films of 2009 I’ve been hearing a lot lately about how 2009, much like 2008, was a down year at the cinema – while there have been plenty of good movies, there have been but a scant few great ones. While I agree this is more or less true from a major studio standpoint, I cannot help but feel the opposite in regards to foreign and independent releases. On that front, this year has been outstanding – there are so many exemplary titles to choose from that trying to decide which one is best is a virtual impossibility. This is not to say that Hollywood’s mainstream didn’t deliver solid pieces of entertainment.
The Hangover emerged as the most successful R-rated comedy in movie history, providing more than enough laughs to warrant at least the majority of its fuss. Director J.J. Abrams successfully rebooted Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek, and even if I wasn’t completely satisfied, the potential

The 10 p.m. show featured all Gay performers in direct response to homophobia in the mainstream hip-hop music industry. “There is currently a very active anti-Gay movement in hiphop, sparked by the ‘no homo’ campaign launched by big-name performers,” Shannon Carroll, aka Shit Damn Hella, told SGN. “These hip-hop artists post homophobic videos on YouTube.” For those who are unfamiliar with the term, Urbandictionary. com lists “no homo” as a phrase used after one inadvertently says something that sounds Gay. In other words, you add the phrase to statements in hopes of avoiding a Gay double-entendre. An example would be, “His ass is mine. No homo,” or “Hey man, pass the

We had a great year of theater in this town, and now it’s time to sum up some of the very best. Whether your choice was bigger budget (mainstream) or smaller budget (sidestream) – What’s this “fringe” business? We should retire this “fringe” concept regarding small theaters! – you could find sharp, thoughtful, provocative and fun theater productions. This was a terrific year for musical theater. The 5th Avenue had world premieres of Memphis and Catch Me If You Can, which were moving swiftly to Broadway (watch the Tonys for Memphis awards soon). The 5th

take note, some of these recordings didn’t even appear in my yearly top-10 lists, but like a good bottle of wine, an album can mature with age and improve in taste the longer it stays around. Many of these albums may a l -

The Village Theatre presented two fantastic new musicals, both by Peter Kellogg and David Friedman, Stunt Girl and Chasing Nicolette. Stunt Girl Sarah Chalfy and “top clown” Nick DeSantis gave prize performances.
