song of the Year, and Best Dance Recording. Don’t be surprised if she weaves the chorus, or a verse, of “Bad Romance” into her mini-appearance, sure to be a highlight of the main ceremony. I predict Beyonce will mesh “Halo” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” into one number, as Taylor Swift will likely do with “White Horse” and “You Belong With Me.” Expect more acts to be added to the Grammy Awards lineup in the coming weeks, such as rock hotties Kings of Leon.

Silversun Pickups have two things to be super excited about in 2010: an upcoming tour with Muse and reserved seats at the Staples Center for the already-mentioned Grammy Awards. The Southern California four-piece, who interviewed with me way back in July 2007, are one of five nominees in the prestigious Best New Artist category – they join MGMT, Keri Hilson, The Ting Tings and the Zac Brown Band. Cross your toes, they could win it all as they’re from Southern California, where many of the industry heavyweights and voting members of the Recording Academy reside. While I can’t confirm anything just yet, it’s quite possible Silversun Pickups will drop by The

Music Lounge for an interview before heading to the Grammys – I’m dying to know what frontman Brian Aubert is going to wear (please, no old sweaters!).

On the subject of Grammys, final ballots have already been sent in by voting members of The Recording Academy and will be counted in the days leading up to the awards. American Idol judge Randy Jackson had trouble completing his ballot, so he enlisted the help of his Twitter followers on choosing a favorite in the Album and Record of the Year categories – supposedly, he was undecided between “Use Somebody” and “Poker Face” for the latter award. Look for a preview of the Grammys here in The Music Lounge on January 30 with my picks in several categories.

Looking for an awesome show to go to, perhaps in a few months? Madeleine Peyroux is a sure bet. The Georgia-born popjazz artist, with Billie Holiday-style chops, is coming back to Seattle for a four-night residency at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley on April 15-18. Peyroux is promoting last year’s Bare Bones album, which I haven’t listened to yet – though, I must say her 2004 effort Careless Love is fabulous; if you close your eyes, you’ll swear it’s a lost recording of the late great Ms. Holiday, particularly the track “Don’t Wait Too Long.” Reserved seats, priced at $35, are available now at www.jazzalley.com.

Eddie Vedder in a suit? Yes, it’s been done. The scruffy Pearl Jam vocalist left his vintage flannels in Seattle last week when he dashed to the nation’s capitol to participate on the Kennedy Center Honors telecast. The properly-attired Vedder sang “City of Ruins,” backed by a full choir, in a tribute to 2009 honoree Bruce Springsteen. Though his hair was long and a necktie was nowhere to be found, not to mention his suit was a little baggy below the waist, I was just happy to see the grunge icon in grown-up clothes.

Finally, new music for the month of January includes Vampire Weekend’s sophmore album Contra, pop sensation Ke$ha’s debut Animal (is she the next Lady GaGa?), Spoon’s latest called Transference, and Unbroken by American Idol runner-up Katherine McPhee.

What to See and Do in Vancouver In Vancouver, one of the world’s most stunning cities, you can kayak in English Bay in the morning before skiing down Grouse Mountain later that afternoon - indeed, few cities offer better access to the great outdoors. The city’s glimmering, postmodern city center anchors a peninsula jutting into the rippling Strait of Georgia, its shoreline sculpted by bays and inlets.

From just about anywhere on this peninsula, you’re within walking distance of two beaches, leafy Stanley Park, the ultra-Gay Davie Village district, and several similarly diverting neighborhoods. It’s for all these reasons that winter visitors to Vancouver will find plenty to keep them busy.

Vancouver is a highly progressive place - feminists, Lesbians and Gays play a prominent role in local politics, have helped rejuvenate flagging neighborhoods, and support a compact but potent restaurant and club scene. The West End, which abuts downtown, is the city’s main Gay commercial and residential sector. You’ll find most of the Gay nightlife and social scene along a roughly eight-block stretch of Davie Street known as Davie Village. Farther north, Davie intersects with another lively strip of cool shops and restaurants, Denman Street.

At this intersection, you’re just steps from sparkling English Bay Beach, a fine spot to catch a few rays on a warm afternoon.

Davie Village is a terrific neighborhood for eating and barhopping. Bin 941 exemplifies the growing popularity of tapas restaurants in Vancouver. Try the mussels steamed with habanero chilies, kafir-lime leaf, and cypress-honey lager, and enjoy a local vintage from the fabulous wine list. The campy and affordable Hamburger Mary’s is a fun, late-night bet for burgers, fries and diner fare. Near where Davie meets Denman, you can sample inventive Pacific Northwestern cuisine at the Raincity Grill where dishes like grilled bison strip loin with lentiland-braised-rib ragout await you. Grab an espresso nearby at Gay-popular Delany’s or up the street at Melriches, which is just around the corner from the acclaimed Queer book and gift shop, Little Sisters.

Later in the evening, check out Davie Street’s Gay bars, the most popular being Celebrities and the Odyssey, which both draw young, stylish crowds. Both spots pull their share of Lesbians, but Celebrities is the more diverse of the two. The Odyssey has a festive patio and a great little dance floor. Other fun drinking spots along Davie include Oasis (an attractively decorated piano cabaret and restaurant), Pumpjack (a neighborhood pub with a leather-and-Levi’s vibe), 1181 (an ultra-chichi martini lounge drawing a well-coiffed crowd), Fountainhead Pub (a casual bar with a great patio), Score (the neighborhood Gay sports bar), and Numbers (a lovably dive-y cruise bar with three levels).

Just steps from the West End you’ll discover the beautiful, rugged Stanley Park, which occupies a peninsula of more than 1,000 unspoiled acres of lush greenery, forests of cedar and Douglas fir, sandy beaches, and panoramic maritime vistas. From here

it’s a short drive to North Vancouver, home to the Grouse Mountain ski area. For a great photo-op, stop by the nearby 450-foot-long Capilano Suspension Bridge, which swings gently (for the most part) 230 feet above the river below it.

Back in the city center, you’ll find some of the city’s best upscale shopping along Robson Street, and you can enjoy a more historic aspect of Vancouver by wandering through Gastown, the site of Canada’s transcontinental railroad terminus. Today you can stroll along Gastown’s main cobbled thoroughfare, Water Street, past dozens of somewhat touristy shops and restaurants.

A culinary highlight in Gastown, Salt Tasting Room lets guests create their own charcuterie-and-cheese platters, with an emphasis on regional artisan purveyors (as well as fine BC wines).

Not far from Gastown, also check out romantic Chambar, which specializes in creative Belgian fare.

Walk several blocks south, not far from BC Place Stadium (a major venue in the Olympics), and you’ll find Yaletown, where Vancouver’s fine-arts-and-fashion elite have converted dozens of early 20th-century warehouses into chic restaurants, galleries, and shops (including the stellar gourmet food market, Urban Fare, an excellent place to pick up picnic supplies). Yaletown is also where you can catch a water taxi to Granville Island, a former shipping and processing center for the city’s logging industry that’s been converted to a mammoth public market and many galleries and artists’ studios.

Yaletown abounds with sophisticated restaurants and memorable people watching.

There’s Blue Water Cafe, whose specialties include a sampler of four ceviches with salmon, halibut, tuna, and scallops, and a wonderful entree of local sablefish caramelized with soy and sake. A block away, slick Glowbal Grill & Satay Bar turns out delicious food, including tequila lamb satay with lime-mint glaze. This is the flagship of the white-hot Glowbal restaurant group, which includes the acclaimed Yaletown newcomer Society, with its cheeky take on mod comfort food. Don’t miss the very grown-up milkshakes (like one with Nutella, Frangelico, and Baileys), or the rich lobster gnocchi with a parmesan crust.

A downtown Glowbal eatery that’s de rigueur for fans of seafood, the swanky Coast Restaurant is one of Vancouver’s definitive see-and-be-seen hangouts. From incomparable Dungeness crab cakes to smoked salmon flatbread with dill-crème fraiche and capers. Inside the Gay-friendly, discreetly upscale Metropolitan Hotel, you can savor first-rate Pacific Northwest cuisine, including local bay scallops with porcini risotto, and Pemberton Valley beef striploin and short ribs with lump crabmeat and bordelaise sauce. With its grand, old-world setting and beautifully interpreted classic Continental cuisine, Bacchus is a lovely place to share a glass of wine by a roaring fire, or feast on Dover sole or slow-braised veal cheeks.

Gaysha says that for one reason or another, the drag community started to lose momentum and isn’t as visible as it once was.

Gaysha said she has found an ally in Steve Tracy, general manager of the club. The two have been friends for a number of years, and working together they say they hope to “bring visibility back to the drag community and give them a venue to perform at.”

“When I first started we got paid through tips and we did it for the art and the friendships we formed,” Gaysha recalled. “Now, it’s become more business minded. I am fortunate to have seen both sides of the coin.”

“Steve has done a lot of great things,” she said. “Neighbours is one of the best laid out dance clubs in Seattle with one of the best sound systems.”

The best thing about the Neighbours Lip Sync Contest is that it is community based.

The entertainers come from our own backyard and that makes the show that much more enjoyable. Gaysha says she knows how important it is to have a venue for new entertainers, as well as seasoned drag queens in search of an audience. “I would not have had the opportunity to get where I am today without Steve Tracy and Neighbours almost 17 years ago,” she said, “I hope to continue to serve and entertain you as long as you let me.”

With the new cycle of contestants heading into the second week, Neighbours Lip Sync Contest on Wednesday nights is one show you won’t want to miss. “The show serves as a launching pad and stage for drag queens, drag kings, Transgender and celebrity impersonators who want to develop their skills and gain popularity in the bar community,” said Gaysha,” A lot of the entertainers have a high level of creativity and skill that keeps me excited each and every week. I look forward to what the Neighbours Lip Sync class of 2010 has in store for us!”

form. The contest is done in two sets, with a dance break and guest performance in between. The winner is announced at the end of the show and receives $100 cash and is advanced to the finals where they compete for a $250 cash prize. In addition, Gaysha says they have weekly giveaways from the show’s sponsor, AJAXX 63, a local t-shirt company. “To date, since July 15th we’ve awarded over $3,000 in cash prizes,” she said.

The show is heading into its fourth cycle and, according to Gaysha, the judging format has changed. “The new format is 100% audience response. So contestants, bring your friends,” she said, adding, “The finals will still be judged by celebrity judges from the community.” Each cycle lasts approximately seven weeks and there is no cover charge at the door.

“This is my second run hosting the contest,” Gaysha told SGN. “I used to host the show ten years ago.”

According to Gaysha, the contest became so popular it was standing room only. Organizations like the Imperial Court of Seattle and the Leather Community would come to cross promote their events because of the captive audience. Gaysha is hoping to build that fan base again.

“The contest is where I learned how to do drag. It was the ‘American Idol’ of its time,” said Gaysha. “This was before the popularity of social networks on the Internet and we turned in our music on cassette tapes.
